Got an order to go: miso soup, tempura appetizer and Samurai roll. I asked for extra wasabi and they remembered. The girl who took my order on the phone was very nice and helpful. I've seen Matsuyama for years, but for some reason never went there or got take out. Tonight I see that was a mistake, as it was terrific. One thing to point out was the tempura. I live 15-20 minutes away, had a few other things to put away when I got home, but by the time I sat down and plated my meal the tempura was still good: crispy and not soggy. Ordering fried foods especially tempura can be most disappointing and typically even with a short ride they can be lack luster. Can't imagine how good it is fresh there at the restaurant. If you've not been there, go check it out. If it's been a while, go back. I know I will be going back for sure. This is, Hands down, our favorite sushi place since moving out here to the Valley. Their sashimi is thick. The hubby loves trying different rolls every time, but so far, from all the rolls we've tried from here, the San Francisco is pretty up there and worth trying. Salmon Sashimi: the combo comes with rice, miso, and salad. The pieces are cut to perfection, and they're thick pieces. I enjoy this with their salad and a little bit of rice. San Francisco Roll, INSIDE: deep-fried shrimp and crab mayo. OUTSIDE: spicy salmon, avocado, fried asparagus, and tobiko on top. Oh, so delicious!!!! Chicken Katsu: my big kid can't eat fish, so he usually gets this, and he finished it super fast. He said it was crispy and super tasty. The big kid approves. read more

I remember reading someone's review about this place and they were talking about how this place had the best bento boxes... In my head I thought "how different can a Bento box really be?" Especially when all I get is teriyaki chicken and a California roll. Well..... I was so pleasantly surprised! That review deserves a gold star and a couple of compliments because this place really does have the best bento boxes. The chicken teriyaki was seasoned wonderfully and didn't have too much fat attached. The California roll was absolutely delicious, the soup, salad and rice were all cooked to perfection. The tempura was so crispy even though we were a few minutes late to pick up our to-go order. Even though these may seem all like simple recipes this restaurant takes it one step further and perfects them. Decided to give this place a try as we were in the area . Was a bit hesitant but they definitely met our standards ! After our last visit to a sushi restaurant (Kimoto), personally I was a bit traumatized about eating at a sushi restaurant in the central valley. Matsuyama restored my faith in good quality sushi restaurant. Hubby and I ordered their bento box (teriyaki chicken, tempura, and sashimi). The sashimi was fresh (no funky color or flavor), the chicken was cooked thoroughly and the tempura was to perfection. They even snuck in some edamame under my rice bowl. BONUS! The service was friendly and fast. Our bento came with soup and salad (as with most sushi restaurant). The miso soup was perfect but with a slight sweetness to it. OMG....watch out for their wasabi. Even though I've since moved cities, this place has been my go-to for around 5 years. The staff are very friendly and thoroughly cautious about my allergy to avocado. Now, if you're a little more adventurous, I recommend trying their Hamachi sashimi. Don't knock it till you try it! They have very accommodating seeting. All including tables, booths, and a bar. Everything was great considering a fews things imo. The age tofu was good with the ginger sauce. Hot and tasty to your tablet. Be careful. Don't burn your mouth. The salmon kama was my favorite. The portion was huge! A meal in itself. I think i just got lucky that day. The single wedge of lemon was just enough to compliment the collars. Nicely grilled or broiled with tasty, slightly charred skin. Fatty, meaty, tasty flesh that gets cut by the before mention lenom and that sauce they serve it with. I'm guessing it's a soy sauce with yuzu sauce with chopped green onion. The thousand island salad we all know and slight love was good. The miso soup was very good. Could have had another. Now the Happy Sushi. I got the happy sushi because nowhere on the menu was an option for ala cart nigiri. Which was a bummer for me. On the other hand, the portion of the fish was great. It was like 2 to 1 ratio with the rice. Only slightly imperfections was one end of a certain cut of fish was slightly air dried. It's not a big deal because I know this shi is expensive, and to discard it would be like throwing money away. I recently re watched Anthony Bourdains Parts Unknown, where he visited his sushi chef friend I'm Japan and spoke about the hustle of buying sometimes fresh less desirable fish and or buying the more desirable less fresh fish at a discount. They mentioned how people have the idea that the freshness of the fish makes for the best nigiri or sushi when, in reality, the best nigiri or sushi starts with great rice and the fish second. The service was great. Was greeted immediately and waited upon quickly. Food prep time was great considering what I ordered. That kama takes some time to prep and cook. The sushi bar chefs were cool peeps and very skilled and knowledgeable when randomly approached for impromptu questions about the cuts of fish.
