What a pleasant surprise!!! My husband + dog came here for lunch on Sunday and we were greeted by a very friendly staff. I ordered the ham/cheese/tomato panini and it was DELISH. Perfectly thin ham, melted cheese, and the bread was oh so soft! We enjoyed their tables outside out front, and the staff even brings you your food when its ready. Was really excited when this place moved into the neighborhood. They cleaned up and modernized a very dated space. They had good food that was appropriately priced for the quality - coffee may be a bit overpriced. The owners seemed awesome and I was really rooting for them to succeed - I still am. The reason for the three stars, you ask? WTF is up with the bad attitude of the people working there? I'm in MHC once a week and about 90% of the time, there is no sense of urgency, there are no smiles, there is only this cool, detached, hipster indifference to the customer. I was super excited when I realized a new cafe was going to open on this corner. Went to check out this morning and was sorely disappointed. If you are expecting to get a coffee drink that actually fits your desires, this is not the place for you. Your options: whole milk or nonfat. I'm sorry, that is a HUGE difference in taste. And no offer by the barista to make it blended. I don't consider myself to be a high maintenance person, but come on, offer up some lowfat! Plus it was $3.25 for the smallest latte I've ever gotten. Half the size of a normal small latte. Definitely not worth the price when it wasn't even really what I wanted to begin with. I'm all for supporting local business. But I have no interest in an overpriced, snobby, hipster-esque cafe in the neighborhood. I'll stick to what's already here. read more

Adequate seating, large windows with roller shades if necessary in the afternoon, mellow music and clean bathrooms.... downfall only one wall charger and you have to sit in/on the window bench to use it. Dean and Deluca Meet the Western Addition The Matching Half Cafe brings a touch of class to the Western Addition (or if you prefer to NOPA). The white interior with subway tiles lining the walls has a Dean and Deluca feel that adds much to this up and coming area of the city. The coffee is divine as are the pastries from the Bakers of Paris. The staff is a little short handed, but this appears only to be because business is much better than the owners had anticipated. The cafe has really taken off. With lines forming outside the door on Saturday and Sunday More importantly, the cafe adds another eatery within walking distance of Western Addition/NOPA residents. With the opening of the Matching Half Cafe, this revitalized neighborhood has gained a great cup of coffee and a new sense of community in the bargain. read more

simply put this place has the best coffee in the western Addition/NoPa area. i love the two dollar PBRs as well. the people are friendly and unpretentious. i live near by and wander in at least once or twice a day. the only downside could be all the tables being hogged by the laptops and everyone who thinks all they should have to pay for an office is the price of a 2.5 dollar latte. great sunny (afternoon) outdoor seating as well. one of my favorite spots hands down. read more

Not only are the prices outrageous compared to the quality of the products the provide, but they HANDLE FOOD WITH THEIR UNWASHED BARE HANDS AFTER HANDLING MONEY. Never going back here again. Matching Half always has great coffee (albeit, pricey). However, this cafe is never my first choice because the counter staff is very hit or miss with customer service and less then friendly hipster attitude. One guy in particular working the cash register today (grey hoodie pulled up over his head and a beard) is just plain rude. I nearly walked out this morning when I saw him there (as I have encountered him there many times), but was with some friends and all of us were in a hurry. Anyway, he greets customers with a grunt, no eye contact and a messed up attitude that leaves you feeling that you should be ashamed for wanting him to DO HIS JOB. Questions about coffee or food are answered with a shrug and one can only wonder why he is even working there because it seems like the last place in the world he wants to be. I live close to Matching Half, but when I have time, I walk further away to the coffee shop on Hayes and Central. It is less fancy and their coffee is not as good, but they have the most friendly, wonderful, staff who feel like an extended of the neighborhood. If you want expensive, but good coffee, Matching Half is your place. If you aren't up for a dose of sour attitude, I'd say walk the three extra blocks over to Hayes & Central. PS: The Baristas are always great, but folks working the register and prepping food orders need a do-over . . . read more

High end coffee and lattes set the bar for this modern cafe. There are a few outlets at the group table for those looking to camp out and get some work done. But I really love sitting at one of the outdoor tables nicely shaded from the morning sun that bakes many of the other local cafes. The cherry muffins are also great and bagels come from the House of Bagels one of my favorite local bagel shops. read more

My only complaint (which is why I'm only giving it 4 stars instead of 5) is that there are almost no outlets to plug in your laptop so be warned that your limited to your battery life. Very nice space and decor, and equipped with a Slayer espresso machine, like Sightglass. And, like Sightglass, the Slayer-made espressos can be a bit inconsistent, and occasionally on the acidic side. That said, they've never been less than very good, and the people are very friendly. On my WinXP laptop, I haven't consistently connected to their wi-fi network, but my iPhone does, so I can't hold that against them. :-) read more

Finally, something other than Starbucks within a 2 block radius. Every single cup I've had from them has been perfect. I love the brightness of the cafe and the quality of their beans. I get Sightglass from them every once in awhile for the home brew. On lighter days, we've brought boardgames to the back table. Perfect size for Galaxy Truckers. Pair that up with 2-3 cups of coffee on a rainy day and call it perfect. read more

The Matching Half Cafe is the kind of cafe San Francisco can always use more of. It's local, fresh, well-lit, and clearly cared for. I've had more than a beer or two while saddled up to the bar, chatting with friends, and relaxing in the chill atmosphere. I feel so lucky that I happened to live in the green side area of the city. It's not Central Park, but we have lotsa trees and amazing grass and we have Matching Half Cafe. This cool-feeling corner neighborhood cafe has one of the best Chai Latte that I've ever had. Seriously, I'm not trying to be their spokesperson or anything, but it's delicious. It gives you the chai kick but still gives you enough foam to play the mustache effect with. Matching Half Cafe is becoming one of my favorite place to have my afternoon coffee. Love the coffee, snacks and location but make sure to take into account that (with no line and after you placed your order) it will take 20 minutes (!!) for them to make your lox bagel ($8). Consistently 15-20 minutes. Same with many of the other sandwiches. This is simply too long. Update: Seems like they read their Yelp reviews! :) My lox bagel recently has taken just around 5 minutes. Excellent and well-made coffee - they make a good Flat White. The lox bagels are delicious with good wild salmon and the Large sandwiches are huge. The place has a good chilled atmosphere and nice outdoor seating that faces the sun, up a hill on a reasonably quiet street. read more
