Everyone knows I'm a big fan of Hunan cuisine, and I often check out Hunan restaurants around Los Angeles. I didn't expect that this newly opened spot, Xiang Jian Chuan Chuan, would have an extra surprise--Labubu-themed desserts and a real-life "Labubu" character walking around to interact with guests! The kids went absolutely wild--what a fun idea from the owner! This place is newly opened, and the dishes are authentically Hunan in flavor: Spicy Crispy Tripe - super crunchy and perfect with rice Bandit-Style Pork Liver - aromatic, spicy, and not at all gamey Dry Pot Potato Slices - I could honestly finish half a pot by myself Hunan-Style Braised Pork - tender, melt-in-your-mouth, rich but not greasy They serve the rice by the bucket , and you can get refills--Hunan food is just too good with rice! And if you think they only do Hunan dishes, you're wrong--the skewers are a nice surprise too: Large Red Willow Lamb Skewers and Small Lamb Skewers are flavorful and tender, with portion sizes close to what you'd find in Xinjiang. They even have grilled lamb kidneys (rare to see in the US), which my husband loved. Grilled Squid and Scallops with Vermicelli are also worth trying. Met a friend here but she had a hard time figuring out what is the name of this restaurant. She linked me directions to the restaurant next door because the name was hard to find. Their name is Orange Bistro, but its nowhere in the front of the street. There's also a sign that read Flora. Parking is either street parking or the parking structure located in the back of 1st street and north of Main st. The ambiance is casual and it was quiet because they just opened for their dinner shift. Their menu is wrong, the beef options were doubled and the descriptions were wrong. The second set of "beef options" were actually chicken options. I wanted pork belly, but she told me it was wrong and that it was lamb. A lot of items were crossed off and all the skewers that I ordered were full of spice (cumin) and it was too spicy for me to eat. I guess this entire menu is spicy. There weren't any indicators that the items were spicy. The menu also didnt have all the descriptions of what it contained as ingredients. Not many Service was really slow for how many people were in there. We came here because of the desserts that were on display the other day. When asked, the lady said there weren't anymore and isn't sure when it will be available again. There is a language barrier that made it difficult to understand. When it came time to pay, the machine was in a different language and all I saw was a 18%,20%, or 25% tip. I felt like she wanted me to select one of these options, but I how to change. She then proceeded to show me but I felt eyes watching my every move as she was waiting for me to enter the amount right then and there. If you like spicy foods, this is the place for you. The chicken is incredibly tender, with a melting, jelly-like quality, and is enjoyed with a mildly sweet soy sauce. The Pan-fried Milkfish's edges are where the best taste is. It's recommended to add lemon juice on top and to eat the golden crispy fish skin with the fish meat and melted fat. The Satay Water Spinach with Lamb, a typical dish found in Taiwanese stir-fry restaurants, is excellent with steamed rice. The sweetness of the goji berries and red dates in the Organic Chicken with Mountain Yam & Bamboo Shoots is notable. The Stir-fried Shredded Pork and Bamboo Shoots is another delectable dish to try. The Braised Taro with Basil & Minced Pork is unexpectedly delicious. The unique aroma of basil paired with the smooth, sticky texture of taro is quite special. This Stir-fried Pork Neck with Garlic Sprouts is similar to the classic stir-fried cured pork and garlic sprouts dish, except it uses Matsusaka pork instead of cured pork. Stopped by with the intention to try the cute desserts I had seen on display on a previous day. Unfortunately on this day there were zero desserts and the wait staff didn't know if they would have them back. We stayed anyway and decided to try some of the yakitori, cold cucumber and mopu tofu. There was definitely a language barrier with the staff and the menu. The translations on the menu were mostly incorrect so it was very difficult to understand and order. The sever tried to help as much as she could but she also had trouble translating so we ended up using Google translate, which limited the items we ordered. We ended up settling on beef brisket, sirloin and prawns. I enjoyed the seasoning which seemed to be the same in all (spicy and lots of cumin), but my friend thought they were too spicy and there was no way to know what was spicy or not so she couldn't order anything else. Also other items were mostly lamb or seafood but we didnt see any chicken and no pork as per the translation and per the server. We arrived at dinner opening time and although we were only one of three other tables, the service and food arrival was very slow. Besides the language barrier, it was confusing trying to figure out the name of the place,there is signage outside which says Flora but Google still has Orange Bistro which was the previous establishment name and the receipt was all in Chinese so that was no help with figuring it out either -but here we are, review under Orange Bistro Anyway, because I do like spicy food and enjoyed the yakitori, I'll return hopefully to try other food items with someone who understands the language and hopefully to find the cute desserts. The restaurant is now under new ownership and has shifted its focus to charcoal-grilled skewers, available exclusively during dinner service. Fortunately, they've kept some of the original Taiwanese menu, offering the best of both worlds. Orange Bistro serves a very specific niche, which is providing more upscale dining for Taiwanese immigrants. You don't see too many Taiwanese restaurants these days, and those that exist are typically your bento-style rice set or snack shops. Here they provide a banquet style setting for authentic Taiwanese style dishes (as noted by my dad, a Taiwanese immigrant). Their dishes are quite large portions which caught me by surprise with my initial thought of it being a typical Taiwanese restaurant in the area. For myself I chose the oyster cake. This is probably the most elevated quality of this I tried, having only eaten it in the US. The texture is completely consistent throughout where you don't get any lumpiness from the starch. While I wished there was slightly more egg in the proportioning, I enjoyed the dish, including the sauce which was well balanced. We shared the sesame oil noodle and the century egg and basil stinky tofu. The noodle was very simple with just sesame oil and whatever type of noodle you call it. The flavor was nostalgic and had a very Taiwanese essence. The stinky tofu was interesting, as I've never had fried century egg. It was nicely pleasant with a looser yolk and softer egg white texture somewhat reminding me of egg yolk fried dishes but more subtle and complex. The tofu itself was decent, but my dad wished it was stinkier and I wish it was crunchier. My brother chose the jalapeño lamb (you can pick beef or lamb but we love lamb). I really enjoyed the way they prepared the jalapeños which were mild-medium and sliced thin the way you might see bell peppers in a stir fried dish. The texture was perfect to me with them being slightly crunchy but cooked through. It wasn't too oily overall but being a stir fried meat dish it can come off a bit heavy since the residual oil pools at the bottom. But definitely not as greasy feeling as I've had. They offered a complimentary aiyu jelly and grass jelly mix dessert, which is a combination I've never encountered. It was a nice little treat at the end with acidity from the typical lemon aiyu with some herbal notes from the grass jelly. Overall I think the food quality deserves 5 stars as I would love to come back again to try a lot of their menu items. I appreciate that this restaurant exists to serve this specific niche to have upscale food native Taiwanese people like to eat. While I personally would come rarely because I don't have that much money at the moment (roughly $25-$30 per person for my dad, brother and me), I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to others who love or want to try Taiwanese food beyond your popcorn chicken, Taiwanese sausage, or pork cutlet rice set. read more

Great classic Taiwanese food! Restaurant inside was clean and modern looking with a few larger tables with lazy susans along with smaller tables. I would recommend coming with a larger group as the dishes are pretty large. You get complimentary peanuts and sardines fish (?) which was tasty. My favorite dish was the fish that had lots of garlic and seasoning, with a layer of tofu underneath -- so flavorful, just watch out for bones. We also got three cup combo that came with chicken, squid, and we added pigs blood cake -- pretty classic, chicken was a little hard to eat as full of bones but to be expected. Green onion pancake was thin and crispy, tasted good with the sauce from the fish. We ended with taro and grass jelly dessert which was perfectly creamy and not too sweet, just wish it had some sago. The food was just like how I imagined back in Taiwan: The stinky tofu, the pig ears, the lofa and the piping hot pot. All to die for. Our group could not decide whether to get the fried stinky tofu or the steamed stinky tofu, so we got both. Place was empty on a Thursday night. Came in to the dining experience with a positive mindset but it turned into a disappointment. Food was expensive compared to another taiwanese restaurant that I tried in Rowland Heights and they sell the same type of dishes! Ordered the three cup chicken, spicy pork intestine with pork blood, and salted egg with bitter melon. The three cup chicken had barely any meat. It was mostly bones with sauce. For people who have little to no teeth it will be difficult to eat and I say that with caution! Some pieces of bone did fall off when I bit into the chicken. For $25.99 a dish you would expect at least some chicken thighs. I could have just gone to the supermarket bought some chicken thighs and made this myself at home and I'm speaking from personal experience. I did make this dish at home before. The salted egg with bitter melon was good. Liked that it was cooked with white bitter melon instead of the green kind. Loved the spicy pork intestine with pork blood. Paired perfectly well with complimentary two bowls of white rice. Meal ended with dessert - green grass jelly with aiyu jelly. It was surprisingly good. Service was ok, one of the ladies was friendlier than the other. One of them looked bitchy looking with long hair to her shoulders. Haven't had good Taiwanese food in quite some time and was eager to try Orange Bistro. Decided to come for an early lunch and arrived before they were open. We were the only patrons in the restaurant for quite some time. There was only 1 lady working and felt bad as she was struggling to keep up. We ordered quite a few dishes and though most were good. Fried stinky tofu - nicely fried but for those who really like a pungent tofu, this one isn't for you. It had a very mild aroma and was almost like a regular fried tofu. Bitter melon stir fried w/salted egg - personally not a fan of butter melon but the wife and a close friend loved this dish. Taiwanese pan fried rice noodle - pretty good but had a lot of dried shrimp which I'm not a huge fan of. Oyster omelette - pretty good and had a decent amount of oysters. Preserved daikon egg omelette - one of my favorite dishes served during our meal. Sponge gourd w/ dried shrimp - decent vegetable dish even though there was dried shrimp. Minced pork rice - the one dish I've been craving for a while. It was good and satisfied my craving but wasn't the best I've ever had. Wanted to try both the taro soup and tong yuen so we ordered both! Can't go wrong with black sesame tong yuen but wasn't a huge fan of the fermented rice soup. Enjoyed the taro soup more but it needed more simple sugar syrup as it wasn't really sweet. The portion was huge, but it had very sparse "mix-in" that usually should come with this dish. Only few slices of shredded pork and cabbage. Even the carrots were only very few sprigs. In my opinion these thinly sliced mix ins are very important in this dish since it provides appropriate texture and variety with each bite. The Loofah with clams was pretty good I would recommend it. I came to Orange Bistro after seeing reviews on Facebook about authentic and delicious Taiwanese food! I would say it was authentic for the most part but the food was just okay. The ambiance of the restaurant was similar to other big Asian restaurants, handful of the typical large tables good for gatherings and a good amount of four seaters on the side. The waiters and waitresses were all very nice and served the food promptly after ordering. I really wanted to like the food at this place but it just isn't really worth the hype in my opinion, especially in an area with so much other Taiwanese food competition. I had very high hopes for the salty egg stinky tofu but was very disappointed. I understand the stinky tofus in the states can't be as Stinky as the ones in Taiwan but this wasn't stinky at all! Maybe I should have ordered just the boiled or fried stinky tofu. The deep fried oyster was decently cooked, but not very flavorful, it got very fishy by the end of the meal when it got colder, recommend to finish this ASAP. The combination with three cup sauce and lard over rice were pleasant surprises that I truly enjoyed! The house special minced pork rice, marinated cabbage potatoes, minced pork rice and satay water spinach with beef were all just okay, nothing special but not terrible. We came in for lunch on a Sunday. The place was empty except for one other large party. The menu was pretty straightforward. There's no lunch special so every dish was kind of pricey. We ordered the three cup chicken ($30), garlic pepper pork chop ($24), and the minced pork dry noodle ($11). I was especially looking forward to trying the three cup chicken as it's one of my favorite dishes, but this one was full of bones and barely any meat or sauce. My friends had ordered the dishes for our entire group so I didn't get to check the menu myself but I do recall my favorite dishes below: - Taro Chips - First time trying these and I really liked them. They went really well with the peanuts with dry fish. Both are more like appetizers. Something to enjoy before getting the main course. - Fried Stinky Tofu-My favorite dish! It doesn't quite have the distinct smell until you get close to it. So the good thing is that it doesn't stink up the room but it definitely tastes authentic as if I was back in Taiwan. Now I have a go-to spot for my stinky tofu! - Oyster Omelet - First time trying this as well and I enjoyed how fresh the oyster tasted within the omelet. It's definitely a savory dish and is well balanced. - Smoked Duck - Highly recommended. I only like duck when it's specifically pecking duck but after taking a bite of the smoked duck, I felt like I was in heaven. This dish is served cold and the smokiness of the duck is quite nice. Paired really nicely with the tofu and the oyster omelet. - There was a dish that had I believe jellyfish, pig ears, and other things I can't quite recall what it was but that one was decently good, but I'm not sure if I would personally order it. I'm not a big fan of jellyfish and pig ears but I know that's something that is something that you either grew up eating or like exotic meats. Still great to try if you haven't had any of these items before. I'm just not really into foods that seem exotic to me. - Taro Soup- First time trying taro soup and I loved this one as well. This is one of those soups I felt has a slight sweet taste to it, but not sweet like an American dessert. I would also recommend this for anyone wanting to try something new. I really enjoyed my dinner at the Orange Bistro. Not only was the food delicious, the owner of the restaurant was also able to greet us and she was a bundle of joy. So kind and she radiated so much positivity and I absolutely loved how energetic and alive she was which contributed to the dining experience. You can tell she is passionate about her restaurant and I admire passionate individuals. Located in a very central part of Alhambra, there's some street parking and you can also find parking in the structure behind the restaurant. I didn't know the area too well so I ended up going to the structure behind the movie theater across the street. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to try Taiwanese food! This is a newer Taiwanese restaurant in alhambra. The portions are huge and great for family style sharing. Everything was really flavorful. My favorites were the stinky tofu and the smoked duck! I wish the dishes came out closer together though because we ordered a lot of food and i was really full before all the dishes came out. read more

Recommend one of the best Taiwanese restaurants I have eaten in Los Angeles. The owner reopened new restaurant at Alhambra main st. After trying it, I feel that the food is just as authentic as the food in Taiwan. If you have never been to Taiwan, or do not know what is really delicious Taiwanese food, then you must try this one. New tasty Taiwanese restaurant servings authentic Taiwanese flavors. Go for the three cups dishes with hints of ginger, soy sauce, sugar, basil, and simply umami! The Taiwanese vermicelli is a must dish. Dishes are pretty big portioned too. I also like the sponge gourd dishes that are not as easy to find. Attentive friendly service. I will be back for sure to try more of the yummy dishes. Good for large parties too as they have banquet style food too. New Taiwanese restaurant in Alhambra. They have only been open for 2 weeks. I was craving for Taiwanese food and found Orange Bistro on Yelp. There was no wait on a Sunday lunch. Their price seems to be higher than usual, but their portions are big too. For our party of 2, it's difficult not to over order. We order 5 dishes. It came out to be $90, but we had a lot of leftovers to pack home. It's better with family style for big groups. Their tables didn't look very clean. It comes with a pot of complimentary tea. The tea will get very dark if you soak it for too long. They gave us a small complimentary vegetable dish. Their Three Cup Chicken Combination was great and flavorful. It had chicken, squid, and intestine in it. Best to order a bowl of rice to eat with it. The rice is $1.50. The Taiwanese Assorted Pan-Fried Rice Noodles was nice, and it's also better with rice. Oyster Omelet was nice. Thin Noodle with Black Sesame Oil was a big bowl of plain noodles with ginger slices and scallions. Nice service, but there is a little language barrier if you can't speak Mandarin, which was my case. Free parking on street or nearby parking structures. read more

A new Taiwanese restaurant in the area! We came in with a party of 4 at around 6:30 PM on a Wednesday night and were the only customers. It seems the area is pretty dead on weekdays as most of the restaurants nearby were empty as well. We were in quite a rush and they were able to serve us quickly! All of our food came out within 20 minutes and we were out before 7 PM. The prices may seem high but it is family style and the portions are huge! Complimentary chips - super flavorful and crispy! Dry shrimp with sponge gourd - There were some bitter pieces, but it was well cooked! Vegetarians beware, there are pieces of fried shrimp but it is easily avoided if you are okay with that. They also offered a spicy soy sauce on the side that went really well with this dish. House tofu - This dish was solid and the sauce flavored the tofu very well. The tofu was soft and spongy and soaked up the seasoning so there were no bland pieces. Taiwanese stir fried noodle - This dish tasted great and was very filling; we ended up taking most of it home because of how big the portion was. 3 cup chicken - Great flavor! Came out sizzling hot. Unfortunately we were in a rush so we packed most of this to-go. I would definitely come again if I am in the area! The service was great too and they packed us extra rice to-go. I recommend this to anyone looking for Taiwanese cuisine. All of the dishes we tried were good! read more
