We were actually suppose to be in Hawaii for vacation, but Covid brought us on a road trip to Arizona instead. So it was just fitting to find one of our favorite place in Kauai here in Scottsdale on our trip! With Yelp check-in you get 25% off a coconut shrimp appetizer. We also added an Ono grilled fish plate and an Ono fish taco entree. The Coconut shrimps were crispy and tender! I didn't even need to dip the sauce it came in. The fish tacos were so delicious with the mango salsa, and it was a good portion size. The ono plate the fish was a bit over cook and dry actually, perhaps may want to specify to lightly seared instead on your visit. I am glad the plate comes with some veggies because I was definitely craving some. We took our order to-go since we got used to no dining-in in LA during Covid, however we had a great lunch and can reminisce our time in Hawaii just for a little bit in the car. read more

Looking for a nice casual fresh fish place on a Friday night at this place delivered in all areas. All the various menu items we got, we're freshly prepared, especially the macadamia mahi-mahi over rice which was a very high-quality. One of our first stops, after returning to Scottsdale from SW Florida, has always been Coconuts Cafe and the tradition was repeated today! Had the pleasure of meeting the new owners and were happy that the food is just as incredible as always. Coconuts never disappoints. What great ambience! While this isn't what I would consider "traditional" Hawaiian fare, I was very impressed! I ordered fish tacos, someone else ordered the poke bowl, someone ordered the fried fish and chips, and we had the calamari appetizer. Let's start with the calamari: they don't get the tentacles, they get the meat and it is SO good! The fish tacos? Also SO good! I could have eaten just one and been happy. The mango salsa is a great complement to the taco. And the poke bowl? Holy poke! I wasn't a fan of poke when I lived in Hawaii, but this bowl is beyond! I don't get the hype for this place. I first found Coconuts by accident. Then I saw on Yelp how great this place is. So after a couple months I finally pulled the trigger to try it. And it was a huge let down. The only thing Coconuts had going for it was their customer service, which was great. The first thing I noticed when walking in to order was how hot the inside was. 115 degrees outside and, according to the thermostat inside Coconuts, 87 degrees inside. Other than the temperature the restaurant is nicely decorated. We ordered food and it came out pretty quick which is always nice. We ordered: -fish tacos which were pretty dry and bland -kids grilled chicken -coconut shrimp(the best thing we ordered by far) -the fish and chips which were just okay. Among the mediocre food was a giant hair baked into the fish and chips. Now I understand things happen, but Coconuts fails at acknowledging their mistakes. This place was quite costly, I didn't take pictures, but we got 2 appetizers and a bowl of soup. The appetizers were 9.99 for 6 fried shrimp, and same for coconut shrimp. We did really enjoy the clam chowder (I believe that was the name). I didn't think I would like it, but I highly enjoyed it. What caught my eye to being pricey was their salad, the plain Caesar salad and to add chicken was +$5.00 just to add chicken. The place was kinda neat, surf board tables, and the workers there are always making sure everyone's tables are clean. They come take your trash for you. Things like that. It wasn't bad but I wasn't blown away either. We do recommend others to try it and we would eat here again. And a cute outdoor seating area with fake grass and flowers in baskets. The tables along the walls were made to look like surfboards set upside down. TV screens played surfers catching big waves. The server was friendly and bubbly. I selected a mahi plate with veggies, the coconut shrimp appetizer, ahi poke appetizer and chicken pasta. He chose the Alfredo cream sauce for his pasta. The ahi poke came with house made taro chips. How was the food? Points taken off for the mahi plate as they served it with brown rice and veggies instead of Mac salad and white rice. Mahi was dry. His pasta was average. It came with garlic bread. The coconut shrimp was good. Served with sweet chili sauce. Ahi poke wasn't the best. It was ok. Made me yearn for the poke served at the L&L in Aurora. But the serving was large which was nice. I did like eating the poke with the taro chips they were served with. The contrast in flavors and the chips balanced out the saltiness of the seasoning. So while it wasn't great it was a nice reminder of Hawaii. Parking available but it can get busy. Food was good, hot and tasty. The mixed review comes from the fact that I went there to eat WITH my husband and his food came out first. I watched him eat and even finish his meal before mine even came to the table (after inquiring about it several times). Now, I know that food is better hot, and that's why I told my husband to go ahead and eat. It's better than having his food sit under a warmer while mine is still cooking. 100% obsessed with this place! I have seen it on Yelp for years and since it is so far from home, never made it in. But when we were hungry + about to pass it the other day, I had to jump at the chance! It has cute Hawaiian vibes, super friendly employees, and a quick counter service to order. Let me start off by saying the coconut shrimps were the star of the show. They were crispy, cooked to perfection and flavorful. I would go back just for those. The other dishes were good. Neither really blew my mind like the shrimp, but then again we ordered it as take out. I would definitely go back when they have sit down service again. Everything was FRESH. Nothing was fishy, or gross. I personally like very bold flavors, which can be hard to achieve on delicate fish. Would for sure go back though. This is my tropical getaway (while in Arizona)! My go-to item ALWAYS is the coconut shrimp!!! The food is prepared fresh and this time around I had the coconut shrimp with Fries (just ask for it as it's not on the menu like that). We also indulge with the Fish Tacos. 2 tacos come in an order and they aren't just 2 taco's on a plate, they are 2 tacos or 2 separate plates. The fish is a mix of Mahi & I think Ono, but not 100% sure. It has a mango salsa that is really good, but on my last visit, it seemed like way too much cabbage was on my tacos making it a bit hard really enjoy without having to use a fork & knife. The beer that is offered helps to solidify the experience... just need the sound of the ocean water playing over the speakers!! I'm not sure what all changed from the previous location but the new one just isn't the same. The vibe is off, less alive than it used to be and the super friendly and stable workers are all gone, replaced with what seems to be a rotating staff that meets the minimums but no real delighters. As for the food, it has been a little hit and miss too. No idea what changed but it just isn't quite the same. Last time in the mahi fillet was excellent so hopefully that will continue but some of the previous fillets have been questionable, even sending one back which I don't usually do. read more

Took my mom here for her 85th birthday lunch. She really enjoyed her fish, which was awesome, as I thought it was going to be too crispy for her. She LOVED the seafood chowder. My coconut shrimp were a bit small and plain for the price. My brother, not a seafood connessuer, was severely disappointed by the (clearly) Kraft macaroni and cheese he was served. He said he wouldn't have minded if they would have just put on the menu that it was boxed. There was a good variety of sauces available and thumbs up for serving Pepsi products. The food here is fresh and very consistent. The grilled shrimp appetizer is excellent and I have gotten it multiple times. The calamari is also very good large pieces of calamari. The fish is always cooked perfectly and the different seasoning choices are great to have. I also like the tomato, the coleslaw, the cheese, the brown rice. The drinks are a little pricey for the size of cups but that's okay since it's unlimited. The atmosphere is very nice and there's plenty of seating usually. Wow at the service and the food. If you're craving coconut shrimp and a refreshing atmosphere, go here immediately. I searched for "food near me," and this restaurant advertised fish tacos, which sounded great to me. When I entered the restaurant, I was greeted quickly with a smile from all the employees, and since it was my first time in, a couple of the employees weighed in on their favorite dishes. With their recommendations in mind, I decided to go with the coconut shrimp appetizer, the fish tacos, and the onion rings. I was forewarned by the staff that I would have "plenty to take home," and goodness knows that was true. The coconut shrimp came out within 5 minutes, piping hot and served with a sweet sauce with a slight bite. These were some of the best coconut shrimp of my life. IN ARIZONA. HOW? Probably magic. The magic continued, as when my tacos arrived, I thought they had accidentally given me someone else's order as well- that's how large the tacos are. They were VERY generously covered with veggies and fish. They had a great flavor and the mango salsa on top was a great compliment to the fish. The onion rings were beer battered, and were also hot and fresh and delicious. I made it through most of the meal because it was so tasty that I couldn't stop myself, BUT this amount of food could have been split comfortably between 2 people... Maybe with an extra order of coconut shrimp though... Because you're not going to want to share. Employees came out to check on me and clear the table as I progressed through the meal. I am happy to say I've become a regular since they moved to their new location. The breading on the shrimp and fish is unique and I love their cocktail sauce (something I usually dislike a lot).
