This little store serves one of the best sweet-savory pineapple pastries I've ever tasted! I've stopped by 3 days in a row during my stay in Seattle. I've gotten the beef curry hom bow twice and the chicken hom bow once. They serve you a freshly baked warm pastry every time you order. The pineapple top is flaky and crispy and the inside is filled with a delicious savory center. The only downside is how steep the prices were compared to LA or the Bay Area! A small plate of siu mai costs twice as much as the ones you buy a dim sum restaurant. Definitely worth visiting if you're looking for a yummy quick bite though. read more

Delicious and absolutely worth the hype! The Pork Shumai was so flavorful and filling. The Steamed BBQ Pork buns were also a favorite and tasted very nostalgic. The Curry Beef Hombow was interesting. I liked the flavor of the filling on its own and the texture and sweetness of the pineapple bun on its own, but I am not sure if I enjoyed the two together. We also tried the Coconut Cream Bun. The filling is mostly grated coconut with a tiny bit of custard for flavor and consistency. The bun itself was decent, but I wish there was more filling and a higher ratio of custard. I went to Mee Sum in the late afternoon and was happy to see that their usual line was not very long. I ordered a Vegetable Hom Bow and a red bean sesame bun. It seems like they are known for their pork buns, but I'm pescatarian, so I was happy to see some veggie options. I really loved the red bean sesame bun. It was the perfect consistency with a crispy outside and doughy inside. The vegetable hom bow was not my favorite. The texture and the bread was nice but the flavor of the filling was a little too sweet for me and reminded me of ketchup. I grabbed a BBQ pork hom bao to share with a friend, and while I was enjoying my half, a tiny bird swooped in like a ninja, snatched it right from my hands, and dropped it on the ground. I have been seeing Mee Sum Pastry on my FYP and I knew I had to check it out when we were in Pike's Place Market. Trying to pace myself, I only ordered a the baked bbq pork bun and their large shumai. Ummmm, can I just say how the shumai was so big and the filling was so flavorful, juicy and delicious. It was around $6 for one so I only ordered one since I wanted to pace myself but I kid you not it was probably one of the best bites there. The bbq pork bun was good too, it's super similar to what we have in the Philippines I just wish it had more filling. We were walking around Pike Place Market and saw a couple absolutely devouring a hom bow. Naturally, we had to ask where they got it and that's how we found ourselves in line at Mee Sum Pastry. The line was long, which is always a good sign! When we finally got up front, I was a little bummed to find out their veggie hom bow wasn't ready yet. My boyfriend ordered the pork hom bow, and I went with the sweet red bean cake instead. He really enjoyed the pork, soft, flavorful, and packed with juicy filling. My red bean cake was a hit too, slightly sweet, and perfect for a quick bite while exploring the market. They do accept cards, but it doesn't seem like they have Apple Pay. I had to physically hand my credit card over. Not a big deal, just something to note if you're used to tapping to pay. This place is a must-visit when you're at Pike Place. The line was right outside the stanchions,but it moved pretty fast. There were so many options to choose from. We ordered Pineapple Buns and BBQ Pork Hom Bows. OMGGGG! The BBQ Pork Hom Bow didn't disappoint---- It was soo delicious. Lot of meat and the bread was soft, slightly sweet, and had the perfect ratio. The baked chicken hom bow was surprisingly sweet - sweeter than I had expected. The filling wasn't my favorite flavor, but the bread was so soft and fluffy. My boyfriend LOVED the baked bbq pork hom bow and said it's probably his favorite food item at Pike Place! The prices are higher than expected of an Asian bakery, but I can understand why with it being located within a heavy trafficked tourist destination that probably has inflated rent costs. I've always avoided going to Mee Sum due to the constant long lines. This week, I finally resolved myself to visit, regardless of the wait. Arriving on a Friday early afternoon before the holiday weekend, we were greeted by a line that snaked through the zigzag partitions. It moved very fast, with us getting to the front within 10 minutes - turns out my apprehensions weren't warranted perhaps. We ended up getting two buns: Curry Beef Hom Bow ($6.34) - This bun is one of the largest bao I've ever come across, with the price to match. Quite hefty, and filled with tons of rich curry ground beef. It's very pleasing in taste, being salty, savory, meaty, and a bit spicy. There's enough onion and other aromatics to enhance the flavor. I think the specialty is really in the size of the hom bow and the filling. The bun itself doesn't really stand out that much - it's serviceable, with a delicate and thin cookie layer that flakes off very easily (in fact, half of it flaked off when I reached into the bag to grab the bun) and a dense and chewy bread that stands up well to the filling. The topping is sweet and somewhat alkaline tasting. The sweet and salty combination works out perfectly. (5/5) Pineapple Bread ($5.44) - This bun is exactly the same as above but with the curry beef. Unfortunately, without the filling, the bun just doesn't work very well. It's extremely dense and chewy. Due to the size, while the ratio of topping to bun is the same as a normal sized one, the amount of bun is just way too much. I love pineapple buns and this one isn't good. As a side note: it's totally not worth getting in the first place since the curry beef hom bow is only 90 cents more and is much better. The price tag was obscured during my visit, so I didn't realize it would be so expensive. (2/5) All the pricing at Mee Sum is strange. $6.34, $5.89, $4.08, $8.16, $3.64, etc. Why all the random numbers? In my experience, it's usually because they include tax in the pricing, but in this case, they have a sign prominently displayed that states the prices don't include tax. To be honest, I'm not sure I'd visit again. The U-District location, while having less options, is a bit cheaper and they also have great boba drinks to boot, as well as tables to sit at. This location, being at Pike Place, has limited seating options. read more

I feel like it's hard to find awesome tasting baked cha siu baos - bbq pork buns in Seattle. But here we are paying a premium for quality at Mee Sum Pastry. I also learned that Mee Sum was what confused me when Seattleites kept referring cha siu baos as hom baos. Nowhere else in the world would dare call them hom baos. My other favorite dim sum items here are their siu mais, sesame balls (green tea and red bean) and their chives shrimp dumplings! All are very good at premium prices.
