Zero stars if I could. Even the ranch dressing was weak .... salad was large chunks of tasteless vegetables. Except for the huge amount of onions they put in it. I ordered a chicken philly which arrived looking like it had been smashed, without cheese and almost without chicken. I sent it back and basically no one cared that food was sub par. This was my first and most likely, last time at this restaurant. The services was very poor. I am most frustrated that a manager did not apologize once about the experience. It's ok. It's better than pizza hut, dominos, etc but nowhere near Waldo Pizza. Now, I realize Waldo pizza is St. Louis style and Minsky's is possibly trying to edge towards St. Louis style, but it's not happening. The sauce was lacking true flavor. It was average at best. We ordered the honey wheat thin crust which is hard to get down as far as crust goes. The edges were perfectly toasted with a light brown color. The bottom of the crust was a little soft. I'll start out by saying that on Valentine's Day, my wife and I did not plan on going to Minsky's in Shawnee. But after looking at the lines at various other eating establishments in the area, we defaulted to here. We were seated almost immediately when we entered the restaurant, which was surprising, given the place was packed, and remained that way while we were there. Most of the patrons appeared to be kids and parents. We were working on a time-clock due to having a movie we wanted to see, so we opted for something quick and not pizza. We each chose a calzone. My wife chose a vegetarian special with wheat crust while I chose a 4-ingredient combo with Italian sausage, Canadian bacon, mushrooms and garlic with the traditional white crust. We only chose water for drinks, but we did add salads to the choices. The salads were basic iceberg lettuce and assorted other things from a bag. The dressings were okay but also unremarkable. Our calzones were ready in about 20 minutes, which did not surprise me, given the amount of business they were doing. However, what did surprise me was they did not come with any kind of marinara sauce, and if we wanted it, that would be $.50 extra per calzone. We decided to order some, but it never came. Fortunately we were able to get our waitress to take that off our bill. So a dry calzone is not a great calzone, but it was okay. I wish I had ordered the wheat crust. They were certainly plentiful in size. My wife took 1/2 of her calzone home. In the end, I agree with reviewer Stephanie N. who equates this as being better than Pizza Hut or Domino's but nothing special. I found it to be rather pedestrian myself. I remember when Minsky's first appeared in the KC area and it was rather good and unique at that time. Now, not so much. The wait staff appeared to be hustling but were overwhelmed, and so our service suffered. They could have easily added 1-2 more wait staff to handle the crowd. I'm not sure if this was because it was Valentine's day (not many couples besides us that night) or if Monday nights are always like this, but in these days I would think IF you're doing this kind of business on a regular weeknight, finding an extra body or 2 to service your customers would not be hard. So all in all, Minsky's is probably okay in an emergency or to get out of a big-chain rut but don't make any special effort to go. read more

I have not had a good experience here before, but I decided to try it again due to the long wait at Eggcetera next door as we were really hungry at the time. My previous experience was that the service was ok, and the ingredients themselves tasted good, but the crust was horrible and to me the crust can make or break a pizza. This time around, our experience was even worse. We walked in and were seated right away. Our server looked like she had been up all night drinking. I can't fault her for that necessarily because I like to go out and drink on the weekends myself. What I do fault her for is her bad attitude and lack of friendly service. If you're going to go out and drink full well knowing that you have to work the next day, suck it up and put a smile on your face if you plan on getting tips that day. I'm an ex server and I know how tough that can be, but I dealt with it because that was my choice. Since I was so hungry, I decided to order a salad. When it came out, it was more like a bowl of lettuce with a side of misery. The cucumbers on the side looked like they had been sitting out all day, the tomato was not ripe at all, and the pepperoncini looked more like a pickle than a pepperoncini. Their "house" Italian dressing tasted more like oil and vinegar with oregano thrown into it. At this point, I'm regretting not going to Eggcetera...but we still had a glimpse of hope for the pizza. We ordered a thin crust original with sausage, mushroom, and onion. Dissapointed yet again. The pizza came out loaded with a puddle of grease on top of the cheese. I proceeded to sop it up with a napkin, easy fix. What I couldn't fix was the crust that was so soaked with grease that the limp, soggy remnants of a pizza fell apart as I moved a slice to my plate from the plastic, grease laden pizza dish. Ok, so after all this time and being so hungry, I was a bit irritated. The server came over to see how everything was, but I refrained from saying how I really felt and simply said the crust was soggy. She proceeded to take the pizza back and was going to put it in the oven to crisp it up a bit. The manager came over 5 minutes later and said they were putting a whole new pizza in. I probably would have been ok with this if I wasn't so hungry and had my whole day to waste so that's frankly what I told him. He said "I already put another pizza in for you, but it doesn't sound like anything I do is going to make you happy?" (Record scratch...) WHAT?! A manager with this behavior should not be in this business. I've spent way too long writing this review as it is, but I feel it is important to forewarn others who read the other reviews and expect a good pizza. Ok, enough ranting and raving.... Long story short, I will never be going to this specific Minskys again. If you like Minskys, I'd go to another location where you can at least get a greasy pizza with a smile. Better yet, go to Waldo pizza where they actually serve good pizza. read more

I love minskys but to go orders are never as good as when you order there. My calzones are never completely cooked and something is always missing. This time it was the egg and breadsticks with the house salad. I love the variety of toppings and food options. Gluten free and dairy free cheese along with veggie balls is impressive. I had the calzone with veggie balls, roasted garlic, onion and green olive. Minus being raw on one edge it was delicious. Note that veggie balls are actually like a ground veggie meat not balls. Sorry Minskys you are a place I have frequented much over the years. Unfortunately for you, Art of Pizza and Grinders have to be placed higher on my pizza scale in KC. This truly is a family favorite though and convenient location for us. I don't know how to classify this pizza though. It's definitely not NY style and not Chicago Style. It's something altogether unique I think. And I have to say I like it. You have to try the cheeseburger. I don't want to have the cheeseburger pizza every time I visit but it is a truly altogether different pizza experience. I was reluctant too as many other people, but most agree it is great if for no other reason than to do something different. Do yourself a favor and get the wheat crust. It's better for you and I believe that you will learn to love it. So consistent across all the local KC chains too. My faves are: Cheeseburger, Combo, Canadian Bacon and Italian Sausage. The only three variations I will eat here. I dunno why but for like 10 years that is it. Please all I ask is that you say no to the likes of California Pizza Kitchen. It is an offense. read more

Loved the cheese on the pizza which is a mix of mozzarella and Romano cheese. We got the Seafood Elite pizza and Papa Minsky's on thin crust (its not super thin but thinner than the original). Both were pretty good but we enjoyed the Seafood Elite a bit more than the latter. We also got a house salad to share which was a great size especially for the price. We had a basketball dinner here around 9:30 and they accommodated us easily. The pizza here is good. Fresh ingredients and we loved the thin crust. The side salads were small and unmemorable. The traditional buffalo boneless wings were standard - tasted more batter than chicken. Also, I enjoyed the gyro since I wasn't initially going to try pizza. Quite simply, I think Minskys is the best pizza in KC. We've never had a bad experience (knock on wood), and hate that we moved too far away to make this a regular stop any more. The only thing keeping this from a 5 Star review is the pricing. While fair for the quality, it is one of the more expensive pies in town, which makes it a $30 pizza dinner most times for us, which is a bit steep. They do have an awesome lunch special though, which is 5 Stars all the way for Price and Quality. read more

I typically don't write poor reviews until after trying to come to a resolution with management however, this experience was very poorly handled. I have had Minsky's on numerous occasions at work functions (Olathe location) and the pizza was always delicious. I decided to place a to-go order for two pizzas. I placed the order at 6:13 pm on a Sunday. I was told that it would be 30-40 minutes. I was picking the order up on my way home so I didn't leave my location until about 20 minutes later. I arrived at Minsky's at 6:45 and gave the cashier my name. She told me that it would be another 30-45 minutes before my order was ready because "the kitchen got very busy". I proceeded to cancel my order because I was not going to stand around and wait. I COMPLETELY understand the kitchen getting backed up and I would have been more than willing to wait another 10 or 15 minutes but any longer than that? Absolutely not. I would have at least appreciated a phone call giving me a heads up that it may take a little longer than expected. I called the store to speak with a manager. The woman on the phone told me that the manager, Heather, was busy making pizzas but that she would take down my name and info and give me a call back when she was free. Three days later and I have yet to hear from anyone. Like I said, I try not to bash a business before attempting to remedy the situation but Minsky's on Renner has lost a customer and from reading other reviews, it sounds like speediness is not their forte. read more

Just leave it off as your making it I said. To be or not to be, that is the question. In the case of the Shawnee Minsky's Pizza, is it not to be. I had called to place an order for delivery since their website would not allow my order to go through. The person that answered the phone was not interested in taking an order and was not very helpful. When the representative asked for my address, I shared it with her. She then immediately stated that they do not deliver to my location. I asked how this could be, since their website, which I checked before calling, stated that I was well within their delivery zone. She did not know and stated that they could not deliver to me. I asked if she could check on this. She talked to her manager and found out after having Googled my address that I was in fact within their delivery zone. She proceeded to take my order. All was going okay until it was time to make payment over the phone. The amount that she requested was almost $6 higher than what they website reflected that it would be. I asked why it was higher and I was told that the delivery charge is greater for my area. I asked how much it was and she responded that it was twice as much as what is listed on their website. I asked her about this and she did not have an answer. I placed the order anyway and was told that it would be 45 minutes to an hour for the pizza to be delivered. Overall, it seems that their staff are not trained, they lack the most basic skills in customer service, and do not seem to care about the disconnects that exist between what is on their website, what their staff say, and what is shared on their telephone while you are on hold with them. Fingers crossed that the food is amazing to offset and make up for the fact that there is a whole lot of false advertising going on here with a healthy dose of rude staff mixed in. read more

A classic old school style pizzeria. This is the type of place you go to after little league baseball or soccer games. This is a fairly new location from what I've been told and is based off the original Minsky's from downtown. The menu is quite vast with various gourmet style pizzas, calzones, and sandwiches. The appetizer selection is quite plentiful as well. The restaurant itself is extremely nice and clean and has a very homey country feel to it. The food is fabulous. Pizzas are loaded and very well sized. They do offer a honey wheat crust as an option which adds a nice sweet flavor to the pizzas. You get ample amounts of food for appetizers (count a dozen mozzarella sticks for one order $4.95). The Garlic cheese toast was amazingly good. Baked on regular wonder bread, the seasonings and freshly melted cheese was mighty darn tasty. Throw in the fact you're getting a dozen pieces for $3.95, I'm sold. We have gone to this Minsky's too many times in the past 2 months because we just moved into the area, and the fact that their pizza and pasta is excellent. The cheese bread sticks are a great way to kick things off. Then, if I am not feeling like pizza (rare) I order their spicy sausage pasta. It is marked as one of their specialties on their menu and it is excellent. Great for leftovers. The pizza is good too. I like their wheat crust, especially with the vegetarian pizza, even though I am nowhere near being a vegetarian! The staff is nice but not overbearing.
