And for all the dishes under "meat sauce rice", we can refill the rice unlimitedly. For the double chili fatty beef mixian, it is good as too. There's a lot of beef slices, and some vegetables. Woot, more Chinese food in Westwood. I got the veggie hotpot on a v e r y cold night, and it went straight to the soul and warmed me up. The portion size was also ginormous for the price (and the noodle bowls looked even bigger), and the soup was filled with all the Chinese-style veggie/mushroom goods (more wood ear mushroom, please!) and even some quail eggs and other fun surprises. It was also served with a bowl of rice but I was full just with the soup. My only complaint is with the space itself. The entrance is v v crowded (the door opens into the line and you're also at risk of hitting a bunch of diners at the same time??)- I understand that they're working with limited space but maybe move that one table by the door a little further away? Mr. Rice is small, neat store that seems to be overshadowed by the other larger Asian cuisines on the same block such as northern cafe (where we were supposed to go but the wait line was too long). However, as we all know, size does not matter. They have a very nice catchy design going on outdoors which also happens to be the reason why I decided to check it out. Upon entering, the size of the store front correlates with the size of the restaurant indoors. Not many seating. However, like I said before, size does not matter. Mr. Rice has taken the Kiosk approach to ordering your food to eliminate the need for multiple waiters/waitresses running around which would make it hectic/chaotic in a small restaurant like Mr. Rice. The one waitress there is perfectly capable of monitoring all customers. Kind of like an small, efficient McDonalds if they didn't serve fast food and served Chinese food instead. As for my meal, I had the Double Chili Fatty Beef noodle. Portions were great and reflect the price. Although a little spicy for my liking. The flavors are strong and mix very well with everything else in the broth. The variety of vegetables, beef, and eggs were excellent. The noodles were a bit over cooked and soft. Other than that small issue, I had absolutely no complains whatsoever, and the meal was so good that I had to get another to go. Incredible! I stumbled upon this restaurant walking through the area with a colleague and it was such an unexpectedly wonderful surprise. It's a small space that seems to concentrate all of its efforts on making some of the best Chinese food I've ever had. I ordered the spicy beef hot pot and it exceeded any expectation I could've had. The wealth of flavors in one bowl was impressive and deeply satisfying. The staff was also very helpful and I appreciated their recommendations, as it was our first visit. Lan, our server was so sweet and incredibly kind to us. The service was great, the food was so good and I know I will be back here when I'm in the area again. Rating this place is on two scales: First is the "this is west LA" scale: where good Chinese food is almost non-existent, what little there is is overpriced, and even the best is still a downgrade from the originals-- although lately it has gotten better. In that context, Mr. Rice is pretty good, quick, good sized portions, and the spices and noodles are... not competitive in 626, but close enough to be good. Second is the "is this good Chinese food" scale: as alluded to so far... it's okay. Flavors would be a mediocre to fair place in 626, not quite average... but it's authentic enough to fly where it is. Last night, I dreamt of the Mr. Rice Yunnan Tofu Dry Noodle Mixian. I dove into a pool, but suddenly all of the water was replaced by noodles. I was completely submerged, floundering around in the sauce and soon realizing that the only way out was to eat my way through. I was in heaven. This is the type of dish that I could eat every day and never get sick of. The noodles are some of the freshest and softest I have every eaten, and I would describe them as a combination of ramen and udon noodles--based on diameter and consistency. The soft tofu consummately complements the spicy minced beef and delicious sauce, with spicy chili oil adding a perfect kick to each bite. Dry noodle mixians are a great dish to order if you want something similar to ramen, but without the broth--allowing for a deeper appreciation of the flavor notes due to the lack of dilution. Not only does Mr. Rice excel in producing excellent, delectable dishes, they are also extremely fast and I don't think I've waited longer than 10 minutes for either takeout or dine-in service. The staff are such kind-hearted people; I recall one time that I visited and my card was not working, so the woman at the register said it was on the house and I could pay next time. The trust she placed in me when she could have EASILY kicked me to the curb warmed my heart, reminiscent of the Grinch experiencing a tenfold increase in his heart at the Whoville camaraderie. Of course, I returned later that day and paid and tipped excessively, eternally grateful for this random act of kindness. read more

As far as west LA goes, Mr. Rice has decent Chinese food. It might have just been the newness but I was super excited to eat here. They have a selection of rice noodles, hot pot (not the type you cook yourself but the type that is premixed and precooked), and braised/stewed dishes. Individual dishes are around the $10 mark and you can get a combo (which includes a main dish, a side, and a speciality drink) for ~$16. I tried the Special Yunan Mixian ("mixian" is the Chinese word for rice noodles), the Braised Chicken with Rice, the Marinated Sliced Lotus Root (it's a cold side dish), and the White Peach Oolong Tea. Aside from the Oolong tea, which I found quite off putting (it had a strong roasted flavor that was weirdly artificial + fake peach), every dish was good, but not amazing, and I will definitely try other dishes next time. The braised chicken came with a lot of chicken. It was tender and but the flavor was quite basic. I thought the "special" mixian would be like the classic crossing bridge kind with chicken and pork slices but it came with ground beef instead. It also has deep fried peas (which were unfortunately firm/dense instead of crispy), pickled beans (good!), tofu skin, woodear mushrooms, and a quail egg in a savoury, non-spicy broth. Definitely agree with others calling this place a hidden gem in Westwood. My Chinese friend showed me this place one night after studying and I was really impressed. The Yunnan mixian, tomato beef rice noodle, and kimchi beef mixian are all really good -- the kimchi they use is great as well, nice and sour. I also got the hot pot once and that was really good and spicy too. The staff here are also really kind and sweet, especially Aileen -- always nice to see her there, and she even gave me a marinated egg to try with my mixian today, which I definitely recommend. Swung by a Thursday evening and place was pretty busy with people who seemed to be familiar with Yunnan flavors. We ordered the Yunnan tofu noodles (fyi there is meat in this even tho it is not mentioned anywhere or by the server) and the beef hot pot (fyi spicy level is very spicy to the point where it's not going to be enjoyable for most; server gave an odd lot but when I asked if I should change my mind in case it's not good to eat, was told I'll see). Even when I asked him to help me get a pair of chopsticks, he scolded me with a bad attitude and told me to get them myself. Despite the fact that there was no one else in the store, he wouldn't let me sit in the sofa seat, claiming it would increase the distance for his food delivery.
