My first visit to Mothers Cantina. I was excited to try out the food after checking out menus, but they weren't dated and seemed maybe out of date. I was promptly greeted and seated even though it seemed quite busy. My server arrived quickly and took my drink order, and brought chips and salsa. The chips were hot and well salted and the salsa was good. I opted for the Birria Tacos listed as one of their premium tacos. The food came out quickly given how busy the place was. I think they were slightly overcooked. The tortillas seemed freshly made, and the au jus was delicious. The beef itself was okay, and there was less cheese than I expected. It was still a good dinner. As far as the restaurant itself, I was seated in the bar area, and overhead were old dished light/fan fixtures that looked pretty dirty. They might was to remove those as they just collect dust which eventually falls/drifts down. The air vents weren't looking very good either. These really kind of affect his the place could be perceived. I'll still leave 4 stars although I almost dropped to 3. There aren't half stars to give. A little attention to the facility might leave a better impression. read more

Came here on a Wednesday preseason in May. Arrived at 4pm, plenty of tables open but not empty. We were able to sit immediately. Service was fast and friendly. We had the nacho fries for appetizer coupled with the $5 house margarita for happy hour and white sangria. During this time of year ambience is much better as the restaurant is not as chaotic and noisy. I ordered the birria tacos and my wife got the fajitas. The birria was good but not great. The meat was really good, but the birria sauce was not as flavorful compared to other taco places I have tasted and wa not spicy. That being said I also did not ask it to be spicy because most places it is already spicy. Usually I would have shared my wife's fajitas too, but i was already stuffed from the fries and my tacos. We were visiting from NC. We placed our order and they had some internet issue and order was lost. The food arrived. The burrito was bland at best. Carne Asada was tough to eat. The rice was different than expected but that's traveling. It is a Spanish style rice with tomato in it. It was dry and not very much flavor. The pinto beans were fine. Chips were perfect and the queso was good. The salsa was straight Pace Picante salsa. If you're accustomed to your style of Mexican food, look elsewhere. The people were very nice and service was fine even with the lost order. The booths were small and the overall appearance looked old. It's probably and good place for margaritas and beer. Do not ever eat at this restaurant. We put in a to go order ahead for 15 people with five kids and they canceled it 10 minutes before it was supposed to be ready. We also spent over $400 on our to go order. The owner tried to explain to me that it was not his fault, and he blamed the third-party who we ordered through on his restaurant website. Then he promptly told me to leave his restaurant. I am not sure how he can run a restaurant with a disrespectful attitude like this. There is a reason why his second location failed within two years. 9/25/25 - Another night in Ocean City, MD and another Mexican meal. Tonight, we dined at Mother's Cantina right on the main drag. I was very optimistic as the parking area was very full each time we drove by and tonight was no different. The place seems to be popular with the locals as there was a lot of foot traffic observed while we ate our meals. The chips were warm and fresh and we upped the game by ordering a side of queso which was wonderful. The salsa was ok.... a bit too chunky but it had a delightful cilantro taste. It had zero heat. For the main course, I went with a Mother's burrito and chicken with the filling. The filling is made up of rice, peppers, onions, cheese, sauce and beans. The burrito was average but not terrible. It was a bit light on chicken but not so skimpy that it's an issue. My real issue here is the entire dish (burrito and side of rice) have a strong mesquite flavor. I like mesquite but I didnt particularly want the flavor in my burrito and rice. No where is mesquite mentioned on the menu so my first few bites were definitely a surprise. My wife ordered an inferno burrito. It looked exactly like mine and the only difference we could see is it had a bunch of jalapeño peppers in the stuffing. The wife let me sample it and much to my surprise, there was no heat at all. None. The meal was not quite what I expected but it wasn't a complete failure. It's not a place I'd run back to if I ever return here but it's nice place to grab a decent meal. Just don't expect to be wowwed or blown away with heat. Overall Rating: B- read more

I just wanted to leave a review for Mother's Cantina. The food here was wonderful. I had the Nachos. It's easy to mess this up with lack of cheese or something else. They were layered perfect with cheese and meat. We did have one of our people wait a while for their food. The place was really busy so we understood. We had a male waiter not sure of his name, but he was awesome. I would definitely recommend going here if you're in Ocean City Maryland. The food at Mother's Cantina is some of the very BEST we've ever had. The fajitas are my very favorite, so tasty but the Chili is the best chili we've ever had & we think our chili is the best until we had Mother's. We often beg for the secret ingredients but they are keeping it a secret for a good reason!!! We just tried the Triple Birria Tacos which are now our favorite, so delicious. I can't say enough about how good the food is there & we are real foodies & try everything. And, let's not forget the house margaritas which are always the most authentic & also huge. For several years we would always visit this location during our summer trips. Last year my husband got the chicken fajitas and it was very dry and difficult to chew. We sent it back and the replacement was a little better. We came back again this year and now the chicken fajitas are $25.96, you do not get any rice with it here (we travel quite a bit and it is standard at most places). My husband didn't get any lettuce, no pico, no cheese, and no sour cream. He asked for a small portion of rice instead and they said no. Which was fine. Then the food came out and he got one small chicken breast sliced on a huge bed of onions. Lots of onions. It was a very small portion, much smaller than previous years. So $26 for a very small boneless chicken breast. I got the single shrimp taco and it tasted good. Another odd thing, the straws are shorter than the cups. The straw goes down into the cup and you have to fish it out. Unfortunately we will not be returning. We will try some other spots in the area. read more

Came here for dinner tonight and it was rather pricey for what we received. The margarita was delicious. The tacos were good, but they were overpriced for what I got. $20 for three tacos? Nahh. My girlfriend ordered the steak fajitas. When she received them, they were overcooked and we had to send them back. Instead of serving them back on the skillet it came on, they gave us a few pieces of medium done steak on a plate with a couple peppers and onions. Girlfriend still said it was pretty tasteless and she left unsatisfied with her meal.. although I thought that my shrimp tacos were pretty good. For one margarita and an order of tacos my total came out to be a whopping $40. The restaurant was pretty nice. They had a couple tables, booths and bar seating as well as high tops. We came here for a later lunch during a weekend in Ocean City. Our friends raved about it and told us they always try to come here for dinner but it's packed. Luckily, during an off-season lunch, there was no wait and it was pretty empty. We wanted to sit in the bar area to watch a football game. The waitress let us choose wherever and even went to go change the channel so we could watch the tech game. She was super friendly, accommodating, and didn't make us feel like we were being annoying or asking too much. She was awesome. Our waiter was equally as amazing. He was quick and efficent. Also super friendly. We ordered a pitcher of margaritas, and our waiter also brought us out waters. The margarita was DELICIOUS. It wasn't too syrupy and really fresh. It was so good. It was the best margarita I've had in a while. My husband and I decided to split the 3 taco combo meal. We got a chicken taco, a chorizo taco, and a mushroom taco. The chicken taco was surprisingly our favorite. It was juicy and very flavorful. You didn't even need salsa or any sort of sauce. It was great on its own. The salsa that is complimentary is pretty spicy, I would have liked it a bit less spicy. The guacamole we got was just okay, it was a bit salty. The chips did not come out hot so definitely not homemade, just chips out of a bag it seems. The margaritas we got were just okay also, no fresh fruit used just flavors of the fruit. The steak and shrimp fajitas not bad. They give you 6 flour tortillas. Steak is cooked exactly how you want it which is great. Shrimp is cooked perfectly , not overcooked at all. There were onions under the surf and turf but only like 2 or 3 pieces of bell pepper, would have loved to see more bell pepper. The accoutrements it came with were fine, pico de gallo, shredded cheese, lettuce, and sour cream. I've never eaten at Mothers even though I passed it on coastal highway more times than I can count. Big mistake on my part. The atmosphere is great and the staff were attentive and courteous. Then there's the food, the salsa is thick with a decent amount of spice. I had the chicken chimichanga and my wife had the chicken fajitas. Both were very good and now we want to try everything. Place was slammed but they got us right in, waitresses came within 3 minutes of us sitting and took our drink order and appetizers. Like others posting on here, something has definitely changed. It's Mexican. It's not hard to do well nor should it be expensive. It starts with the chips and salsa. I suspect the salsa comes out of a 5 gallon Sysco tub. It's a mess of mushy tomatoes and has little or no taste. I found myself eating plain chips. I've consistently had better burritos at Chipotle. A burrito shouldn't be anywhere close to being $20 but it is at Mothers. The margaritas are very good but again: expensive. $17 for a standard top shelf or $30 for a large. (They are good though) If you want a drink this may be your juke joint. If you want food I'd go elsewhere. Tip: Skip the food and goto happy hour to get drunk. Thanks read more

My husband and I recently decided to give Mother's Cantina a try after reading so many good reviews. It was close by so off we went! My first impression was that it wasn't really clean- but I think it's just an older space with exposed ceiling and a bar right by the door. Very crowded feeling. We were seated and our waiter greeted us promptly. The food was ok - my husband had a crab quesadilla which he loved and I had tacos that were tasty but nothing to write home about. The tortillas were very good- apparently made on the premises. We weren't offered any chips so we ordered them with guacamole for 12$ which seemed kind of steep. This is an excellent Tex-Mex option in the OCMD area. Their main draw is that they make all of there tortillas and chips fresh on site! There was a little bit of a wait when we got there but it was worth it. We started with the complimentary homemade chips and salad, which were excellent. I then had the best chimichanga of my life and it was finally cooked the way it's supposed to be cooked (fried crispy)! I chose to fill it with their homemade chorizo (on recommendation of the waiter) and that was spectacular! I paired that with a margarita which was perfectly fine and served in a festive glass. Our waiter was friendly and the service was very quick, even during a busy period. I took off one star because the place is quite dark, sticky and even if it's not actually dirty, it looks and feels that way to me. We ALWAYS come to Mother's when we visit OC. They had a 2nd location that is now closed, but we like this spot better anyway. They are still making great tacos and margaritas from what we remember. We decided to try Mother's Cantina for dinner during our recent trip to Ocean City. The bright exterior decor caught our attention and we're glad we decided to check it out. We were quickly seated upon arrival. Our server came and took our drink and appetizer orders right away. We started with chips and salsa and added an order of the guac and queso. The chips were warm and perfectly salty. The salsa, queso and guac we're also really good. I was pleasantly surprised! The hit was my surf and turf fajita. It was EXCELLENT! The steak was cooked exactly to my liking and I could tell that the shrimp were fresh and also cooked and seasoned well. My pineapple jalapeño margarita was a perfect complement to a delicious meal! Heard great things about mothers and finally decided to try. I got a large margarita and let me tell you I fell in love with the literal CHALICE they give you. I wish I could've taken it home I got the steak fajitas and they were amazing. We also got the chicken nachos. They were so good too. The chicken is pulled.
