What I wasn't expecting was to be at the front of the line and have 6 groups behind me being let in first and being told each time that they are "cleaning my bar seat" and that I will be seated shortly. I was told I'd be seated shortly and then in the span of 20 minutes following that about 15 people behind me were let in first. I was dining alone and this was a very embarrassing experience for me to have about half of the line behind me go ahead of me and I'm left waiting outside. Don't feel that this is fault of the staff but It was a very unpleasant and sad experience for me, I would've left but already waited an hour to get to the front. Neptune is epic, no doubt. But depending on your dining partners, it may not be the end-all for seafood in Boston. I took my parents here this past weekend, and while I was well aware of the long wait times, negotiating when to go put down your name vs. when you'd eat turned out to be a bit more hassle than it was worth. If you go early, say before 5pm, you may get seated quite quickly. However show up too late, anytime after 7pm, and you likely won't get a table at all. It's a gamble. The food is delicious, especially the fried Ipswich clams. But the hot lobster roll was a bit of a disappointment. It's chock full o' lobster, that's for sure, but it's too much meat and not enough flavor. I was sick of eating it by the end. We knew going into this that we would have a long wait. For a table of 4, we showed up at 5pm. We got the call our table was ready at about 8pm. Though they don't take reservations, you won't have to wait in a long line like giacomos. So we walked around the north end and Faneuil hall, got drinks and enjoyed the beautiful day. The restaurant is small like most restaurants in the north end. You can smell the butter in the air. A few of us got oysters, and they were amazing. Fresh, refreshing and delicious. "This is the best oyster I have ever had and I don't like oysters!" according to one of my friends. I tried the beausoleil, and tasted the hint of champagne. We shared the fried oyster appetizer, which ended being plenty for the 4 girls to share. We also shared the warm lobster roll as pairs. With a glass of wine, our bill split 4 ways only came to about $40 each. I am by no means an expert on lobster but this lobster roll is one of the most amazing things I've ever put in my mouth. My girlfriend who drove up to the north shore last week for a lobster roll wishes she had stayed in Boston. The appetizer of fried oysters was great but in retrospect I would have preferred more raw oysters. Btw raw oysters are about $3 each. I highly recommend Neptune oysters. The legendary Neptune Oyster, line always out the door...well, that's a little misleading, because the place only have around 20 seats. We got there around 5, and was told an hour wait. Neptune has a fairly small menu for a small space. There is a special for each day. We started with some oysters, not cheap but definitely very fresh. We got the seared scallops and shrimp & grits (Thurs special). Scallops were perfectly cooked, tender on the inside and crusty on the outside. Shrimp & grits was delicious and a little spicy. Back in August 2010, I came here based on the reviews. We came here for lunch, and we were greeted warmly. The ambiance was really nice, but if you come here, be prepared to sit closely with other people. You can actually sit at the counter as well. Our server was really nice and answered any questions that we had. We both ordered the warm lobster roll, and OMG!!! DELICIOUS!!! I'm drooling right now as I type, it was just THAT fabulous!! The fries were perfection. If my experience here for lunch was spectacular, why did I knock off a star? Well, the following day, we went back for dinner, which was our last night in Boston - yes, it was THAT good. It was REALLY crowded outside. I'm not ashamed to say i drove up to Boston from NJ this past weekend just to get a lobster roll from Neptune Oyster. Granted i've only been here twice, its hard to leave without being completely satisfied. I'm sure ill be back again. Note: theres usually a long wait time (~1-2hrs) but its worth it. Going with a hot buttered lobster roll ($29) and a half of dozen oysters is a solid combo. The lobster roll is served on a hot brioche buttered bun with large chunks of lobster meat soaked in hot butter. Its a pretty rich meal which can get messy but you wont care after devouring it. Both times i've ordered the meal i've never come close to doing any damage on my fries so i might consider switching to a salad side next time. The cold lobster roll with mayo is also good but i prefer going with the hot buttered lobster roll. You get a better lobster experience without being somewhat overcome by the mayo taste. read more

TLDR: Worth the wait. As everyone else will tell you, Neptune is a great but hard place to go to. For a 5:30pm table on a Saturday for 5, we had to check in at 2pm. We ended up getting seated at 6, and groups putting their names down at that time had 4ish hour waits ahead of them. So if you're wandering around Boston, swing by here first (and early!) to put your name down. Part of the wait is because the place itself is pretty small and fairly low frills in terms of design. We got the Triton Plateau (oysters, mussels, clams, lobster, crab) for the table, which was a good amount of appetizer, but would have been nice to have more oysters. Of course, got the warm lobster roll for the meal ($31), which was probably the best lobster roll I've had, after 7 years in Boston. Three star and a half. They have 12 choices of oysters when I visit here. We tried all of them. The oysters are fresh and well-cleaned. Our favorite is summerside oysters which are small but have concentrated taste. We ordered lobster rolls and Neptune burgers for our main courses, but they are unfortunately too salty. However, I still love the Neptune burger, because they have fried oysters in it, and they are super palatable. Gosh, I REALLY wanted to like this place. So badly did I want to that I made excuses for a few things until I just had to face the reality -- this place is WAY over-hyped. Loved the variety + detail in describing every oyster and clam to really help you identify what you will like. The rest of the food reviews go downhill from here... Next was the Clam Chowder. Probably the biggest disappointment. This is New England. If you can't manage to make a good cup of chowder, you should not have a 3-hour wait at your restaurant. The chowder was VERY WATERY and the potatoes were raw. My Boston-bred boyfriend also agreed. We next split the Scallops entree. The scallops were raw in the center, but besides that, the dish itself was confusing. The flavors and components they put together just do not make any sense together. Very disjointed dish. It had a great consistency for a milky soup and best of all there were actual clams in it. The taste was perfect. Spanish octopus was amazing. It wasn't chewy. The octopus was cooked right and it was quite tasty. For the main entree, we ordered the maine lobster roll sandwich with butter and with a salad side rather than the fries. I'm sure the place already makes enough off of their so-called delicious food. Food - Don't let the good looks fool you. I'm all for butter but there was WAYYYY too much. It was to the point that the roll was soaked in it and was falling apart. Some pieces of lobster seemed kind of chewy. I went in with high expectations (I've witnessed the long waiting lines when walking past this place before) and those expectations were stepped on, slapped in the face and beaten to a pulp. We arrived about 25 minutes prior to it opening and luckily were about 4 people away from NOT making the first wave. We sat at the bar (I recommend you do the same) and enjoyed the hell out of our meal. The lobster roll was delicious, but who knew that the bread used for that roll would be so amazing? The fries were impressive too. We also had the Triton Plateau; an amazing collection of crab and lobster salad, muscles, clams and oysters. All of the items were fresh and fantastically flavorful. N.O. has an extensive wine list and draught beer to boot. Yes, this place is expensive, but seafood typically is and it's certainly worth setting aside some vacation money to treat yourself to the best seafood in Boston (and possibly the world!) **Tip 1** Try to get to N.O. 30 minutes before it opens. Little did I know I was in for one of the best lunches of my life. First off, I was utterly charmed by their oyster crackers. I've always enjoyed oyster crackers, but I had no idea what an amateur I had been. Oysters are listed on the large mirror menu and average $2.50 each...be careful but they looked fresh. I had the Harpoon IPA which is just right with the cold lobster roll with mayo....fresh chunks of meaty lobster mixed with mayo and served with crispy seasoned fries. A very close second with an equal quantity of lobster is the lobster salad caprese - it is drizzled with a light pesto sauce that absolutely blends perfectly....share with your companion for the best of both lobster worlds. I arrived around 11:35 and was immediately seated. I shared a platter of 20 oysters and clams. On average they come out to about $3 a pop. Not too shabby but not cheap either, I like their variety of oysters from the East and West Coast. None of the oysters were briny, I preferred the oysters over clams. I like that the server tells you which oysters you are eating so you can train to become an oyster connoisseur and develop a certain preference in mind. Id prob not recommend the chowder from Neptune's - head to Quincy Market instead? Per recommendation of the people sitting next to us at the bar and our waitress, we got the **Buttermilk Johnycakes** aka honey butter, smoked trout tartare, and Little Pearl caviar on a cornmeal pancake. If I were to give a dish to describe decadent, it would be this one... it tasted as if a whole stick of butter was put into it, and it was divine! There was a hint of acidity to each bit of sweet and salty, and it had a great sense of textures... If I were given whatever I wanted in my last dying meal, this would definitely be on that list of my dying last bites. It really is THAT good, and I would definitely recommend it! The HOT buttered lobster roll... I'm typically not a huge fan of lobster; I prefer my crab and shrimp and raw seafood... but if lobster we're to be done any way, it should be done the way it is here at Neptune's: piled high and oozing with butter. Its over the top and definitely gonna require a few extra notches on your belt, but worth the go at least once if not more for the die-hard lobster fans. Neptune is a small restaurant nestled in North End, so you are likely to wait quite a while for seats. Luckily, they'll call you once they have space for you, which, for tourist such as ourselves, allowed us to explore the neighborhood. Mmmmmmm mmmmm mmmmm..... Buttered Lobster Roll! A friend told us the lobster rolls here were awesome and in my quest for finding the best lobster rolls places in NE, I had to try it. I was not disappointed at all and although it was a hot butter lobster roll and one can't really compare to cold lobster rolls but in the category of a lobster rolls, it's #1 on my list so far. For reference, Legal's cold lobster roll is one of the best and Summer Shack running up second. The oysters menu is very informative and descriptive. A little expensive compared to other restaurants but they were cold and delicious. The waitress suggested stout beers that were created with oysters to pair with them. The oysters were cold and good but one can still find $1 oysters out there that cost $2-3 here. On a note on seeing other people's food, the shrimp is huge! The shrimps were about 1-2" thick and about 3-5" long. The mussel appetizer was looked good too. I'm going to have to try the shrimps when I get back here again. The place is small and you'll have to wait outside in the cold if there is no room. No reservations too. Also, if it is cold, make sure you shut the door quickly since it doesn't shut on it's own. SPIDERS IN MY SALAD* I really wanted to love it here, but unfortunately, the chip on their shoulders prevented them from any sort of pleasurable experience. Upon waiting 3 hours for a seat, I received my $40 lobster roll, that came equipped with a family Of spiders nested in my salad. I calmly told the waitress about this horrifically disgusting matter. She proceeded to take my plate, remove the lettuce, and give me back my same lobster roll stating "it's organic greens, it's expected that their are insects in it." No apology from management, no money off the bill, not the slightest attempt at making it better. Just a poor excuse. No lobster roll should be $40, either. It was good, but it's a damn hotdog roll. Won't be going back and would urge people not to wait the 4 hours. read more

As a new Bostonian, I knew I had to try out some lobster and what better place to get the fix than at Neptune Oyster?! My friend and I came around 4pm on a Sunday and it was about a 50-minute wait for the both of us. They're very smart though, and took down our number so that we wouldn't have to wait around out front to get seated. The restaurant itself is very small and tight -- you really get to know your neighbours, whether it be through direct conversation or from overhearing theirs (lol). But all that doesn't matter once the food comes out. We had ordered the hot lobster roll with butter and it was absolutely heaven. Definitely worth the hype! The lobster pieces were really big and yummy. I would avoid the clam chowder though; the soup was way too watery, none of the clams tasted fresh, and the potatoes were undercooked. read more

Showed up for lunch at 1:15pm... and had a 45 min wait :( We actually went to another restaurant to get something to tide us over... Because there's no place to wait so we had to leave our number and they called us when seats at the bar opened up. And the server was just short of rude. Ordinarily we'd have just eaten at the other restaurant but we really wanted seafood soooooo... We eventually got to eat here... We got some oysters and shrimp to start with. The shrimp were good but not exceptional, a little chewy... which for the price I'd expect them to be sweeter and not so tough. The oysters were super fresh and the mookies in particular were amazing. The cocktail and mignonette were both freshly made. We then ordered fried clams and the plate was HUGE and piled high with freshly fried clams. They were salty, crispy, and delicious. We also tried the chowder, but it was too thin- it was almost watery. The flavor was there but it was unappetizing because it was kind of like clam flavored milk. My friend also got the lobster roll which was wicked expensive and did have a good bit of lobster in it, but was nothing exceptional. In fact the bread was a little soggy- the butter missed the lobster a little... Sitting shoulder to shoulder at the bar, waiting 45 mins at lunch, the entire experience was ok but the food was a bit hit or miss. I definitely wouldn't wait again to go here, unless I seriously find I cannot love without those clams... but there are other places in the city that can fry a clam... read more

We went to Neptune Oyster House after my friend recommended the place. I thought it was ok, but way overpriced. It's a small place fits about 50 pp only, but we got there way before opening hr and had to wait around. It finally opened at 11:30am. Same menu for lunch & dinner, but I thought it would be cheaper at lunch - no way! Be warned! We got: bowl of chowder - nice, though overpriced $11. Waitress didn't give me crackers, though I saw her give it to another table later. That's evil. Lobster roll - $24!! One lobster roll w/ fries. Overpriced, but tasty. Didn't try the fries - husband said just ok. Bowl of littlenecks $12 - tasty, lots of garlic in sauce. One unisex bathroom in the back of the small restaurant, before the kitchen & bar. Credit cards taken & you'll need it. So expensive. read more

when you're in town, head to Neptune and just stick around. actually... don't. you're taking up space for other customers. i don't know if neptune takes reservations, but i got extremely lucky. my flight was at 2:15 and i stopped by neptune at around 11:50pm and got seated right away at the bar. usually i hear the wait is around 1+ hours.... i guess since it was just me, its was easier for them to seat me. i started off with two different oysters. and having tried oysters at other seafood joints in boston, i have to say that neptune carries one of the best tasting ones. i forgot the name, but it has a buttery finish to it. i could eat them all day! (RANDOM FACT: if you didn't know, oyster are an aphrodisiac) haha... the one thing that you must get is the lobster roll. everyone talks about it.. but yes. its delicious. i wish my roll had more butter with it. the chunks of lobster were juicy and fresh. i think for 27$ it was an fair amount of lobster. the fries are also damn delicious. i came in hungry and left sated. my only gripe about this place is the size of the restaurant. its so tiny. read more

It's really small inside and there's always a wait here. Make sure you come in by 730pm if you want to be guaranteed a table. I came in here around 730/8pm on a Friday one time and the waitlist was so long that they couldn't add any more people to the list. Came here earlier the next time around and although they didn't kick us out this time, we still had to wait for an hour before we got seated. We ordered their clam chowder, oysters, lobster rolll, and their north end cioppino and they were delicious. The oysters were really fresh and i really liked their lobster roll. My boyfriend however thought it was too plain and buttery. My only complaint was that their fries that came with the lobster were way too salty. Will come back here soon! read more
