Years and years (and years!) ago I bought the Miette cookbook based entirely on the cover featuring a chocolate layer cake swirled with pink frosting and topped by a single rose (not to mention the adorable scalloped paper edges!). I did not know anything about the actual patisserie until after consuming the cookbook, and at the time I lived in Virginia, so tucked it away as a someday sort of wish, but never much considered the possibility of visiting. Imagine my delight on coming across a mini iteration of the bakery when shopping the Ferry Building! Sure, it wasn't the original, and they must just have their products delivered there, but I could finally try the goods! They have just two small bakery cases, one filled with single serving sized treats like cupcakes, tarts, cream puffs, eclairs, and baby loaves of bread. Macarons in apothecary jars line the top, and the other case features full size cakes. There are a few displays with cellophane wrapped cookies, but otherwise it's a lot of candy, which I did not expect. I was less excited about this as the majority is clearly not created by them (of note, there was Turkish Delight that I think they do make). I am a fiend for candy, but felt like I can get that anywhere, and needed to take advantage of the special items I can only find at Miette. I selected a sweet chocolate cupcake capped by strawberry frosting (and a darling daisy!) along with chocolate shortbread cookies. The girls at checkout rushed us through, and when I asked for a bag acted put out. In fact, they never found one and I just left without. Admittedly, they were busy, but that does not give one permission to treat customers poorly. They packaged the cupcake in a small Chinese food style take out container, which I thought was cute about ten years ago, but feels a little overdone and dated now, and also isn't Miette big enough that they could design their own branded box? It doesn't really matter, but for gift giving a more attractive presentation would be nice. The cupcake was wonderful, though! A little smaller than standard size, with a moist, fairly large crumb cake and deep chocolate flavor. The frosting was light, almost airy, and definitely made with fresh strawberries, which I adored. I ate most of it, but did share a bit with my husband. He's big on moist cake so I thought he'd be all about that, but surprisingly, he commented that the frosting was the best part. Huh! Worth noting, as he's not a fruit fan in particular, especially with desserts. I would return, but would choose the actual Patisserie over this version, especially in light of the not-so-great customer service. read more

Do yourself a favor and head over to the Ferry Building and find Miette Patisserie amongst the collection of wonderful shops that occupy the historic building right on the Embarcadero. Who doesn't love a sweet treat or two every once in a while? Oooor if you're like me, it's a regular, daily habit. Small but mighty tasty, you'll find quite a wide range of candy and baked creations at their shop. The simple, but cute packaging are filled with chocolate, candies, cookies, & so much more. Turkish delight anyone? Inside their display cases you'll find mainly small round cakes, cupcakes, and tartelettes amongst other delicious baked goods. On top of the cases are large cookie jars filled with macarons. Surely a unique sight, you won't find bright pink, yellow, or bursts of color here. However, what the macarons lack in color, they surely do not lack in flavor. I zeroed in on 3 macarons: dulce de leche, hazelnut, & strawberry. While the hazelnut & strawberry were good, the real gem for me was the dulce de leche. I am a sucker for dulce de leche anything and this was no exception. The macaron itself had a very thin crunchy shell and deliciously chewy inside, including the filling which was thick and almost caramel like. Simply superb and I would highly recommend. I completely fell in love and just had to go back the following day before my flight and bought myself a dozen, plus 3 new flavors I am excited to try. I have a little time on hand before boarding the Alameda/Oakland Ferry to Jack London Square. I have been to the Miette in the Jack London Square area, but not this one. The signage and the assortment of Christmas sweets, macarons in the jars and shortbread cookies caught my eyes. I have 15 minutes to browse and get a little something something to take home. (Alameda/Oakland Ferry arrives at Gate G at 3:55 PM.) So many choices - shortbread cookies, assorted packaged cookies, gingersnaps, macarons, Christmas candy, cupcakes, cakes - and so little time to make a decision. I always like lavender flavored edible items. Thus, I grab the bag of lavender shortbread cookies for $7.00. It is a little pricey, but it's the holiday season and I might as well enjoy it in moderation. For that price, I have to make the pack last for a while. Surprisingly the wait in line is short. There are only two people in front of me. The young lady assisting me is pleasant and rings up my purchase. I am in and out of there in 10 minutes. I'm happy that during the current pandemic, this place is still here. All their items, at least for the most part, are still available. I've visited this spot a few times in the last couple of months and it was great that their displays were full of their typical offerings. I almost always go for the Scharfenberger Cake, which is incredible, and they had plenty of the mini cakes available. It was great to bite into a moist and super chocolatey cake again. The large version of this cake is also available as long as you make a special order for it. It's nice to support this amazing spot! read more

I know that comparing to everything else in the store, your eyes don't immediately go to the humble slice of cheesecake but just trust me on this- get a slice of that cheesecake, you won't regret it. The thick crust, the light yet creamy filling...if you've seen the episode of F.R.I.E.N.D.S where Chandler and Rachel eats the cheesecake from the hallway floor- it's that kind of cheesecake. A true dessert highlight within the Ferry Building. French style pastries, decadent cakes and tons of cute little candies. Perfect for that afternoon sweet tooth. Eclair: Firm and chewy choux pastry shell. Rich vanilla custard inside. Just the right ratio so there's enough but not so much it squirts everywhere. And a bitter chocolate glaze to contrast the choux and the custard. Scharffen Berger Mini-Cake: It's basically like eating a mound of chocolate ganache that happens to have a little cake underneath. Like 3x richer than normal chocolate frosting. The chocolate cake underneath is not bad either. Kinda of the devils food variety. Super indulgent. Chocolate Cupcake w/ Italian Meringue: The meringue frosting looks mesmerizing. Like it's some sort of huge marshmallow, but with a less sticky mouthfeel. A generous heap to pair with the normal sized chocolate cupcake underneath. Feels so much more decadent than the common buttercream frosting alternative. Walnut Brownie: Just as brownie should be. Crispy edges on all sides. Chewy and gooey on the inside. A very thin flaky top layer. And just enough walnuts to add texture but not overwhelm; the small chop was perfect. Pot De Crème: Like pudding but thicker and $5 for 3 small spoonfuls. All the other desserts I tried seemed more satisfying. I mean, it was good, just such a small portion. Stopped by for some Macarons which I love and have tasted many. These are fairly large which at 2.50 per seems like a good price. But the flavor is lacking. I got chocolate lavender (do not recommend) lychee, pistachio & strawberry. The cookies themselves are not smooth and it's hard to tell one from the other except the chocolate got obvious reasons. Pistachio tasted like vanilla, lychee was too light in flavor, chocolate lavender is just not a good combo & strawberry falls flat in flavor. They also obviously use stone ground almond flour and not super fine which you can tell in the pics. The pics are the strawberry and pistachio (I think but it could've been lychee). I definitely won't be revisiting for more. TBH I've had ones from Costco that had better flavor and were pretty. read more

Cakes, cupcakes, chocolates, cookies, macarons, caramels, brittle, marshmallows, meringues, Turkish delight, licorice, gummies, etc. If you have a sweet tooth, this is where it's at. We tried some of their macarons, chocolates, and gummies. They were made with quality ingredients and had a nice consistency. The macarons weren't overly sweet, had a lightly crisp outer shell and was soft within. The filling was flavorful. Their chocolates were smooth and not overly sweet. This location is in the Ferry Building, so it gets crowded quickly and you can feel a bit rushed, but you just have to take your time to decide what you want, because you may just end up buying everything and it could get pricey. I came here to buy candy for friends over the holidays and found exactly what I was looking for. They had a great assortment of gummy candy, chocolate, malt balls, handmade caramels, brittle, and the list goes on. I've had their cookies in the past and enjoyed them. It's so pink and cute! Exactly what you'd expect from a little SF inspired French bakery. I'd never walked down the length of the ferry building before. Lots of sweet treats on the left side! Humphrey Slocombe's ice cream (with its line) plus a soft serve place right next door. I opted for an 8 piece box of macarons. No artificial colorings whatsoever, not even a tint of green for pistachio. All natural ingredients. How does one differentiate between flavors? 8 flavors available on the daily. I took photos of the glass jars and the employee put them into the box in that order. So far I've tried hazelnut, strawberry, and vanilla. The former was just right. Soft, coarsely ground nutty shell for texture, and a simple smattering of thickened hazelnut cream. I didn't realize a majority of the macarons would be filled with buttercream, as was the case with the latter treats. Picking up the strawberry Macaron from the box caused the two shells to slide a bit. No pink tinge there. The vanilla was chewier than the other two! Pleasantly surprised. When I want cake for dinner, I eats cake for dinner. My friend discovered the Strawberry cake and immediately fell in love. I like strawberry cakes too but my favorite would have to be chocolate. The Scharffen Berger is all cake and mousse and I'm all about a balanced ratio of the two but I prefer more cake. If you're gonna charge $9 for a small slice of cake, it better be pretty damn good. Unfortunately, this place was just ok. I got the coconut cream cake and was quite underwhelmed. The cream in the middle had an almost an agar-like consistency (read: not very creamy) and the flavors were very one-dimensional. Maybe some deeply toasted coconut on top instead of the standard dried coconut they actually used for more of a contrast? Some rum in the cake to spice things up a bit more? Miette was a real delight to stumble upon inside the infamous Ferry Building. Cute little patisserie with a beautiful selection of cakes, chocolates, fleur de sel caramels, gummy bears, beverages and drum roll please.... MACARONS! There are 8 extraordinary flavors ranging from Rose to Lemon but what really caught my attention was the lack of color that I'm use to when macaroon binging. We see Pistachio and expect green right? Nope, not these all organic delicacies. When the young lady explained the lack of color I was sold. This was more than a pretty bakery, they are conscious of their product and opt for a more natural way of producing goodies we just can't seem to deny ourselves. A few years ago there was this boy, (Let's call him Abercrombie, since he worked there and that's all he wore) I dated "briefly" who was so cute! I almost couldn't believe he was interested in me. He was cute, conveniently close to me, went to the same college as me, and had a job. Wrap him up, I'll take him to go. The first time we "hooked up" it lasted a mere seconds. Two thrusts and pop goes the weasel! I guess they relied on their looks for so long they feel like they don't have to try anymore. Miette should focus less on aesthetics and more on flavor. I stumbled upon this place after Yelping where to get macarons as a gift. I opted to go to the Ferry Location vs the Hayes Valley one since it was closer to where I work. I did hear that the Hayes location does Happy Hour where macarons are on sale for $1 a piece (def need to check that out later). Being in SF and all I expected the prices to be more expensive, but $2/each is higher than I thought it would be. I ended up getting a box of 8 (no discounts for boxes). The macarons are placed in cute glass jars so you can see the assortment. I thought it as weird that they all looked the same/didn't have food coloring because it made it hard for me to differentiate the flavors once they were in the box. I would def recommend the pistachio & rose flavors! The other ones were alright, but didn't really stand out to me. The consistency was just right for a macaron but the inside is def more whipped than what I'm used to. You can also taste the crushed almonds they use for the batter in each bite as well. They have tons of other sweets at the shop too that looked great to try. Be warned that things are usually min of $7 for a bag before you go crazy! read more

They placed the stash in a pink box and put the box into one of their fru-fru shopping bags. I took said bag onto the #1 Muni where I was met with patronizing glares of derision from a couple of thugs. Was I to be the object of a potential hate crime ...a potential petty theft ...or did they want to point out that my socks didn't match? I think they just wanted my cupcakes. But nobody touches my cupcakes unless I want my cupcakes to be touched. Chocolate cupcake with a chocolate truffle ganache. Another chocolate with a marshmallow cream. Yellow cake with a light buttercream. Gingerbread with cream cheese. I made it to the party where the cupcakes were devoured before the Best Short Subject (Animated) award. They didn't even make it to the "In Memoriam" tribute. I've had Miette's cupcakes before, Kara's too...here's the thing - I think the cake part is boring, but the frosting is always tasty, never as sickening sweet as I anticipate due to a childhood spent eating Betty Crocker's Ready-To-Serve Frosting from the can. I really like the look of Miette Patisserie - cute packaged goods filled with cookies, macarons, cupcakes, cakes, etc. The prices are also pretty generous for a small boutique located in the ferry building. I came to Miette with the intention to buy macarons and even though the lack of color in all of the different flavors was off-putting, I still bought 6 just to try. The girls behind the counter were pretty helpful, but seemed to be in a hurry to finish helping me. They packaged the macarons in a small Asian to-go box - each macaron was $1.75 I believe. So I believe that all of Miette's macarons contain the same flavored shell with the inside filling being different. The shell didn't have much taste at all, and the only flavor I liked was rose. Chocolate, hazelnut, pistachio, green tea were too sweet and didn't taste very good while the last flavor wasn't memorable at all. The filling for rose was great and captured that flowery essence without being too overpowering; however, the shell lacked flavor and was much too crumbly for me. My very first visit to Miette was when I was on a quest last year to put a dent into 7x7's List of "100 Things to Try Before You Die": #49 - Miette's Gingersnaps. One day, I want to stuff Miette cupcakes into an emptied plastic cupcake container from Safeway, bring them to a potluck gathering, and observe to see if anyone notices. I admit that I have failed to jump on to the latest cupcake craze, so I am not the best person to accurately judge cupcakes. I continue to be unsuccessful in discovering what is so special about these simple desserts, which I have been eating since I was a child. It was not special when I was 9 years-old, and it's not so special now. For some reason, I thought cupcakes were popular because it was something easy to make at home. I cannot tell. To me, cupcakes are not interesting enough where I could differentiate the taste. To me, as long as they are fresh, it all tastes like......well, cupcakes. I will admit that Miette's butter cream was quite enjoyable. I usually do not care for butter cream because of the overwhelming sweetness, but frosting on Miette's cupcakes were just right. OTHER THAN CUPCAKES: I've bought their ginger cake before, which was good, but not great. I felt that it was a bit too sweet. This is located in a prime real estate location in SF, where there are a lot of options of grabbing a snack. We decided to give this location a shot as the line was a bit shorter and we were in a bit of hurry. The food itself is simply OK, but it's a bit overpriced for what you get. Let me repeat myself. Overpriced, overpriced, and overpriced. I ordered a mini chocolate cake thing for $6.50 and it was a bit on the bland side. Small and bland. Meh. I could go to Safeway and get an amazing quality cake for that price. Still, the shop is cute and friendly, so I'll give them that. Overall, it's pretty good, but nothing special. read more

I feel like four stars is spot on. During my third day of moseying through the Ferry Building Marketplace, I popped in to Miette Patisserie to purchase some "artisanal-style" gummies for my partner-in-crime. The shop is quaint and charming with light and airy colors and pretty displays and packaging. I honestly think my experience would have been closer to a 5 had the staff been a little friendlier and enthusiastic about the product. I was informed the gummies were good but it didn't seem that they were mind-blowingly delicious to match the price point. Next time I'll give the toffee bark a whirl. Apparently, I should also try the cheesecake next time. read more

We stumbled upon Miette while exploring the Ferry Building (Miette is located inside), not knowing how widely acclaimed it was. Miette means "little crumb" in French. It's a small, European-inspired pastry shop that opened in 2001. The storefront is simple and elegant with cakes, cupcakes, cookies, macarons, and other delightful confections on display. Packaging and presentation is nice. Cakes and cupcakes are on display behind crystal clear glass display cases, cookies are neatly stacked on a table out front, and macarons are stored in glass jars. We ordered one of every macaron they had available that day. The macaron flavors were: - Chocolate Orange - Vanilla - Rose Geranium - Pistachio - Hazelnut - Grapefruit - Chocolate They weren't exactly cheap at $1.85 a pop, but expectations were high given the looks of the macarons, the store, and where we were (the culinary destination that is the Ferry Building). The quality was indeed superb. The macarons were made out of coursely-ground almond meringue cookies and filled with a buttercream or ganache. They were delicious. I enjoyed all the flavors except for the Rose Geranium. This is a personal preference, but they were too flowery in taste for me. Regardless of flavor, each macaron was simple, rich, and delicate. I could tell the pieces were fresh. They were slightly moist and easily melted in my mouth. Each bite was a bite of joy. That is the sign of an excellent macaron! So, I recommend Miette and look forward to trying one of their cakes, cupcakes, and/or cookies during one of my future visits to San Francisco. read more

The World According to Noelle Allergic Girl's Guide to Life After shopping at Sur La Table and picking up lunch at the Acme Bread Company we decided make a stop at Miette for some sweet treats. It was extremely crowded. We picked up: Caramel Candy (Hard Candy) Cotton Candy (Hard Candy) Salted Caramels (Soft) Blueberry Jam with Meyer Lemon Ginger Snaps Meyer Lemon Curd Tart Caramel Pot de Creme Chocolate Pot de Creme The hard caramel candy and cotton candy were just okay tasting (25 cents a piece). The Salted Caramels (with Fleur de sel) was melt in your mouth delicious (expensive a little over $2.00 a piece). The Ginger Snaps were buttery, sweet and a lil spicy. I was majorly disappointed in Caramel Pot de Creme and Chocolate Pot de Creme- they were not rich, they were not flavorful. The lemon curd tart was a perfect combination of sweet and tart with the most delicious crust ever- seriously the best lemon curd tart I've ever had. We'll try the jam out tomorrow. The person behind the counter was rushing me to make a decision, I told her twice that I couldn't see the other glass case because there were two people ahead of us blocking the view. It turns out the people ahead of us only bought one macaroon each but were just taking a long look at the case. I didn't like the abrupt attitude from the customer service person. When I'm spending $5 or $50 I expect good customer service. Here the customer service was CLEARLY LACKING. Icing on the Cake in Los Gatos is still our family's favorite for sweet treats and candy confections. For a better chocolate pot de creme try Gayle's in Capitola. Miette is good but not great. Conveniently located in the Ferry Building, Miette Patisserie has pastel walls covered with candy, glowing cases filled with cupcakes, cakes and gorgeous glass jars that are filled to the brim with various macarons, caramels, meringues, and candies. It is a beautiful store. It is one of the sweetest little bakery and candy shops you will find. From all of these sugary offerings I chose to try the cupcakes! Old Fashion Cupcake ~ is super moist chocolate cake topped with boiled icing a ooey gooey marshmallow icing, I don't think I have ever had boiled icing before, and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It wasn't horribly sweet like most buttercreams and had a phenomenal texture that complimented the dense and rich chocolate cake. The frosting was fluffy and sweet--utterly perfect. Yellow vanilla cupcake ~ that had a fresh refreshing silky vanilla buttercream icing, that tasted more amazing than a glass of water the morning after a hard night of drinking. Carrot Cupcake -The cake was perfectly soft and had a perfect addition of crunchy currants and walnuts, and the Cream Cheese frosting, well, who can go wrong with a kick ass cream cheese frosting.
