This joint is right next to all the tourist hotels, so it gets a fair share of thirty-somethings with tucked in shirts, but the food is decent. Mind you, decent. This place was recommended to us by our concierge. We told him that we just had an awesome meal at Mothers (which was the best meal we had in NOLA btw) so you'd think that he would take that as a cue that we didn't want touristy stuff. We walked into Mulates around 2pm and the place was nearly deserted, which is understandable because its an odd time to eat. After looking at the outrageous prices we were thinking "Well, it's got to be good then, right?" Wrong. My plate was missing an item and the vegetables were cold. I ordered the stuffed shrimp and it looked like little (way past golden) brown footballs. My husband got the fried crawfish and etoufee which wasn't horrible if you like chewy fried food. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't good. I thought we could have gotten way better food across the street at the Riverfront Mall food court for a fraction of the price. I don't get to New Orleans often but I've gone a few times on business and this is a place that I will go out of my way to eat at. The atmosphere was great. The live music and dancing was awesome. The locals that came there to dance would invite you up on the dance floor and teach you the local dances. It was a blast. For an appetizer we got the plate that included frog legs, grilled alligator, stuffed mushrooms, calamari, crawfish and some other stuff I can't remember. It was a great way to try a lot of different types of cajun food. I might not have liked them all but overall it was great to try and I recommend it to everyone. I then had the Cajun Ribeye. It was one of the best steaks I have ever had. I think out of the 9 dinners that I have eaten in New Orleans, 4 of them were the cajun ribeye. For lunch I had the cajun shrimp po' boy. I had to send my raw cajun fish of the day back to get it cooked...my vegetables were microwaved and were so soggy - could not touch them. The food here is pre-pared and sent out on plates after being thrown together by the chef. The tables have plastic cloths over them. Our waiter was nice but if you want cajun fried fast foot, then feel free and this is what you will find. read more

We stopped in for an early dinner before the Sugar Bowl and were seated and served right away. We ordered the shrimp bisque, which came out right away and was fabulous. Lots of shrimp in every bite! We also ordered the fried alligator appetizer because my son wanted to try it. It was excellent along with the sauce that came with it, a kind of spicy thousand island type. We also ordered a grilled shrimp poboy platter which came with fries and jambalaya. The bread was just plain, but there were plenty of shrimp on it. The jambalaya had a good flavor, but was a bit dry. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable. We ordered a bread pudding to go and it was heavenly! Great sauce! There were many a other items on the menu that sounded good, but we had limited time and budget. It's a casual place near the convention center and had a nice menu of specialty drinks. Mulate's is a restaurant with an elaborate menu and an interesting atmosphere. We had an appetizer sampler and a cocktail. The cocktail had more juice than liquor and the food was ok. The zydeco bread was prob my favorite if I had to pick one but extremely salty. The fried gator was extremely chewy. As a New Orleans native I am picky about New Orleans food, but I think Mulate's could take a little more pride in their staple food. read more

This place was recommended by one of the locals but it was just okay! Lee ordered gumbo, boudin, and chicken Alfredo pasta. It was all just okay! I don't eat gumbo but my husband and sister states that it was just okay; they give it a grade of C! The boudin was just okay, too! I like the one from walmart better! Stop by for a cold brew after a long walk from the convention to Omni hotel. Didn't have much to eat, except two cups of NOL signature soups - sherry and shrimp and gumbo- both were "off the chart" delicious. Next time, I'll get the bowl. Pretty disappointing in comparison with the rest of the food I ate in New Orleans. I ordered the shrimp stuffed with crabmeat. There was more filling than crab and it was WAY over cooked in the fryer. In addition, there were some hard pieces of crab shell in what little crabmeat there was. The twice baked potato was underseasoned, uninteresting and lukewarm. Pretty disappointing for $24.99. Don't waste your money here. Go to Gallianos across the street instead. Wish I had. read more

Hands down my favorite place I ate at for my random girls trip to New Orleans. This was a block away from my hotel and walking in, it truly felt like we were in New Orleans. The atmosphere and the music and the decor! I ordered the Seafood Pasta and I do not regret it one bit! The sauce was so creamy! I almost didn't order it because I thought it was too basic. But I'm glad I ordered it. The only negative for me was the service. It took forever to be seated, to get served and to pay. I ate at Mulates for the second time during a visit to the 2017 Essence Music Festival. My first experience eating at this restaurant was in 2014. I had a wonderful experience eating there the first time which is why I decided to return for a second visit. Unfortunately, my second visit to Mulates did not live up to my expectations. The food seemed to not be fresh (arrived lukewarm), in addition to being oily and flavorless. Every person in our party of 6 said their food was just "ok". We ordered the crab stuffed shrimp which looked burnt upon arrival and the fried shrimp platter which was cooked well, but seemed like it had been sitting under a warmer. To further disappoint us, the waiter was very socially awkward. When asked to bring out condiments he would say ok in a begrudging tone and return with the items we requested. He didn't seem very personable at all. At first nobody commented on his behavior until one of my friends asked "What's wrong with him?". Lastly, I did not like how we were automatically charged 18% gratuity for a table of 6. I do not think our waiter should have earned a $20 tip based on the service we were provided. read more

Tried to call our order in so we could just pick it up since we were working across the street and we were told it was way too busy we would have to come in to order, but it wouldn't take long for them to cook it. So really they were just trying to get us to wait at the bar and buy a drink while we waited in my opinion because they were only about half full. The atmosphere is nice and the guy who took our order was friendly. The catfish was a little dry and the bread was just ok. The etouffee was ok but expensive for how much you got and what it was. Came to the restaurant on a Friday night during Essence Fest looking for great New Orleans cuisine. The decor is ok, a little dated. My wife and I ordered Mojitos. They were super weak. My wife ordered onion rings and a seafood platter, I ordered grilled alligator and a house salad. Everything we tasted was extremely bland. The onion rings were rough, the seafood was undercooked, and the alligator was dry. We told our server and she simply said "I will tell my manager". No manager ever came by. The best thing I ate there was the croutons in my salad. All of that and our bill was $93. Will never go back when I'm in town. read more

Excellent, down home food. Huge portions. I had the Grilled Chicken on salad. Loved all of the garden in my salad, including fresh green beans. Purple Rain is a delicious cocktail with a subtle taste and happy buzz. My friend had a "bowl" of homemade gumbo that was to die for. Order the sweet tea and you get a lovely glass at least 20 ounces. Well worth every penny. Fresh, fast and tasty. read more

My boyfriend and I went here to have a fun dinner out while visiting New Orleans. I got a jumbo lump crab meat au gratin dinner that was absolutely delicious. It was so good that I was sad when I got full! My boyfriend had a grilled stuffed soft shell crab plate, but the crab was unfortunately not warm, which turned him off. We ended up ordering dessert to-go and got the bread pudding, which was heavenly! Oh my, it was sooo good. Music was great. Did not appreciate being told we could not sit at one of the tables in the half-empty restaurant area since we only wanted to listen to the zydeco and have a drink or two. There were two tables designated for us to sit at in the very back of the restaurant, behind the musicians, one of which had three people sitting there along with two waitstaff who were folding napkins. We sat at the empty one, which had obviously not been cleared since its previous occupants, as there were half-full glasses, napkins and food littering its top. My husband brought us drinks from the bar, as we had been instructed to do by the hostess, and about 15 minutes later two more waitstaff plopped down with utensils and napkins and proceeded with their task. I can understand that the restaurant doesn't want usable tables cluttered with non-paying occupants, but there were only six tables that were occupied when we arrived and five when we left, out of 15-20. The waitress who informed me that we couldn't sit at the original table we had chosen because we were getting our drinks from the bar (again, as the hostess had told us to do), and not ordering from her, still didn't make any money from an empty table, which remained empty during our stay, so I don't quite get what that gained this establishment in general. Don't think I would recommend this place without strong warnings. read more

Wow! This was the NOLA food experience we were looking for. Mary Alice was our amazing server who wisely suggested a wonderful dish that navigated around our sensitivity to spicy food: Soft shell crab on a crab cake doused with a flavorful crab sauce. It was great! The restaurant takes you back in a nice atmosphere in a building that has stood for decades (or longer). We'll be back and we'll recommend to our friends! read more

Invited to a corporate dinner at NOLA Warehouse/Business District, this restaurant not impressive at all. The greeting was poor to none, actually none. Felt like they could care less for your business and place wasn't even packed. The bartender didn't even ask if we wanted a drink and we were prepared to dropped some serious cash. The venue itself blah. And get this, the site for the baquet dinner was in another building, separate entrance from the restaurant and looked like a community hall. The food was nothing to brag about. Buffet selection included pasta, green salad, beans and rice, jambalaya, chicken tenders and for dessert bread pudding and pecan pie. Food servers walking around with appetizers sausage and quiche. Only good thing was bread pudding and sausage and seeing people enjoying each others' company. The beans in the jambalaya was burnt. There was also something burnt in the gumbo. I dunno if they taste things before they serve it to the public but if they did they should have tossed these items out and started over. The scenery was different because there was a live band and dancing. This place is awesome for date nights. TIPPING is not optional (as a former waitress I always leave a tip) but 18% GRATUITY is AUTOMATICALLY charged to your bill. And now it make sense why my waitress never came by refill our drinks because she was getting a large tip no matter what (my 18% was $34). Despite these flaws, the shrimp was amazing, sampler appetizer was delicious, and the cheesy crab dish was off the chain. read more
