Was really craving some HK diner style food and this one was closeby. Came on a Friday for lunch and was immediately seated. A clean, unassuming vibe with that little bit of HK diner flare - I guess recently remodeled and I'd say it looks pretty good. FOOD: Baked fish in white sauce over rice. One of my favorite things. Comes out on a piping hot place with cheese that has crusted on the edges. Decent fish with a light batter deep fried, then baked over with cheese. Incredibly hot, big flavors and that nice cheese crust. White sauce was a bit hard to discern with all the other flavors going on and the fish batter softened up quickly, but this is still a classic and I will definitely be getting this again. Baked Ox tongue of spaghetti. Another classic that was done pretty well. Good, sweet red sauce with decent ox tongue. Soft enough and flavored well by the red sauce with standard spaghetti. Classic comfort food. Beef chow fun. Another classic and obviously done well here. Can't go wrong with this. Overall, a nice spot for your classic HK cafe style foods. Good service. I was also lucky enough to receive a free milk tea, which wasn't too sweet and quite nice with the rest of my meal. Simply because of the proximity and the nostalgia of this food, I will probably be frequenting this place. So, see you there! read more

I have always loved their baked spaghetti and baked pork chop rice but I MUST give a shout out to the salted yolk calamari that I've tried for the first time today because, OMG it was so heavenly. They have a rather simpler menu with just the anchor dishes as opposed to other HK cafes in the city with more extensive menus, but all the items I've had here have been bangers so that's all they need. Delicious and generous portions as well. The host was attentive and has that classic Cantonese restaurant runner charisma so he was really fun to chat with. I'm not really impressed as I've had better Chinese food. I cook myself as well, learned from my mom starting at age 8. My cousin owns a restaurant as well (extremely popular restaurant) But my SIL, that's another story. She doesn't cook nor does she try. And when she does try ... it's okay. And she heard about this new delivery app. She wanted to try it. It was extremely cheap she said. And I can tell it's cheap. The tray is a regular size tray. 5x8 trays you usually get. If it was just me eating by myself, I can be full. But if it was a grown man, he would need at least 3 orders. My SIL ordered sweet sour pork, chicken fried rice and beef & broccoli. The rice was hard. Not that it was undercooked but it was dried out hard. Sweet sour pork wasn't sweet and sour. It was more like sweet soy sauce and a bit of vinegar. We placed a pick up order for two baked porkchop over fried rice and it was decent. I've seen this as a staple in many HK cafes so I thought to give it a try. The pick up was quick and the food was still hot by the time we got home, a good 20 minute drive. They gave generous portions of the porkchop, about two large pieces and one with the bone in. They gave plenty of sauce which didn't have a lot of tomato flavor to it, but still pretty good. Well, I've successfully checked in at least one place during the shelter-in-place. Just when I always stayed home more and the next day I helped my family with more essential needs in Chinatown, I thought I never had a fair chance to check in one time. The one I checked in this time was Orchids Cafe. Alike other surviving places throughout the big city, this cafe was treated as a takeout stand. Good to have lunch in packages so I could take them home to eat later. Wonder if I can call one available staff member and ask that they accept cash so I can choose what's on the lunch menu next time. ;-) For lunchtime, I had Baked Fish in cheesy rice. This wasn't truly my best, but it's worth my palate. Four rich chunks of fried fish fillets with traces of cheese. Having traces of eggs mixed with rice looks more like fried rice (I barely eat whole eggs). Dairy is never my daily bread when it comes to tea restaurant meals. I wish to see plenty of other good options, especially vegan ones; just for me. But since the pandemic has reduce some food options, it's almost impossible to find the good stuff. It's still good that Orchids Cafe remains open, only for delivery or takeout. The way the cooks have cooked and plated every meal; I say it's particularly average. During the pandemic, I found this place for delivery. I enjoy Hong Kong style Cafe meals and I know that there will be something for you here. I love this Chinese dish that has running egg gravy over rice. Usually served with a protein like prawns, beef, sometimes chicken. I have tried this dish in many other places from Ranch 99, Chinatown, and now Ocean. I have to say, in my humble opinion, this is my hands down favorite! The gravy is seasoned better then the others and their gravy has the perfect consistency. Whenever I go here, I order that Salted Egg Yolk with Chicken Wings and the running egg gravy with beef over rice. A perfect combination. A very clean Hong Kong style cafe restaurant. The menu is quite extensive compared to other HK cafes. Parking is a nightmare here and I won't be coming back anytime soon. I gave their famous pork chop baked rice a try. The sauce was on a sweeter side, tasted like it was from Campbell tomato can soup rather vs. from scratch. However their pork chop was excellent, a juicy thick cut of meat that was nicely done. My husband ordered curry beef rice plate and that was tasty with a hint of spiciness. Orchids is a tricky one to review. I do not eat HK style food that much, so my experience is limited to compare Orchids to other places. I can only go based off of what I ordered: 1. Pork Chop w/Noodles - the taste was good and even though it looks heavily sauced, once you mix it all, it's the right amount of sauce. My big complaint was the quality of the pork chop. It was ALL fat and did not really remind me of pork.....so it weirded me out a bit.... 2. XLB - flavor was there, but just not enough soup in there 3. Milk Tea - not too sweet so I was digging it!!! Super, super delicious HK style food. We drive all the way across the city to eat here. From the fried rice to baked spaghetti to the shredded chicken salads are amazing. We usually dine at Koi Palace for dinner, but in comparison the fried rice, the salted egg pumpkin, the shredded chicken salad, the salt and pepper pork chops, and many other dishes are way superb here. A new addition to Ocean Ave. Came here with a group so we shared a bunch of things. I swear I didn't eat everything by myself... 1) Shredded chicken - Delicious. It was so good and it was the first item we received so it really set the mood because it was yummy. 2) Shanghai dumplings - This was decent. Read next food item. 3) Pork dumplings with corn - Ditch the shanghai dumplings and get this instead! The flavors of the dumplings really complimented each other plus the sauce that came with this was addicting. Hopefully not a sauce addict now... 4) Fried chicken wings - Bit into this and the juices were dripping out. It was so hot that I almost burned myself. Make sure to blow on this before eating. Nonetheless, the chicken is juicy and the skin is nice and crispy. Someone in my group ate one at the end of the meal and said it was still crispy. 5) Salted egg yolk and shrimp fried rice - Not too salty which I like for health and taste reasons. The shrimp was fat and the rice was flavorful. It has a slight grainy texture from the egg yolk, so avoid this if you do not like that texture. If you don't mind that texture, this is great to share. 6) Baked fish in cream sauce over rice - Let me tell you... the fish was the size of my face. They're generous with their portions, and also very generous with cheese. This dish was very creamy and filling, so if you're lactose.. do not get this dish or ask them for no cheese. Otherwise, the fish and flavor of the rice is absolutely delicious. 7) Hot milk tea - Giant cup full of milk tea. This was very tasty and you can tell it is not made from powder. Service was beyond great. There was a female and male server and they made sure everything was okay and cleared the table occasionally when we were done with dishes PLUS they did everything with a smile. I ordered three items for take-out on a Saturday early evening. It was my first time ordering from here and I've heard great things about Orchid's Cafe. Baked Spaghetti in Meat Sauce Half Hainanese Chicken Side Order of Hainan Rice The chicken and rice was delicious, wish there were peanuts but the chicken was perfectly cooked and chilled and the rice was perfectly seasoned and cooked. The baked spaghetti had a STRANGE smell to it. It looked PERFECTLY fine but there was a tangy, lemony, sour smell to it. So I thought something had gone bad but when I tasted it, it wasn't great, and lacked flavor, but I couldn't taste the sour taste, BUT you can smell it! In the end, I didn't get sick. I reheated it the next day, I can't deal with the smell. It's so weird and sour smelling. Ugh... I trekked across town for this too, it was very disappointing. Unlike most Hong Kong cafes, Orchids Cafe has a very tiny menu in comparison: instead of a menu book, you get a pamphlet. I came here for dinner last night and was a little sad to not see shrimp and scrambled egg over rice on the menu. In the end, my girlfriend and I ended up ordering the basil fried pork with rice and the Hainan chicken plate to split. The Hainan chicken plate here is better than Rooster and Rice in my opinion. Though the rice could be improved -- it's not quite as flavorful or moist as it could be, the ginger sauce here cannot be beat; hands down the best ginger mix I've had to date. The chicken itself is juicy and tender, and you get a rather large portion for $12 or so. It's worth calling out that the chicken is served cold here (which is actually pretty common for Hainan chicken, but might catch you off guard). If you're not a fan of cold chicken, I'd definitely avoid this plate. The "Thai style stir fried basil pork with rice" is such an accurate description of the dish. I misread it the first time thinking it was some sort of fried rice dish but it is certainly not that. This dish I'd describe as a large mound of rice topped with an egg, with a large side of wok-fried minced pork with wilted basil. I'm doing a poor job of selling the dish, but the dish was incredibly tasty. The sauce is similar to one you'd find with a sauteed eggplant dish at your typical Chinese restaurant. I think with this particular sauce, it's easy to get one that's over salted, but I found this one to have a good balance. The dish does come a little spicy, so be cautious of that before ordering this. Overall a pretty good meal for about $30. Note that parking in the area is street parking only. Late review for a great HK style cafe next to CCSF. We were doing a sneak-away dad's luncheon, but many of us have moved away from the city and were really feening for some HK style food but didn't want to deal with getting in and out of the Sunset/ Chinatown in time to pick up our kids from school. Orchid's cafe has everything you want when you want good Cantonese comfort food from salt and pepper ribs to steamed fish to baked chicken with a very generous amount of cheese and even pizzle if you're in the mood. The owner, Kevin is an awesome guy to chat with, and he makes the best damned milk tea bar none in the Bay- it's definitely going into our dad's group rotation of restaurants. read more
