Nico at Pier 38 is a fun and casual place. I've been here twice for lunch for fresh fish and it's always been delicious. Fish cooked perfectly not overcooked. Once you enter Nico, you're able to order at the cash register and then you can seat yourself for lunch. They give you a buzzer, and when your buzzer goes off your food is ready. You pick up your food at the counter. Drinks are self serve from the soda fountain. They had live music last time I was there for lunch, which was really nice. read more

This review was written in chronological order as I experienced it. At lunch you walk it to a lively atmosphere but it's dirty. Trash on the floors, bathrooms unkempt, men's bathroom had rolls of toilet paper across the floors. You order at the front and they give you a buzzer to pick up the food. The person taking the orders was nice and helpful, You pick your own table. There was live music which was great and a great view of the pier. You sit in plastic outdoor chairs. This place just had a crazy mix of outdoor park atmosphere and restaurant. The problem for all of it is the price you pay. For this price, you just expect more. I ordered a Mai Tai and watched the bartender make it. A large glass with not even a shot of rum. It was like drinking juice for $15.00. All the food is served in to go containers, again, very lunch at the park. But then you taste the food. Everything was excellent. Ahi tuna, gumbo, seafood chowder, calamari, salad, everything. Came here for lunch on a weekday after the rave reviews from our Uber driver. The location is nice, with a lot of space and an outdoor area that was peaceful. We were greeted by a very friendly hostess as soon as we walked in. You can order in the restaurant or you can also order at the fish market side where you can get poke and bring it over. We decided to go over to the fish market to check out the poke. We got the Hawaiian Plate (Friday's only) which had Pork Lau Lau, Kalua Pig, Lomi Salmon, and Poi, and also poke bowl. The person behind the poke counter was not friendly, but the deli cashier was nice. There was so much poke to choose from! It all looked beautiful. We got two scoops of ahi deluxe and one ginger style poke. The person behind the counter misheard our order and gave us two scoops of ginger style and one scoop of deluxe. When we pointed it out, she dumped a portion of the ginger style back in its tub behind the counter. It already touched our hot rice so not sure if that's normal or not. We sat outside and enjoyed the calm sunny day. The lomi lomi salmon was overly salty and the kalua pig was dry; I liked the pork lau lau the most. The amount of rice and kalua pork were massive. It was my friend's first time trying poi and he thought it was okay. I wanted us to try a Hawaiian meal together at least once during the trip, and this was good enough. Overcharged-check your statements. My husband ordered two drinks at the bar and left a tip, when I checked our bank statements later we were overcharged by $67. I called twice at night, left a message and no one returned my call. Called back the next day, was transferred to accounting and they didn't return my call so I called again. I spoke to the GM, and was told she would look into it. I emailed accounting the next day and was given a refund for the difference back with no explanation other than it was a mistake, and was told that it was settled the night prior with a small apology that the night manager should have followed up. I'm not sure how a mistake that large was made on a tip line. ($3 we left vs. the $70 charged). The host Nadia that I spoke to was helpful and kind but the rest of the experience left a bad taste in my mouth. If I'm overcharged that much, I shouldn't have to call multiple times and email over three days just to get a resolution. Next time I'll just go to the credit company and dispute. It's a bummer because it was nice the establishment was dog friendly, but the resolution's customer service was poor. read more

Locals ! Come here for lunch, it's served till 4pm and prices are reasonable. I always get the furikaki seared ahi and fish n chips. You need to place your order at the first cashier counter, given a beeper and then you can pick up your food at the main counter. This restaurant came highly recommended by multiple locals during our trip. We came here on our last night and it was a disappointing meal to end the trip on. The house salad was great and fresh. The homemade dressing was great too! We also ordered the orange chicken appetizer and it was just ok. The sauce was good, but the meat was chewy. I got the Furikake Pan-Seared Ahi as my entree and was so disappointed. The meat itself was not tender or flaky, it was tough and chewy. It didn't taste fresh at all. Aside from that, there was no additional flavor to the meat. It had sesame seeds on it but was very bland and dry overall. The brown rice was really hard (like eating rocks). I ended up dipping my ahi in the orange chicken sauce to get a better flavor. We got a scoop of ice cream at the end. I asked if it was possible to get two flavors or two scoops and was told no. The waitress was friendly. The atmosphere of the restaurant reminded me of a sports bar. They had good live music as well. Overall, I don't recommend this restaurant. Had Nico's on my list to try while in Hawaii and it did not disappoint! Rolled in for dinner just after 6pm, and even though it was busy, we were seated immediately with a great view of the harbor and fishing boats. We ordered the Furikake Ahi Tuna, the Dijon Roasted Salmon salad, Crab cake Sandwich and Keiki pasta. Dinner arrived shortly after, it was all delicious and no one left hungry. Prices were fair and the seafood was literally fresh off the boat. There was also live music! Would definitely try them for lunch too. Nico's is about 3 miles from Waikiki, but easy to get to if you have a vehicle or hire a ride. What was really nice was that we were enjoying a delicious dinner, with great service and a view instead of standing in line for mediocre experience at some restaurant in Waikiki. If you're looking for great seafood, do yourself a favor and head to Nico's. You won't go wrong. read more

And if I'm being honest, I'm all for the intrigue of fresh seafood caught daily and hacked up for me to selfishly chow down. THE FOOD ELABORATION. - Fried Ahi Belly | Parts of the ahi belly were really soft and other parts quite firm. And having perfectly crispy deep fried anything sitting in something saucy like spicy lomi tomato salsa is no bueno. I would recommend asking for the salsa on the side. Speaking of sides, the macaroni salad was wonderfully creamy and flavorful. The rice was perfectly sticky and paired well with the fried ahi belly's oceanic flavors. THE DRINKS DRUNK. - Hawaiian Mule | Yessss. The liliko'i puree was sweet and made this mule so enjoyable to drink. Highly recommend. - Maui Brew Co. Big Swell IPA | Not an overpowering IPA. Refreshing. THE VIBE EVOCATION. Modern beach vibes. Huge bar centrally located and a boat suspended above where lighting fixtures hang from it. The staff were pretty diligent in making sure tables were cleared and cleaned quickly. And the best part? Sitting near the all the fishing boats. THE PARKING AFFAIR. Free parking is adjacent to the fish market. The area is a gravel/dirt lot. I'm sure there are other areas to park, but found this to be closest to the entrance. THE RETURN QUANDARY. I had to bring the rest back to my hotel because it was just so much food! The only downside is their Togo food containers. I went at lunch and didn't wait too long to order and get my food, maybe 10 minutes tops. Lots of parking and its free! Good selection of seafood dishes and local favorites. I had the fried ahi belly with spicy lomi salsa. Excellent combination. The not too spicy salsa goes well with the fried fish. I've never had ahi belly fried before, usually with shoyu sauce. Came by on a random Monday night when my partner had a strong urge to try their Ahi Belly dish. We were given a buzzer to hold on to while we waited. The view was nice of the pier but definitely better during the day. Unfortunately, they also have a separate menu for dinner, which does that offer the ahi belly and when we inquired about it, one of the waiters (the one that walked us to our seat) and they said they could ask. However, they did not and we asked again to our actual waiter and he stated (without asking) that they couldn't serve it, but that the fish bites were a semi alternative. Since we have already waited and have gotten seated, we just decided to go with the fish bites appetizer and I ordered the catch of the day monday special (refer to specials menu image I attached below) The fish bites dish was honestly a really good portion and pairing it with rice was enough as a meal for my partner. He was pleased and that's all that mattered for me. My catch of the day dish was delicious, the lobster bisque sauce was creamy and paired well with the swordfish and pasta along with the garlic bread. I felt that the dish could've been more satisfying if it was a bit saucier. Additionally if the parmesan crust was seared for a bit longer on the swordfish, I feel that it could've helped to bring the flavor of it out more. Ambiance: - the outdoor chairs are oddly shorter than the table, just sits a bit awkwardly in my opinion. - the outdoor lightly is also VERY warm and yellow, not a bad or good thing, just something I noticed immediately. Nico's at Pier 38 is one of my favorite casual places to go for live entertainment. You can check their monthly schedule and find out who's playing at lunch time from 12:00 to 2:00 or in the evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The restaurant is an open-air restaurant but it's all covered for inclement weather and there's a huge free parking lot. About the menu, there is a great selection of fresh fish, poke, specials like ribeye or maybe a crab stuffed fish but always something new. As for the tried and true specials, be sure to get the Poke sampler which would include three different poke and maybe a smoked fish as well. I like to sit close to the musician so just be sure to ask the hostess for that seating or maybe something by the rail for a sunset view. Definitely recommended. read more

Nico's was actually my first restaurant meal when I first moved/arrived on island. I do enjoy taking out of towners here for the vibe and the food. A lot of their dishes are pretty food, but my latest favorite was the fish special. It was like a Mahi Mahi filet but in this creamy dill caper sauce that was pure *chef's kiss*. I also really like their mashed potatoes as a side, and green beans which are super garlicky. The steak was also good, and fries although those were cold. They tend to always have live performers, and they've all been really good! Our servers have always been pretty solid. You can't make reservations and it's first come first serve with a table buzzer system. Parking can be hard to get as the lot fills up fast. read more

Revisiting Nico's is like revisiting a old friend. It's been around forever and sometimes it just slips your mind to revisit them. Lots of free parking nearby and they have a beautiful view of the pier. I like that it's both indoor and outdoor and most of all - dog friendly! Ordering was simple at the front , then you get a buzzer and pick any open seat. There was live music the day I went for lunch. It's pretty much self service as you also pick up your food and bus your own table at the end. I love the vibes and the pricing was good too. This is for the sashimi platter. Went in and asked about ordering for Christmas. Was told it would be about $80+$10 for ordering day before Christmas. When I picked up the platter, the cost was $140. I paid, and then wondered about the price, so we called and was told it was market price. That is fine of course, but it would have been nice to be told that when we placed the order. We even offered to pay early and the correct thing would be "I'm sorry, you cannot pay now since the platter cost is determined on that day". Was never told that, so the cost was unexpected. We came for a late dinner on a Wednesday night. Sitting on the patio was nice, although to see the water and boats we had to look over other tables and patrons. The chairs were the same cheap, plastic umbrella table ones you can get at the supermarket and were much too low for the round table where we sat. To eat comfortably we had to stack and sit on a second cheap chair and wobble throughout dinner. My wife had the fish and chips which used fried swordfish and regular fries; it was very tasty. I had the bouillabaisse which sucked; it was barely warm, watery, and not very flavorful. The fragments of fish in the soup were dry and tasteless; probably leftovers they were able to get rid of in the kitchen. And the two mussels were overcooked. When I expressed disappointment to the waiter and asked for a little more bread (instead of the soggy sourdough), he made sure to charge me an extra $4 for a small piece of soggy garlic bread. Portion sizes were not generous and prices were much too high for the poor service and quality. read more

Shrimp scampi came recommended, and the portion could've easily fed two with lots of shrimp provided, but I will say not the most flavorful scampi I've ever had. Mai tai was classic, not anything to say good or bad. Lots of seating options, all relatively with an open outdoor concept so if you're outside and it starts to drizzle, just hope it's not going for an angle but the view at sunset was gorgeous. read more

Overall 4 stars: The best casual/outdoor restaurant with the freshest seafood! Always a go to when I am craving fresh fish or seafood. Food 4 stars: On this spur of the moment date night dinner we ordered off of their specials board. First we got the crab arancini appetizer which was light and crunchy on the outside filled with gooey melty goodness in the middle. The sauce and arancini were spot on! I would recommend getting this if it's on the menu as it has an upscale feel. We then shared an entree of lemongrass clams with coconut rice. The lemongrass clams were very tasty but the clams were a bit on the tiny side. But it did match perfectly with the yummy coconut rice. We did get some desserts this time, I believe we got the salted caramel cake and some kind of chocolate bar. Though the sweets were delicious, both were a bit heavy for me and not very memorable. Service 4 stars: Nico's has their seating system done efficiently! We did go a little before the dinner rush and was seated promptly. Our server was nice and we got our food pretty quickly for a busy restaurant. Not 5 star service but very good for a casual restaurant. Ambiance 4 stars: Nico's has a stunning view at sunset with all the beautiful sunset colors in the sky. I would definitely recommend going before sunset so that you can experience this romantic view. The food here was not good, although the service was fine and atmosphere overlooking the harbor very nice. Make note that the lunch specials are listed on their website along with the prices but dinner specials are not listed nor are the prices. I ordered the special appetizer which was listed as ribs but turned out to be fish ribs (not pork) and their ish rib cages. Was OK but not what I was expecting and there was hardly any meat to speak of. I ordered the fish and chips as recommended by our waiter as my entree. The fish was suspiciously rectangle shaped like a large fish stick and the texture was tough and rubbery. Aoli sauce was nice but no tartar sauce offered. The fries were served barely warm to cool and obviously had been sitting under a heating lamp for some time. Draft Stella beer was cold but flat as a door mat! My partner had a burger with the same barely edible cold fries and the patty was once again, as it seems to be so common here in Hawaii, seasoned to death and salty as the Salton Sea. We ordered two desserts and they were both served cold and clearly had been recently taken out of a freezer and barely had sufficient time to even thaw. Not a good sign. Verdict....would I go back.....naw, the food was simply bad. It's a pity as I was hoping this could be a potential regular place to eat at. read more

They had a live musician playing guitar and singing and the food was delicious. They even comped my desert for my birthday! I ordered the fish sandwich that was showcased on Diner's, Drive-in's and Dives and enjoyed every bite.
