It breaks my heart writing this updated review but, sadly this place has changed. I'm honestly not even sure it's the same family that owns the restaurant because I don't see any familiar faces anymore & the food is very different. This used to be my FAVORITE restaurant in SF but, unfortunately that's not the case anymore. From the moment my family & I first walked in to this Outer Richmond gem, KiKi, Phillip, & the rest of the original family made us feel like one of their own. Sadly, KiKi has moved on & we haven't seen Phillip in a long time. To start, the service now is just sub par. Not very friendly, inattentive, & no personality. I use to rave to everyone, "you have to try this place, their food is delicious, fresh, & consistently good!" Now, the dishes are oily, wayyyy over salted, & just not fresh. Our soup even came out to the table barely warm. I ordered yellow curry tonight one of my favorite dishes & aside from being way too salty, it was thick & gritty. We also ordered cashew beef, another favorite, that was oily, salty, & the onions were basically raw. My husband ordered his favorite salmon & pineapple curry & the flavor was totally off aside from also being too salty & gritty (& I'm a salt lover!). Best I can say is that the salmon was cooked to perfection. But, the MOST frustrating part especially dining with a two & a half year old is that my husband & daughter didn't receive their entrees until about 40 MINUTES after I received mine! We were there almost 2 hours which is unheard of when it comes to us dining out. This is honestly something we've never experienced before here, we actually use to rave about how fast the service was. Sorry...very sadly sorry to say that we will not be dining here anymore & in search of a new Thai/Burmese fusion restaurant to call home. Roti Palata is SO delicious. It's like a flatbread but incredibly crispy and light. We had it with curry chicken and it was great. Sweet and sour chicken was beautifully presented and filled with flavor. The coconut rice is the best I have ever had. The rice was fluffy and flavorful. The service is great! It seemed like there was only one person for the whole restaurant but he was super nice and fast service. We definitely appreciate that he checked to make sure our food was good. I have to knock off a star because this place CAN be delicious but it's very inconsistent. I don't know if they rotate chefs or if they don't bother using the same recipe, but it seems like the entrees can change drastically from one order to the next. We've had amazing pad Thai (best we've ever had) and then average pad Thai that was like a completely different meal. The first few times I had the yellow curry it was AMAZING and one of the best curries I've had in SF, but the last time I had it it was just mediocre and was a completely different consistency and flavor. One of my favorite Go-To spots. The tea leaf salad, pumpkin curry, and Thai fried rice are consistently winners. I also get garlic string beans, eggplant, and the palata. Everything is good. The service is good. The ambiance is cute and cozy. Parking is challenging sometimes, but not enough to deter a visit. Oh, I also recommend the Burmese hot tea. read more

We stopped here randomly on our SF trip and chose the lamb biryani and lamb curry (both chosen based on the smells emanating from the tiny but powerful kitchen) and were very pleased! The waiter was patient and helpful as I asked a thousand and one questions about the menu. The lamb was incredibly tender, and the rice was quite flavorful. If you're used to or are in want of Indian biryani, this isn't quite as spicy. However, the flavor profile is unique and warrants a return trip! read more

My wife and I had a terrific lunch here. It was the best Burmese food that we've had since we lived in Singapore and visited Myanmar in 2015. For starters we had the stuffed tofu (photo attached). The tofu was fried to a crisp and stuffed with cabbage. It had the right amount of crunch and combination of flavors and textures to it. We had sauteed eggplant with dried shrimp and onion in a garlic spicy sauce. This dish was delicious. Finally, we had the mohinga, which had rice noodle, catfish, lemongrass, onion, garlic, and cilantro. It was a great rendering of a traditional Burmese dish. The ambience of the restaurant was relaxed and down to earth. The service was overstretched as there was only one waiter in the restaurant --- but that waiter managed very well given the number of guests he was serving. The price of the food, especially given its high quality, was very reasonable. (They do have a Thai menu but we only tried the Burmese food.) I will definitely try to visit again. read more

Family run seeming place, Pagan is very clean and friendly with warm lighting and I pressured service. Our Tea Leaf Salad could have used a few more tea leaves but otherwise fresh and good. Palata was crisp on the outside and nicely layered. SaMusa Soup had excellent broth and flavor though a bit on the salty side. Burmese Curry Catfish was tangy with additional pleasant savory flavors and good broth. Coconut rice - well made. The background hum of a kitchen fan could go ... a bit of soft music of some kind instead of it would be nice. read more

Amazing food!! This place is very vegetarian friendly. We got the the Stuffed Tofu which blew our minds!!! It was super flavorful. I got the Spicy String Beans with tofu. Which was actually pretty spicy in a chili sauce and also had an amazing and unique flavor. We also got the Pad See Ew with tofu and also Crab Pad Thai (I was happy to see a lot of crab). My friends and I came here after our short beach adventure at lands end since it was only 2 minutes away. We decided to call for takeout and it only took 10-15 minutes before our order was ready (great turnaround time!). My friends ordered the popular noodle salad while I got the chicken curry noodles and they were absolutely delicious!! The moh hinga had an incredible depth to it, and the sauces of the egg curry and pan fried okra prawn were distinct and indescribably delicious. So far I've only tried their Burmese food. We had the Nan Pia Dok (flat flour noodles in curry sauce) and the Burmese Style Curry with chicken. I liked the noodles and it's different tasting than other standard Asian cuisine. I wished there was more of it. The Burmese curry was ok. It was a bit oily and the flavor was not as robust as other curries. I'd like to come back to try their Thai food. The restaurant is small and they were pretty busy on a weekend night. I have been coming to this restaurant for quite sometime, I would say that the food is not as good as it was in the past. Ordered pagan curry and it was very oily, ordered the chicken and string beans and the portions are now extremely small. Mention to the waiter and he would make sure that he would look at it before picking it up, well now the containers are smaller than before so they can fill it up, but even the small containers was not full. My (very picky) 8 YO son and I came here for dinner a few weeks back. We had a server named Phillip, who gave us exceptionally kind and patient service. We modified most of what we ordered to accommodate my kid, and he graciously took good care of us. The food was delicious, even simplified for a little kid. The chicken broth was rich and full flavorful, The fried tofu was light and crispy, and The dish I ordered for myself (noodles W chicken) had a nuanced deliciousness that reminded my why this restaurant has been a local favorite for so long. This Burmese/Thai restaurant is located right outside the entrance for the Legion of Honor and Lands End. After an adventurous exploration of Lands End, we were in the need for some lunch. PARKING + AMBIENCE Street parking only, which was very difficult to find, we were circling the surrounding streets for about 10-15 minutes. It's a small place with decent amount of seating, mostly geared towards small parties. The decor is Burmese/Thai traditional and old fashioned with a conversational ambience between parties. FOOD I ordered the Ong No Kaw Soi ($11) which is Coconut Chicken Noodle Soup. This was exactly what I was craving for and hit the spot. The noodles were well cooked and delicious. I also enjoyed the coconut flavor and creamy texture of the broth. The portions are also quite large, you won't be hungry after eating here. SERVICE Decent customer service and generally friendly staff. They were fast and had no problems with us splitting the bill on our cards. It was a 10 min wait for seating since it was a packed house. CONCLUSION A decent Burmese/Thai restaurant in San Francisco at solid price. They have a large selection of items on their menu, I would recommend any noodle dishes. This is my family's favorite restaurant in the city! We love to go to the park across the street for our daughter and have dinner here after. By far, my favorite dish is the salmon pineapple curry with a side of coconut rice. However, we also enjoy the samusas, tea leaf salad, samusa soup, potato poodi, and so much more! KiKi always takes great care of us as the service is welcoming and attentive. The ambiance is intimate and makes you feel like you are one of the family. Solid Burmese food at a decent (SF-adj) price. Pagan is a relatively small restaurant geared towards 2-4 person parties. On Saturday at 1pm we had about a 15 min wait for party of 2. I ordered the roti palata which is a fried dough flat bread with chicken curry and my friend got the ong no kaw soi which is a noodle dish with a coconut broth. Although my dish was called an appetizer the serving size was more than enough with flat bread reminiscent of Chinese scallion pancakes and an evenly spices chicken curry with potatoes. The curry is like a mix of Thai and Indian. My friends dish I found a little bland but the noodles were well cooked and the broth had a nice creamy texture. read more

2.5 STARS Got take out from here yesterday. The restaurant has both a Burmese menu and a Thai menu which I found interesting. Not being very familiar with Burmese food, I decided to try the following: Burmese green papaya salad: I'm a huge fan of Lao style papaya salad so I thought I'd like this one. The stinkier and spicier the papaya salad, the better! Since they listed grounded shrimps as an ingredient, I figured it'd be close to the Lao style. Instead I just found this salad had a super powdery taste to it which was disappointing. We also ordered it extra spicy and the dish wasn't even remotely spicy. Burmese beef kebat: I randomly picked this dish since I wanted to try another Burmese dish. I love beef and mint, so I thought this would have been a good choice. Again I found this dish to be super powdery. I'm not sure what they added to the Burmese dishes to make the texture and taste so powdery, but it was a turnoff. I am super familiar with Thai food, which was the reason I came here. We got the following: Thai tom yum with shrimp: Good tom yum to me is spicy and sour. Especially if I order it extra spicy. This tom yum was super sweet! Tried adding lime and lime leaves to doctor it up, but this soup was more of a sweet and sour soup. I did not like this at all. Thai green curry with chicken: Curry was a lot runnier than I'm used to. Typically I like my curry thicker, but this almost had the consistency of a soup. Regardless the curry did have flavor. I did wish it was spicier since I ordered it extra spicy. Thai fried rice with pork: A good fried rice. The pork had a nice flavor. Pad thai: Typically the pad thais I've had have a citrus element to them which I love eith the bean sprouts. This pad thai just reminded me of chinese noodles. Almost like a chow fun. Though it had flavor and I liked the dish, it wasn't what I expected. I feel bad giving this place 2.5 stars (rounded up to 3), since it seems like a nice little family establishment, but there were just too many misses to justify anything higher. Maybe I caught them on an off day, but I can't get over the powdery tastes of the Burmese dishes and the lack of spice when I ordered everything extra spicy in the Thai dishes. read more

Why did it take us so long to try this place out?! Pagan Restaurant exceeded our expectations for Burmese/Thai food. I like how there are separate menus for Thai and Burmese cuisine that can be found online, it's neat to see which one belongs to which cuisine! We ordered... Thai: Chicken pad thai Papaya salad Spicy basil with crispy pork Burmese: Tea leaf salad The tea leaf salad was just okay (a bit too much lettuce imo) and the pad thai was standard, but holy smokes!!!!!! The spicy basil with crispy pork belly!!! This was the star of the show. And the acidic, fresh papaya salad paired so nicely with the sweet, savory flavors of the pork belly. Overall, the prices are in line with what one would expect from SF takeout ($60 total), and the portions were not very big (I mean, I would've loved a bigger container of that succulent pork dish!). We ordered a bunch of stuff: We got iced water - fine Roti Palata $8.5 - many pan-fried roti kinda thick w/ side of curry chicken w/ potatoes. Very filling dish. Chicken Curry Noodle Soup $8.25 - it's a big bowl feeds 2 people. It was ok, next time I'd ask for no raw onions. Tea Leaf Salad $7.95- not much tea leaf. They mix it up for you. I can mix up my own salad really I can. Just ok. Curry pork $9 - thick chunks of pork in the same or similar curry sauce from the roti palata. Just ok. Bathroom - B. went & said it's through the kitchen & very nice. I still didn't use it. $33.70 + $2.86 tax = $36.56 before tip. Charged the meal. read more

I finally got to go here after a visit to the Legion of Honor up the hill. I was craving garlic noodles, and luckily it was on their menu. I also ordered the Thai iced tea, and my roommate and I shared some egg rolls. The egg rolls were fried to perfection and the veggies inside were fresh and crispy. The garlic noodles were delicious-not too oily with just the right amount of garlic. The sweetness in the iced tea was balanced. It didn't take long to get a table or the food, but it did take awhile to place our order. The restaurant is small, but there was only one person handling the floor. I ended up going with the Coconut Curry Chicken Noodles, which were a pleasant surprise that gave a subtle sweetness that worked well with the noodles and chicken. The crispy onion adds texture to each bite. The soup is perfect for the chilly SF weather. I don't get to the Legion of Honor that often, but when I do, finding nearby food places can be slim pickings. Right at the foot of the entrance, this joint offers up some tasty Burmese options. Apparently they have Thai too, but Thai is so ubiquitous, I didn't bother. Couldn't have been happier with my Burmese dishes though. Tea Leaf Salad: Always a highlight of a Burmese meal. The funky fermented tea leaves with all the crunchy fried bits make regular lettuce and tomatoes taste amazing. I especially like how they mix it table side, as if it's steak tartare at a fancy French restaurant. Burmese Roti Palata: This is a HUGE appetizer. So much fry bread, there is no way that 2 people can finish this and eat a regular meal afterwards. The roti wasn't as a thin as the Malaysian versions I've had. Kind of remind me of a Chinese scallion pancake, without any scallions. The first piece is so rich and tasty, especially dipping in the curry. But eating a 2nd or 3rd piece makes you feel kinda gross since it is so greasy. Shwe Taung Kauswer: Another cool application of table side mixing. Hearty noodles and a rich coconut sauce with chicken, herbs and fried bits. Super tasty. Seemed like normal sized portion (unlike the roti palata). read more

Honestly the worst crab meat fried rice I've ever had. They charged me $18 for crab fried rice take out and there is barely any crab meat. Just looks like they sprinkled crab meat as decoration.
