There's also a small bar with about 5 seats which gives you a close up of all the wine. I ordered the 6 item selection of cheese and charcuterie alongside a couple of glasses Cavaletti - a Cabernet Sauvignon from Santa Barbara. It could get a little hard to hear your date or group of friends since it is an intimate spot and everyone is taking over each other, but the wine, vibe and charcuterie all made up for it. Don't let the menu listing a Tater Tot deceive you into thinking about anything else other than you're on 3rd Street in Beverly Grove. Steven (the Somalia) was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. I ordered the charred octopus with hummus, crispy chickpeas, confit tomatoes and topped with herb salad. IT WAS DELICIOUS. The size wasn't huge, but I'd say it was a perfect appetizer. It was crispy, soft, tender, acidic, sweet, umami, and fresh all in one. I also ordered the crème brûlée, which I have to say might have been the best one I've ever had. The sugar was the perfect thickness to get the most incredible crack and the crème was smooth to perfection. You could tell it was freshly made because it was served warm from the torch. There's a lot to like about the thoughtful ambience of Melanie... nice lighting.. candles on the tables, fresh flowers on the bar and a smallish likeable room. I had a table for one on a Tuesday eve at 8pm. The first glass of red wine I tasted (Haut Montplaisir Cahors at $15) was really undrinkable. But the waiter was quick to correct this with a glass from a fresh bottle of the same wine which was very tasty, although there wasn't a verbal apology. I was left feeling a bit if it was my mistake. It wasn't. Service was 'busy' rather than attentive. No eye contact. On my visit, there wasn't a smile (until the very end) and no apparent interest in whether I needed any help with the menu at the start. But I suspect this was because there were just 2 waiting staff were on for 14+ tables inside and out. They had their hands full! The lovely delicious, fresh warm bread came as - well bread. No olive oil or butter. I asked for some olive oil and it came swiftly... but it would be nice I think to to offer an option as standard. The charred octopus was tasty but not exceptional. 2 glasses of French red, Tater Tots (completely my mistake ordering this one as a Brit - I thought chipotle which was the first descriptive word, were peppers not fried potatoes), octopus, bread and sparkling water came to $71 (ex tip). A bit on the pricey side for the experience. I think if you came as a couple it could well be memorable, but as a solo diner I was a little disappointed. I see though, from their website, they do half price bottles of wine on a Monday. What's not to like about that?! Maybe worth another shot. read more

Wow. What a lovely spot. I was served and aided tonight by Austin, who was engaging, friendly, and knowledgable. The simple aesthetic is welcoming, with a broad array of wines awaiting you at the far end. Sat up at the small bar, with the gentle ambience of low chatter and tea-light, I sampled several items from the menu while enjoying a recommended dry red. The menu's small, but that feels right. The prices are perfectly reasonable. The crème brûlée is out of this world. The mussels very rightly get most of the savory attention. The cheese & charcuterie board is beautiful and well curated. I'm basically the salt-monster from the OG Star Trek and the salty marcona almonds are possibly the best I've ever had. I spied a few faces come in that were recognized by the staff; a good sign. Though I was content to make my visit the bulk of my evening out, it would also be a good pre-or-post-game stop if you're wanting rowdier joints before or after; it's a more contemplative spot that wants conversation or quiet reflection if you're lucky enough to grab a stool (as of this review they open at 5p and I'd recommend getting there as close to that time as you can). read more
