At the risk of not being able to get a table I'm giving a five star review, I love Nicks. Food here and especially the ribs are amazing and like the menu says they're literally "falling off the bone", and they come with the best salad and dressing on the planet. After 5 you can get a baked potato with it instead of fries. The fries are only good, not great. The bistro plate is also wonderful if your date loves a filet instead. The best.com. forget how amazingly delicious this place is. Every dish we had for lunch tasted amazing! From the butternut squash soup of the day, to the Scottish salmon that was perfectly cooked and seasoned, spinach and potatoes were yum, the kale and quinoa salad tasted so good, and the blackened fish burger was tasty. I came here with my Mom and friend to celebrate my birthday. It was absolutely lovely. Aerial was our server and she was beyond fabulous. So attentive without being overly so and kind. The food,as always,was fabulous(don't ever take the sautéed spinach off the menu ). The celebration cake and butter cake were divine! And the card with all the signatures was amazing. Sorry to rain on everyone's parade here - especially since I've had good experiences at Nick's in the past! Believe me, I was very surprised to find that the signature Cioppino had a bit of an odor upon being served to me during a recent visit. (It was mainly the mussels, honestly.) The broth was good, as expected - I did enjoy that component. But those sketchy mussels - let's just say that I had an unpleasant visit to the bathroom later that evening. Similarly, we ordered the Sea Bass - and it, too, had a bit of a fishy funk to it. Not ideal! The saving grace here was the dessert - the Warm Butter Cake was a sugary, satisfying winner as always. Def recommend ending your meal with this selection. As we all know, freshness is of the utmost importance when it comes to preparing/serving seafood. I am hoping that this last visit was just a blip on the radar, and that future visits to Nick's will once again exemplify the quality and consistency that I am used to! read more

Best experience ever! We come often and the food is always on point - our favorites are the Cioppino, and the Prime Rib Dip, but everything is delicious. The service is always great too, but today on a busy Mother's Day, I wanted to shout out Francis and Ben. The service was truly outstanding. My water glass was never empty, the food came out at the perfect pace, as we were commenting to ourselves how perfect the service was Francis came to tell us he was off shift but Ben would take good care of us. My family and I had lunch at Nick's on 2nd after a morning outing to the Aquarium of the Pacific. We were able to find some free street parking about 1-2 blocks away in a more residential area. As it was a weekend, we were concerned it would be crowded so on route we called ahead to request a table and they were able to get us to our table right away when we arrived. The menu was quite similar to the Nick's Del Mar. We got the asparagus fries and spinach and artichoke dip for the table. The apps came out relatively quickly and the asparagus fries were as good as I remember, a crispy breading that didn't fall apart and tender asparagus underneath that was cooked perfectly so that it wasn't fibrous. Now that I have to little ones, I selected the meatloaf for my entree knowing that I would be able to share some with them. Despite sharing, I still had some to take back for leftovers! I really enjoyed the flavors on the maple glazed meatloaf and the crispy onions on top really added a nice touch. I also really appreciated the service. As the wind picked up and the sun beamed down, they adjusted the covers around the patio accordingly. I know Nick's is known for their butter cake dessert, but today's was a bit dry actually, which was slightly disappointing and the reason for a 4 star review rather than 5 stars. I came here for a group dinner with some friends who thankfully got 8pm reservations the night before (since that was the earliest they had available). Our server was very attentive and gave us the run-down on specials they had on the menu. My husband got a beer and I had a gin and tonic (which was made very well). We shared the clam chowder which was one of their soups of the day that they said was made from scratch. The chowder was super creamy and delicious. We also shared the prime rib dip sandwich with fries. My husband said that it was one of the best prime rib sandwiches he's ever had. It came with some creamy horseradish and an au jus broth to dip in. The meat was melt-in-your-mouth tender and the bread was soft and warm. Baby Back Pork Ribs Specialty- 5/5: Would definitely recommend this dish. It was a big portion. The meat was really tender. The sauce was good and sweet. Fries had good seasoning. Aged Top Sirloin- 4/5: Preferred the ribs over this, but it was also good. The meat was flavorful, a little bit on the dry side. Came with one onion ring that was really crispy on the outside. I just tried to go there with two small service dogs in a stroller and was told they could not come in in a troller, not even outside, they had to be on the floor. I told the woman with the wart on her face that my dogs were happier in their safe place and she told me no, and no food and no water. We left, and I have a gift card I will likely toss. Nick's on 2nd has quickly become my favorite place to eat in the LBC! Every visit so far has been good - excellent service and well executed/delicious food. I enjoy dining on their open air patio (they have great heaters above when it's cold so you can still dine al fresco) which provides great people watching whole you enjoy your meal. My favorite dish by far is the cioppino. Best I've had outside of San Francisco. It's a generous portion with salmon, cod, clams, mussels, shrimp, and some aromatics in a light but very flavorful tomato based seafood broth. If that wasn't enough they serve it with the best mini sourdough garlic loaf - perfect to dip into the hot, savory broth. I also enjoy their fish as their chefs really know how to perfectly cook a filet of fish without over cooking. Other standouts are the shrimp taquito and fried deviled eggs appetizers. I find it easy and convenient to book a reso in advance via their website through OpenTable. Parking is what it is in Belmont Shore, but we've always been able to find an open metered spot. I've taken several friends here to celebrate birthdays and they make it special with a complimentary dessert and sometimes a card from staff. Minor quibble- my last visit I took a friend to celebrate her bday and indicated it was a special bday occasion on the reservation, but staff failed to recognize it. I probably should have said something to the wait staff, but ended up not wanting to make a fuss. It was perfectly seasoned without being overly salty and every protein was cooked to perfection. Had a small portion of leftovers for the next day and everything still held up so wonderfully. However the potatoes were almost inedible with the amount of salt caked on. Steak orders came overcooked, ordered medium rare and was definitely on the medium side but the place was so busy and didn't want to add to the wait time. Husband actually wasn't able to finish half of the given asparagus spears due to the overload of salt. What a wonderful and refreshing experience we had Wednesday night. We came in for dinner with a reservation and was told they were waiting for a few tables to finish up as they had all ready paid the bill. 10 min later we were still waiting when the GM approached us to say that he was sorry that the other patrons still hadn't left. At that time I asked if there was some place my daughter could sit as she was 8 mo pregnant. Not only did he find us a seat at the bar he also told the bartender that we could order a free appetizer. 15 min later we were told our table was ready and the drinks we had at the bar were being comped. One of my favorite restaurants on Belmont Shore in Long Beach. Food is always consistently good and service is friendly and attentive. The lighting is somewhat dim which makes for a romantic ambience perfect for a date night. My favorite dish is is the Chilean Sea Bass, always fresh, flaky on the outside and buttery on the inside, just perfectly cooked. My hubby loves the deviled eggs and filet mignon. Nick's on 2nd is always a good idea. I have a hard time ordering anything but the Prime Rib Dip because it is so amazing. We tried the butter cake, which was incredible. The staff is always both kind and efficient. They have a lot of different seating options; booths, tables, bar seating and outdoor seating. My only complaint is the amount of flys that were in the restaurant the last time we were there. We were shooing flys the whole time we talked and ate. I think it was from the full length doors being open, but they probably should have been shut considering the amount of flys. read more
