Mouthful Eatery is a restaurant that I always have to visit when I'm driving through Thousand Oaks. I've only been for lunch pre-COVID and I can say that these are some of the most unique and tasty sandwiches that I've had! Most of the sandwiches have a Peruvian influence. I've tried the Crispy Pork, Pork Shoulder, Lomo Saltado (Skirt Steak), and Albondigo (Turkey Meatballs). It's hard to choose a favorite, but I'd say either the Crispy Pork or the Lomo Saltado. The sandwiches are pretty sizable and worth the price. Haven't tried any of the salads or sides, but I've been eyeing the Crispy Yucca for my next visit. read more

My husband usually gets the steak sandwich but honestly, it's hard to go wrong. There's plenty of inside seating plus a few tables in front along TO Blvd and some picnic tables with shade in back. This is probably my favorite Peruvian place in Ventura County, though it is more American-Peruvian fusion. Their lomo saltado sandwhich is pretty authentic and really delicious. I'm also a fan of their yucca fries. I came in on a Thursday and was pleased to find out that they have live latin music every Thursday! There were lots of people there to enjoy the food and music. I usually don't really post unless I'm going to give someplace a rave review, as I don't like to hurt businesses with negative reviews, but they have enough 5 star reviews to dilute my lukewarm post here. We even watched some youtube videos of the chef who runs the place, and we were so excited to go, especially because they advertise as being one of the "top 100" restaurants on yelp in the country. So. Good. Clean and cool little hole in the wall. The decor is vibrant and fun. My partner and I dipped in here for some tasty lunch and it did not disappoint. Tried the Lomo Saltado (bc obviously) and it was so flavorful. The meat was tender and the fries were just firm enough to hold their shape, without being to tough or getting soggy. And the flavor. We also tried their sweet potato fries and green beans, which were both outstanding. This review is for food only. I recently picked up two dishes: pork chop and Lomo Saltado. First the pork chop - the meat is tough as shoe leather and was fully cooked. I would prefer a medium well, but that is not the point. Quality of meat was mediocre and the taste did not balance well. It was a bit sweet with almost cinnamon like twist that didn't jive. The presentation was great and it looked very mouth watering. But soon the disappointment ensued. Second, Lomo saltado. I think they were using a skirt steak which is not a cheap meat. However, it was overcooked and tough. Tip to the cook, try using a little bit of baking soda to tenderize the meat. Sauce was good and the potatoes were near perfect. Nonetheless, the meat, which is the main point of the dish was very disappointing. Also, the rice was so hard it bounced off of my dinner table. I hope you review your meat preparation amd hope you find this helpful. I will try you once more in a few months and hope to give you a 5 star review. read more

SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST SALAD 4/5: Not bad at all if you're looking for a refreshing salad. Everything was incredibly fresh, hearty, plentiful and the jalapeño ranch and slices of fresh avocado made it all the better. The chicken was okay, nothing terrible, maybe I'd prefer it more tender. ZUCCHINI STICKS 4/5: These were a delicious idea. I ordered a small side of them and still couldn't finish it. Thinly cut and perfectly fried with a thick ranch (?) on the side. I eat here every few months. The service is always friendly and welcoming . I alway get the Pollo Saldito plate. The chicken and ingredients are always fresh and tasty. The Peruvian offered the specialty of lomo saltado which is our go to when we dine with this cuisine. I tried the chicken and N tried the steak. Both were great cuts of meat, moist not dry and flavorful. They offer the ability to do bowls or sandwiches on all their meal items. I did the bowl with quinoa and N had rice. I love that they had a healthier alternative for my carb! I noticed they also had a cute kids menu with options available. Pricing was reasonable between $12-15 for most entrees. I discovered this little gem recently, and since have probably been there half a dozen times, mostly for lunch but last week, my wife and I stopped in and had dinner, and it was excellent, she had the salmon. I had the short ribs with mashed potatoes, I normally get the Carnitas sandwich on ciabatta bread and it's always delicious, I guess my only issue would be. I'm not a fan of these tiny french fries only because they seem to be little bits instead of long french fries they're like broken off pieces instead of whole fries, however it's never stopped me from eating them, the service and the staff are exceptional and attentive and always friendly, it has become my go to place for lunch, the interior is colorful and welcoming, I love everything about this place, being a culinary professional of 35 years I was thrilled to read about the owner/Chef and being a fan of the band rush, I like that they had a little sign that mentioned them as well as a great painting of one of my favorite chefs Anthony Bourdain. This is probably the best casual dining establishment in the entire are. It's Peruvian and Peruvian-inspired modern cuisine. Best pulled pork sandwich I've ever had, anywhere. The bread is perfect and they put the perfect amount of aioli sauce on it. Sweet potato fries can be hit or miss, this place it's always a hit. Perfect service and very fast. Delightful atmosphere. Great place! Friendly service and good food. I ordered the chop chop salad! Really good and well balanced with unique flavors. The farmers cheese was really fresh and good. Four stars because when I ordering in mid conversation, without letting me know, she took a to-go order on the phone and I waited a couple minutes confused. It was fine she did that but it would have been polite to either finish with me and put the phone on hold or let me know it would be a minute. Also the salad had WAY too much arugula. A wasteful amount. I ate my salad, all the fillings and at the end had about an entire cup of plain arugula left over. Date night with the hubby went excellent. We had no kids, I was able to choose where to eat within 10 minutes instead of 3 hours like it usually takes me and this restaurant was the perfect choice. The service was top notch and the food was above and beyond delicious. We hadn't visited in a while since COVID had the dining in shut down for a while but we were able to dine in last night. We had the small fried yucca for appetizer and it was soooo good especially the yellow sauce that came with it. My husband loved the pork chops and it came with sweet potatoes and kale and the pomegranate su jus sauce just made it taste even better. I got the famous Peruvian lomo saltado and you have options of getting it in a sandwich, bowl, or dinner plate and I chose the dinner plate. It was great and a big portion too and it came with some spicy sauce on the side which complemented the meat well. Alfajores are a must little desert that ended our meal perfectly with the soft caramel filled cookie with powdered sugar on top. The cashier checked on us several times and the guy who delivered our food as well and it was such a great ambience and very clean and we will be back soon. read more

Good food and vegetarian/vegan friendly! Before anyone says "but it's only a veggie sandwich and salads..." you can order the veggie sandwich and add tofu. And/or cheese or avocado. It's an extra charge but the veggie sandwich is already substantially cheaper than everything else. This place isn't super cheap for a casual sandwich shop but not expensive either. They also use better quality ingredients than most sandwich places. So it's more than meets the eye so to speak. Plus, their staff is always helpful and friendly. Their habanero sauce is amazing!
