I must have been lost. After all- why would I be on 171st street on a hot Summer's night driving around looking for something to eat?? But then I saw it. Like a beacon in the darkness around it, the Olympic Star saved me from starvation after a concert I attended at the Tweeter Center. This place is your typical Greek diner. Open 24/7, old school decor (circa 1970), a TV strangely placed by the fireplace, desserts in a display case, and everything you could imagine on the menu, this is a Tinley Park diner favorite and I saw why on this Saturday night. The owner warmly greeted us and found us a booth. Our server was quick with the menu, and as I always love in Greek places, told us the good bad and ugly of what we wanted to order. On this night it was the pie wasn't so good- go for the ice cream. She was great! The chicken noodle soup was tasty, my grilled cheese like my mom used to make them and my friend's salad was quite well put together. Nothing fancy but certainly functional. And the prices were very reasonable too! So the next time you find yourself down in Tinley Park- check out the Olympic Star. We stopped in for a quick breakfast, ordered a PANCAKE SANDWICH!! 2 pancakes with sliced ham in the middle, topped with 2 eggs! Ridiculously good! I really enjoyed the creamy garlic dressing on my side salad and the rice pudding w/whipped topping and cinnamon was a fantastic closer! Stopped in after fasting for 14 plus hours. Hubby likes the place so I gave in, despite some not so good experiences. My eggs, ordered over medium, came with the whites still runny. I also ordered bacon and sausage. The bacon was like old rubber, but we didn't complain about that. I didn't get the sausage, but we didn't complain about that either. When we sent my eggs back, they took the whole plate. Not once did I think they would recook the same eggs that I cut into. But they did. In the meantime, they delivered my sausage, but I didn't have a fork to eat it with while waiting for my eggs. So, when I saw that I got the same bacon and recooked eggs that I had sent back, I freaked out. I've worked at restaurants most of my adult life and we always cooked the order all over again. On top of using the same eggs, it's COVID-19 time! That did it. I got a to go container to bring that crap home to my poor dog. Thought best of it and didn't feed it to my dog. I'm upset that all this happened in front of one of the owners. Then, when we were paying the bill, the hostess asked how everything was, my husband told her. She didn't do or say anything, not even " I'm sorry". I don't care how bad I want saganaki, I will never go back there! read more

Went with my daughter's and ordered Gyros dinner, spanakopita and souvlaki, Salads with creamy garlic dressing for all and creamy chicken rice soup for the girls. Girls had ice cream for dessert. Salads were crisp and moist and the dressing was fantastic. Soup was good although both girls added lemon to give it the lemon rice flavor. Spanakopita was good and came with cottage cheese and peaches. The gyros was dry but the seasoned fries were great. Souvlaki was the star of the show, 6 skewers with 4 big chunks of pork on a pita with onions, feta and kalamata olives. Overall not the best but not the worst that I've had. I can see from other reviews that many people like this place. To me it is mediocre. I base this on only one visit. We came here last week as a group of 5 for breakfast. My first impression of this place is that it is a bit worn and not as clean as other places. This is a 24 hour Greek diner type of restaurant. The service is decent but not great. It was not for lack of trying but there were not many waitresses working the floor. There is a a full bar. As far as the food goes it is not fair portions for the price. I can overlook this if the food is great but it was not. The skirt steak and eggs had a small amount of harsh browns and a smaller than usual and bland steak. It was, however, cooked to the correct medium rare. One of the others had the same thing I did and thought the same of it. My wife had the usual bacon and eggs and gave it an ok but not much more. Our other friends had omelets and said they were good. To me first impressions are everything and especially for breakfast. If you cannot do breakfast well then I am hard pressed to give it a second try. In this case I will pass. read more

Where do I start with O Star. I have such a love for this place. In the 90's my family would go for breakfast after church at St Elizabeth on Sunday's. Then as I got a little older my friends and I would come here to sit in the smoking section and drink coffee. Now in my 30's I still come here for the food, the staff, and the owners. My BFF and I found this place on accident after a class we had attended at a local business so after a concert recently we were both hungry and remembered the Olympic Star so off we went. It's definitely a greasy spoon with worn tables and decor, but that is what we love about it, it feels like it's family owned for a generation or two (maybe even three) and I love supporting Mom & Pop places. Their menu is full of various choices from breakfast, sandwiches and full dinners with very reasonable prices. There are better options in area for breakfast. Three of us had bad experience. One of us ordered Hercules with poached and one ordered eggs Benedict. While the third ordered 2 eggs scrambled soft with bacon and pancakes. On all three orders the eggs came out hard and were sent back. On the return the poached still came out hard. It wasn't even that busy. No excuse for the eggs. As for the hollandaise sauce. It was jarred and it still broke. I had coffee and first cup good. Second cup and replacement tasted scorch. My dining companions ordered ice tea. It was off tasting. So they were not upset about this restaurants policy of two refills for soda or tea. Since pop and tea 2.25, this policy is just plain cheap on restaurant's perspective. All in all, breakfast sucked. As stated at beginning there are better nearby options. This place is very old school. Brought back many fond memories for me of having dinner with my dad when I was a kid. I had the roast beef aju with mashed potatoes prior to that I had the chicken noodle soup which was excellent. The roast beef au jus was outstanding I even loved the mashed potatoes. My 12 year old son and eight year old daughter both had the pancakes with bacon both of my kids were very content with their meal. I love this place and it's old school look. My friends and I really enjoy this restaurant. It's family style and very friendly and welcoming staff. I've eaten many meals there and enjoyed them all. Especially the chicken and rice soup, gyros plate, spinach pie, omelettes and Greek toast. It's a nice place to socialize and popular with the seniors, including myself. Always great service and portions are huge! Went yesterday and had the lasagna and had enough to eat half then and the other half for lunch today. Soups are always great! Well, it's a definite improvement from our last visit. .. I initially ordered the pork tenderloin, but I couldn't eat it... dry, bland & rubbery.
