We dropped in here in the midst of a day of museum meanderings because it was right in the middle of all the wonderful culture. We were seated immediately. The menu is extensive but most of the selections have the heavy Mexican influence, which is to be expected in the southwest. My ailmentary tract has to tread cautiously in these conditions! I ordered the quiche which had a delightful flavor but was exceedingly dry. The plate presentation was dynamic...fresh melons, grapes, berries. All in all it was an excellent meal, despite the texture of the quiche. When the bill was presented all together, the waiter was not pleased when we asked him to give us separate checks. He had someone else return with the individual tabs, we paid and all was good. The view from the window where we were seated was magnificent as are all views from almost any window in Santa Fe. The restaurant was luxurious without being posh. There was a pianist playing quietly which added to the relaxing ambience. Maybe I just didn't have a good experience. My mother and I drove up to see the Indian Culture museum, not realizing that there were 2 museums in the same complex. We hadn't eaten lunch, so we opted to eat before going in. We walked up to the hostess stand, which asks you to wait to be seated. We waited. We waited. I told her that we should leave, when a young lady came out. "Where do you want to sit?" I'd prefer somewhere cooler. She wanted to sit us in the sun. I asked for inside. I heard her snort. A pretty (older) lady was our waitress. She was nice, but we only saw her maybe once. My mother ordered a steak salad. I asked for a patty melt, with a side salad. My mother's steak was marinated. It had a good flavor and was tender. She had asked for well done. It came out more medium, but it wasn't bleeding, so she didn't send it back. Her salad was over dressed. My side salad came with the dressing on the side. I didn't even taste it. The patty melt was just ok. It wasn't anything special. My iced tea glass wasn't empty for too long. I watched a series of wait staff arrive to work. I swear, they must have had 8 people working. What really surprised me was a tall, thin young man. He arrived with his shirt untucked, no tie. (I could care less.) He then proceeded to unbuckle his pants, unzip, then tuck in his shirt. This was happening right in the dining room, next to the bar. He was having a conversation with a waitress, as he did that. I am not a prude, by any means. However, this could have easily been done in the bathroom, which is not but a few steps away, and prevent any potential embarrassment from the patrons. I never saw his underwear and his back was towards me, but his pants did slide down, as he tucked in his shirt. Several pitchers of tea and water were taken out to a serving area, in the patio. There was no cover on the pitchers, so bugs and dirt could easily get into them. (That really bothered my mother.) Cute little place. I didn't mind the food. Views are incredible! read more

Museum Hill in Santa Fe offers one central destination for exploring some of the city's finest museums and some of the world's greatest collections of Native American art and artifacts. Located high up on a lofty hill above the city, Museum Hill was the brainchild of Standard Oil magnate and millionaire John D. Rockefeller, who chose the spot in the late 1920's despite protests from some art bigwigs who argued for a downtown locale. Rockefeller became fascinated with Native Southwestern culture during a 1927 visit to the area. He proposed to develop a school dedicated to Native Studies in Colorado but the area was too rugged and remote. He was then persuaded to fund a Dept. of Anthropology in Santa Fe. At this time, two wealthy sisters who were art patrons, sold a prime, ridge-top plot of 50 acres to the Dept. for only $50. Planning for the future Museum Hill had begun. The dramatic silhouette on a ridge with sweeping views in all directions turned out to be an excellent place in which to feature: The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture, the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian, the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, and the Museum of International Folk Art. The Santa Fe Botanic Garden recently opened on Museum Hill. The embarrassment of cultural riches here on the Hill is almost shameful in it's abundance, in this, the arts capital of the Southwest. The first museum you'll come to as you arrive at Museum Hill is the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art housing traditional arts from the period when New Mexico was a Spanish colony. On Milner Plaza, there is the state-run Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and the Museum of International Folk Art. Last stop on the Hill: the small, private Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian.. There are admission charges to these venues. Travel between downtown Santa Fe Plaza and Museum Hill and the Santa Fe Plaza by taking the "M" line operated in collaboration with Santa Fe Trails, the city's bus line. The host seat us, but did not gave us menu 15 minutes after we seated, we have to ask for menu ourselves. And the server who served us did not check on us at all after we ordered. The service feels inattentive. It's not a busy brunch time, so I'm not sure what's the excuse. Will not dine in here again. Food also taste very mediocre. read more

This is a beautifully situated restaurant at the IAC museum complex, with stunning views of the mountains and valley. The brunch selections we had - crispy red polenta and breakfast burrito, mimosas, Bloody Mary, pecan pie and chocolate cake - were all excellent. Unfortunately, the service was abysmal. Our waitress (Gina) greeted us but then disappeared for nearly 10 minutes, forcing us to ask another staff member to find her - which didn't work because she still didn't return. Finally, another waitress came over and took our order for Gina, who finally returned - with the wrong drinks! Also, she only brought some of our order - some else brought our meals and dessert. Neither she nor anyone else bussed the table until we explicitly asked that they remove empty plates, glasses, water bottle, etc. - and even then left things behind. This was especially troubling given that there were only 3 other tables here at the time as we arrived right at the beginning of brunch. I even had to bring my check up to the register in order to cash out - and then stood there while 4 different staff walked by without attending to me. Was here for an hour and 55 of those minutes were waiting around. The sign said to wait to be seated but nobody was there and someone finally came out after a line started to form. I was seated inside and waited 10 minutes before the waiter came over and asked what I wanted. Since I looked over the menu outside I ordered right away but this guy had a sort of "whaduhyawant" attitude. I ordered the steak tacos with grilled jalapenos and they were pretty depressing. Smaller than your average street tacos (there were 3) and they had very little meat and onions in them. I think the side of guacamole and salsa had more volume. I asked three people for my bill after I had waited 10 minutes since finishing lunch. One guy was clearly only cleaning off tables, the second guy said "its with another waiter" (and had a don't bother me attitude), and the third lady finally brought it but then nobody came back. I finally got up and went to the counter and the second guy was there but called someone else over to take care of my bill. My original waiter walked by and looked confused. "You pay?" He asks. I was trying to but this clueless dude wouldn't know that because he never came by my table after taking my order. Yet another waiter rang up my bill but then left it there behind the counter because he was busy making drinks. They were busy, I get that. But to completely neglect a customer is just rude. That, and there were flies everywhere. I'd go somewhere else if this wasn't the only eatery in this museum complex. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. I came here for lunch during Indian Market week, I know.... The food was good but management has to plan ahead, they were understaffed in the dining room (only ONE waiter in, only ONE waiter outside. However, things went well. My biggest complaint is about a couple of women museum employees who used the dining room as a work-meeting room to discuss business, they took a 4-seat table covered with papers and notes. They were loud and quite rude behaving like over-the-top while locals and visitors tried to enjoy their lunch. I feel that museum management should look into this and not let employees go into the restaurant unless they go to eat. It was plain rude. read more

Came here for lunch on July 4 and was very happy with the food. Prices were not unreasonable and the food was very good. A great place to enjoy a lunch in the shade while visiting Santa Fe. I do agree with Mae S.'s comment about following the example of the Museum of the American Indian by offering a selection of more "traditional" Santa Fe or other foods traditionally eaten in the area. Also, it would be nice to have the food be sourced seasonally/locally as much as possible. But, all in all, I had a great experience there. read more

We had a great meal here at the cafe. The food was greatly enjoyed and well worth the price. As other reviewers have noted the service was not particularly speedy, but it was a nice day and we weren't in a hurry. (And thanks to Yelp we had been warned about the service and also other customers' dogs.) The setting was particularly nice. Visitors who are in the area should at least stop by for a drink and appetizer so they can relax and soak-in the museum plaza with its wonderful views and sculptures. The food was delicious. The view of Santa Fe was excellent. Not in love with all of the wait staff. The person who greeted us allowed us to be seated, even though they weren't quite open yet. We had a wait, but we expected that so it wasn't an issue. Not all of the ingredients for our ordered food was available so my friend ordered something else from the menu and wasn't disappointed. I wanted breakfast and ordered the egg tostada. This is a dish that I grew up with, the tortilla was crisp and light, the beans flavorful and the fried eggs cooked to perfection. The red chile that came on the side was not the fiery red that I'm used to, but it had good flavor and I'm sure that there are some non chile head palates that need to be pleased. I have to disclose that I'm giving 4 stars based on the food and view. Our waitress was efficient, friendly and accommodating. Here's the but. One of the staff came out of the back area, sat on the wine bar to put his boot/shoes on. He used the back bar to rest his feet as he tied his shoes. He then began to saunter off. Being the outspoken mom that I am, I asked him if he was actually going to just walk away? He smirked and asked "what"???. I told him in no uncertain terms that I saw his butt on the bar and his shoes on the back bar. He looked me in the eye, smirked and slouched off without any other response. UGH! I advised our waitress of what we had seen and his response to me. Her remark was that neither area was used for food prep but she'd clean it right away, which she did. Shortly thereafter, another member of the wait staff brought a full plate of food, set it down where the offending shoes had been and began to eat from the plate. So, no customer food on that counter, but staff food is. I wonder if they know that their co-worker puts his backside and shoes where their food goes?? It's not a bad place to have a meal, but with so many other options available in Santa Fe, I'm not sure that I'd go back. read more

We ate here for lunch memorial day weekend. It was super busy and it was clear to the host as well as the staff was flustered and ill prepared. Once seated we waited 10-15 minutes before our server greeted us. It took forever to get drinks and was almost impossible for refills. Although the host and other servers passed us multiple times our empty glasses were ignored. When our food finally came it was just fair, we got the the chicken mole and MHC tuna melt. The restaurant was noisy, they had a piano player belting out loud and disruptive music in a room lacking the acoustics to support such loud and fast music choices. I was not happy with the food or service and would not go back. Our appetizer was brought out with our entrees, and was cold. Neither of us thought our entrees were anything to write home about. More than 4 shrimp in an entree would have been nice. Our server said nothing about the delinquency of the appetizer, but a simple "sorry for the wait" would have prevented this review. I usually get annoyed with the number of times I'm interrupted to be asked if everything was ok, but at MHC, I wished the server would have come back at least once so I could have voiced my complaint about the late, cold appetizer. I do wish Yelp let reviewers rate food and service separately. We found the food very good but the service lacking. As I read other current 2015 reviews and comments about the service I'm sure we all experienced the same waiter. Like spit on a griddle our waiter jumped here and there without completing a task or listening to a customer. When he first came to our table I requested a glass of water explaining I was desperate to take some medicine. He insisted on taking our drink order first. After a considerable wait the water and ordered drinks arrived but he ran off before we could place our meal order. We had to request ice tea refills and then wait about 10 minutes. Upon finishing our meal the waiter removed the plates without offering a dessert menu. Again, we had to flag him down, request to be told about desserts and withstand a lengthy wait before he appeared with a sampler plate yet seemed very impatient for a decision after rushing thru naming the options. His behavior was the same with other tables he was assigned. We had plenty of time to observe the restaurant's operation and the problems did not appear to be consistent with the other wait staff. Getting beyond the service issue the food was much better than we expected. I found my chicken mole to be perhaps the best I've ever experienced. The flavors were so well balance no one flavor stood out - a not so simple preparation perfectly balanced. The generous serving of shredded chicken breast mole was accompanied by well-seasoned beans, rice and three small corn tortillas. When I praised the mole we were told that the chef was from Mexico and learned to make mole from her grandmother. My husband ordered a tomato basil soup and half a reuben sandwich. I had to sample his thick soup sprinkled with feta cheese, we both found it to be very good. The 1/2 reuben was large and thick with corn beef. Strangely, when picked up it dripped a pool of liquid. I've never seen such a wet reuben. When we requested additional napkins our waiter said, "I know it's really drippy". Bob used a knife and fork on the remaining sandwich. Once we saw the dessert tray we wanted a sampler of every option but decided on only two: the key lime pie and coconut cream pie. Both were very good but the coconut cream was the best we've every been privileged to enjoy. I asked if the dessert were made in house and was told that they had three different pastry chefs make the desserts. Obviously well chosen chefs. We would definitely visit the Museum Hill Cafe again - and order the chicken mole and hope coconut cream pie was again available. Even if not visiting one of the outstanding museums lunch here is worth the trip up the hill. We'd just try to not have the tallest waiter flitting from table to table. Museum Hill Cafe is open from 9am - 5pm daily, May to October, serving lunch from 11am - 3 pm, beverages and pastries all other hours. Fewer days and hours other months. read more
