I met a friend here for dinner before a show. I was able to make a reservation about 2 days beforehand, so that was a huge plus. We were seated at 6pm and were out by 7:15pm, which was fantastic. I had the regular pho and my friend had the vegetarian pho, which is made with mushroom broth. We both enjoyed our pho a lot. It's not the most authentic pho I've ever had, but it was very good and hit the spot with the cold weather outside. We decided to split both desserts, and I loved the sticky rice from the mango sticky rice. The mangos were perfectly ripe and super sweet. Service was great too. Obao is an excellent Vietnamese and Thai restaurant, if you're near Midtown Manhattan. They do take walk-ins, but due to space, I'd suggest making reservations (especially on a Friday night). Wonderful food served quickly. They put their own twist on the dishes. Favorites starters were the crispy spring rolls and the dumplings. Favorite main dishes include the crab fried rice and the shrimp fried rice. I ate at the 9th avenue location. Had several wheelchair guests in attendance. Ambiance: I've been here twice on both weeknight and weekend. My favorites are always a reservation on a weeknight. The place is always packed but you always run the risk of rushed service if a restaurant is too busy. I personally prefer going with one other person rather than a big party for this one. Of all 3 starters I would say it was my favorite in flavor. It was perfectly juicy and the meat inside was perfect! Main Dishes: Pad See Ew, a classic go to for many is 100% worth the order. The noodles just absorbed so much flavor from the meet and veggies with a generous portion as well. I don't believe at all that all Pad See Ew are created equal, I can be quite picky with this dish. I was not disappointed. Noodle, to protein to veggie ratio in the dish was just right. Pho Bo: When it comes to Pho, I always get a bit skeptical. I'm always more comfortable in Pho restaurants than other places that offer more on the menu. This dish is Michelin recommended. I respect the Michelin recommendations religiously, so I wanted to see what the hype was about. This dish is all about the broth. If you're a pho lover and appreciate the notes in the broth and what it takes to make it. I suggest giving this a go. There's a beautiful earthiness, richness and umami to it. With all the fresh veggies like sprouts, basil, lime etc. It hits home with the noodles al dente, and the beef. IF however, you are someone who just thinks of pho as soup, which is fine too. Then it may be worth exploring other dishes. The pad thai also never fails and its just PACKED with flavor and peanuty goodness. Overall Service: I would say all dishes were very good! I didnt give it a 5 because I have yet to find the dish that I feel like could only find in Obao. It was legit great for its wonderful servers, honoring reservations, intimate ambiance and equipped with a beautiful little bar area as well. Food was definitely great. Missing entrees, confused glances, and a tea order that got lost somewhere in the sonic boom of DJ Disaster downstairs. We've been to OBAO before and remember it being better--so maybe it was just a perfect storm of bad vibes and worse playlists. We got the classic Pad Thai, which was topped with a poached egg. I found the noodles to be a bit softer than I'd like, but the taste was on point! We also got the Steak Bun (Vermicelli Noodles), which my friend thought was ok, but I thought it paired nicely with the fish sauce. I decided to try out the Pad Thai and the Crab Fried Rice, as these usually are dishes that are solid at most Thai places. These weren't too spicy and the flavors were pretty solid, although they were a bit pricey (maybe not by NY standards though lol). The portion sizes were pretty decent at least, and while it was not too far off from other thai food I've had it was still a good meal and I enjoyed going there. I also tried their mojito for a drink, which was quite aesthetic and pretty refreshing to have. Couldn't decide on what to eat on a Wednesday evening. Was originally thinking of a restaurant in Times Square, but the group ended up heading to Hell's Kitchen just a few blocks from where the hotel is. One of my work colleagues had made a last minute reservation for 8 of us as we were all walking out the door. She had mentioned that Happy Hour is going on right now and they could seat 8 of us right away! Obao offers HH up until 6pm and we had just under an hour to be seated and enjoy good food and good drinks. All of us were starving and the company was just right for a few drinks! When we all arrived, the female server had menus for all of us and quickly started taking drink orders. Surprisingly all drinks came out at the same time, nice and refreshing that it hit the spot. I was very impressed with presentation and how fast all of our food is delivered, almost as close to how pictures were on the menu. Once we were done, I needed to rinse off my sticky fingers. Restrooms were on the same floor upstairs. I'd definitely come back again, perhaps come back earlier for HH or a night cap next time.
