We went to Mexican Sugar for Cinco de Mayo; we made a reservation about a week in advance and given how busy it was, were actually seated about 30 minutes after our reservation time. No problem, as one should assume days like Cinco de Mayo, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, etc., are all very busy. The food I ordered was just okay and a little spicy for my liking but it's my partner's favorite place so this is a "me and my taste" problem, not a restaurant problem. I want to say that James, one of the managers on duty, and our server, Zoe, did a terrific job handling all the busyness. Mexican Sugar had over 700 reservations and it was rather shocking how many people I overheard that were complaining and borderline yelling at James because they didn't have a reservation and were appalled at there being a three hour wait. Respectfully, if you didn't make a reservation at a Mexican restaurant on what is likely their busiest day of the year, that's on you and you should 100% expect that long of a wait. James fielded several of these complaints just while I was within ear shot waiting for my table, I can't imagine how many total he received. And Zoe was attentive, constantly checking on us, very friendly, and never appeared overwhelmed despite the volume of people. She made some wonderful suggestions, and everyone cleaned their plates. We had all ordered something different, I went with the shrimp fajitas, and it was not sizzling. Just came on a plate. Wish they took the tails off! however very flavorful. Salsa and chips were warm and yummy. We added a side of guacamole made perfectly. Made reservations for Mother's Day breakfast/brunch and when we arrived, we were seated in the dark back room of the restaurant with all the other families with young children, while the front of house with tons of natural light was relatively empty and well staffed. We were also right next some kind of doorway for employees (not the kitchen) so there was constant traffic past our table. For being open at 9am, an hour earlier than their typical Sunday hours, for Mother's Day, the breakfast selection was minimal as they stuck with what I assume was their usual menu focusing on lunch and dinner items with a small brunch section. They also had no breakfast items for children and we were instructed to simply order "à la carte" from the main breakfast/brunch menu. We paid $6 for a single slice of French Toast and when a side of fresh fruit was also suggested for our 4 year old, it was not mentioned that it would come with a dusting of tajin. The server knew the fruit was for a child and failed to mention the tajin to us, or ask the kitchen not to add it to the fruit. My orange juice, while fresh, seemed heavily watered down even before the ice in it began to melt. For $17 the chips in my brisket chilaquiles were over cooked and there was only about five bites worth of brisket in the entire bowl. read more

After visiting a different Mexican Sugar location earlier in the week while in Dallas for a book signing, my husband couldn't stop talking about the pork chop, so we decided to take our TX family to the Plano location before headed to the airport! First impression of this restaurant was how amazingly beautiful and perfectly decorated this restaurant is. I was highly impressed and definitely an atmosphere that I look for in a restaurant. There is a long bar with plenty seating and the dining area is pretty large. We started off with chips and salsa and a side of guacamole. I could honestly eat my weight in both of these items. I ordered the steak enchiladas, and it was a very heavy dish with not much flavor to it. wasn't impressed unfortunately. The staff was very nice and attentive. On August 16, I had a reservation for two at 545. We arrived to a barely filled restaurant at 530 and were told we would be seated closer to our reservation time. After sitting at the bar overflow seating for 15 minutes, we were then told our table was ready and offered the same seats we had been seated at. When asked if there were any actual tables in the dining area available, we were told no and that they were "fully committed" for the evening. I'd like to remind you, we had a reservation. We decided to leave due to the overall demeanor and treatment received. This was an unfortunate experience since we love the Mexican Sugar in Dallas and visit frequently. read more

For a main meal, got the roasted chicken enchiladas and the lump crab. The roasted chicken enchiladas came with three different sauces, queso blanco, salsa verde, and salsa Rico. The queso blanco and salsa verde were fantastic but the salsa Rico was mild and lacked flavor. The lump crab was good, a little heavy as the meat was more like a lobster bisque. For drinks ordered the hibiscus and perdona mi espanol. The hibiscus was fabulous, a staple of the restaurant and a must order! The perdona mi espanol was okay, wouldn't recommend. My bear and I had the perfect Tex Mex evening for our first night in Plano. We dined at Mexican Sugar on a Sunday night where it was relatively bustling with good vibes. The waiter brought out warm chips and warm salsa. I ordered shrimp and beef fajita while my bear ordered 3 brisket tacos. My dish absolutely knocked my socks off when I saw the sizzling plate and fragrant meat; I practically drooled waiting for my dish to cool a bit before digging in. We ordered an Out of Office cocktail (the best one, with tajin!), Como La Flor, and La Catarina. I left pretty tipsy from drink 1.5 cocktails, and extremely satisfied to have enjoyed a romantic, tasteful night with my bear. We were enchanted by the beautiful decor and tiles. I ended up back here for an early dinner one Friday. The parking is a separate garage but relatively close. The place has a nice ambiance inside. Their chips come with temp warm salsa which always throws me off but it is fine taste wise. We shared a few orders of the Queso Blanco $10.00, these should have been $2.00 off for happy hour so actually $8.00 but we deemed the hassle of getting this fixed not worth it. The Queso was creamy and had a subtle kick of flavor that I enjoyed. It is a bit thicker than other queso's. I had a few HH Make It Skinny Margaritas $7.00 each that are pretty good, light and refreshing. For my entree I got the Carne Asada Fajitas $26.00. This was good taste wise but the meat was kind of tough, did not tear easily. Not sure if it was cut against the grain or what happened. The hot iron it comes on kept everything super hot. I did not get any flavor from their chimichurri and it is weird that they do not include cheese in their fajita sides. I chose flour tortillas and it came with black beans and cilantro lime rice. I enjoyed the rice more than normal Mexican rice most places give you. Our server Oriana did a pretty good job of being patient with our semi large party that included some kiddos. Amazing food and absolutely crap service. First of all, the server gives us a sangria which was about 3 ounces. We asked him why it was so small and he said, "it was just a big glass". I'm not a moron. Water was left without being filled most of the night and we asked our server for more chips which he never brought. We ended up asking another server for some and it was brought right away. Our server was dismissive, curt and inefficient. Even my kid said he gave us the "side eye". Again, all of the food we had was amazing. Too bad they can't hire better servers. Just destroyed our meal.
