This place has always been a mystery to me. Fellow Dentonites seem to love it, but the service, food and experience have never lived up to a simple trip to literally any Cracker Barrel in my experience. I cannot once remember a time that I A) had memorably good service B) was seated or had my food out in a close to reasonable amount of time C) did not feel cramped and crowded when I was there. The biggest thing that sticks with me about Oldwest is this: This is the only restaurant, bar or establishment I have ever been asked to leave in my 29 years of life. Why, you may ask? For having a small, 4-man Bible study. A few years back when they were on Dallas Drive, a guy I knew invited me, my brother, and one other friend to get some breakfast at Oldwest and have a brief Saturday morning bible study. We ordered our food, ate, and as soon as we finished eating opened our bibles and did a quiet opening prayer amongst ourselves to start. That prayer was interrupted by a male shift manager saying, "EXCUSE ME, you can't do that here. If you are done eating you need to LEAVE so we can get more tables in." No apology, no friendliness in his voice, but more the tone of a bartender kicking out an unruly or hostile patron. This was not 15 minutes after we were served our food. Again, I have never been asked to leave a restaurant in my life, and have eaten at a whole lot of very busy restaurants. That experience left an extremely bad taste in my mouth, and to this day if anyone recommends Oldwest I try to steer our caravan over to Cracker Barrel instead. The food is far more worth the wait, consistently better service, and have never been asked to leave because I prayed or held a Bible. read more

This place has potential but I was not satisfied. I ordered an omelette which was pretty good and I ordered a cinnamon roll French toast which was as hard as a rock. I was unable to even cut into it and I tried everything to revive it but it was no good. I tried calling the restaurant to see if they would make me another since mine was over cooked or had been made days ago and left out but no one ever answered the phone. First time visiting here with a local friend. The wait was about 20 mins on the 4th of July, so not bad at all. I ordered the Bronco with vanilla malt pancakes, eggs, grits and sausage. I was very underwhelmed. The pancakes tasted like regular buttermilk pancakes. The eggs and sausage were bland and the grits were just ok. My friend ordered The Cheyenne with eggs, bacon and hash brown casserole. The French Toast was good: tasted just like a cinnamon roll. The hash brown casserole was also good. Finally got to try Oldwest after a while! There's always a long line of people waiting to get in on the weekend, but it's definitely worth the wait! The waitress we had was super nice and although it was super packed inside, she kept up with our refills and anything else we needed! The interior of Oldwest is very comforting with its Western design. I ordered the Mugwump, weird name, but it was probably one of the best french toasts I've ever had!! It was so soft, and the it felt like it melted in my mouth because it was so creamy and good! The crust was covered in something crunchy, kind of like a crushed up cinnamon toast crunch. I love this restaurant so much! The staff is super friendly and welcoming, you feel right at home here. The wait time during the week is usually none, but on weekends you'll be there for a while, which is expected. I came on a sunday around noon and they told me my wait time was 45 minutes and I got get down after 30 so not that bad! I love the food here, I always end up eating off everyone's plate when I come here to try new things. OH and they have iced coffee, super delicious! read more

Delicious food and excellent service! I had a dish called "The Alamo". It was a breaded chicken cutlet, it was served topped with cheese sauce, sour cream and avocado, mashed potatoes, fried okra and Texas toast. My server was Lance. I came in at closing time, however instead of making me feel unwelcome or hurried I was encouraged to take my time and enjoy my meal. I will return. They easily could've just had better Decour. When you go to a café like this, you do expect to have some type of sense of an older café. Today we ate at Oldwest, it's one of our favorite places. The food is always awesome but today the waitress shined the most. I'm probably misspelling her name but Delayna absolutely made my day today. I lost my mom 3 months ago and a song played at her service came on shortly after we sat down and I kinda lost it because I hadn't heard it since. I rushed off to the bathroom because I'm not a public cryer and I couldn't quite get it together. Apparently she noticed and talked to my husband while I was gone. When I came back this girl blessed me today with an act of kindness and she probably has no idea how much it meant to my husband and I. In a world that seems so mean right now, this sweet girl showed so much compassion and I left in tears feeling a little bit better about the world. My one and only time eating here and I completely enjoyed it :) Passing through Denton with my son and friend and we got to sit inside, at the booth in the corner and enjoyed the wall of Quotes, Field of Horses, chickens & eggs on the roof :) I especially recommend the Lemon Blueberry pancakes with blueberry syrup !!! 5/5 for overall service and food!! But the heavy front door closed on me fast and sliced the back of my heel on the way out as i was holding it open for my group to pass through. Have only done breakfast here, and it's a gourmet's delight. Multiple choices of eggs, breakfast meats, pancakes, waffles, biscuits, gravy, and various fruit toppings. Oldwest Cafe is a fan favorite for all the college students within Denton, but also what many people would consider Home after living/growing up in Denton! They are very unique and offer a wide variety of delicious food! The new Oldwest location even has a coffee bar inside with so many different coffee options that it'll take you forever just to pick your drink! I usually always get the French toast with Nutella and strawberries but recently started branching out and am loving their omelettes, the stagecoach(biscuit w/gravy, eggs, and veggies), eggs Benedict and more)! It's been 7 years since I've been to Denton so when we made a trip up there, I had to make sure we made a stop. They relocated to a bigger place off 288 and 35, which is awesome because the wait isn't as long. The food was just as delicious as I remembered! Portions are massive!
