We wound up here after the original place our party leader had chosen turned out not to have seating, but I was really glad we did! First thing I noticed was the smell. I'd spent a non-insignificant amount of time in Hong Kong in my life, and that was the first thing I remembered when I smelled the delicious smells in this place. They have the nice big round tables with the spinny thing on top (ok so I'm not a dim sum expert, but I've had a good amount), and menus with pictures on them for those of us who know what we like but aren't great with what it's called. The food includes typical Cantonese cuisine with and additional selection of some Chiuchow dishes. The food was done quite well with everything tasting pretty good. If I could give 6 stars I would. Ocean Bo is my #1 dim sum spot in the SGV. I drive 30 mins from the IE at least once a month. They are consistent and delicious! There might be bigger dim sum menus out there but Ocean Bo has everything you need, and what they offer they do well. We always get the shu mai and har gow of course, but the sharks fin is my favorite! We also get the spare rib, shrimp rice roll, BBQ pork baked bun, and soy sauce chow mein. The perfect brunch! The dim sum pieces are a good size, juicy, and flavorful. I'm a dessert girly and egg tart snob, and let me tell you Ocean Bo's egg tarts are elite. No one gets the flaky crust right like they do! The egg custard is perfectly cooked, soft and melts in your mouth. I get 2 orders lol, and also 2 orders of mala cake to bring home (it reheats really well). These desserts at the end of the meal with hot tea, DROOLING! There can be a wait on a busy weekend at peak times (maybe 10am-12pm) but it's not usually too bad. The most I've personally waited is 20 mins. If there's too much of a wait I'll just get in the to-go line (moves quickly but you gotta be ready and know what you want) and bring it home to enjoy. Went pretty late in the day so couldn't try the usual stuff but the stuff that's was remaining tasted pretty good. They ran out of shumai but they had "shark fin" shumai which was good. I don't think there was anything even remotely related to shark fin in the shumai or at least I couldn't taste it ‍ Their pork and shrimp rice rolls were solid! Also tried their thin stir fry noodles which just tasted like chow mein. I wouldn't get the noodles again. Decided to come here on Father's Day because my dad was craving dim sum for his day. I actually called first around 10:30 and they said it's too busy and I'll have to wait in line for my order. So many people in line for take out and people were also dining in and served first without a wait. When I finally got near the register the service was pretty quick but the workers seemed very overwhelmed since it was packed. I was looking at the selection of dim sum and I didn't realize the line moved up just a little and the female employee with the pink hat in front of me yelled hello! And gestures for me to move along lol. I was thinking not so nice but then I remembered where I was. Another male employee told my son hello! Because he was blocking the counter the waiter was trying to get past. Instead of saying excuse me , they say hello cause it's easier to remember and say when trying to get someone's attention. This has been my go to dim sum togo place. There is a parking lot for your connivence and plenty of tables for those that want to dine in. As for takeout, there are markers on the ground on where to stand. The ladies working behind the counter are quick, so you better know what you want! They take card and cash :) Of all the dim sum I've had here, the recommended must haves, the bbq pork pastries, pineapple buns with custard, shrimp har gow and pork shui mai. The bbq pork pastries have a nice balance between sweet and salty. It's always been my favorite to get during dim sum and this place fulfills the craving. Although there isn't a ton of pork in the pastry, it's still quite delicious. The pineapple buns with custard , one word... DELICIOUS! If you get lucky, you might get the ones that are freshly baked and have a nice pineapple bun top. The shrimp har gow (comes in 4 pieces) surprisingly hasn't been my favorite at dim sum. But this place changed my mind on this dish. The flavor and the large shrimp makes it a 10/10. Plus the exterior clear wrap isn't hard like other places so that's a plus. The pork shui mai (comes in 5 pieces), so good! It also has shrimp in it and fits the cravings. Other notable choices are the 1000 year old egg and pork porridge and short ribs rice. The porridge is a little salty but there is a ton of pork and egg in it. And the porridge has a great consistency, not watery like other places. Plus for the price, it's worth it! The short rib rice was also pretty good, especially if you want short ribs and a chicken feet without getting two separate dim sum dishes it's a good deal. It's pretty large and will definitely fill you up. Only sad thing is, they charge for hot sauce that you normally see on the dim sum tables. COVID-19: Social distancing is enforced at this establishment. All of the staff wears a mask. All customers are expected to wear a mask too. The staff also wear gloves. There are some hand sanitizers available for customers to use. This place is available for take outs and has no outdoor seating available with limited capacity. They are also sanitizing in between customers. While I was grabbing my food from this establishment today, I asked if they had any special offers and they weren't offering any at the moment. They currently don't have happy hour. They also do not allow pets in their establishment. Parking: The parking lot is pretty big, but the spaces are pretty small. My car got dinged today at this parking lot, so beware! You can always park on the street if you don't want to park in the lot. Lots of street parking available. I came to Ocean Bo at 10AM on a Sunday, and the lot was already starting to get full, so beware. Food: The food here is so fricken delicious. My favorite is the har gow. So juicy and tasty. You can't go wrong with Ocean Bo's Dim Sum. Staff: Definitely check out the menu and know what you want beforehand. If you go there not knowing what you want or take forever to order, the staff is going to get upset with you because there is usually a long line out the door and they need to hurry to serve everyone. During Covid-19, it is only takeout and they are limiting a few customers at a time. I went in during a non-busy hour, so there was no wait for me. The dim sum is fresh, though the craft of these items are just looking okay. All the items taste good, but it really looks like fast food dim sum. I guess I was expecting more restaurant style presentation, as Ocean Bo normally is a dine-in restaurant. I used to eat dim-sum here regularly, and have highly recommended many to this place. Post pandemic, the food quality is slowly in decline. I don't mind when businesses put up prices to cover for the mad regulations forced on them by bureaucrats who'd never run businesses before, but when the business puts up prices but drop their food quality, I get upset. The beef balls are now basically glops of starch, no visible cilantro or beef. Due to lack of real meat, it collapsed. It is so sorry-looking, I think they need to rename it. See picture. The chicken feet, the siu mai, bbq pork buns, seafood rolls, pork ribs, noodles and sticky rice are borderline ok. The starch ratio has increased tremendously, and I am guessing that they got a good deal on salt as most of the items listed above are saltier than normal. I picked some up yesterday for a mountain picnic. It was the perfect fix, in some nice cool weather. The owner is a Chaozhounese (also known as Teochew) family who owns another Chinese restaurant on Atlantic Ave in the city of Monterey Park.
