Wow! Walking into this place felt like a cozy, American classic. It felt like a warm and inviting place, I really enjoyed it. I've heard a lot about this place from locals and others, and had to give it a try! The food is really great. We ordered the shrimp taquitos as an appetizer, which were literal whole jumbo- sized shrimp- so delicious! I was recommended the Bistro plate which comes with the Soup of the day, side salad, and a Filet Minot served on a garlic bread. I'm a little pickier when it comes to streak and this one was cooked like a perfect medium. It is also very affordable as well, and you get a surprising amount of good quality food that will leave you feeling satisfied. My boyfriend ordered the Prime Rib Dip, and I have to say this was SLIGHTLY better, it's so simple yet mouth- watering, it literally meltd in your mouth. Crisp Martini- Citrusy & Crisp, Jalapeño Watermelon Margarita- Sweet& Savory. Both great. Our server, Tiffanee, was impressive and great from start to finish. We didn't know what to order and she informed us of the popular favorites as well as her personal favorites (upon request), was so so friendly and provided genuinely impressive service and experiences for us. I decided to give this restaurant a try again. It was a 5/5 this time! We had reservations and our booth was ready on time and we were seared quickly. Service here is always 5 stars - they are truly friendly and kind here from the hostess to the servers. I ordered the tiki mocktail. The coke float part makes the drink a dirty brown but the pineapple foam makes this drink . Taste was interesting. Prime rib dip sandwich is always 10/10 according to my bff. She always get this and is always pleased. The au jus is delicious and the bread is soft. I ordered the bistro plate - the tomato soup had croutons , the steak was cooked perfectly, the salad was crisp and delicious. Fresh and tasty eats! Asparagus fries were fun. They use thickkk asparagus which was perfect for the frying. The ranch that comes with this, mmmm. The sea bass was nice and buttery but not oily. The chicken piccata is HUGE and very crispy. And the butter cake, my goodness!! It is LARGE and rich so definitely shareable and a lot for just 2 people after a full meal. Just excellent. Reserved a table for an early dinner for Mothers Day and received a text message a couple minutes before saying table was ready. Check in with the very friendly staff at the door and were immediately seated on the patio which was nice and relaxing and much quieter than indoors. The server Evan was super friendly and prompt. All staff were well dressed and just great. It was our first time so I went off a few suggestions from past reviewers. We decided to lay off the alcohol after a week of parties, but found the non-alcoholic cocktails amazing, and weren't missing the alcohol at all! I had the burrata salad with added crispy prosciutto (light and refreshing, perfect on a hot day). They both had a cob salad with added steak, which they didn't like so much as it was a bit to mayo tasting instead of blue cheese tasting (neither like mayo, J'adore mayo like cray lol). I love going to Nick's! Never been to the 2nd street location, but decided to go there over the weekend to celebrate an early birthday. The wife and I decided to split a salad. We also ordered the Bistro Plate and the Ribeye Melt Sandwich. Oh man... everything was amazingly delicious! The Bistro Plate was nice. The filet was cooked perfectly! Nice and juicy and seasoned perfectly. The salad was awesome as well. The sandwich was great! But if there was one thing that I would nitpick at is the onion jam they use. It was a tad sweeter than I would have preferred, but it was still a flavor explosion. Very good indeed. Between the ribeye sandwich or the prime rib dip, I think I would choose the prime rib dip. Man, that sandwich was amazing. All in all, even though this location isn't the easiest to find parking, the inside was nice and clean and the server was awesome and attentive. The cioppino was stock full of seafood and the steak was cooked to perfection. The bread for the cioppino was on another level. I've been here so many times, I'm surprised to see that I've never written a review before now. I haven't visited the Manhattan Beach location, but the Long Beach location is relatively small, so I highly recommend making a reservation as the bar fills up quickly. For this visit, I got the blackened fish sandwich- the market fish this day was Mahi Mahi (although I was hoping for Halibut), but the sandwich was amazing. I wanted the market vegetables as my side but they advised that they couldn't make them without butter, so I opted for the fries. I wish they would bring back the Salty Pear martini :( read more

Celebrated my birthday here and chose this spot to show my boyfriend for the first time- he said we probably won't return. It was a super busy night so the hostess let us know that the "table was ready but they are just waiting for the people to get up." We waited about 20 min after our reservation time and were sat. The service was very kind! I added an extra star for the server and the server who helped cover our server while on break. The food was really disappointing though. I recall enjoying their steak awhile back at another location but this one lacked flavor and their medium rare is unlike any medium rare i've ever ordered. But, they did say that was their norm and took my steak back to cook it a bit more. I've never had medium rare steak that was cold and that rare colored in the middle and when it came back it was just more cooked on the outside with the inside not changing much...it was such a small piece of filet that was thick so that could have been the issue. Either way, noted not to order steak how I usually order it at other places because it was incredibly rare if the steak isn't even warm throughout! I'd stick to maybe apps and drinks here since it seemed like a fun location to hangout at the bar. read more

Finally got to try Nick's on 2nd! I attempted a few weekends ago to snag a spot without a dinner reservation and was told the wait would be about an hour. Flash forward to today, I came in tow with reservations and was seated within 5 minutes of arrival. Our server, I think his name was Thomas, was thorough and pleasant, explaining the menu in detail and cracking jokes throughout the dinner service. He also came with great food recommendations, which we considered and ordered the "fun to eat" deviled eggs, prime rib dip, and bistro plate. Every dish was perfectly cooked, truly no complaints. However I think the dishes showcased the skill of the chefs making them, I think if the chef were given more creative freedom to make some new dishes, it would be an absolute game changer! Make sure you make reservations early since this place gets packed on a Friday night. I came here for a group dinner with some friends who thankfully got 8pm reservations the night before (since that was the earliest they had available). Our server was very attentive and gave us the run-down on specials they had on the menu. My husband got a beer and I had a gin and tonic (which was made very well). We shared the clam chowder which was one of their soups of the day that they said was made from scratch. The chowder was super creamy and delicious. We also shared the prime rib dip sandwich with fries. My husband said that it was one of the best prime rib sandwiches he's ever had. It came with some creamy horseradish and an au jus broth to dip in. The meat was melt-in-your-mouth tender and the bread was soft and warm. Sorry to rain on everyone's parade here - especially since I've had good experiences at Nick's in the past! Believe me, I was very surprised to find that the signature Cioppino had a bit of an odor upon being served to me during a recent visit. (It was mainly the mussels, honestly.) The broth was good, as expected - I did enjoy that component. But those sketchy mussels - let's just say that I had an unpleasant visit to the bathroom later that evening. Similarly, we ordered the Sea Bass - and it, too, had a bit of a fishy funk to it. Not ideal! The saving grace here was the dessert - the Warm Butter Cake was a sugary, satisfying winner as always. Def recommend ending your meal with this selection. As we all know, freshness is of the utmost importance when it comes to preparing/serving seafood. My family and I had lunch at Nick's on 2nd after a morning outing to the Aquarium of the Pacific. We were able to find some free street parking about 1-2 blocks away in a more residential area. As it was a weekend, we were concerned it would be crowded so on route we called ahead to request a table and they were able to get us to our table right away when we arrived. The menu was quite similar to the Nick's Del Mar. We got the asparagus fries and spinach and artichoke dip for the table. The apps came out relatively quickly and the asparagus fries were as good as I remember, a crispy breading that didn't fall apart and tender asparagus underneath that was cooked perfectly so that it wasn't fibrous. Now that I have to little ones, I selected the meatloaf for my entree knowing that I would be able to share some with them. Despite sharing, I still had some to take back for leftovers! I really enjoyed the flavors on the maple glazed meatloaf and the crispy onions on top really added a nice touch. I also really appreciated the service. As the wind picked up and the sun beamed down, they adjusted the covers around the patio accordingly. I know Nick's is known for their butter cake dessert, but today's was a bit dry actually, which was slightly disappointing and the reason for a 4 star review rather than 5 stars. Baby Back Pork Ribs Specialty- 5/5: Would definitely recommend this dish. It was a big portion. The meat was really tender. The sauce was good and sweet. Fries had good seasoning. Aged Top Sirloin- 4/5: Preferred the ribs over this, but it was also good. The meat was flavorful, a little bit on the dry side. Came with one onion ring that was really crispy on the outside. The baked potato was huge and definitely will fill you up. Asparagus was okay. Bistro Plate- 4/5: Came with tomato soup, salad, and a petite filet mignon. The filet mignon was very tender.
