How happy am I that Moulin took over this perfect mini bakery location? Very. Husband and I love to visit the mall right when the shops open in order to avoid the rush crowd. However, we need a little latte break prior. Situated at the South Coast Plaza side of the Bear Street pedestrian walkway, is the mini version of its main location down the street, as a matter of fact, in Newport Beach. People don't know this but I am an almond croissant connoisseur. LOL. Any bakery I visit, there is no doubt that I will choose the croissant aux amandes. No other bakery can hold a candle to Moulin's almond croissant. It is packed with an almond filling that is fluffy and light with just the amount of flavor you need to pair with a latte (i love that it comes with a little piece of dark chocolate). Also, croissant is topped with all the sliced toasted almonds it can hold. Besides my husband, this is indeed my other true love. I love their outdoor cafe with all the lovely French bistro tables and weaved chairs. It's a slice of gay Paris right here in sunny California! What a way to get some fresh air *smile* Anyway, they have a good selection of pastries plus salads, baguettes and hot plates like quiche or croque monsieur. LOVE this place. The lemon tart, chocolate raspberry thing, and kings cake = wonderful. Service was good and quick. The whole cafe was clean and bright and the desserts all looked gorgeous. Definitely would come back. Very happy to have a nice French bakery in Orange County. The galette de rois is beautiful. It was my first time having one, and I had only seen pictures and I had thought it was almond cream, but here it's moist almond cake inside a flaky croissant-like case. The cake and croissant themselves are delicious, but I would recommend a vanilla bean sauce or cream to eat with it because it was a relatively dry combination for what my uncultured self is used to (sponge cake slathered in buttercream). Came here mainly for pastries after always seeing a crowd here when walking between the two sides of South Coast Plaza. If there is a line, expect it to move somewhat slowly because they have one cashier and often times, the people here don't seem to know what they want by the time they reach the front. I ended up trying their coffee eclair and the yuzu lychee cake. Coffee Eclair 2.5/5: Tasted a bit old. The pastry shell was not the best, and a bit thin. The coffee filling had a decent coffee flavor, but could've been better. Yuzu Lychee Cake 4.5/5: I would come back for this one. The flavor of yuzu dominated the lychee flavor, but it was a nice citrusy cake. As tasty and it was pretty. As for ambiance, it has a good amount of seating and the outdoor setting is very pleasant. This location is pretty unique in that it's on the outside of the mall so you don't get "mall vibe" at all. I only with there were more drink options. It's a small location so they don't have too much but coffee isn't always a go-to for me, love teas, refreshers, etc. most of the time. Considering that this is a high-end Bistro, to eat a pastry, in freezing cold weather in the morning is not only disrespectful and non-productive on the manager's part, but also cheap and low-class for any business in Costa Mesa. 2. They did away with cozy small tables inside. Very bad decision on management's part, now you are obligated to sit on bar stools by yourself looking out the window, how sad. I wonder if the owner is aware of these most inconvenient changes for long patrons. Be aware, bring blankets, gloves coats, and beanies, to keep warm outside in the freezing cold. I've been here a few times, but really only to grab some coffee and pastries while on break from wandering around South Coast. Service has always been relatively friendly, but nothing spectacular and the pastries (or fruit tart when I feel like it) seems a bit small in the smaller side in terms of what I paid. I've been here a couple of times and I love the ambience. It reminds me of the cafes in Paris with seating on the sidewalk so you can people watch. The quiche is amazing. It takes a while for them to heat it up and bring it out to you, but the wait is worth it. I've never had a quiche this good. It's crispy on top, the pastry shell tastes homemade, and the filling is creamy and delicious! The salad that accompanies it is light and refreshing. It's dressed with just oil, vinegar, salt, and pepper. Just how most Parisian places make it. The Baba au Rhum is a small sweet glazed cake filled with cream and has a pipette of rum to squeeze into it. You can even just squeeze the rum into your mouth instead. I did half and half. Half of the rum into the cake, half down the hatch! Their drink selection is great. Nothing like getting real champagne to drink in the warm SoCal sunshine. Laurent Perrier is a legit good champagne from Champagne. It has lively acidity & bubbles, freshness, with hints of tangerine and lemon. Cremant d'Alsace is the same recipe as champagne, but from the Alsace region of France. It is a bit sweeter than normal brut champagne. But it pairs nicely with the desserts. I have visited this restaurant at the Bristol location and wrote a positive Yelp review for that location. This is not that. Shopping with my daughter we saw a mini location and the bottom the walking bridge between south coast and Crystal court and decided to stop for food since we love the brand. Terrible service here. We ordered one hot sandwich to share and since they don't do wine by the glass order a half bottle i had no intention of finishing. I paid my almost $40 and received a number to sit with. After 30 minutes of waiting I walked to the front to check on my order. I told her the order number I was waiting on (number was still sitting on my table). One person told me they already delivered the sand which and someone else indicated the system wasn't working? Either way I was required to produce my receipt to prove I had an order I was waiting on at which time they indicated they would start on it. They took my receipt to the back and I had to ask for it to be returned when they asked to me to be seated again. All in I placed my order at 3:07 received my sandwich at 3:50 with no apology, offer for refund or any amends (server actually seemed annoyed with me when I asked for a fork for my side salad. The people sitting next to us left in an angry way without receiving their food at all. To make matters worse a woman sitting two tables away was conducting face time calls on speaker and nobody was willing to let her know this was inappropriate. Terrible way to spend the afternoon. Not all their Pastries were labeled, and ask what type of ingredients in one of their patries. Regularly go to location in Newport Beach. I would get their famous quiche, always good eggs fluffy and moist. Went to South Coast Plaza location today ordered quiche, it was terrible. Not sure how it can change so drastically. It was very DRY, bland, no cheese in it or if there was it was dried up! I was on lunch so no time to go back after waiting for it for 30 min. This review is mainly to recognize Amelia for their excellent customer service who did everything and anything to make their customers happy. For anyone wondering, they have power outlets to the right of the cafe near the trash. I started with the burrata salad - it's expensive but the burrata is excellent. My mom and aunt loved the ham sandwich, and always love their coffee. We tried The Plaza, which is specially made for this location, made with Italian meringue, earl grey chantilly, figs compote, and vanilla sucree. The most excellent combination of flavors. The fundamental issue which makes it worse is sharing with 2 restrooms within same shack so restroom smell is over-powered the and I don't want my food gets contaminated by someone number 1 and 2 with it. That is a bad location for a food vendor.
