Had the taro hummus appetizer with raw veggies and sweet potato chips along with the beet salad as my lunch, plus sneaked a few fries from my dining companions smash burger plate. The combo definitely filled me up as the hummus plate had more veggies than the salad. Together, great flavors and so filling! Fran C. devoured the chicken pot pie, declaring it was the best he ever ate! Now that's high praise. Since it's a limited menu item, order it when you can! The double patty smash burger was also declared a winner by Cathy I., as she claimed it juicy and oozing with melted cheese under a bun cover. The fries, crispy and seasoned with rosemary salt were munched on with delicious abandon. For dessert, we shared a coconut lime sorbet that was light and refreshing. Merriman's was a good, nicer date night spot right by Waikiki. They were unfortunately out of rolls when we got there (830) but our food was service was very good. I had the French onion soup, it was good. My boyfriend had the wagyu burger and enjoyed it. The homemade vanilla ice cream was exactly what we needed to end the night. read more

We were treated to a lovely meal for my birthday and left full and happy. Definitely recommend making a reservation as this place was hopping on a Tuesday night. We sat indoors, but they have plenty of outdoor seating on their lanai as well. All of the staff we encountered were friendly and welcoming as was the atmosphere of the restaurant - fine dining without the stuffiness. We really enjoyed the food we ordered and everything came out hot and with the use of fresh island ingredients when available. Happy hour is still a delicious deal! And the dining room is such a beautiful, airy space. $12 for the smash cheeseburger on a homemade bun. So yummy! $7 for the tasty truffle parmesan fries $12 for the fish & chips that was ahi on this day. Perfectly cooked. $10 for the schezwan green beans. Pretty tasty, just eat them while they're hot. $45 for the steak fries off the regular menu. Good sized sirloin, cooked perfectly (except the extra charred edge) and very delicious. There was an herbed butter pat on top that didn't melt. $9 for the "just lettuce" salad. Beautiful butter leaf in a refreshing lemon dressing. So simple, so good! $14 for easily one of the best bread pudding on Oahu. It's right up there with Orchids at the Halekulani. Service is always on point. From the host stand to the food runners, everyone is pleasant and gracious. Our server, Merwan, was attentive, friendly and so handsome ;-) Here's where I think they fell short on service. When we put our credit card in the check presenter for payment, a man who never interacted with us took it. I watched as he went to process the card at the host stand. He wasn't wearing a uniform. He never introduced himself. If he is part of management, he should have done a table touch. It feels very off-putting to me when a complete stranger takes the money/credit card. Food was rather rubbish. The fish tasted like some sketchy chicken from a school cafeteria. The waitress had gotten my order wrong. I had asked to have my green beans swapped for fries instead. After receiving my order I had received no fries and I instead received the green beans I explicitly asked not to receive. After informing the waitress of the mistake instead of taking accountability she did the unthinkable and blamed I for the mistake. She tried to gaslight as if I was an idiot. When I had finally received my fries we had been charged for it. During our meal she never came back to refill our drinks. She then proceeded to have the audacity to tip herself 20%. The lack of good service and food completely ruined the great ambiance. Overall our server was a Gen Z woman that was narcissistic and rude and didn't know how to properly communicate with others; she had the Gen Z stare. read more

We decided to make reservations for Restaurant Week, and so glad we did because the food and service were fantastic from start to finish. Booking through OpenTable was super easy, and even though we arrived a little early, the place was already buzzing--packed tables, steady foot traffic, and that lively Restaurant Week energy. Despite the crowd, they seated us right on time. The host was warm and welcoming, and our server, Killian, greeted us the moment we sat down. We told him we were interested in the Restaurant Week prix fixe menu, and he walked us through each dish with great detail--super helpful and made everything sound delicious. We started with drinks: the A Honu World cocktail, which was sweet but not overly sweet with a really nice coconut flavor, and my boyfriend ordered the Obsidian Cabernet, his all-time favorite red wine. First course: the ʻulu corn chowder--creamy, savory, and full of flavor. Second course: we couldn't decide between the jerk chicken sandwich or the miso salmon, so we ordered both and split them. The jerk chicken sandwich had just the right amount of spice, super moist chicken, and came with perfectly cooked fries. The miso salmon was delicious and paired so well with the hand-cut chow fun noodles--such a great combination. Final course: the lilikoi posset, lightly sweet with a bright tang, the perfect finish to a great prix fixe meal. Even with how crowded and high-energy the restaurant was--servers moving quickly, conversations filling the room, and every table taken--the team delivered exceptional food and genuinely great service. We came here to celebrate a birthday and it was a good choice! The restaurant was packed and the floor-to-ceiling glass wall with modern Hawaiian decor made the atmosphere bright and cheery. Luckily, we were able to make reservations during happy hour, so we tried items from that menu. The happy hour menu had a good mix of options, so we ordered mostly from it. The farm-to-table cocktail was really delicious and strong though I don't remember what was in it. We also ordered the crispy pork shank off the regular menu and enjoyed it as it was something different that we typically don't see on menus. Our server was so nice and friendly and genuinely wished happy birthday which made the celebration even better. read more

I've always been fond of Merriman's, but unfortunately our most recent visit was disappointing. Our server was pleasant overall, but at times came across as somewhat dismissive and seemed more focused on following his own routine than paying attention to our table. He checked on us only once during the meal and often seemed unobservant. We knew exactly what we wanted to order when we sat down. He insisted on describing the specials that weren't on the menu, and when I politely declined, he became noticeably more insistent, so I eventually let him continue. Later, he tried to clear my small plate and utensils. I told him I wanted to keep them, he didn't accept  my response and he took them anyway. He did bring back fresh utensils, which I appreciated, but he never replaced the small plate. When our entrées arrived, I didn't have the plate I had intended to use and had to wait quite a while before I could get another one. Toward the end of our meal, our water glasses had been empty for some time because no one had checked on us. At the same time, he was enthusiastically encouraging us to order dessert but didn't notice that our drinks needed refilling. I had to ask for more water. The food was also below the standard I've come to expect from Merriman's. The shrimp and fish and chips were so saturated with oil that they were unpleasant to eat, as though they hadn't been drained after frying. There wasn't even a paper liner or napkin beneath the food--just a pool of oil at the bottom of the dish. In the past, I enjoyed dining at Merriman's, and would suggest them before any other restaraunt, which makes this experience especially disappointing. After this visit, I'm much less inclined to return and will likely explore other restaurants instead. read more

Three members of our primary solutions vendor came to town for their annual visit, and we ended up at Merriman's to wrap up the day. I told them to park at Whole Foods as I like the parking lot there, especially on the 4th and 5th floors. I ordered a Monkey 47 gin & tonic. Two ordered glasses of wine, two ordered soft drinks and one of the vendors asked for a Mai Tai. We ordered two plates of Organic Taro Hummus, Garlic Roasted Wild Shrimp, and Roasted Beet & Hirabara Farms Fennel as our appetizers. The hit was the shrimp dish ... The sauce was outstanding. The hummus was a stand-in for Szechuan Stir-Fry Green Beans with Mac Nuts as the latter was out. Entrees included the Crispy Pork Shank, Lobster "Pot Pie", and the Organic Macadamia Nut Crusted Fresh Catch, which was Opah (Moonfish). The best dish was the crispy pork shank. It was served with a pineapple salsa and Poblano Mashed Potato. The Opah was a hit; it was cooked perfectly. I was somewhat disappointed with my lobster pot pie. The puff pastry was soggy, and I didn't care for the pieces of potato ... I wanted more lobster. Several ordered the Lilikoi Posset, which looked like a soft crème brulée. Two ordered the Waialua Chocolate Purse, a visual and taste treat. One ordered bread pudding and gave a rave review. I satisfied myself with a French Press containing Merriman's Blend, a mix of Big Island and Guatemalan coffee. It was nice, but not outstanding. We enjoyed our time there and our host said he really liked the restaurant. I've been coming to Merriman's since it opened in Kakaako, and I commented that the food has improved with each visit ...Recommended! read more

This is my second visit to Merriman's Honolulu and the waitstaff that served us made me feel twice as special this time :) We were first greeted with a complimentary glass of prosecco as a birthday treat (not sure if it was comp'd by waiter- if so, thank you so much Francis and Malia!). Then, we enjoyed quite frankly, the most delicious appetizer I have had in a while. It was salmon dressed over a dollop of yogurt that was served on a really yummy fish cake. I loved it ! We also enjoyed their Tako "a la escargot" and Country bread that was perfect with our glasses of prosecco. My entree was the Organic Macadamia Nut Fresh Catch which was served with the Local Mushroom Chardonnay Sauce, Pukalani green beans and garlic rice. Oh my, my. Merriman's gets rave reviews and write-ups and with good reason. We were there for lunch on a Tuesday, they weren't too busy. Dylan gave us lots of attention and conversation. This is upscale but still casual. The servers were better dressed than the customers. Really comfortable seating. Every thing was excellent . The best Mai Tai I have had in a while, maybe ever;the lilikoi foam is a festive touch. Despite the month not having an "r" in it, the oysters were fresh and delicious, served with a healthy portion of vionette. They were fantastic. Saimen was pork, mushrooms, bok choy and noodles. Every element of this dish was perfect. I got the chili oil on the side and used it all. The dish seemed to get even better while I was eating, I could eat this everyday. My companion had the ceasar with shrimp and you get to order how many shrimp. I love that! I hate wasting. He had 3, and 4 would have been too much. I will most assuredly return. read more

Merriman's Honolulu now serves brunch on both Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (it used to be Sundays only), and it's officially one of my new go-to spots in Ward Village. Love the beautiful comfortable interior, but they also have outdoor seating as well. We started with the Organic Taro Hummus -- creamy, earthy, and served with fresh Pukalani cucumber, radish, Ho Farms cherry tomatoes, Kalamata olives, and Moloka'i sweet-potato chips. The Tako & Country Bread came next -- octopus cooked "à la escargot" style in a rich cognac-parsley-garlic-butter sauce. Unreal flavor combo. For mains, we ordered the Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict, with salmon cured and smoked in-house, topped with perfectly poached eggs, avocado, crispy potatoes, and a silky béarnaise. Then came the Wagyu Loco Moco -- tender wagyu patty over Koshihikari rice, drenched in Waimānalo mushroom gravy and topped with eggs. Comfort food elevated to fine-dining level. They've also got plenty of other brunch hits like French Toast, Waiahole Taro & Kalua Pork Hash, a Mimosa Flight, and warm Biscuits with Jam -- all served with Merriman's signature local-ingredient touch. And don't skip dessert. The Waialua Chocolate Purse with house-made vanilla ice cream was the perfect finish -- rich, warm, and not too sweet. We had reservations ( 8 people) for 6:30 pm but had to wait for a little while. The atmosphere was nice but very noisy making conversations across the table challenging. The waiters were very friendly and attentive. We had the green beans, truffle fries, octopus escargot and bag of biscuits for starters - all very good. I had the Mai tai cocktail and loved the lilikoi foam! For my entree, I had the mushroom ravioli. There were 3 large raviolis which if I didn't have a bunch of appetizers before, probably wouldn't have been enough. Lastly, I shared the chocolate purse. Which can be both good and bad because you know what you're going to order and you can look forward to your favorites. Or it can also be bad because it's the same "boring "stuff. Some of my favorites? The bag of biscuits. Delicious soft biscuits served with butter and honey. The tako/octopus and bread... served escargot style with butter and herbs. The hummus with fresh made taro chips, the Caesar salad served with whole romaine leaves, the half juicy chicken in a skillet, the juicy burger....Happy Hour here is always fun too! Lots of tummy pleasing choices. Not happy with the special today-bone in ribeye served with an herb butter. Delicious but filled with veins and hard to eat. A better quality of meat would have made this dish special. I get that this is not a steakhouse, but for the prices that are being charged, they can do better. Still one of my favorite restaurants. I had lunch with my co-workers and we really enjoyed this place! The vibes are really nice and love how bright and welcoming it is with all the natural light shining in. We got the kalua pig quesadilla to share and it was tasty. I had an espresso martini and it was sweet and strong just how I like it. For my entree, I got the chicken pot pie lu'au and I was so impressed by this! The puff pastry crust was nice and flaky and I loved how creamy the filling was. It was also savory yet a bit sweet from the coconut lu'au. It was like a local style chicken pot pie! For dessert, we got the Waialua chocolate purse and lilikoi posset. Both were so yummy! The chocolate purse looked cool and the chocolate itself was rich and paired well with the homemade vanilla ice cream. The lilikoi posset was almost like a lilikoi pudding or cream which reminded me of creme brulee. Super creamy, sweet and a bit tart. The service was good and food came out on time. We shared the ravioli and it was great - just a little bit of a kick to it to make it more flavorful. The lobster pot pie was amazing - the sauce inside was savory and there were decent sized chunks of lobster and a lot of scallops and other filling. It was definitely worth it. The setting was pleasant for a group outing of five at 4:30 PM for happy hour as the sun was setting in the background behind all the buildings and structures in front of Merriman's lol. Service-wise they were quite busy for 4:30 PM dinner time on a Saturday evening, but our server was nice and tried his very best to be attentive and our water & drinks were always replenished. BTW, the dinner menu starts at 5 PM. Otherwise, they are still serving the lunch menu before then. Only downside, in my opinion, would have to be the selection of items on the menu & the lobster pot pie was more like a lobster bisque. If you feel like eating a hearty soup, the "lobster pot pie" is your go-to. Just don't expect pot pie consistency when you break open the pot pie pastry on top. I heard the flavor was delicious but the filling was just too runny to be considered pot pie. We also had the hummus dip w/ baked sweet potato chips and kalua pig quesadillas which were 10/10 & I had the salmon with mashed potatoes which was also 10/10. Highly recommend. This is a nice place to come eat excellent service but I found the food very average. The smash burger was average for 12.00 happy hour. I asked for raw onions and it just didn't even add that wow taste with raw onions. The fish tacos was so small they didn't even put more cabbage or any hot salsa or anything to uplift the flavor. Their truffle cheese fries was like their regular fries not with the 7.00 HH. We ordered the truffle fries and it came after we ate our meal. We have gone to the Merriman on the big island and the food was better. I was disappointed at this place for the food. I found it very average for happy hour. read more

This was just my 2nd time visiting Merriman's, but both were so enjoyable. Something about this place just feels so luxe yet approachable. And of course I love that there's a more affordable lunch menu available, even on weekends. We came on a Sunday and there was a very brief wait for a table, but open seating at the bar available. There was live music playing towards the front that added to the atmosphere. I ordered the fish sandwich ($23), which was salmon for the day. The fish was cooked really well, very tender and moist. And served with a nice helping of veg on a unique but tasty bun. We ordered parmesan truffle fries to share with the table and those were really good, albeit a bit overpriced at $12. Overall, a very pleasant and relaxing meal experience. I'll be sure to come back sooner than later! I would rate our service 3.5/5 - not bad, but nothing remarkable. One of my friends had never been to Hawai'i before so I was glad to introduce her to the farm to table experience.
