Tri-tip Sandwich was excellent! I enjoyed the BBQ sauce that came with it but it is on the sweet side. Also had the chili beans and potato salad. I did not like the beans. They just didn't have that homemade taste to them abd the potato salad was OK. Definitely recommend for the Tri-tip alone. Also was a little bummed it was a stand and not a sit down restuarant. I always thought it was a coffee kiosk so I actually looked at the sign and saw it was a grill. Had a trip tip slider and it wasn't bad, pretty tasty. The potato salad didn't lyrics really knock my socks off, but I added a smidge of their BBQ sauce to it to liven it up. One of the best tri trip sandwiches I have had in a while. really good BBQ sauce. the rice pilaf was so good and buttery. the bread was really good as well. They aren't lying. This is the best tri-tp in Fresno. I ordered jumbo tri-tip sandwiches and brought them home for dinner. My wife, who at time abuses barbecue sauce, did the strangest thing. She peeled off the top piece of bread and ate almost all of the tri-tip, bite by bite, unaccompanied. I did the same thing. The meat is smoky and tender, sliced perfectly, and layered generously. The sandwich roll is crispy and perfectly suited to the tri-tip. No need for sauce. I can't wait to try the ribs. read more

Had the Tri-Tip sandwich. It was very good. The bread was toasted with what seemed to be butter and garlic. The meat was tender with a good amount of smoke. Its up there with Dog House...I wouldn't say better than though. read more

This is the best barbecue in town hands down. It may not be your conventional restaurant, but Holy Smokes! Instead of having all the overhead of a sit down restaurant, these guys completely focus on perfecting their barbecue at a very reasonable price. If you want to sit down and eat, there is an area to do so with tables, chairs, and an awning. Great staff and the owner Mike checks in with his customers when he's there. Food is good but the wait times are ridiculous. I called ahead and they said it would be 15 minutes. There were three kids working and two people waiting. I got there almost 30 minutes later due to traffic but not only did I have to wait in line for ten minutes just to pay but after I paid I had to wait another 10 minutes to get my order. What I ordered was the barbecued items that nobody ever left their enclosure to retrieve. I could understand if the items weren't prepared yet and they had to wait on them to be done but that wasn't the case. I would have preferred if they told me we don't take phone orders just show up and order it. Everybody in line was grumbling about the same thing. I've been coming here for years and remember when the owner was present. Things moved a lot faster. Fresno is lacking good barbecue places so I will continue to patronize this place. If the owner or management care at all however they should instill the same level of care from their employees do the same. read more

As soon as we walked up, the line was out the door and minutes later, there was a line around the building! The tri-tip sandwich was incredibly good. The meat was delicious, the french roll was very good and the perfect size to compliment the meat without being too bready. Delicious food, fast service and great prices. Mike's Grill looks like a little sandwich shop with outdoor seating; however don't let first appearances fool you. Their tri-tip is as good as it gets, maybe better, and the homemade sauce is out of this world! When we're in the Cedar/Herndon area, we always end up at Mike's Grill. Prepare your self for a wait they are supper slow. lf you call in your order your wasting your time. if you do they say 10 or 15 min but they dont start your order till you get there and pay this happened to me every single time l called ahead. Now for the food besides being expensive l rate the tri tip sandwiches 4.5 stars the meat is tender with a light smoke the rolls are brushed with garlic butter and tosted l think thats what makes them so tasty $8 for regular or $10 for extra meat. I suggest to eat them quick or they will get soggy. The hot links 3.5 stars cuz you dont get enough meat otherwise their pretty tasty. The ribs 3 stars lve had worse and lve had better. The bbq sauce 0.5 stars its probably the worst sauce l ever had its really dark like they use way too much molasses and it has a really strong mollasses flavor your better off bringing a bottle from your frige. read more

I will admit the tri tip sandwich was good. It is the customer service I have a problem with. When Mike, the owner, is there, the service is perfect. Unfortunately when Mike is not there, it is ran by some 20 year old LAZY boys. It took them over 8 minutes to get our drinks out to us when we were the only customers there. There were Two guys working, one with a black long ponytail and the another with light brown hair. They talked and goofed around more than they wanted to work. While we were sitting down eating, we saw two older ladies order and sit down. The guy with the the light colored hair dropped off their drinks. The older lady asked, "where are the straws?" The guy said "its over there" and pointed to the area where you.place your order at. He turned and walked away. The ladies looked in awe and said something to each other as the guy walked back and goofed around some more.. As a paid employee, and as a gentleman, the guy should have walked over to get the straws for the ladies. read more

I liked this place. It wasn't the greatest ever but I like the setup. Clearly someone who enjoyed what they were doing and working to expand as much as they could. I got the bigger sized tri tip sandwich with a side of beans. The sandwich was definitely worth the price and while it wasn't the exact flavor profile that I'm used to it was still good. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't some exotic, strange flavor or anything it was just a little different taste than the way I make mine or other places I've been make theirs. They use garlic bread for the sandwich which I appreciate because too many places now are just tossing meat on bread/buns fresh from the factory plastic. The bread was not toasted completely crispy like I prefer but I can handle a moist garlic bread better than a dry unprepared bun. The beans were nothing special but not gross. I followed another reviewers advice and put some barbecue sauce in them and it was enough to make me want to finish them. I won't drive out of the way for it but if I'm in the vicinity I'll go there over anything else. read more

Mike, I had your half rack pork ribs and a side of chili beans on my first visit to your food stand. Nothing about the food was worth praising. The meat had little flavor and was dry, the BBQ sauce was bland; the chili beans were OK but not above average. I had to stop and think about how Mike's Grill could be touted as the Best BBQ in Fresno. The price for dinner was $18.50 and I ate it at your outside tables where the flies also eat your food (and mine). The best advice I can offer you is to stay in Fresno and be good to your customers. If you were to expand your business out of the Fresno area you would get spanked and send home. You're not ready for prime time! read more

I have tried every tri-tip sandwich in the Fresno area. No one beats Mikes. It's that simple.

I really wanted to love this place like everyone else seemed to love it. But no, that did not happen for me. The regular tri-tip sandwich seemed lacking in meat for the price. So if you like a good portion (as far as I am concerned the right portion) of meat you will want to double the meat. The tri-tip itself had a nice flavor and was good. What I didn't like is that the only condiment they have is BBQ sauce. I absolutely love tri-tip, it would be something I would order for my last meal. Personally I do not feel the need to put BBQ sauce on my meat to enjoy it. Don't get me wrong they have a good BBQ sauce and this is the only tri-tip that I do put sauce on but that is mainly because the sandwich is way too dry without it. As for the pulled pork it was way to mushy and did not work well with the coleslaw. The sides were not impressive. But that is just my opinion, if you love BBQ sauce on your tri-tip you will probably love Mike's so give it a try for yourself. read more
