Unhinged and dangerous owner/manager. The food here has never been much in terms of quality or quantity, and it's extremely expensive. You pay for the interior and the experience. Last night my 10 year old and I were served a raw steak ( see below). When we complained, we were told that some people like it that way so we were to shut up, pay and leave! I called for the manager who simply called the police! I was stunned. We were forced to pay for this garbage after being threatened. They have a pretty good size parking lot in the back/side and that's always nice. I would definitely recommend. Came here for dinner to celebrate mother day and what a wonderful experience it was. The service here is phenomenal, the manager (Alex) was so friendly and inviting. He stopped by a few times to check in on us. The waiters were so busy! You have to give them some serious credit for the amount of work they were doing and still providing such attentive service. My water cup never went below half filled. We had even brought a cake of our own and the servers made sure to keep it refrigerated, then took it out and set up candles, sang to us, and even cut the cake for us. It was just unbelievable and amazing service. The food was equally excellent. Its a more modern interpretation on traditional chinese recipes. My parents had a gripe that the three cup chicken (san bei ji) wasn't prepared with basil but honestly, I loved the inventiveness. The chef added his own sense of newness and incorporated his own touch into these dishes. Despite the dishes being less traditional, my parents definitely agreed 100% that the food was all so delicious. The hong kong beef was tender tender tender. How do they do that?! Everything was artfully presented and wonderfully cooked. For this reason, this place is perfect for celebrations and dates as well as casual meals. We will definitely be back. read more

First time back here since pre pandemic. Food was always good and still excellent. We don't live closely but well worth the trip. Happy moonstone family is in a birds nest of light crispy potato with a delicious sauce and fresh pork, chicken, scallops, shrimp, beef and veggies. The chicken fried rice was outstanding. House special wonton soup scrumptious. Key Lime tart for dessert was very fresh and delicious. Portions are very large. Restaurant is spacious and very clean and well lit. Well, an upscale ChInese restaurant that serves Japanese food as well may be hard to pull off, but this place is very, very good. Portions are enormous and prices are predictably high. It seems to be heavily Cantonese, and that's okay but it does rather highlight the price point since at the end of the day, we kind of think of Cantonese as the most accessible and therefore lower somewhat in price. Prawns are large, presentation is unusually nice and creative (for a ChInese restaurant especially). We were a party of 10 and everything was delicious. More I cannot say, other than the fact that the deliberate approach to a higher end place, and the always expectedly high overhead given the address (Great Neck) could cause a restaurant to smack of opportunism, but in the case of Moonstone, the price point seems warranted. Moonstone is a lovely looking comfortable and classy type of place that is a more glamorous version of the old school Chinese places we used to visit back in the day. You start off with a bowl of large crunchy noodles served along some duck sauce and spicy mustard; man I love those. The menu is large and includes sushi, and some standard dishes like teriyaki, Moo Shu Pork, Kung Pao Chicken and Sweet & Sour Shrimp. They also have a decent wine list. Ala Cart pricing is a bit on the high side for these standard dishes. They also offer a $35 4 course pre-fix which is a pretty good deal and includes soup, appetizer, entree and dessert. The hot and Sour soup was a great spicy version of the classic. For the app I opt'd for the Tuna Avocado roll which was nice and fresh. I tasted the Scallion Pancake and it was delicious. The General Tso's Jumbo Prawn entree was good, but even though it was marked spicy, it definitely was not. Dessert was a bit of a let down since you chose between ice cream or sorbet. I think this restaurant has some really great points which will make me visit again. I loved the food. The dim sum was amazing. Some of the best that I've had in a long time. The ambiance is decent, I know sometimes its hard to find a trendy Chinese restaurant. Seating wasn't overly close to other tables. Another great feature was the parking. We didn't have to waste time searching for a parking spot on the street. My only drawback was the service. Our waiter was a bit abrupt, however we were there to try the food so we didn't want to complain right off the back. I thought she could have been more friendly and accommodating. Dined on a Saturday evening at Moonstone. Decor reminiscent of a Hong Kong restaurant. Service tried hard. Slow kitchen but the chairs and banquets were incredibly comfortable so the wait wasn't painful. Unfortunately, this place didn't "wow" me except for the prices! The complementary chips were great as were the two dipping sauces so the place sure had promise. The Shrimp Wonton soup was ordinary. Sashimi Fish Tacos were too cold and the fish seemed to be coated lightly with olive oil which I guess reduced the chance of a fishy taste but shouldn't be used on sashimi grade fish. Tangerine Scallops were OK. Bass steamed two ways (Black Bean Sauce and Ginger Sauce) were both underwhelming. Complementary ice cream, because of the wait between courses was excellent. But overall, the lack of a "wow" factor detracted big time from the meal, especially considering the prices (the tacos were $26 and the bass $44). The menu is vast and covers multiple Asian cuisines so maybe they do some better than others. But honestly, the price just seems too high given the quality of the food. read more

First time came here with my boss and her husband. Very peaceful here on Saturday afternoon, I was surprised they could find this place. Looked like Chinese and some other kinds of combination. Pretty clean and cozy, decoration is good as well. They had a bar on the other side, I guess they have more customers at nights and weekends. Saturday noon time they had lunch special, you can choose depends on your own. They have veggie section as well, very reasonable. I guess I'll recommend my friends come here next time. read more

I recently did a large takeout order with them and I ordered a fresh, whole fish (Steamed Black Bass). It is one of the more expensive dishes on the menu ($54) but I had thought, why not? Sounds awesome and if it tastes awesome, it's worth it. Unfortunately, it was NOT FRESH. It was really fishy and tasted like an open can of tuna sitting in the sun on a hot summer day. Bleh. We threw it out immediately. I called the restaurant the next day to ask for a refund or something to "make it right", and spoke with Jenny. She conferred with the manager and then she asked me if I had kept the bad fish for them to inspect. She said that only then, after I had brought in the fish to show them and confirm that I wasn't lying, would they offer a refund. I had thought they were a high-end restaurant and I didn't think to ever keep the nasty fish to show as proof. I was totally surprised at this response and continued to explain the situation and how I've been a loyal, regular customer. She did not offer anything, no store credit, no replacement fish, not even a *fortune cookie*. She kept saying that I should have kept the spoiled fish to show her. I ended the call with a bad taste in my mouth (on many levels). Moonstone portrays itself as a fancy, high-end Asian restaurant, but my experience shows otherwise. You pay a lot of money for your food, but it's no better than a Chinatown hole-in-the-wall. Fancy, high end restaurants would not serve rotten fish for $54. This property has gone through a few changes but this new version of Asian fusion truly was a pleasant surprise! As soon as we walked onto the floor we were greeted with respect and a welcoming approach normally seen in high end Michelin properties. White cloth table tops with beautiful silverware sets the tone. Our waiter Brian could not have been more attentive and coursed our our 15 plate meal without a blink of an eye! Each plate was a pleasure to look at, a delight to eat and seasoned accordingly to its origin. All the fish where undeniably fresh ( high turn over and demand palates ) which was an added bonus! Arghhh I wanted to like this place more, I really did....but the food was just so...blahh.. And it's all about the food really isn't it? My family and I were Harvest Buffet fans back in the day so we decided to try this new place for my aunt's birthday. Upon walking in I noticed the decor was very modern/chic with an Asian theme. There was a bar to the right that looked like it belonged in a trendy nightclub. The waiters were very nice and friendly and eager to answer any questions we had. When the food came, the peking duck wraps were really good, and lamb chops were really great. Everything else we ordered though, the fish, tofu, string beans, shrimp...were all very blah. The presentation of the dishes was great, but upon tasting, something about the food seemed off that I can't put my finger on. The waiter had recommended the shrimp dish to us but when we tried it none of us wanted to finish it. It just wasn't fresh. The tofu was a bit bland, and the fried fish didn't seem too fresh either. In the end I guess I'd give this place a 2.5. Nothing was bad, but there are just so many good Chinese restaurants (especially in Queens) that the food here just failed to stand out to me in any way, especially for the price. OMG! OMG! Grand Slam! I and fifteen other members of our dining group had an amazingly delicious dinner at Moonstone on Sunday, 10/11. Moonstone is a Chinese restaurant which is pretty non-traditional in many of its dishes.In addition to its Sushi and Sashimi offerings it puts a creative and more healthful modern spin on Chinese dishes, featuring very fresh vegetables which are less utilized in Chinese restaurants such as baby bok choy, which is abundantly provided in several entrees. The decor is very nice, tasteful and modern. The acoustics of the restaurant were great, facilitating conversation despite the restaurant being packed. Service was fast, accommodating and efficient. One entree order was mistaken but a correct entree was delivered relatively quickly. I really enjoyed the cocktails. Their Absolut Vodka Martini was well balanced. The Expresso Martini was "off the charts" excellent, better than many versions I have had in Italian restaurants. A minor complaint.....a group that brings in $800 dollars of business should at least get complimentary cups of tea. Dinner appetizers were bursting with flavor. The Lacquered Roast Pork was better than any of the versions I've had in Manhattan's Chinatown, which I know well from sampling this dish over the many years I have worked Downtown. The Berkshire Roast Pork Sliders were incredible in amazingly light buns.BBQ Spare Ribs were good, but the Roast Pork and the Sliders were better. I had the half Peking Duck. While I would have been much happier "rolling my own" the four pancakes prepared by the servers were loaded with duck meat that was not greasy and which contained the perfect amount of "fattiness".My Yong Chow Fried Rice was great, with a perfect amount of moistness and liberally filled with chicken,pork and shrimp. Other members loved the Lobster Cantonese, the Vegetarian Lettuce Wraps and the Wok Fried Sea Prawns. The Hot and Sour and Wonton soups, both very basic staple dishes, were made with care and were enjoyed by the group. As to desserts, stick with the Key Lime Pie as the Oreo Cheesecake was meh. It is worth noting that Moonstone features Western desserts, not just orange slices with fortune cookies. All in all, in terms of the number of dishes consistently enjoyed by our group, I would rate Moonstone as one of the handful of the best restaurants where our group has dined over the past year. Moonstone really impressed. I was more than pleasantly surprised. The wait staff was among the most attentive wait staff I have ever had. They were engaging and involved. They always made sure the table was clean and you had what you needed. The manager checked in several times to make sure we were ok. The restaurant is beautiful. It is clean and elegant. There is a bar, which I am informed does happy hour specials and fills up on some nights. The Kumamoto Oysters were great, as were the Salt and Pepper Calamari. The sushi was very good. The Two Hotties (spicy salmon, avocado, cucumber, topped with pan seared black pepper tuna, crunch, spicy mayo & wasabi mayo) was particularly good on the night I was there. Went to Moonstone a few times when it first opened! It's a great new addition to the area. We really did need a great sit down Chinese restaurant. Moonstone is more upscale and the decor is beautiful. They have a large menu with a wide variety of options. The best part is that they serve chinese/japanese cuisines. I love that I'm able to have sushi with my chinese food. The dim sum platter is awesome! It comes with a variety of different options and and it's a perfect starter to share with someone. I've tried the spicy tuna roll, which was pretty good. My favorite thing on the menu is the crispy beef. It's a crispy beef dish with an orange/citrus flavor. Really delicious! Moonstone is a bit pricey as it is a little bit more upscale for chinese/japanese cuisine, but it is well worth it! Definitely check out Moonstone whether it's for dining in or taking out. read more

Came here today to pick up lunch. Firstly the lunch special is a great deal. $10 for 2 rolls and choice of soup/salad/soda. My order was ready really quick (about 15 mins) Although i took to-go the interior of the restaurant is really beautiful. It's a very big space and it smelled delicious! The host / manager was very nice and pleasant. The rolls were good. I got pretty basic stuff (spicy tuna and yellowtail jalapeño). The rice to fish ratio was good (not too much rice). The rolls were nothing to rave about, but defiantly nothing bad about them. I'll have to try one of their special rolls next time. Also they have plenty of lunch special options for sushi and hot food. Looking forward to trying more. read more

Moonstone is more of a semi-upscale Chinese fusion restaurant. I didn't expect too much of it before entering, but we were greeted by the receptionist and quickly seated. They came with a bowl of fried wonton chips almost immediately as a free starter. It came with two sauces--duck sauce and a wasabi sauce. Boy, the wasabi sauce really kicked me in the nose. Service is great. The waiters helped open our set of chopsticks and refilled our cup of tea/water consistently. Oh. Teas are complimentary here! We ordered multiple dishes to share. The Baked Chicken Curry Puffs were warm, buttery, savory, and super soft and fluffy. They were much better than the ones you could get from Chinese bakeries. The Coconut Battered Chilean Sea Bass was tender and flaky on the inside, which was accompanied by a crunchy and crisp coco-nutty outside which was perfectly fried. The Two Hotties Sushi Roll was delicious. The two main ingredients were spicy salmon and pepper crusted tuna. The combination worked really well as the pepper added a different element of spice to the dish. The flakes of bread crumbs on top helped bring a crunchy element to tie everything together. The Peking Duck was awesome! It was served a little differently than the traditional way, in Mandarin Pancakes, which were similar to tortillas. Although different, the duck slices were more generous than most Chinese restaurants, and the meat was very tender and flavorful. It was served with the peking duck sauce and scallions inside the wrap. It also comes with two duck legs on the side, served with shrimp chips. For the Pan Seared French Rack of Lamb, we opted for the Merlot style so we could get some veggies in our dish. The rack of lambs, which were cooked perfectly to medium, was still very tender and juicy. The sauce was good, but a tad salty. Eating alternatively lamb with rice and bok choy helped to balance it out a bit. Then came the desserts! The Crispy Banana Spring Roll was really like described. It was extremely crispy, maybe even a bit crunchy, with a ripe and sweet banana in the center. On top of that, it was served along with lychee ice cream, which I believe is made in the house. It reminded me and my brother of those Chinese lychee jelly candies. It even had actual lychee jellies in it--pure reminiscence of childhood times. The Mango Pudding was one of the let downs of the meal. It tasted somewhat artificial--kind of like the mango puddings that you could make from the boxes in Chinese supermarkets. But ultimately, I would say Moonstone is a great restaurant and offers delicious food to the neighborhood and surrounding area (which is kind of barren). I also got a choice of appetizers or soup and I took wanton soup, also delicious. My friend ordered the chicken with nuts with brown rice and wonton soup. All great! Moonstone is outstanding. I will never step foot inside the likes of Elaine's or the Orient again. Everything from the service to the decor to the cocktails was a home run. This was my first time here and I will definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone I know. I love the menu here. If you're in the mood for some oysters, they have a raw bar as well. My fiancé and I ordered the chicken lettuce wrap and the lacquered roast pork to start. Omg! The pork was crispy and succulent. I couldn't stop eating it. It was amazing!!! For entrees, we ordered the crispy shrimp with honey glazed walnuts, chicken w/ broccoli and the beef chow fun. The mayo sauce on my crispy shrimp was outstanding. The prawns were huge and every dish was served hot. I had a throughly enjoying experience here. Great cocktails. Service was swift and attentive. Most restaurants of this ilk are terrible; particularly on Long Island. The restrooms were clean. I loved the lighting. Most places are either too dark or too bright. Garden City has not historically been a place to find good Chinese Food. We've been thru many of the local options but have never been very impressed. I decided to take a drive to the Queens/LI border to try Moonstone one day as it was the only menu nearby that I could find with all of the dishes the people I was with were craving. I was initially concerned that the prices seemed on the high side but the food made me forget about that. Everything was delicious and reasonably sized and with food from various styles of Chinese cooking the menu should have something for everyone. We've gone back at least 5 times since the initial visit and on the food front we've never been disappointed. We had one unfortunate incident where our pick-up order was given to someone else although they did give me something for free to make up for it and they also called to follow-up which I appreciated as it shows the business cares (I'm stunned how many businesses fail to do this - this is literally where you gain or lose loyalty). read more
