(It's overpriced) Any Turkish restaurant that charges you for tea REFILLS is a scam. Turkish tea is integral to Turkish culture. More often than not, it's offered without cost to show hospitality. However, we are in the states so I don't mind paying (assuming refills are free). BUT On this particular night it was cold and they only had 1 outdoor heater working which was going to be prioritized for a party that had made a reservation before us. Here is where a restaurant/management can make you feel taken care of-- (despite the circumstances of them only having 1 outdoor heater outside): Offer hot tea! And keep it flowing! Instead of charging us 10 dollars for 5 tiny cups of çay. We're cold and your heaters are broken. Not acceptable for a restaurant that charges 36 dollars for 1 skewer of Adana Kabob. The worst part was that 10 minutes into our dinner, a table inside had finished and was held empty while we froze outside without a heating lamp. They easily could have moved us inside. Hospitality is seriously lacking, let alone for a Turkish restaurant. Was very excited to try this place! I was craving Turkish food and had heard overall positive things about Meyhouse. Wish I had done a little Yelp research before making the one hour drive to the restaurant. The complaint of the prices being too high seems to be pretty consistent. Food: Ridiculously overpriced but fresh. The tiny portions make you feel like you're getting ripped off. The eggplant mezze was good, the Manti was mostly dough-- barely any filling. Adana kabob was a rip off and nothing SUPER special about the taste to make the 36 dollar cost justified for ONE skewer. The homemade bread was fresh and complementary, but it's just carbs, no nutritional value. The waiters were very sweet and kind!!! They made us smile and made our experience tolerable. read more

The Mussuka was delicious! The bread they serve while you wait for your food is excellent. We got the sausage pide which was okay, and the lamb kebab dish was delicious, but I'd try other things next time. Very disappointing experience. I consider Turkish food to be one of the best cuisines in the world, and this place just didn't deliver. We ordered their "little little in the middle". The appetizers were very average. We paid $150 only to be served very small portion of kebab meat. It's a daylight robbery. We got seated outside and asked 3 of the staff to turn on our space heater. All 3 of them said they'll come back and just forgot about us. One of the waitresses was very nice and friendly, but the other one was just rushing us to order. I was excited to try this finer-dining restaurant in Downtown Sunnyvale. While they were easy to make reservations for and accommodating when we were late and the food is good, the service experience here was not good. Service - 1 The service here was awful, especially for a finer dining restaurant. - The main hostess who seated us and took our orders never smiled (not once) - The bread was served with one tiny dipping bowl for five people (we had to ask another person to bring more) - She forgot to bring our appetizer order (even after we asked another person) - They brought out our food without rice (we had to ask twice to get it) - Even the check we had to ask for twice - We weren't checked on even once during the entire night Normally for newer places, I'm willing to cut some slack if the food is good. But the bare minimum of service is to smile and be welcoming. It's ok if you make a mistake, but just admit it and fix it. I was left feeling like I walked into someone's house and sat at their table and asked for food. In reality we there willing to pay a good amount for good food and good service. Food - 3.5 The portion sizes weren't large for the price point but the food was quite good. #26 was excellent. They started everyone with some flavorful bread (but only brought one small olive oil dipping bowl for a party of five -- we had to ask for more. Excellent food, excellent service. The enginar (artichoke), the eggplant dip, the kiofte (bite-size mini-burgers), the mastiha ice cream and the pistachio baklava were all outstanding. The grilled lavraki (branzino) was very good, although it would have been even better if it had been grilled whole - opening it in half and then grilling it open removes some of the juiciness of the fish. The only thing that was not so great was finding parking in Sunnyvale on a Sunday evening - it took us more than 20 minutes. read more

This is hands down the best Turkish restaurant in the South Bay. The bread is baked freah daily and the olive oil is top notch. My favorite dish is the manti, which is Turkish dumplings. The lamb is also very good here; it's tender and delicious (and this is coming from someone who doesn't even like lamb that much!). Very mixed experience. The food is okay, but for fine dining aura they exude, you HAVE to have better service than this. No heating outside, and if you are given a table to sit outside on a cold night, the least you can do is wait well on the guests. The waiters seem to be poorly informed about the menu, ie, they recommend everything. Also they come and check on you only once while serving the dish. This place is just fantastic. We easily end up spending $150+ between my husband and I when we go, but it's so worth it for a date night restaurant. I do not have many experiences with Turkish food, but I am happy with what I did have! The Mezzes are probably my favorite. Especially the Atom dish- I could eat that every day! The eggplant one and the Girit mezze are also delicious. I also loved the meat but I couldn't tell you the name of what I had with that. It's all so yummy. Had bookmarked this a while back based on ratings . While they were very quick to take us in without reservations, the experience was sub-par at best . The Turkish cheese bread was very good but the rest of the items were ok . And they forgot my order , while my husband finished his Adana kebab( small portion for the price ) , it took them another fifteen minutes to bring my order after pointing out that I am still waiting for the order . I'm going to say first that the food here is exceptional. It's possibly even the best food in Sunnyvale. And I say that about no other restaurant here in town. We have ordered takeout from Meyhouse many times since the start of the pandemic. So why would I give this restaurant any less than 5 stars? I've now decided to speak up after I saw other reviews and heard from others' experiences. For one thing, we've gotten our order wrong on a number of occasions, like nearly every order had incorrect items. For example, I order two sides of Falafel and get zero, only find out when I get home, and No I do not want to go back to the restaurant! I just want to feed my hungry kid, am I right? I should open the bag up before leaving but it's not a welcoming vibe, so I leave ASAP. That's reason #2. I always thought I got a bad vibe from whom I think is the owner. I didn't think much of it, but I'm hearing from other people who are Asian like me that many Asians get obviously different treatment and service from this restaurant. The ladies at this restaurant always seem anywhere from ok to pleasant, but not the man who is probably the owner. Overall I get this F-you vibe and I really, REALLY did not want to think it was racist. But I think many Asians don't get a welcoming vibe here. Went for lunch during the week. The food here is really good. One of the tastiest salads I've had and the bread is warm and yummy. Lamb and veggies dish for lunch. My friend had dolmas and that tasted good too. There seemed to be only one server there and it was a several minutes wait to get seated. We didn't get checked on much during lunch. I had to go find him to get more water. The decor was lovely and peaceful. I'd order from here again but prolly not return for lunch as the service was suboptimal. Absolutely fantastic! Hands down the best Turkish restaurant in Bay Area. Most of the dishes are on par with the restaurants in Turkey and some are even better, like Pastirma was the best we had ever had in our lifetime. Usually, Turkish cuisine in United States is "generic" which is cooked in a way that appeals to those who got accustomed to Greek or Persian cuisine. They can actually vary greatly in taste and the unique Turkish-style can easily get lost. Hidden Jewel, stumbled with this place while walking downtown Sunnyvale. The food is very authentic Turkish with fantastic execution and attention to details. Our waiter Ali was very gracious, took the time to explain the menu and walk us through our options. Offered us complentary Basterma (thin sliced smoked beef) with delicious bread, and perfumed tea. Had an incredible salad with Sumac and pomegranate molasses and lots of crushed walnuts. Then a prawns dish came with wonderful aroma of herb. I haven't realized how much I miss 'meyhane' concept in Turkey in which you are not there to eat only, the food is just a company to a long conversation. It is served slowly, you are in no rush. It is a little bit on the pricey side but regardless everything we tried (whole meze selection with main courses) was very tasty, as tasty as it could be with the veggies in a different country. They served few bites from the house. I finally feel that I can suggest this restaurant who asks for a Turkish cuisine restaurant in Bay Area with a clear conscience and no hesitation. Very friendly staff, cozy ambiance, nice music. The staff does not bring the check before you ask which I think adds up to the joy of eating there. You are not encouraged to leave unless you want to. The only downside for me was the black tea which had bergamot inside for both ice and hot teas. I forgot to ask whether they have normal black tea or not. It would have been heavenly to polish up the main course with a freshly cooked tea. The rest of my party loved the freshness of the black tea with bergamot served in traditional tea glasses. We've been to Meyhouse twice in as many weeks. The food has been incredible. While we aren't new to Turkish cuisine, this experience was quite exceptional and surprising. The flavors were bold and dynamic. Even the bread was incredible. During our first visit, they let us take some home so we could share with our daughter who couldn't be with us. First time going in to the resturant looking for the original Turkish tavern cuisine that used to exist in the same spot. A few obvious nuisances stuck out at me, the server had difficulty speaking or explaining or understanding the menu in English. So I requested for someone who speaks English to communicate better. The lady manager seemed reasonably helpful however upon serving us a soup with yogurt base that didn't seem to taste or look anything like what it was described in the menu and was sent back immediately without consumption decided to charge us for the soup. Now here comes the interesting part, I pointed out that we were charged for the soup even though we didn't have it. So it needs to be removed from the bill. She responded and I quote : " we served it to you". Anyway, the rest of the food including tavuk and beef steak in yogurt sauce was probably 3 stars because it was moist but not much flavor for usually turkish food. No one wanted to check up on us asking if we needed anything like bread, hot sauce etc. I definately hope they learn to improve their service and perhaps be vigilant about the customers. Our family came on a Sunday evening. We had made a reservation so were promptly seated. The restaurant was located on a fun street with lots of other restaurants and bars. The weather was warm so lots of people were sitting outdoor or walking about giving the neighborhood a nice feel. Service was a little spotty. We were given warm bread and water soon after being seated. However, it took over 10 minutes to get menus. Once ordered, the food took FOREVER to get there. Our water glasses were filled regularly though. The food was interesting but a little over priced with portion size being rather small. This place makes me happy that I live in sunnyvale. I am Turkish and I can say this is the first authentic Turkish restaurant I have tried in the US. They have food from different regions in Turkey (such as sea asparagus from West and Manti from East). Great options both for vegeterian s and meat lovers. They also give complementary Turkish tea like the restaurants in Turkey. If you like eggplant I strongly recommend trying Kopoglu. read more

Has a very positive vibe and great place to wine down ;) Taste: The food tasted good, we got the lamb kebab and chicken kebabs. They were both cooked perfectly, juicy not dry, not undercooked. The flavor was a bit bland, for my taste. It was nothing special. We also got some wine and some appetizers. Wine selection is not great. The wine pours were generous. The appetizers were good, and the fresh baked bread was fantastic! Cost for what you get: The lamb at $32 and the chicken at $28 means each small 1"X1" piece of lamb is ~$5, now this isn't lamb chops or lamb shank or lamb rib. Unfortunately the taste and service also did not justify this price point. This is where Mayhouse completely misses the mark. Two entrees, one appetizer and one glass of wine for more than $100 is a gross misjudgment of the services and quality of their food vs it's perception. Would I go there again? We recently traveled to Athens via Istanbul and wanted to refresh memories of the Turkish food we tasted at the Istanbul airport. Meyhouse certainly delivered. We had dinner here twice, and both times the food was absolutely wonderful! They have a very interesting menu of Turkish mezes (I would call middle eastern version of tapas) and main dishes. The first time we visited with friends and ordered all the mezes to share and they were all very delicious especially when paired with their freshly baked bread that comes out of their wood oven, we all loved the bread. The eggplant mezes have a nice smokey taste coming from roasted eggplants in their wood oven. For drinks, we tried their raki which is the Turkish national drink and loved how they served it! The second time, we ordered the Branzini and the lamb. Branzini comes out of the wood oven still sizzling in a bed of tomato and peppers, sooo good! The lamb is covered with a rich sour cherry sauce and the eggplant puree smokey taste complements it. One more thing... the kunefe for dessert is heavenly, it is a crunchy thin noodles outside and soft cheese inside soaked in sweet syrup with pistachios on top! This dessert must be eaten hot, right after it is cooked and they make it from scratch and bring it to you hot out of their wood oven! Can't wait to go back and try their kabobs. The markings of the restaurant's name are shrunk down to small signs and mat at the front entrance, lost only to the original "Taverna Bistro" or "Taverna Bar Hookah Cigars." The mostly Turkish staff dressed in black greet you with smiles. Sit outside to people watch, underneath the plane tree-lined street. Or opt for inside seating, next to walls adorned in black and white Ara Güler photos of old Istanbul. In the background plays traditional folk music. If you aren't an expert in Turkish fare, like me, the staff will make recommendations. The food, amazing. What's in it? I have no idea. So the staff explains. I still don't have any idea. They say just eat it. I oblige. . . wow. They're many choices, mostly small to medium-sized portions, more chances to experiment. You want vegan? Plenty of options. Feeling adventurous? Try the drink salgam (pronounced shal-gum), a non-alcoholic mixture of violet carrots, turnips, and other stuff. It's quite sour, but will surely clean your palate, ready for the next dish. Want something alcoholic? Definitely try raki (pronounced "ruh-kuh"), which has a licorice taste like ouzo. When's a good time to go? Well, between now and October. Apparently after that this place will be no more. It will close down, to be born anew in historic downtown Palo Alto. There it will be almost 3 times the size. From dinner only, it will add lunch. I love this place! All the dishes are authentic, and very well made. The owner takes additional steps to ensure he brings the highest quality ingredients and very authentic recipes to the table. You can find many special foods that you cannot find in any other Turkish restaurant. I think I ate one of the best Adana Kebabs I had in here, including many I ate in Turkey. Their kebabs, pies, pastirma, and desserts are amazing regional! They also hold special theme nights with fixed pricing and menus. Staff is super friendly, as well as the owner.
