Ordered Cuban sandwich, Chicken Pie and two Potato Balls along with a some extra green salsa. The Cuban was the best I've had, the pork seasoned just right, the ham and pickles topped it off, yummilicious... The Chicken Pie was made with flaky pastry dough so good, I'm kicking myself for not ordering a pastry! In to the balls, those gorgeous golden rounds deep fried balls of meat and potatoes. Great little bakery owned a small business owner and offering delicious goods. From bake goods, empanadas, coffee, and pastries, there's so many options to choose from. My experience was great, the worker recommended me options to try and the seasonal flavor of the month. I went with the classic beef chicken and seafood paella empanadas and they didn't disappoint. They also come with sauces and the orange was went well with everything. Next time I'll try the coffee. I did also take home a tres leche cake and it was moist and good. After sampling a variety of items, I'll definitely be back for more! Potato Balls: Large, cheesy, meaty, potato goodness! These fried potato balls are bigger than Porto's and dare I say are even better as they not only have savory beef but also an ooey-gooey melted cheese inside. For $3/each they are worth it. Empanadas: Obra has a wide variety of empanadas and we had a hard time deciding which ones to get. We ended up sampling three of them: the beef, Cuban and chicken curry. All of them had a flaky crust and warm savory filling. My favorite was the chicken curry, with its spiced savory filling. The empanadas also came with a mild salsa and spicy mayo sauce. Life hack: Dip your potato ball in these sauces - you won't regret it. Obra gets extra points too as they label their empanadas, making it easy to find and eat the different flavors. Guava Strudel: Dusted with powdered sugar, this pastry had a flaky buttery outside and sweet guava jam inside. It was good, but my standard is still Porto's version. Parking is a cinch as Obra is in a strip mall with a dedicated parking lot. We went on a Saturday around lunch time and it seemed quite popular especially with locals. This is a very challenging review to write. On the one hand, OBRA does many well but the shortcomings detract from the overall experience. The food at OBRA is generally great, assuming they have something to sell you when you get there. The potato balls absolutely live up to the hype and are superior to Porto's, but they need to be because while they are bigger, they cost much more per piece and you are limited to the number you may buy. The jalapeno empanada was fantastic, the beef empanada was savory and nostalgic but the breakfast empanada was dry and uninteresting. And then you leave OBRA thinking about what you did not get to have. Two hours after opening, there were no more pastries, the number of empanada flavors available dwindled and the kitchen was closed so I was unable to try the cuban sandwich I made the trip down for. Whether social media interaction is bought or obtained organically, I believe it's a businesses responsibility to make sure it is able to meet the increased demand that will be brought their way. Judging from other reviews, the long lines at OBRA aren't unusual. But as the great Omar says and to keep with the Porto's comparisons, if you come at the king, you best not miss. No matter the day or line, the king always has pastry and sandwiches. read more

Finally tried this place today and it did not disappoint. We got jalepeno fingers, Empanadas, and Gaucho chicken. Loved the chicken! It was so tender and tasty with the chimichurri. Went in at about 8:30am this morning and there were signs that said out or sweet products or something to that effect. The cases were totally empty. The empanadas were all just thrown in another case in the center with no labels showing what they were. Also had signs stating they are out of everything. It was 8:30am!!. Honestly it resembles a business that is going to close the doors soon. When I walked in one of the employees rudely said I will be with you shortly. Looking around it was clear they are super unorganized. It does not seem they are out of items as much as just a poorly run business. Very mis-managed. The place was a mess. There was only 1 customer so trying to say they are sold out just does not make sense. I would be surprised if they are still in business at the end of the year. read more

Every few weeks I meet an old friend for lunch. We catch up on the happenings in each others life and enjoy different foods. Obra was his selection. Looking at the on-line menu I was laser focused on having the seafood empanada. I was disappointed to learn this was a 'seasonal' item and not available. Hmmm. Not a good start. My fallback selection was the Cuban sandwich. This sandwich was so good I forgot about the 'seasonal' seafood empanada. As for seating, there are 3 very small tables outside. Saw this place on TikTok and decided to try it out. The video had 400k likes so I wanted to visit it before I left. I got the potato cheese ball and chicken empanadas, which is what they are famous/well known for. However, I was pretty disappointed given the hype. The empanada was average, and taste like any other empanada from any Mexican bakery. I'm from Houston and also Mexican so I wanted to love it, but I didn't. It was also dry and $5 for one. The potato ball was good, just not giving the 'WOW' factor of it all. Pretty cheap for how filling it is tho, so that is nice. My boyfriend enjoyed it! We purchased some cookies. They were like five dollars each. They were not good at all. They were oily and tasted bad. I literally wanted to go back and return them, but didn't find it worth the time to drive down there and wait in line, just ended up tossing them out. Would not recommend.. don't waste your time... I came here for a Yelp elite event a week ago. I'm ashamed I didn't write my review until now. I feel like the amount of offerings was amazing. I ordered beef and sausage empanadas, potato ball, mini fruit tart and unsweetened iced tea! I enjoying eating and drinking everything! My favorite was the beef empanada. I loved the beef and potatoes in it and the breading was amazing! I liked the red stamp on each empanada indicating what empanada it was. The mini fruit tart was interesting because it had whipped cream in it and I'm used to custard. There's some tables and chairs outside to enjoy your food and drink once you purchase in the store. The empanadas are delicious and worth every penny at 14 for the price of a dozen. Yum!!! The beef/potato, chicken and beef curry, chicken and veggie empanadas were all delicious. Served a family of four for dinner generously and with leftover for snacks. Also had the apple turnover and coffee/latte which was also delicious. This place is very good, but not wait 1 hour and 30 minutes good. Skip the coffee, get the lentil soup. Now the reason I'm giving 3 stars is only because of the service. To be fair there is only a few working in the front because its a small shop and I'd have an attitude as well if there is no organized system to get the food out asap and deal with the 1+ hour line. However when it's not busy I still get the same vibe. Not to mention they are limiting some orders and only selling empanadas, potato balls (up to 4 per customer), and drinks. Not sure if it was just the hours or they started doing it because of how busy it gets. This is a charming spot in the the east Long Beach area. I felt a home-vibe feeling as soon as I walked in.  The server was sweet, friendly and helpful. Their spicy potato and breakfast empanadas are delicious.  The dipping sauce that comes with it is good too. The potato ball is the perfect side--light, crispy and flavorful. As a flavored coffee kinda girl, I highly recommend their Tres Leches Latte.  It is just perfectly sweet and great pick-me-up. I will definitely be returning. read more

There is minimal seating outside of the bakery Food: Tried the Beef and potato empanada, chicken empanada, and jalapeno, onion and cheese. The beef was definitely the best out of the three. Good flavor, ample filling. The dough is soft but crisp around the egdes. The chicken was good too, had a bit of curry and spice to it so it was enjoyable. The onion/cheese/jalapeno was just okay. It was lacking in jalapeno and cheese and had a more prominent onion flavor. Each empanada is about $3 and change. Not too bad for the size and quality. Service: Super friendly and quick. We stood staring at the delicious empanadas deciding which to order, unfortunately that's as far as we got. There were four women behind the counter one was conducting inventory, the second one filling orders, the third was filling small containers with salsa and I can't remember what the fourth one was doing. The point is we stood there patiently waiting to be served. We watched those girls interact with each other as though we weren't even waiting. Hence we walked out of the establishment. My review is basically based on customer service, which was nonexistent. The only one who is justified and not attending us is the one filling orders everyone else displayed poor customer service. Treat your customers with respect and that customer will refer other customers to you. The service was great! Very friendly staff and a welcoming environment. It's a small bakery, not a very sit down kind of restaurant, more of a to-go place. We ordered the Ropa Vieja Empanada (one of the beef empanadas), Seafood Paella Empanada (a seasonal empanada), Breakfast Empanada, and the Beef Potato Ball. The Ropa Vieja was flavorful and the crust was soft and pillowy, the beef was cooked perfectly, I'd rate it an 8.5/10. The Seafood Paella was not our favorite. It didn't taste very fresh, very fish heavy in flavor. We could mostly taste the squid, and it reminded us of the taste of the stuffed clams from the supermarket, 2/10. The breakfast empanada was solid, a bit dry and mostly tasted like sausage, 5/10. The beef potato ball was by far our favorite. The outside was crunchy and the inside was pillowy soft. The beef, cheese, and mashed potato flavor was heavenly, 10/10. The green salsa was fresh but there was not much flavor. I believe the orange sauce was a chipotle sauce. It was good but it didn't exactly go with the food we bought. Overall we'd go again, although we would probably just buy the beef empanadas and potato ball again. Obra Bakery has some of the best empanadas and potato balls on this side of town. The empanadas come in a variety of options from savory to sweet!!!! Don't forget to grab one of their coffees as well. They conjure up a nice brew. In fact, as I author this review, I am thinking given the option between going to Porto's or Obra, I would take Obra's.
