If you're looking for some authentic Korean sausage (aka soondae) either steamed and served with side dishes or cooked into a soup, this is the place. I usually get the Korean sausage soup with lettuce. It's served with a bowl of rice, brined shrimp, and two types of kimchi - the more common cabbage kimchi and one made from daikon radish. I personally prefer the radish kimchi with this type of hearty soup. Some other menu items include the sausage soup with various cuts of meat such as liver, ear, and also blood cake. I'm not particularly a fan since these cuts of meat tend to have more of that iron taste. They also serve beer and soju, and even have some nice combo deals that include two meals and a bottle of soju. The service is friendly if a little slow at times, since it's usually just the nice ajumma working the register and waiting the tables. Comes out to an average of 10-12 bucks per person, including tax and tip. The food is an excellent value, authentic, and extremely satisfying. Great deal for lunch or for dinner. Once you're done stuffing yourself, you can go across the plaza to Jin's Bakery to get yourself some delicious Korean pastries for dessert! read more

One of my fondest memories of my grandmother was when I was 13 years old visiting Korea for the first time since my immigration here 7 years ago. She took my brother and me to an open area marketplace where there was a food court with ahujmmas (older women) preparing food at their allocated tent location. We sat down at the bench not knowing what was for lunch. The kind owner took out a steaming plump of what looked like sausage from the steamer behind her and sliced it up. I tentatively tried a piece and it was pure bliss. That was when I tried soondae (Korean sausage) for the very first time. Between the three of us I think we consumed three sausages. We were also given other parts of the pig too such as the ears which were also tasty. Well this place brought back memories of my first experience with soondae. Many years after that first time I found out there are different ways to prepare soondae such as spicy stir fry and in soup. You can also get just a soondae plate or if you are feeling really adventurous you can order the everything plate which has the offals like stomach, liver, heart and cartilage. They also have a spicy soondae option. This restaurant is totally Korean where everything is written in Korean. Only thing in English is the description of the menu items. So it is probably best to come with someone who knows the Korean language of the descriptions are not enough. Be aware though they mostly have soondae dishes with a few other dishes like chicken katsu, ttukboki (spicy ricecake), chicken feet, and soontofu. There appeared to be only two main dishes on the menu - blood sausage (soondae) and beef soup - and the rest of the items were variations of the above (i.e. soondae soup, soondae plate...then spicy beef soup, not-spicy beef soup), as well as some noodle dishes. I don't think they're doing $5.99 lunch specials anymore, but most of their dishes are under $10 so it's still pretty affordable. I stuck with the standard and got yukgaejang, the spicy shredded beef soup. $8.99 and it arrived in a HUGE stone pot and was loaded with everything beef, egg, sprouts, onion, and even a whopping serving of fern. No fillery noodles here, just the way I like it. Only two panchan (seems par for specialty restaurants) - the standard napa and daikon. Not a fan of daikon in general but the napa was really really good - and they were extremely generous in giving refills. I've heard the soondae is good here too, so I may have to try that next time. read more

i only eat soondae with meat combo every time. never tried anything else. my sister ordered tuboki and that was so so. their soondae is best i ever had. best in the world.(i grew up in seoul btw) and i am over 50 so "best" should convey how good it is. very moist and perfect texture. i would say it is about 100x better than the one down the street... anyone local should know who i am talking about. you cannot get more better! read more

My husband and I went into this new restaurant trying out the new addition to this fairly new plaza. It's a hybrid between traditional Korean restaurant and "pojangmacha" (street tent foods). We went at the tail end of the lunch around 1 PM. They don't have a menu, so you do have to look at the posters on the wall. That's more "pojangmacha" style. I didn't mind, but I do feel a little bad for those who aren't used to this style of ordering. We ordered the lunch special for $5.99. I wasn't sure what kind of "daenjang jjigae" I ordered, but it was very vegetarian. I thought it was pretty good, but I wasn't sure if it was worth $5.99 since it didn't have anything that would put it at such value. My husband ordered the same thing, but his had some beef ribs. His was definitely more worth it at $5.99. I suppose my dish was supposed to off-set his. However, I couldn't help but to feel a little ripped off... especially since I wasn't quite sure what was in it. It was my laziness to ask that got in the way. Since there's no menu, I couldn't discriminate ahead of time as to the difference between all the lunch specials. One thing I really liked was that the server told me that they don't add MSG. Woohoo! One bad thing was that our "banchan" (side dishes) were few compared to the older couple who sat next to us about 15-20 mins after us. They ordered 1 more dish, and that gave them 2 more "banchan." I don't think I've been to a place where they discriminated on who gets how many and type of "banchan." Shouldn't this be complimentary with your meal? They value less as a patron if you should order less? I felt slighted when I noticed this. THEREFORE, THREE stars. It wasn't anything special. I've been coming here for 3 years now. The place is unassuming and tastes great. I personally prefer this over moobongli. They make a delicious spicy stir fried soondae. Having gone to uni close to the stir fry blood sausage mecca in Seoul, I know my stir fries. LA has better Korean food in general but Obok is no second to the soCal offerings. The lady who works the hall is nice and efficient. Side dishes are limited to kimchi, radish cubes and pickled jalapeños but that's all you need. read more

This place is located close to Beque and old place of Jin's Bakery. This is a small place where few seats are available. We went here after looking at several places for Korean Sausage. I couldn't find any place that mainly makes Soondae. So we went here at night and there were few people eating. There was only one person working at the dinner time, which looked overwhelmed for her. After ordering for the food, we didn't wait for the food that long because we were the only one who just came in. The one star is for the waitress, who was really nice because when we asked for more water and side dishes, she gave us right away. When we needed more kimchi and the waitress gave us a lot, and I heard owner saying "Don't give the side dishes too much!" The food wasn't good at all seriously. The spicy sausage with meat is mostly big chunky vegetables that I never seen and tasted before. I would never use $15 for this kind of food. Even the worse thing was the attitude of their young male server saying it's the way it is when I complained about the bland taste. Our normal soondae go to isnt open on Sundays, so we ordered from Obok. Soondae is good and portions are pretty big. Soup was a little strong for me, but my partner liked it. Have been to get the SoonDae soup from different place in Santa Clara. Somehow, Google search connects to this place for taking out order. Anyway, my wife pick the SoonDae soup up for family dinner instead of cancelling. The taste of soup is so bland and awful and it reminds me the taste nothing but smell of half way dried dirty towel. It is almost impossible to make this soup this bad because I know there are a lot of good ingredients to make the Soondae and have their own flavors to make a tasteful soup. The regular cabbage kimchi is above average but the raddish kimchi is also so bad that there is no sweetness & crunches at all. Anyway, after few spoons, I & kids decide to pass the dinner but the reminder of bad taste stay in my head all night long till next morning. This is the worst take-out food taste ever in my life and it is so shame to serve this awful food in highly competitive eatery area in Santa Clara. This place specializes in soon dae (Korean blood sausage). The food here tastes great and it's reasonably priced. The signs for the specials on the wall are in Korean, so it's helpful to be able to read. If you can't read, the person working there speaks some English, so you can probably just ask. read more

I am not Korean. My wife isn't either, but she is Asian. We stopped in to this local restaurant to try soondae, the Korean blood sausage. First of all, Ms. Lee (the owner?) is very nice and charming. The restaurant is pretty and clean. I ordered #12, the pork cutlet. It came with purple rice, slaw and yellow radish. As a matter of fact there is a picture above that looks just like my dish. Very tasty. Next time, I might get the sauce on the side. My wife had #6, the soondae with organ meats and vegetables, stir fried. She loved it. I was hesitant because I am not used to eating organ meats. But I must tell you the sausage, the soondae, is superb. There is no meat inside! I can't give you the secret recipe but no meat. Lots of other things with a little beef blood. I was very surprised by the recipe and had no trouble acquiring a taste for this kind of sausage. The side dishes were 3: traditional kimchi (homemade, mild taste, not spicy), radish kimchi (excellent with a bottle of beer) and jalapeno-like peppers that weren't hot. We had a large bottle of beer and let me tell you, there is nothing like Korean comfort food with beer. There are a lot of Korean restaurants in this neighborhood. If you are looking for an authentic, home-style place this just might be the one for you. read more

The WORST food I ever got. I heard lots of good comments so I went there to try the food. But it was the worst quality food and service u can get from the restaurant . They took long time to get my order even tho there was only one customer in the restaurant and dishes they served was not even clean. It had gochugaru, dried peppers, inside the dish and on my spoon. But I was still being nice to ask for new one but they bitch me out with attitude. The food was even worse. It was not even cook properly and had hairs. This place has pretty good Korean food, but the service SUCKS. All 3 times I have been here, that one middle-aged waitress is a b****! She doesn't smile, she practically slams the food down, she doesn't refill water, and she doesn't check up on any tables even ONCE. If you ask her for just one thing, she gets really annoyed.
