As many other reviewers have said, you come here for the view and not the food. I will agree with that, our food was okay but watching the sunset here is nice. I came here with my family to celebrate my mom's actual birthday (we had surprise birthday party for her the week before), my sister made the reservations. Orange Hill is down east Chapman in the city of Orange, and (duh!) on a hill. There is a windy road up to the restaurant. I have severe motion sickness, but I made it up there without incident. They only have complementary valet parking, there is no self parking. The location is great to watch the sunset. The waitress, Sarah, was very helpful. We ordered wine, cabernet, and an appetizer, the sampler. The wine was nice and the appetizer was average. They handed out the bread and it was still steaming like it was just right out of the oven. I saw the prices, everything was is in the $20+ range for an entree. I just ordered the French Onion soup ($8), my boyfriend ordered the Drunken Mahi Mahi, my sister ordered the Bacon Wrapped Scallops, my mom ordered the sea bass, and my dad ordered the Prime Rib. I ate a little bit from my boyfriend's plate and thought the only thing that was good was the potatoes, I've had better Mahi Mahi from another place. I had half a scallop, it was okay, I prefer the bacon to be more crispy. My mom didn't finish her sea bass, partly because she had a stomach ache the day before and still was recovering. My dad liked his Prime Rib. We didn't order a dessert because we had cupcakes at home. This is a nice place to take a date, you want to impress or to celebrate maybe an anniversary, or take out of town guests to show them the view. My sister looked at this place for my mom's surprise party, but the menu was out of our price range budget for the party. They have a nice banquet area, so I can see why many people may choice this place for their wedding reception. Orange Hill is popularly known for their restaurant views and fire pits out on their patio overlooking the city of Orange. Honestly, that is all there is to rave about because bottom line, the food sucks. As much as I wanted to like this place because of their raving reviews, I was truly upset with the taste of their food. Funny thing is, I'm not even a hard person to please when it comes to taste! Both my boyfriend and I started off with appetizers. He got the french onion soup (which was good) and I started off with a chopped vegetable salad (don't know why it's called a salad because it reminded me of a coleslaw. The salad was very finely chopped into little pieces. I didn't really mind that, but I couldn't really get the full texture and taste of each vegetable I was tasting since everything was just mixed and chopped into one bunch. Next, the dijon vinaigrette was too much. They overdressed it. You may want to ask them to dress it lightly for you if you do choose to go with this plate to start because it was a bit on the heavier and sour side for me). Next, Entrees! Boyfriend got the New York steak (nothing ordinary. not really much flavor, won't be ordering it again) and I got the Filet Mignon (much better than the N.Y, but the sauce on it was killing the taste of my steak, and steak was just okay. I've had way better). Mashed potatoes were yum though. Soft and velvety, just the way I like it. Vegetables on the plate, nothing fancy. Just plain cooked vegetables. The service was great. I worked as an entertainer this year at Orange Hill and thought I would bring some family here for a holiday dinner as I had never been. However, we left somewhat disappointed and expected better. Bear in mind, we went towards closing on Christmas Eve. Drinks - Meh...I have some bartending experience and the drinks left me cold especially for the price. I tried the Berry Martini and it was very sour with no real flavor and I think it was a tangerine one which was just kinda bitter. Apps - Salmon tartar was exceptional, really enjoyed it! Salad - Caesar was kinda soggy with dressing, I like a nice crisp tossed Caesar with a light coating of dressing. Meal - The prime rib was very good, tender and flavorful. Au gratin potatoes were a bit rich but tasty. The creamed spinach was disappointing, basically soggy spinach floating in cream. It should have been more combined and pureed I guess with more of a creamy, cheesy flavor. Dessert - The options were not impressive and we skipped it. For an Orange themed restaurant, there should be a unique Orange cake or something similar. Service - Very friendly and attentive, long waits in the beginning but got better. Overall, we were excited about going and left feeling kinda unimpressed with an overall "meh" feeling. Made reservations for 10 for 5:30 pm and were seated promptly WITH an amazing view which we had requested. We were celebrating two birthdays and had a specialty cake with us with specific instructions on placement of the candles. The staff handled it beautifully. I was taken here for my birthday dinner and enjoyed every minute. We were seated in the outside patio with a beautiful view of the city. The lighting was intimate and warm and the ambience was just my speed. A plus, you have options to be seated at a table or by a fire pit. Their bacon Mac and cheese was delicious and well-portioned. I ordered the pan seared scallops on shrimp cakes for the entree; the scallops were perfectly cooked and the shrimp cakes were amazing. For dessert, they brought out a cheesecake with a marshmallow cream topping and fresh fruit. It was soooo gooood, if I wasn't already full I would have had seconds. Oh and our server was the best. I don't remember her name but she was so nice and even offered to take our pictures lol. And I appreciated that she paired a good wine with our food. Came here with a party of 17 this past Saturday for brunch. Beautiful drive up the hill and entrance into the restaurant. The service was decent and consistent. A quarter of our group arrived early for the brunch buffet and we were kindly invited to the bar for bottomless mimosas to wait for the rest of our group. Surprisingly, the place wasn't busy so we were lucky enough to be seated outside in the patio for the view, which I must say probably looks better at night. The champagne to oj ratio of the mimosas is perfect. Although it's really odd that they leave their champagne and OJ out sitting in a bin in the patio. I was also disappointed that the OJ wasn't fresh squeezed or at least better tasting. The food is average, but tbh I'm not into buffets. I feel that quality of food is lacking in these types of restaurants. However, the seafood, prime rib, blueberry pancakes and waffles weren't bad. The waffles were bomb as a matter of fact and in the perfect single serving size. It was also my first time having a banana foster and that was good! (We asked for half the amount of butter for the glazed banana. Still was too much for me). The dessert selections weren't bad but the bowl of strawberries for the chocolate fountain was a little gross. Looked messy and not so fresh. Thankfully the regular plates of fruit salad were fresh. Shrimp ceviche was good, but chips, unfortunately stale. We ordered egg whites that tasted like they were cooked in too much oil. Now I just feel bad. I still enjoyed the experience! It's a nice place to hang out with friends and family on a lovely day with good weather, so I won't discount Orange Hill for their hospitality, relaxing atmosphere and pretty view. So tonight there was brush fire on the hill that this restaurant sits on. I want to applaud the staff because they were absolutely amazing throughout the entire ordeal. The entire staff came out with buckets of water and poured it on the brush fire and the surrounding balcony. Managers evacuated the balcony and soon the entire restaurant. They were all very calm and professional the entire time. Parking is valet only but the parking assistants moved all of that's that were immediately in danger. I wish we would have been able to get our keys sooner because it was very cold tonight. But since the fire was on the hill and fire dept was blocking the hill nobody was allowed to exit. Kind of scary but eventually the fire road behind the restaurant was opened up and we were able to leave. Great job to all the staff involved. On a side note: food was delicious! read more

First, let me say that I have been a patron at Orange Hill for many years, and even chose OH as my junior prom restaurant of choice in 1989. I've always thought the ambience at OH and patio view is something magical.... however, last night was less then magical.... very disappointing. I was with a party of 5 for my step-mothers birthday celebration. She made the reservations in advance and told them that it was for her bday. Prior to being seated, we had drinks in the bar..no problem there.. as a matter of fact, the mixologist there was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Drinks were great. After we were seated in the dining room for dinner, during initial conversation with the waitress, my step-mother mentioned to the waitress again that it was her bday. The waitress acknowledged her and was already aware of the bday via the reservation as well. Fast forward to the dining experience and food.... first off, it was very loud in the dining area.....like cafeteria noise level loud. Second, the food was mediocre at best . I had the NY strip steak-- good flavor but tough even while cooked medium rare. It came with a side of bacon/lobster mac n cheese. This was about a small condiment container size worth. My dad had the prime rib off of the sunset menu.... "tough, rubbery and no flavor" was his description. These dishes were certainly not worth $32.00+. Years ago, the food here was fabulous... I'm not sure what has happened but it seems like they have lost their mo-jo here. In the end, at dessert time, only 2 desserts were brought out for 3 of my relatives who had ordered off of the sunset menu.... on this menu, with the prefix meals, dessert comes with the meal, so I'm not sure how the waitress missed this. The waitress acted like she didn't know that a third dessert had been ordered and said she would "add it on"... So she brought out the last dessert, however, never said anything more about my stepmother's bday or bringing her a special bday dessert ....( In years past, at OH, and any other decent place, the wait staff bring out dessert with a candle in it at the very least) . Needless to say, my stepmother was disappointed that her special day really wasn't recognized at OH and we were all disappointed in the lackluster service and mediocre food. If it wasn't for the patio view and special memories in years past, I would not recommend OH for dining... only drinks and appetizers at most out on the patio. Maybe the manager should reevaluate the young staff that have been hired here as well as the food quality coming out of the kitchen. Get it together, Orange Hill! read more

My husband and I have gone to this restaurant many times over the years to enjoy cocktails on the patio. However, today when we arrived before 5p and asked for patio seating we were relegated to the inside bar and witnessed many, many tables open on the patio ! This was quite 'disappointing' and when the hostess finally came to tell us we could sit on the patio we had finished our drinks and we not feeling like staying any longer. The one person we would like to acknowledge for service recovery was the bartender who was aware of our dilemma and did not charge us for our drinks ! I came here for weekday dinner, crowded. The ambiance is amazing and maybe they have good food and drinks (did not try), but none of these items were any good. Crab cake app, prime rib, king crab, creamed spinach side. I didn't order anything the server recommended such as Chilean sea bass and short ribs. Service was slow, perhaps the servers are understaffed and a huge group left after not getting their drinks in 30 mins so maybe the bar is understaffed too. I noticed before coming that people commented on super slow service. Appetizers were good. Main course turkey dinners were cold and had to be sent back. We asked the waiter for all white meat and he said he would have to talk to the chef. The chef said it was ok to give us all white meat. We asked for salt and pepper multiple times and when the waiter finally brought it to our table it was poured on a plate and we had to use our fingers to put it on our food. It was so windy that most of it was blown away. My partner even asked for extra cranberry sauce when he ordered and even offered to pay for a side. That never came with the meal we had to remind the waiter again for it. When it came it was in a tiny little silver cap. When they brought out our food for the second time we were given dark meat and white meat. I told the food runner this is not what we ordered. The person that brought us the food said that is how it comes with both white and dark meat. I told him no and I was just going to get pissed and say something and instead I said forget about it. My food was barely warm. I just gave up at that point and ate it. Grey Goose martini was not even poured to the top. The glass was only 3/4 full. We came all the way from the South Bay just to have a bad experience for Thanksgiving. We were never presented with a check. They gave us little credit card machine with a total. I was not happy with the amount my partner left for a tip, as I thought 22% tip was too much for the poor service and food we received. This was the worst Thanksgiving. read more

My boyfriend brought me here for my birthday. Our reservation was at 4:30 for the Sunset Dinner. We arrived half hour early so the hostess kindly suggested waiting in the bar area. We sat at the bar and Allen greeted us. After looking at the bar menu I had decided to order the Acai Margarita then my boyfriend asked if I wanted to try Dom Perignon, I never have so I said sure!! While Allen went to get our bottle ready, he had asked another bartender to make us a pre-cocktail (it had a tangerine taste) really good. Our bottle came out and Allen impressed us with the presentation and history of champagne making. He poured the champagne slowly so we can see and enjoy all the bubbles this fine champagne had. He even brought out a plate of fine cheese, some type of sesame brittle (sorry I forgot the name of it!) and bread to enjoy with our Dom Perignon. Allen sure had WOW'd us!! Our table was ready and the hostess walked us out to the patio area and Allen brought out our Dom. The sun was hot and they placed an umbrella at a perfect angle to provide shade for us. Our server was great (sorry didn't catch her name) and the food was beyond delicious! We were so impressed with the beautiful view and exceptional service that evening. We will definitely be back and we also talked about having our wedding dinner reception at this venue in the future. I'd say this was a pretty romantic place. It's classy yet relaxed. I love the food when I eat at fancier restaurants, but I always feel like I have to be "on my best behavior." There was none of that here, it was very relaxed but felt fancy at the same time which was nice. My steak was OK but not what I expected from a $30 steak. I didn't even box up what I couldn't finish. Yes this place is known for it's nice view sitting on top of a hill, but it's a view of jack shiet. Maybe because it was nighttime, but around it is just isolated farm hills, so at night, it's just a view of darkness. Went up and sat on their patio to watch fireworks on July 3 from the local High School... Atmosphere great. Service very good. Appetizers not impressed. But hear they are changing their menu. Their calamari was rubbery and under cooked. Shrimp cocktail tasted like a fish market smells.. very smelly and unfresh. Beef skewers were good and the sauce for them was awesome... so awesome we dipped the calamari in it to improve the taste LOL. Ill go again.. Hopefully the new menu will be better. read more

Excellent view of OC from atop the hill, a very romantic place to be with your SO and cozy with your close friends, gathering around the pitfire. I wouldn't come back here if not for the patio factor because the food simly suck. The menu is very limited and the food is just as ordinary as it gets even the desserts. I rather eat grilled cheese and spaghetti at home. And I have eaten here many time - was never impressed. Come here for the pretty amazing view of Orange County and the ocean (on clear days), but stay for the amazing array of brunch items and champagne. Proving once again that champagne can play an important role in any breakfast. There is enough variety here to make most people happy - breakfast items, carving stations, seafood, mexican food, sushi, bananas foster (holy unbelievables that guy whips up a mean bfoster), and enough desert items to send you home ready to burst. Valet only, but reasonable prices. Make a reservation and ask for a window table for brunch, sit back, and enjoy your mass consumption of bubbly and crab legs. read more

This review is for Sunday brunch. Took my girlfriend there for her bday and we loved it! First of all, the food all tasted great. They had a carving station with Lamb, Roast Beef, and Ham. Sushi station with great Seared Ahi Tuna, and Salmon! My fave. Crab legs and cold shrimp were a plenty there. I dont think I tasted one thing I didnt like. Only thing I didnt try was the omelette station because I over indulged at the pasta station. Dessert was an selection of small cake slices, cheesecake, chocolate fountain, and pastries. Our server was very friendly and even brought my girl a cake and candle. She was the best and due to the amount of endless champagne consumed I cant recall her name...Ulrike, L #487 is listed on my receipt so there you go! She was awesome!
