Okamoto uses chicken thighs cut up into pieces, which is marinated with a soy sauce blend marinade, then dipped into potato starch powder and deep fried until golden. :)

I've ordered from Okamoto kitchen twice during this global pandemic and it's about to be a third time, today. Before that. I've been there for E3 last year, stops at Little Tokyo from time to time, the Persona 5 art exhibit event and countless years at AX I regretfully didn't order for being ignorant and labeling them "a generic weeb looking truck" Obviously I was wrong. I commend them for updating their weekly schedule every Monday on the website and social media to explain what problems might come up during a GLOBAL PANDEMIC. Running a social media account to let everyone in the know because they care that much about their customers. It's already a tough job as it is working a food truck, keeping up with the orders and having to be the bearer of bad news when food eventually runs out, things hit the fan real hard and that's all surface level stuff you see on TV. Times like these are foreign to the food industry especially for restaurants pop-up food stands and food trucks in this decade, not many of these places are lucky to be able to still serve the food they want to make. So ask yourself, instead of driving halfway through LA county for 20-30 mins pretending you drove across country, state lines and checkpoints for a sandwich but forgot/or could have order online to lock in your order when you get there, did you even really try or even considered the possibilities that you might not get your food? That dense huh. Food trucks don't have a backing of a huge corporate company to pump out endless food resources, of course they'll run out eventually. Don't be that person, don't be a Karen, don't be the type of customer that's named after an underrated wrestler who had their mother on a forklift during the twilight years of WCW, with a brain dead avatar of Akko who still thinks "the customer is always right" is a great slogan to use to be dishonest when you have zero interest and experience in this industry. Assumptions are bad, the old saying of "if you got nothing nice to say don't say nothing at all" works still when you can be honest and deliver actual constructive criticisms that are helpful, but there's a good chance many of you reviewers will continue to be inconsiderate, ignore what I just pointed out because you think the world revolves around you and anybody else that doesn't agree with you is just doing this for a non-existent currency known as "clout". Do not forget food workers, cooks, delivery are people too. Not everyone is perfect as "you" think they should be, they're not robots, you're not a robot. The world is full of wonderful things. Sometimes one of those wonderful things comes into your life; and it starts with an "F" and ends in a "uck"..... That's right.... A food truck. I know what you're thinking; Well actually I don't but regardless of my lack of telepathic abilities I know that you are reading this review and want to know the low down about this wonderful food truck... It's called Okamoto Kitchen. It's glorious. Delicious. Japanese comfort food mixed with a new and super cool vibe that the chefs and owners have mastered. I usually get: JFC (Japanese fried chicken) Classic flavor, crispy, juicy, crunchy, and flavorful. French Fries, bbq flavor is amazing. I ask for them a bit more done and crunchy but that's just me. I LOVE THE NOM BOMB The flavor is great, and I ask for extra jalapeños. If they have their cool drinks available I always grab a punch or a lime thing... sorry haha I always forget the name! But here's the main thing, the big deal... You should always try and order ahead online. They are a busy small business and are taking care of soooo many locations throughout the week. It's expected (at least I expect) that they may be very busy or out of something. THAT IS OKAY! They may run out of some items, they may take some time to make such quality food. THAT IS OKAY!!! BE PATIENT: Good things take time; don't be an a hole and complain about them just because it takes a little longer or if people ordered ahead of you. BE AWARE OF SUPPLY: If they are out of an item, DON'T BE AN A HOLE; adjust like a good person and find something else that you might like. They have SO much to offer and you being rude at a group of people cooking for you is just wrong. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is dope, the staff are hard working and I will be a supporter of their food trucks until they open a restaurant... where I will then spend the remainder of my time; wrapped up in a blanket of curry and jalapeños. This place is BOMB! The best food truck around. Really, it's that good. Yesterday was the first time I tried it at the Koreatown Night Market. The line for people getting food was one of the longer ones at the event. After trying the food I can see why. We had to wait about 15 minutes to order. The wait was definitely well worth it. Would have waited longer for the food. It was that good. They had this cheese, mochi, fried thingy, that was so good. The owner was really nice and brought out a curry sauce to dip it in. It went from awesome to Fn' awesome. The dishes here aren't the typical Japanese dishes you see around but what you would see if you were in Japan. The owner had extensive knowledge about Japan and the foods customary to there. I was really impressed with how much he knew about Japanese food. Anyways, the katsu curry sandwich is what everyone raves about. It has a perfect combination of flavors to compliment each other. Not one flavor over powers the other. What you get is an amazing burger that is moist, juicy, with tons of flavor. A hard burger to beat anywhere. While we waited, we chopped it up with the owner. Super friendly guy. His wife is Japanese. He is not. Either way, they are serving some serious Japanese food and are very hospitable, and willing to educate you about their menu. They answered every question we had about the food, gave us suggestions, etc. Overall, a very pleasant experience. I would definitely eat the food here again. I know the truck moves around. I am not a reviewer typically. But I really enjoy this truck, Ive followed them on Facebook for several years after eating their food at a concert. All I had at the time were the okonomi fries, which were delicious. And that was enough for me to track their every movement to see when they were in my area next. Now they frequent my city and I couldn't be happier. My wife is drawn to poke like a moth to flame, so she has only had that, which she loves. I wish I had tried a different sandwich than the Bird of Fire, because now I just keep going back to that one, I am a big fan. Now I understand they aren't perfect, I'm not a fan of the Thai iced tea, each time I've gotten it I was left unsatisfied. But their milk tea is very tasty. I have waited in long lines for their food, as well as walked right up, and gotten it delivered (which is awesome option) the only downside to delivery, not their fault, is the freshness of the food (again no ones fault just an observation to those who might consider delivery) I'm glad they have such a fan base, and as long as I see them coming to my city I will order from them. read more

Since the world is currently in a sad state , I'm very honored by all the heroes out there who are protecting us by making sure we 're are all healthy and happy . Okamouto kitchen and other food buisnesses are heroes too because their goal is to make sure that people like you and me don't go hungry during this hard time. I've having their food deilevered to me for 2 weeks and it brings me such excitement as i eat their food not only that it's yummy but you can see the labor of love and care is put in ^_^ I had food from their actual food truck as well and yes it is hard for them and us but they're trying their best and you could see how hard they work just by looking and tasting their food . For the most part the food was ok nothing to brag about. My friends and I ordered the Japanese fried chicken plate, beef rice bowl and cheese mochi. Tried to order water but I guess they ran out. The wait was ridiculous. We waited over 40min from start to finish. The fried chicken was salty and had way to much bbq sauce. The food was a pricey $14 for karage and beef bowl. Two ladies before us were commenting the food better be good for having to pay this price. Several people were heard complaining about the wait. All in all if I expect fast service when going to a good truck. If I wanted a over 40 minute wait I could've chosen to go to a sit down restaurant. This truck seemed a little overburdened on both man power and supply as they'd already ran out of their special soba noodles just after 12pm. They apparently were slammed but I guess that is to be expected when you're one of four trucks at an event. But a tofu bowl (waaay too much rice) fries and two drinks (both overly sugary) cost 30 bucks and I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out how? No pricing was clearly listed. Also got the order wrong by adding something we expressly asked to hold and our fries order seemed smaller than other batches being served. A total ??? There was nothing special about the food that day to be honest. Too bad. Looked really good. read more

I've been eating at Okamoto Kitchen since my first Anime Expo in 2016. They were in thousand oaks yesterday and saw advertising all week on Facebook so I made plans with my bfs to get lunch after work. When we placed our order online around 2 they said pick up would be available around 7-8pm. We decided to change it to a nice dinner instead. Once we went at our time the process was quick and easy. Good food and good service. Many in line were complaining as it's the last hour of service and they're running out of things but these were just angry privileged people that don't care that the coronavirus is happening so things are a lot more difficult to do. read more

I've been eating from Okamoto Kitchen for years now. I remember first seeing them in front of my local market as a teen and ordering my first Katsu Sandwich. There's a reason why I've been ordering from them whenever they're in town. Their food is exactly what it says it is, food that makes you comfortable. They're reliable and I always know I'm going to enjoy my meal. Not only is their food great but they're even putting in the effort to deliver and set up stands during these times. Was very excited to see them serving food in my TO neighborhood during the CA lockdown. An excuse to leave the house! Yay! Food was delicious. Teriyaki chicken and beef are expertly seasoned, so the sauce is just the enhancement to the flavor, not the only flavor. Japanese fried chicken was amazing---crisp and flavorful, even after transporting it home. Fries were just the right amount of spicy. Salads were fresh, and thai iced tea was just the right accompaniment. Meals were a good value as well, as I have leftovers! Love this food truck, delicious food, and friendly staff. Over the months they have tweeked their menu a bit, but many of their current options are worth trying like the katsu curry sandwich. Honestly the only real gripe I would have is that paper liner that they use, when something moist or saucy gets into contact with it, it starts to disintegrate and meld with the food and it's kind of a shame to get that mixed in your meal. It doesn't seem to pose an issue when you eat your food right away, but in the few times I had to drive it home that's the only issue we've ever come across. read more

My friends and I have been coming to this food truck for a while now. It gets busy and you gotta understand is they have two food trucks and that's it. No restaurant or anything of the sort. They go to different locations because there's enough demand for them to go. I don't think they deserve any of this negative reviews because some people are impatient. Sometimes they run out of ingredients, it happens. And now with what is happening in California and around the world they are operating differently. They have a website to order ahead of time and hours and locations. read more

This food truck popped up on my FB feed saying they would be in my neighborhood the next day. I told my fiance about it and we were looking forward to it for 24 hours, haha. I have to say it did not disappoint! We felt super lucky that we found this place. We ordered way too much food, because we had been salivating over the menu for a day but also because the prices are extremely fair. Everything was delicious! After weeks of planning, I finally got to experience the sheer joy that is Okamoto Kitchen! I've seen the truck a couple of times on Whittier Blvd in Pico Rivera so I looked them up online. Definitely place your order online (starting at 6am day of) and you won't be disappointed. I've seen a couple of people complain about no walk ups but the staff is so friendly and all they ask is do your homework ahead of time. Check at the beginning of the week and you'll know when they'll be near you. Love you guys and can't wait to see you in a couple of weeks. read more

I've been a patron of this food truck for years now and I'm embarrassed that it took me this long to write a review. Okamoto is one of my favorite places to get delicious food. I literally get cravings for their house fries and their JFC plate. Excellent food, excellent service. Worth ordering in advance due to no walk up service right now, but I can't wait until after the pandemic is over because there is nothing quite like just seeing their truck and going "fuck it, I need me a sushi burrito right now" and pulling a u-turn. 10/10 would reccomend. read more

Overrated. Was excited to try this place near my home yesterday but was disappointed. Went to go pick up 2 min after i got the ready notification. I tried the Spicy Tuna Stack - tuna was good, but rice was not crispy and mushy. Bird of Fire sandwich - the chicken piece I got was so thin, I couldn't even taste the chicken that much, mostly bread and soggy insides. Okamoto style Jfc- chicken was good, but the sauce overpowered the whole flavor Soy butter fries - nothing really special Probably will not return to eat here again. read more

Brian W. Are you nuts? Just tried Okamoto Kitchen and it was incredibly tasty. I kept ordering after I was full. We are going back again soon...we cannot wait. Unfortunately some people aren't happy with anything they try. Do not be fooled, this was a five star experience. The only reason the food wasn't faster is because the LINE WAS DOWN THE BLOCK. Went back again today. Got the spicy tuna bowl and decided I had to try the Bird of Fire, ghost pepper style. I think other people would like it, but I wanted to make a note that it's extremely sweet. I know a lot of hot chicken places put sugar in their seasoning, but this was way beyond in regards to any chicken sandwich I've ever had. It was also not spicy, which surprised me. I found their post on Facebook from a friend. I first have the Katsu curry chicken sandwich, Okonomiyaki fries, and their punch. I've been hooked over since. My wife and daughter are also huge fans of this amazing food, and awesome service. I really feel like I'm in Japan when I'm placing my order with the crew, and the owners are hands down what Japanese hospitality is all about. It's always worth the wait when they're around. The only reason I finished the sliders was because of the buns and spicy mayo. When I asked my spouse what he thought of the chicken katsu, he simply said it was not good. I try not to write negative reviews, but we paid more than $50 for two meals, and as we talked about the food afterward, neither of us could come up with anything positive to say about it.
