We came back after a questionable first time visit a year ago and we were pleasantly surprised how fast they got their act together. We are now regulars! Every so often, we manage to get there for Happy Hour. We ordered our favorite Premium rolls and a large dinner salad. Many things wrong with this order. Avocado on salad was inedible as it was a long way from being ripe. "Premium" rolls arrived. Both rolls were served to us in a "clumped" presentation, not the beautiful streamlined presentation that we are used to. The pieces were quite small and had very little fish on top. They fell apart easily. Definitely, not up to the standard that we have come to expect from Ozen. So disappointed! Hopefully, this was a one-off. We, truly do not want to stop coming. read more

I was craving sushi after the gym but felt like eating outside. It's not often you get an amazing happy hour menu, lunch specials, and cute patio all in one. The waiter kindly cleaned my outdoor table and seat with a warm towel and service was great throughout my meal. It's just off the 210 freeway and really close to the foothills so the area is great for an outdoor lunch especially on these warmer days. I got the lunch special, 2 premium rolls for $27. The baked scallop roll was generously dressed and the Takati roll was a nice balance of sweet and spicy with salmon and crabmeat. I don't feel like drinking but they also had great drink specials. The first thing my friend and I noticed when we were seated was that our table were dirty, and our waitress had to quickly clean them off. As we browsed through the menu, we decided to try the Candy Roll and the Deluxe Sashimi Omakase. Since my friend can't eat shrimp, we were surprised when the Candy Roll arrived with shrimp tempura inside, which wasn't mentioned in the description. Thankfully, she's not allergic, so we just removed the shrimp from her pieces. The sashimi omakase looked appealing, but we found it odd that all the sashimi cuts had a really soft, almost soggy texture--except for the salmon, which had a nice chew. The salmon collar and salad that came with the sashimi were both delicious. The salmon collar was grilled to perfection, with a good amount of meat and a nicely charred, peppery flavor. I need to start with this; I'm conflicted. Let's begin with the restaurant itself. It's tucked into a small strip mall just north of the 210. Parking is tight close to the store front, but nothing too bad if you don't mind a very small walk. The interior is modern-ish, borrowing from common mainstream sushi restaurants you can find anywhere in SoCal these days. Decor is light colored wood tones and ample, if subdued lighting. Staff at the front of house was comprised of four waiters/greeters/bussers that were left to handle everything from bar duty, serving, clearing tables, taking care of receipts, and seating new guests. This will be a problem later on. The food is 10/10. We had the bluefin toro sashimi, yellowtail carpaccio, albacore wrap, and fire house roll. The toro came with real wasabi. All of the food was amazing. Not just for the IE, like some of the best sushi you can get. It easily punches above its weight. Now to the bad. The staff were struggling to keep up with the steady stream of customers. Several tables near my wife and I went uncleared after the previous guests left and our table was cleared because we arrived. We ordered three items then added another, and wanted to order more but we were simply forgotten by the staff. We waited about 20 minutes for our waiter to notice us again and opted for the check. We waited another 15 minutes to get his attention again (he went into the kitchen for most of that time) and basically acted as if we were inconveniencing him for trying to pay. I need to point out that as soon as he handed me the bill I had my card out, and the waiters had the point of sale machine with them. He could have cashed me out at the same time he handed me the check. Instead, my wife and I waited 35+ minutes trying to get someone's attention to first try and spend more money, and after that didn't work, trying to leave. The food is amazing. The service was good at first and then slowly fell off a cliff. To anyone reading this, if you get there when it isn't busy, I'm sure you'll have a great time. Visiting on a Saturday night? You might not be so lucky. My advice to the owner(s)/manager(s); you need someone running the front of house, controlling the flow of customers so that your wait staff doesn't get overwhelmed. I strongly suspect the reason my waiter left before letting me cash out is because he had several other tables and a line of customers waiting to be seated with no one clearing tables. You may not need it at midday on a Tuesday, but Friday/Saturday nights, you absolutely do. If my wife and I visit again, it might be during a slower time of day. Something to consider, the sushi scene in SoCal is crowded. You have good food, but so do others, with more consistent service. read more

I'm from the IE but lived in SF for the past 4 years so since moving back I've been on the hunt for sushi that hits. I've tried so many in the area and this is one of the few that scratches that itch for me. I ordered takeout, but dine-in looks pretty clean and cozy. I came here with family to celebrate a birthday. Please be advised that parking is terrible. It's in a busy shopping center and it's very difficult to find parking. To make matters worse, the restaurant is located next to an urgent care. Luckily, we were able to find a spot not far from the restaurant. Upon arrival, we were promptly greeted. I observed only a handful of staff, and immediately thought "oh great, service is going to be slow." It took a while for us to get our drinks, but what I really liked was that the server said "thank you for your patience," acknowledging that there was a bit of a wait. After we placed our orders, we got our meals quickly. I ordered the entree with 2 sides. The portions were huge. I even had to pack some to go. The food was flavorful and everyone liked what they ordered. The staff made sure to clear the empty dishes from the table, and made us feel welcome. The server noticed a discrepancy with the check, and she immediately took care of the issue. My only complaint, and it is minor, is that we were sat by the door, so every time it opened, the cold air would come straight to us. I'm sure they would have moved us if I had asked. We had a pretty disappointing experience today. I accidentally spilled my drink, and it took a long time for anyone to come check on us. When they finally did, they cleaned the table but didn't offer napkins or even a new straw. What made it more frustrating was that our server seemed much more attentive to other tables around us, while we were pretty much overlooked the entire time. I have been to this place several times and this time the service was so bad, not sure I will ever return. Our server was wearing round gold rimmed glasses no name tag, no manager around, and totally ignored us. He had 3 tables the other occupied tables had all male customers. Have no clue if because we were female we were ignored but it felt like it was the case. The males were seated after us and orders taken food came out they were being asked if they needed anything else. Ordered through Uber Eats. Tempura Udon - Noodles were nicely tug-chewy and firm. The soup was complex and full of flavor and not overly salty. The tempura shrimp was the perfect crunch - we have an air fryer - a necessity when you frequent take home food. The tempura sauce was a bit sweet but I think it was intentional so we could add soy sauce and ginger and wasabi to it - turned out to be an amazing tempura sauce reminiscent of the 90's Beni Hana Tempura dipping sauce. It was the perfect soup for a cold January. Oh and kudos to the way it was packaged. The noodles were in the same container as the soup but elevated in a separate container so the steam of the soup would keep the noodles from sticking to each other! Vietnamese Pho places should take a page out of Ozen's Japanese playbook on this. Gotta love Japanese innovation. Grilled Yellow Tail collar bone - didn't expect this to be fresh and without an after taste just to manage my expectations but it turns out to be a pleaser with just the right amount of char! Great job in quality of raw ingredients and preparation. Tempura mix - Shrimp with Vegetables. Same comment on the tempura. The vegetables also had the perfect batter crunch and may have been blanched before frying - I'm guessing. Enjoyed every bite of the carrots, string beans, broccoli, sweet potato and squash. California roll - We we're lucky to have timed our order with their buy one get one free - so we got the full order of eight pcs (not the appetizer which has 6pcs) and got another 8 for free. We ordered the lobster dynamite which we poured on top of the California rolls evenly. We have our own stash of Japanese mayo so we sparingly added some to give more texture. What a winner! I like it spicy so I added some of our sriracha on it as well - Oh my. This was our test run of the Ozen restaurant. We definitely have to go there for a major Japanese craving so I have my eye on the supreme chirashi, uni noodles with extra Uni and Japanese scallops. Can't wait. The food was really good and fresh. We had a classic mojito and a classic margarita which were both good. The dressing on the house salad is DELICIOUS! It's so good, I could drink it!
