We came here as a 3 top reservation and the feelings are mixed. The ambiance was gorgeous and the art was fantastic. We ordered 2 bottles of wine, started with a white then went for a red, both were very good. As for the food... that was the downside. We started with the steak tartare which was one of the best we've had but the other dishes, plantains, oxtail pasta and chicken were nothing to write home about. The real killer was the Tomahawk steak that was $165 and we asked for it medium rare, we asked for help cutting the steak and we're notified we would be charged more to cut it, lame. To make our experience worse the steak was not medium rare it was well done which was a huge let down. Our waitress Cathy was very apologetic and actually saved us all from being in a bad mood from this experience. Unfortunately her wonderful attitude and service will not be enough for a return trip. read more

I feel bad writing this review because I was hoping to have a positive experience. On the positive side, the decor is very nice. On the other hand, the service was very slow. Specifically, we arrived Sunday around 1pm and only one other party was there and it took five minutes for us to be greeted and seated, another ten minutes for our order to be taken, our drinks did not come until our meal, waitress never checked on us and to top it off, we had to wait over ten minutes to pay our check. The food was just okay. To end on a positive note, the waitress was pleasant when she did show up but an overall bad experience on my birthday. I went there on a Sunday. I had a reservation for 12 noon got there was quickly seated. Service was good. Ordered the pollo dish which was like a chicken stew and my friend ordered the beef tips dish. The food was good. We did order a side of a monfongo. coming from the East Coast understanding authentic Dominican food I think they failed on that dish. They could've gotten that better. I don't know where that came from but the drinks were good. I had to make my own Irish coffee. would've been nice to see that on the menu. at some point around 1 o'clock a jazz player came. He took some time to set up a little commotion, but ultimately he started playing this music and so the vibe got pretty good. This was the worst food I've ever eaten in SF, my two dining friends agree. Teo of us had the Lamb Gemelli ($32 each). The dish was so shockingly hot--hey if you're going to cook with scotch bonnet you should tell your patrons. We had asked for an explanation of the dish and the waiter fumbled around what possibly would be with it or in it. We (3 at the table) decided it sounded like a ragout and suggested "was that it?" The waiter wasn't sure (his face looked like he had no idea what we were suggesting. One of us couldn't eat it after 2 mouthfuls because they were chocking so much, the other ate half and took his home. The salad looked like some 5th grade kid was preparing it at Summer Camp. Plum tomatoes hacked in a salad oh please! We were rushed through the entire dinner yet never suggested any dessert. As an end we ordered French press coffee expecting it to be espresso. Not only were the beans as ordinary as Maxwell House but the waiter didn't even stay around to pour it. Additionally, two young women at their table asked us how our dinners were and shared how awful their meal had been. We went to support Draymond, we went because a story about the new restaurant had the same Chef as its successful counterpart in Oakland. Really awful. The restaurant is very small but ok. There is a lounge downstairs and it was empty. Why does it say only 90 minutes to eat on Open Table? I think that discourages patrons that want to enjoy their meal and not rush. Also it wasn't ever more than 60% full. The wait staff was very nice but forgot my friend's entre and it took another 40 minutes to have her served. Maintained the gorgeous ambience of the old locale while adding beautiful new touches and African art. The music was lively and fun, the food was delicious, and our servers Tyler and Mizana (not sure spelling but she was beautiful and Ethiopian!!) were the cherry on top with their sweet and knowledgeable and attentive service. You can really tell a lot of love and thought was put into the food - delicious Afro-Latin and Ethiopian flavors all around - with just the right amount of spice! Not going back. Overpriced main dishes that are overly salty and mushy. Steak tasted like a burger patty, marinated for too long. Appetizers weren't great either. Definitely overhyped. Will not go back again. PLUS, they overcharged my credit card!!! Be aware and check your credit card charges!! They like to add extra tip!! I'm still trying to get ahold of someone to reverse the charges! I might go the dispute charge on my credit route if I don't hear from them soon.
