This might be my hidden favorite Thai place! I came here on a Sunday, not feeling very hungry, but needed something to eat. I opted for the Tom yum noodle soup for $6.95 and most of their menu items are around the same price. The bessssst Tom yum soup I ever had, hands down. It was very flavorful with the noodles and they didn't cheap out on the ingredients. The soup had an abundant amount of fish balls, fish cakes, ground chicken, etc. My bf got the Thai boat which was really good as well and he had an amazing portion of the ingredients. In my book, there's not a lot of Thai places I enjoy. I think it's because I have been exposed to a number of them growing up. New Star Thai is located in the Food court of Diamond Square Plaza. The food at New Star Thai is super affordable. For Boat Noodle (Thai version of pho, a beef noodle soup), it's about $8. Being in a food court, it's not the fanciest. But the food is good ---for the time I went. My father mentioned that the food quality changes day by day. Maybe they rotate chefs, so I'm not entirely sure. But I trust my dad's taste buds better than my own. I also tried their Thai Iced Coffee. It is waaaaayyyy sweeter than it needs to be --- and Thai Iced Coffee is already considered very sweet. I definitely recommend New Star if you're in the neighborhood and looking for Thai food. But I wouldn't take a first date there. read more

A couple things. Bring cash. I found them through Yelp, I didn't see it say cash only anywhere. Upon arriving the woman didn't speak English which is fine but she didn't seem to understand anything I said. She said no when I tried to give her my card. Held up a dollar and pointed at it. I asked where an atm was and she didn't understand. I asked why the man on the phone when ordering didn't tell me i needed to bring cash, she unfortunately didn't understand. I had to waste more time trying to find an atm, I couldn't, I had to go down the street to find somewhere to get cash back and then go back. I went back and paid for my meal. I took my food home, when opening it, it smelled burned. My mother agreed. It had a charred smell to it. And didn't taste like it normally would. I'm disappointed because the reviews seemed pretty good in regards to price and taste. One of the best kept secrets in town! These guys make all the food fresh and so it's definitely worth the wait in the portion size it is huge and most entrées come with white rice. The parking lot is a little challenging and so is the language barrier but if you can get over those to the hidden gem is behind this food court counter in Rosemead California at the Square. If you're vegan and on a budget, then you can likely relate to the struggle of finding affordable and delicious food at restaurants, especially non-vegan ones. The vegan soup here, #16, tasted like heaven on earth. First off, the noodle quality is off the charts. They're rice noodles, but they're so chewy! You can tell the noodles aren't cheap at all. They had great substance to them and were well cooked. The soup also has deep fried tofu chunks and greens, which were soothingly good and filling. The broth was not over-toned with salt or seasoning. It was mild, yet its welcoming warmth put me in a state of tranquility and joy. Encountering leeks and bean sprouts made for further flavorful adventure. And another one of the best parts? IT WAS ONLY $6.50!!!!! You will NOT be able to beat that price, I promise you. The date of this review is November 6, 2016. This is a Thai fast food place located in The Square Food Court surrounded by large number of Chinese eateries. On that day, I decided to have a quick Thai lunch to satisfy my hunger. I ordered Thai Pineapple Curry (Yellow Curry) with beef. The food is freshly made while you wait. The curry comes with plenty of white rice. The portions were very generous and satisfy the appetite of any starving person. It only costs $6.95 (tax included!). Where else can you find decent Thai-Chinese food in the area where every item on the menu is $5 to $8? Tax and tip are included in that price. The value is simply unbeatable. Ever since Star Thai has been under new management, the overall food quality at this food stall improved. The previous chefs appeared to be taking shortcuts to everything, such as by using frozen vegetables, serving Thai soups in a bowl rather than a traditional pot, and never offering seafood items despite it being on the menu. Not only has the cooking significantly better, but the menu expanded, so I can finally order something beyond stir-fry street noodles. This past week, I ordered the kana moo krob (Chinese broccoli with crispy pork) and I was highly impressed with the new chef's cooking. Some restaurants, even in Thai Town and East Hollywood, tend to overcook the pork belly so that it's super dried out and impossible to eat. Here, the pork belly was perfectly crunchy on the edges. The blanched Chinese broccoli tasted reasonably fresh, and the gravy wasn't overwhelmingly sweet as some restaurants might prepare this dish. New Star's gravy contained a little fermented flavor from the addition of yellow bean (soybean?) mixed with garlic. I've also tried the nam tok which was packed with juicy and acidic flavors. Compared to the Isaan versions, the beef here was easy on the chili flakes and more aggressive with the lime, sugar, and fish sauce. Ideally the nam tok is eaten with sticky rice, which Star Thai doesn't prepare, but they provided a big bowl of Jasmine rice for free. That's very nice, because not too many Thai restaurants provide complimentary rice, as it's not part of the Thai tradition. To improve the taste of the nam tok, I would only suggest softening the acidic flavor of the beef with earthy and herbally accompaniments such as cabbage leaves and mint leaves, rather than unremarkable lettuce and carrot strips. Star Thai is solid for a Thai-Chinese quick fix in the 626. I would recommend it as long as you're OK eating at a food court with sticky tables. read more

The husband cooks it drier and I prefer it this way, while the wife cooks it more wet. American and Chinese broccoli marriage is lush on this plate. Protein was tender on a good day, and overcooked rubbery on a bad day. LOL! There are more good days than bad. Crab Fried Rice - Pretty good. You can really taste all that seafood flavor in this dish. Thinly shredded crab meat, not the lump crab meat I'm more use to though. Thai Boat Noodle Soup - So good with rice noodles (banh Pho), blanched Chinese broccoli, garnished chopped culantro and chopped cilantro. Beef stock has a lot of flavor with various Asian spices. All the protein is tender and a plenty. The portion is generous, and best eaten while dine-in and scorching hot. Chicken Pad Thai - Strong nutty taste so beware allergic reactions. LOL! Protein (i.e chicken breast) is tender and I highly suggest to squeeze in some lime juice to balance the sweetness. Sauce is generous and more towards the wet side, wife owner was cooking it, than dry. However, some dishes might have a lot more of the vegetables and seasonings/herbs than the main portion of the dish. I grew up around this Asian food court. Decided to go for Thai food again, and this little mom and pop store was delicious! Not only was the little lady sweet, she was super kind to my family. FOOD QUALITY: After having debated two minutes between Pad Thai or Pad See Ew, waiting for eight minutes for food to come out, and one minute of wrestling the bag open; here sits my Pad Thai with a steam of smoke rushing out the moment that I open it. It's still smoking after a minute too. Strangely it didn't cook long enough for it to pick up that good wok flavor, and while the green onion flavor was mellowed out it was still slightly uncooked. At the very least, it had a pleasant pad thai taste as it gave a mild tamarind sweet and sourness that gets accentuated with lime juice over it; the carrots and bean sprouts help keep the feel of the dish cleaner as the sauce felt a little thicker than the average thai restaurant. I really like the beef salad and crispy pork w Chinese broccoli. Service is timely and they are English friendly , cash only! Beef salad at other places is like to run you $15 after tip. This little hole in the wall has 4 of the best thai dishes I have ever had in the states and the most affordable Thai food in L.A. county. Their crispy pork and chinese broccoli is to die for! Perfect crispy delicious pork with a heaping pile of chinese broccoli will leave you satisfied. Their ground pork with mint leaves and fired egg are another go to dish for me. This place is cash only so make sure to bring your dollar bills. I grew up eating around this food court so I am very familiar with the area. This is a great place for affordable Thai food.
