Came here for the egg custard tarts and they were exactly what I was looking for. They have a normal style and a Portuguese style ranging between $2.50-$2.80, I believe. Service is quick in this no-frills, classic Chinese style bakery. They also had an assortment of cakes and other pastries. CASH ONLY is the only downside to this spot. I hardly carry cash anywhere nowadays.

Popped in this morning and bought 1/2 dozen traditional custard egg tarts. $2.50 each. The Portuguese ones are $2.95 each The bakery will be on vacation starting 2/17/26. Reopening 2/25. #8 on my eat local 'hood list 2026.

I highly recommend anyone coming to SF, to visit this bakery! Paid street parking there are meters around the block. There is usually a line, but it moves quickly. My favorites are + original egg tarts (The egg tarts are incredible!) + Portuguese egg tarts + pineapple bread (bo lo) + baked char siu bun + taro bun

Mr. Bread was beloved on Yelp in 2025. Cash Only.

Mr. Bread is known for its Portuguese Egg Custard Tarts and Egg Custard Tarts. So delightfully yummy! I reheated them at home at 350-370 degrees for 10 minutes. As of 12/8/25, it was $2.30 for a regular Custard Tart and $2.60 for a Portuguese Custard Tart. I think the Portuguese tarts did taste a little better. Go early enough so they don't sell out. I went 12:15 PM on a Monday and had no trouble. After we entered, a line formed behind us. However, after eating lunch in the area, there wasn't a line after 1 PM. CASH ONLY. Closed on Tuesdays. Bakery is a Chinese dive. Narrow customer area barely wide enough to form a single line. Walls are covered in paper ads, menus, and pictures. I was too panicked and crowded to take pictures, focused on paying and getting out. Besides custard tarts, there are other Chinese pastries. You can also order a cake here. Mr. Bread is located on Taraval St near 19th Ave or Highway 1. You need to find street parking. Buy a lot of custard tarts! They are comforting and addictive.

The first day of December and it was a sunny day so I went on a Holiday stroll in the Sunset Strip of San Francisco also known as the Sunset District. San Francisco is one of the best places to get a dessert. I am in search of a tart which has its origins in Portugal but has spread to countries like Brazil and China. These egg tarts are also known to be from Hong Kong and Macau and part of Cantonese cuisine. The search for the best Portuguese egg tarts and Pastel De Nata has me going to Taraval street .The Sunset has lots of places which serves and egg tarts such as Pineapple King and Sunset Bakery. One place which has one of the best in San Francisco for Portuguese tarts is Mr. Bread. This spot also serves lots of pastries such as egg tarts and buns . Although I am of Portuguese heritage and the Portuguese tarts was on my mind I had to try their buns. I like all types of buns but the curry beef buns were the best I had in San Francisco. It was savory and the buns were soft. So delicious. I then had the Portuguese tarts and I would say it's my personal favorite. It was not too sweet and it was fresh and velvety. It was smooth and tasty. It wasn't flakey like most of them in SF. This place is also the go to place to get customize cakes. They are closed on Tuesday and it's cash only . I now only wonder where is Mrs.Bread ? They have the Cream, Curry Beef, Pineapple, Taro , Tuna "Bun " and other pastries which are well "done" and the Portuguese egg tart is my favorite "one " in San Francisco as I enjoy the First day of December on Cyber Monday at the Sunset strip under the "sun" "Mr. Bread "has a good bakery "spread "go here you won't be "misled "when it comes to Portuguese tart the taste is miles "ahead "I feel fortunate to live in San Francisco the place I was Born and "bred "

I've heard good things about this place so decided to stop in to try it out. Egg custard tart: the crust was thin, yet buttery and flaky, however, the custard was not as smooth as other places. Pineapple bun: decent, but I've had better. Wife cake: flaky crust with a good amount of filling Overall, it was good, but I still prefer the bakeries in SF Chinatown in terms of taste and price. That said, this location is much more accessible, especially when it comes to parking. Friendly service. Cash only.

4 Portuguese custard tarts and 2 eggs custard tarts

Mr. Bread for the win! At $2.8 for the Portuguese custard tarts and $2.30 for the egg custard tarts they are perfectly sized treats. You can be satisfied with 1 (or 4..and they are not bite sized.. they're a few bites bigger). To be safe and because I didnt want to share.... I got 6...The 2 of us inhaled them all on the 20 minute drive home. Also they were piping hot..so obviously had to be eaten immediately. So doesn't like these fresh out of the oven.

Cash only. They are known for the Portuguese egg tarts, but I actually really loved their ham and egg buns. I like how the bread is soft and sweet, and the ham/egg is salty. It makes a good combo. You can buy them à la carte, but remember to bring cash. The line can get long, but I think it moves fairly quickly. Great Chinese bakery in the sunset. (I tried the Portuguese egg tarts years ago, so I can't remember how good they were.)

    Vincent W.

Small mom and pop Cantonese Chinese bakery in the Sunset that reminds you of the early 80's/90's 25c cocktail buns and pineapple buns. I normally get a couple of each, The prices are prices are now at the 2025 rate but the taste is really good still. This place has no seating so it's just a takeout spot. They also have a small fridge with pictures of cakes but I have never tried one. They also make both po tat ( Portuguese custard tarts) and dan tat ( regular custard tarts) . Both are good but I prefer the classic dan tat just because the skin is a little more fluffy and less crispy and the custard is more moist. People order half or dozens of both so you can't go wrong. On the weekends there is usually a line and if you go during the peak time you might have to wait for fresh tarts. They will tell you to come back in 15-20 mins if they are out but will save them for you if you prepay. Cash only spot so bring those dollar bills ( a $20 probably) since you'll get a variety of items here. TLDR; All items are pretty good here. Small lines are expected on weekends and possibly waits for tarts if you going during a peak time.

Coconut custard pastry. Despite the name, no custard. Moist, fresh, and the perfect amount of coconut! $2.50.

Near-perfection in a tart. What more is there to say? Sure, they have a small selection of other pastries, but the star of the show (by a highway mile) is the Portuguese Custard Tart--a masterclass in taking a basic concept & executing flawlessly on the fundamentals. The perfect amount of flakiness in the crust, the right amount of buttery without being oily or overly greasy, fresh custard, served warm(!). My mouth is watering just thinking about it. And a steal at $2.80 per tart (cash only). Bring lots of cash from the ATM. Exercise restraint. You'll want to keep coming back for more.

I was in the mood for some buns, so I stopped by Mr. Bread. There was a short line when I went but it went by quickly. This is a great spot to pick up a box of baked goods. Everything is reasonably priced and yummy. I got a few pineapple buns, barbeque pork buns, egg tarts, Portuguese egg tarts, and ham & egg bun. They are cash only!

    Taro Buns!!
    Linda H.

Everyone talks about their Portuguese tarts which yes are good and basically all their egg tarts sell out quick. Their baos, dare I say, are equally just as good. Their pineapple buns are so good. The pork buns are full of meat and so satisfying. Lastly, the taro buns, for a taro Queen is pretty up there. Tons of taro inside. Don't sleep on Mr Bread Baos. They're def fire!

Was walking through Taraval to look for something to drink, and stumbled upon this small mom and pop bakery. I've walked passed this place many times and always wondered how small businesses like this have lasted for so long, until today. I was definitely able to grab a water bottle, but also thought why not try one of their pastries. There I saw some fresh baked Portuguese Egg Tarts and thought I definitely had to try one! It was warm, jiggly like a souffle, and so smoooth with every bite! I made the mistake of only buying one, but if you're looking for a damn good egg tart, this is the place! Make sure to bring cash because it's cash only!

Is Mr bread open now , May 17?

As of 3/18/2020, can anyone confirm that Mr. Bread is open during SF's shelter in place order?

I was disappointed to find that the business is currently closed from April 1st to April 30th. There is a sign on the door.

The line was only formed because the bakery is relatively small and doesn't have a lot of wiggle room so they only let in one party at a time. There aren't any sit-down tables or chairs so this is a grab and enjoy somewhere else. Pastry: Kouign-amann (8.4/10): Oh this was yummy. I love a good kouign amann and Arsicault satisfied my sweet tooth. It was a little too sweet but had a good outer layer crunch and fluffy interior. Chocolate Almond Croissant (7.8/10): This one was amazing! I will say that this one is definitely on the sweeter side but it was still delicious. It's a pretty big croissant with a good crunch but not a lot of flaking :( I did really enjoy the almond paste that was smothered on the inside. I went around 12:15pm on a Saturday, and the line was short (comparatively) and moved quickly! Pro tip: keep up with their instagram stories because they occasionally post live updates about the line/supply! It only took around 15 minutes to reach the front. Another tip: decide what you're going to get & some back up options (in case they sell out of your first choice options) so you don't hold up the line deciding at the cashier! I think that is the main reason the line sometimes moves slow. Because tbh once you put in your order, it takes like 3 minutes for them to pack it up. I tried 3 pastries from the July menu: Skirt Steak Croissant, Madame Lorraine, and Peach & Sweet Corn Cruffin. I also wanted to try the Bruschetta Danish, but they were sold out of that one. I was definitely most excited about the Skirt Steak from the beginning, and it was indeed my favorite! The croissant was so flakey buttery crispy, it was actually perfection. I love the chipotle aioli and arugula pesto sauces. Wow one of the best pastries I've ever eaten. The madame lorraine was my second favorite. I'm biased though because I love salty a lot more than sweet. The pork was so tasty in this one, and I really liked the parmesan toppings. I don't even like runny egg yolks, but it worked so well with this pastry. The peach & sweet corn cruffin was a little too sweet for me but the peach and corn flavors worked sooo surprisingly well. I NEED to come back to try their other pastries wow. It is 100% worth the hype.

The Peach Corn Cruffin was even more disappointing, it was more like apple than peach, the fruit was still crisp and undercooked. Crisp peach? And the cream had a sour note that threw the whole pastry off. The Bruschetta Danish was the standout of the box. The Plum Vanilla Almond Twice-Baked Croissant oddly reminded me more of a PB&J than an almond-plum pastry. The pastries definitely photograph better than they eat. I really wanted to love this place, but I don't think the hype matches the experience. Are there good pastries here? Probably... um, sure. (?) But are those worth the wait and the reputation? Not in my opinion. Sometimes the emperor really has no clothes.

I've always wanted to try this place since I see a line every time I walked by. There's a lot of foot and car traffic. It's definitely a busy area so expect to park in one of the nearby residential areas or be extremely and walk/bike/bus here! Upon stepping into the tiny shop, I was enveloped in the sweet smell of chocolate chip cookies. It was tempting to put that in my bag, but I stuck with my game plan. They do self serve for all the baked goods and drinks except the pizza and focaccia. You tell the cashier what you grabbed. There's self serve complimentary water on the side too. Got a pecan swirl, one of each square focaccia flavors, and a half pizza (hot). The pizza flavor of the day was triple mushroom with sesame ginger garlic vinaigrette and mozzarella. It was 10/10 delicious!! Do note that they don't heat up the focaccia. Personally, after tasting everything, I'd say the pizza is more worth it than the focaccia "pizzas". The pecan roll was quite addicting too. You can also skip the line if you want to order online on their website and schedule a pick up time, but my gift card didn't work so I just waited in line.
