I went there tonight and honestly was not my best experience first of all no one looked happy at all then when I had made my order then when I had asked for them to put ketchup and chili in my bag they said they had put them in there but when I got into my car I checked and when I opened my bag there were none so I walked back and he had the audacity to ask oh "Did you really open the bag rn" which was rude and I said yes I did and you lied to me about what you said was in there and then he wants to put the gloves he was cleaning with on to serve me my peppers so I asked him not to and just serve me with a utensil then when I got home to eat I felt like I was just eating the buns there was little to no chili one pickle and one tomato with the onions dropped in one spot so flavor there but you guys could step it read more

The A-OK was for the food. In fact, I've been a fan of Tommy's since high school 1968. Yeah, Beverly and Rampart. This store didn't get five stars because of poor service. I drove up to the drive through. I waited, and waited, and waited. I said hello several times. As I was very hungry and was shopping for the family, I parked the car and went inside. My favorite hamburger place of all time. Nothing beats the chlli. Just don't watch them cook because the place can be quite unsanitary. But I love this place so much that it still earns 5 stars. It has to be the bread, chili and the burger. I put fries in my burger to give it some girth. I lived on east lb and would visit this heart attack grill any time. There are many imitators (Tomy's, Thomas,etc...) but their is only one tommys. Go with the double cheeseburger with grilled onions. You won't regret it. Its messy, dirty and delicious. Parking is not much of a concern and it is on the outskirts of the ghettos. It's a guilty pleasure. read more

Ordered a chili hamburger tonight. One car in front of me. Waited 10 minutes for it-shut off engine. Girl came to window with my burger and realized that I was one car back, said "Oh" and went back for 3-4 minutes and brought out other people's food. I finally got my burger, luck warm. Pretty good food. The upgrade to 1/4 pound patties is worth it. The XL soda is gigantic. Good luck eating anything on a bun if it has chili; the bun will not make it. I didn't think the chili was that great but it's traditional so I won't knock it. Very nice staff. read more

I watched my son down a chili cheese burger and my husband a double of the same, me-I munched on my chicken, corn, and beans from El Pollo Loco. If you read my reviews, you know I don't do beef. Both Brian & Bob were happy campers trying to catch all the chili goodness falling out of their burger. They must have used a dozen napkins as the chili ran out from between the burger and the bun. As we sat at one of the tables in front of the walk-up stand we noticed an aqua vintage T-bird convertible....it totally completed our vision of what it must have been like hangin' at Tommy's when cruzin' was an American pastime. For a minute I thought I was back in the 50's...lol! I tried the fries; crispy, an average not super-sized portion-I shared with the guys. I've heard a lot of hype about this place on various TV shows so I was glad to finally hang out at Tommy's in LB, a bit closer than going into LA to the original location. Neither of the guys complained about heartburn so I'm assuming everything was good-I'm sure they'll be back-me, I'm just along for the ride. read more

I always thought chili in general was disgusting, especially on burgers or hot dogs! Until I finally gave into my husbands begging to try tommy burger and I've been hooked ever since. The burgers are amazing ( ask for hot peppers to put on them!!) the chili is good and I don't give a hoot that grease is everywhere. My first Tommy burger this week! I thought it was very good. Not too sloppy - the chili wasn't too much. The tomato was firm and fresh. The fries were good too. Being from Northern Cali, I often find it humorous how SoCal eateries are overblown. This hamburger place is just one more on my list. I had my first Tommy Burger in 1977, when my bro-in-law insisted I have one on my annual summer visit. I was 15. Fast forward to the present, and they are still the same, bland mediocre burgers they were back then. In LA, it's not so much what you eat, more like being able to let people KNOW were you eat. Not being trendy is cultural suicide in this land of "look, I go to all the popular spots." Back to the burger, the chili didn't do anything for me...sort of spicy, but not much else. I guess they want you to become so consumed with the name, they feel you won't notice the size of the patty. So... it's Father's Day. Sadly, my dad moved to Arizona and so we couldn't spend the day together. I thought to myself... where would my dad like to go if he could be in LA with me today and Tommy's was the first thing to pop into my head. Tommy's is his FAVORITE and one of the first places I remember him taking me to when I was little and my grandpa took him here when he was little. Tommy's is a tradition in our family and a special place for us all. I usually go here when I miss my dad and want to feel close to him. My dad grew up near the original in LA, but I am lucky I have one right here in LB! I even called him as I was eating to say "guess where I am right now" and to "share my meal with him". Awwwww cute, I know. Anyhow, I got the cheeseburger with everything (tomato, pickle, mustard, onion) on it, no fries (they actually aren't that special and I already felt guilty enough), and a cherry coke. I love that they have cherry coke. The single burger is kind of small...but you don't want to go bigger because then you really feel guilty :) I have also had the tamale and hot dog which are also great, but the cheeseburger is classic. I only come here alone because my boyfriend does not like the chili. I told him that it is almost blasphemous and that he is not allowed to eat here with me then. He thinks I am crazy, but I am that serious about it. It's like by him saying he doesn't like the chili he is talking smack about my dad. I know I am CRAZY. Yes, the "chili" is really only a mysterious, brown sludge... but it tastes amazing and is part of the true Tommy's experience. A burger without the chili is like pizza without cheese. You can now buy it to take back to your house and make your own burgers... but there is no fun in that. Beware that the burger is messy!! I need like 100 paper towels and 1/2 of it still falls onto my tray. This is where a fork, a few fries, or your finger is handy to scoop up what you have dropped. Open late and seating is only outside. This place is an institution of LA burgers. If you haven't been to Tommy's... you need to go NOW! COULDNT GET ORDER RIGHT TO SAVE LIVES IT SEEMED!! we go up to window to order and the cashier seems like a newbie but we were cool didn't mind, when ordering we had to clarify some items of our order 2-3 times which were 1. we wanted a regular cheeseburger (no chili) we said it twice and cashier even asked no chili? we said no chili just a regular cheeseburger, which they sell but she didn't seem to know that, 2) a plain chili cheese dog ( our exact words btw) cashier said plain chili cheese dog?, no tomato, pickles, onions? we said yes. 3) we wanted a chili cheeseburger with everything and add lettuce, she seemed to understand that didn't have that lost look on her face... outcome? we get home and sort out food and 1) we got a plain hamburger with only tomato,pickles, mustard. no cheese no lettuce sauce they put on regular cheeseburgers STRIKE 1.. 2) open up what us supposed to be plain chili cheese hot dog... this m*therf*cker was just a hot dog and bun nothing else!!!WTF!!?? STRIKE 2... 3) open the chili cheeseburger that's supposed to have lettuce, nope no lettuce.. STRIKE 3!!! all in 1 order. I really like Tommy's there's only 1 in long Beach so we gotta drive a bit to go since we live on other side of city and to get a cashier who couldn't understand shit about what a regular cheeseburger is or what a plain chili cheese hot dog is or how to put add lettuce on an order but said ok after asking 2-3 times and us being nice about repeating it. don't know if we'll go back again to have to deal with that again.. gave 2 stars because the food they did get right was awesome but I really hate places that can't get it right after it being repeated multiple times and like I said were nice about repeating... sucks! ruined dinner for a couple of people tonight read more
