The beef is braised very thoroughly and soaks up the broth really well. The broth is very flavorful and on the oily side. The cabbage and wood ear mushroom are nice compliments to the beef. The side dishes are good to have but slightly pricey imo so they're not necessary. In addition, they have the Scihuan green pepper oil on the table. Tried this place with my friend, they had a white board outside with specials for the week. I tried osmanthus rice drink, it's pretty good, not too sweet. My friend got a mung bean drink, she enjoyed it also. We also tried the marinated tofu, so good but the portion is so small. $5 for a couple slices of tofu, tofu is not an expensive item for them to be so stingy with the portions. I'm a huge fan of this place. My friend and I decided to try it out about a month ago and have been back 3+ times since then. I always order the A6 double chili fatty beef mixian. It's the perfect amount of spice without being too overpowering. They are very generous with their portion sizes and give ample amount of meat in their bowls. The interior is quite small and it can get packed during prime dinner time. Service is very efficient! There are utensils and water at a small table near the register so you can get everything you need yourself. I've been here multiple times, and I'll always come back. Spicy Beef Dry Mixian ($13) - This is my favorite dish on the menu, and is one of the few rice noodle dishes that don't have broth. Everything about this is perfect. The rice noodles, the sauce, the beef- it's all amazing. The noodles are cooked perfectly every single time I order and the beef is always delicious. I feel like this is a hidden gem inside of a hidden gem. I honestly have no negative views on this dish and it's such a staple for me. In addition, the portion size will 100% keep you full. My friend also recommended the Beef Sirloin Rice dish, but I haven't tried it yet. So, if you want to try a rice dish and not noodles, I'll recommend that. They also give unlimited refills on white rice if you run out while eating the beef. The staff is also super friendly and I've never had complaints. One of the easiest 5 stars. The hot pot was just okay for me: there's a good amount of beef, but there is way too much cabbage for me and not enough variety of other things. If you're looking for hot pot at the same price point, walk a few steps more to Northern Chinese and get the similar Beef Hot Pot. The Taiwanese Sausage was also just average. Over $3 for one small roll of sausage is very overpriced. Maybe I got the wrong thing though? The service was good. My friend and I both ordered the Spicy Beef Pot but were told they were out of beef so one of us switched to the lamb hot pot instead. Hot pots and Yun Nan mixian noodles are the featured items here, with Peanut and "Nemo" available as a side. The old Falafel King has been given a much-needed makeover, giving the space a much brighter and open feel. The actual cooking area is out front in an open kitchen, behind the counter where you place your order. Although the name is Mr. Rice, Yunnan rice noodles (mixian) are the largest menu category. Since I can't handle spicy, I ordered the Special Yunnan Mixian.I have never heard of Yunnan noodles before, and after trying them, I can see why. The noodles are bland and unremarkable, lacking any sort of bite. As for toppings, it almost seemed like I got the remaining bits of a previous serving - some pork crumbles, a few pieces of bok choy, a couple of tofu skins, bits of tomato and a pinch of pickled vegetables. The quail egg was the only thing that reassured me that it wasn't just leftovers. On a positive note, the noodle portion was HUGE, though it needed more stuff to make it more flavorful. The fresh veggies hot pot made for a bigger impact, especially since my husband ordered it medium spicy. It was filled with nappa cabbage, bok choy, assorted mushrooms (wood ear, enoki and white), tofu, tofu skin, a piece corn on the cob and yet another quail egg, with a side of rice. (Note: the broth is not vegetarian.) Even though Westwood was pretty deserted during the winter break, Mr. Rice still managed to attract a steady stream of customers. By the time we finished, every table had been filled, with people waiting for a spot to sit. Judging by the other tables, I think I probably ordered the wrong dish, as the noodles that I saw looked a lot more appetizing than mine. The hot pots were also quite popular. However, if you come by alone or if there's not much seating, you can sit at the bar stools at the windows and people watch while you eat. You don't need to go up to ask for a to-go box. It costs $13.99 and comes with a small bowl of rice. The price is quite cheap for a hot pot and when the dish came out, I initially thought that it was a pretty decent portion. But then I ate. First time trying food from Yunan province and it was pretty darn tasty! I had never heard of "Mixian" before, so even though I read Mandarin I had to ask the cashier what it was. "Mixian" direct translation is "rice string", and it is a round rice noodle similar to the shape of spaghetti. My friend and I ordered the Signature Beef Sirloin with Rice, Grandma's Dry Mixian, and a White Peach Oolong. The Signature Beef Sirloin is a bowl of tender, slow-cooked meat in a spicy broth - similar to a stew. There's a sweetness to the broth, so it's not super spicy for those who may balk at the redness. Very hardy dish, great for a cold day. Grandma's Dry Mixian comes with a large mound of freshly cooked, chewy mixian topped with a meat sauce and mixed veggies. I really loved how the noodles retained their elasticity and did not get soggy. Portions are generous, so be prepared to feast! (Or take some home) read more
