I've been reluctant to write a review, since this is one of the best kept secrets in the Lower Haight. They have an amazing garlic paste reminiscent of that famous place in LA, and I always get it with the chicken rotisserie meal. Get the half chicken if you are a big eater. The beef and lamb shawarma platters and also really good My other favorite thing is the kibbi, which is sort of a deep fried savory pastry filled with meat. Sometimes you can see the owners in the back rolling the kibbi by hand. It is always so crispy and juicy on the inside and I've never seen it served anywhere else in the city. On top of that, the owner is super nice. We usually come here with our dog, and there are a couple tables outside the front of the restaurant. I've only had delivery from here so I can't speak to the interior/service, etc, but even as delivery, the food is delicious. The chicken shawarma is so unbelievably tender and juicy, and the seasoning is perfect. If this is what it's like an hour out of the kitchen, I can't imagine how good it is immediate and fresh. The beef shawarma is tasty, though not as tender. As a treat, I decided to indulge and get some kunafa for dessert (if the name looks unfamiliar, it could be the spelling--there are many spelling variations). I looooooove kunafa, probably because any pastry stuffed with soft cheese is just delicious to my mouth. Palmyra's kunafa is a tad too sweet in the syrup, but the pistachio flavor is rich and fragrant. I prefer shreds of phyllo dough on the kunafa, but this kunafa was still pretty good and hit the spot for a foodie like me who's rather obsessed with this dessert. :) read more

Not only were our portions extremely small, the meat was dry and unseasoned, along with a piece of soggy pita bread. Palmyra is a Lower Haight staple for a quick meal with friends or--as is usually the case for me--take-out. I am obsessed with Palmyra. I eat Palmyra at least once a week. I used to gravitate toward the chicken shawarma platter, which consists of generous portions of chicken shawarma, pita bread, cucumber/tomato salad, and hummus, all of which I like to eat with Palmyra's garlic sauce. However, my new favorite is the chicken kebab. The meat is made so well--juicy, tender, and perfectly lightly charred on the outside. Additionally, the saffron rice is tasty, and the garlic sauce is amazing. If you want to end with dessert, get the baklava, or if you want something a little different, the kanafeh. It's delicious when heated up and disappointingly hard to find in the city. Finally, apart from the food, the people here are awesome--reliably on time with your order, kind, friendly, and super accommodating. Can't say enough about my love for this place. read more

How on Earth this place only has four stars is beyond me. I've written about Palmyra before, and five years on it is still as amazing as it was the first time I stumbled on it in the midst of the worst Big Bus Tour I've ever been a part of. My wife and I come to San Francisco once a year, and we literally plan our time out here around a stop here. I was there again today, and I'm always worried the reality won't match up to my memory, but I needn't - it's so incredible. Grape leaves? As good as I've had this side of Jerusalem. The lamb schwarma melts in your mouth. My wife had her usual mezza plate, and honest to God it never disappoints. If you live in San Francisco and like Middle Eastern food, and you haven't eaten here, do yourself a favor and do it. You will not be sorry. Holy Moses, it is SO good. read more

We ordered sooo much food! For 2. But we had just come back from a bike ride and were hungry! Ordered a whole chicken, tabouli, hummus, fries, rice and falafel. Upon entering, it seemed like a friendly family owned restaurant. They have about 6 tables inside which can fit parties of at least 4. The staff was very friendly and service was good. We did not have to wait long for our order which was good cuz we were starving! The chicken was moist and nice but I feel like it could have used a little bit more flavor. I felt like the flavor was just the chicken skin...and not the actual chicken. The falafels were good and not too dry they were a little different than other falafels I have tried but in a good way. The hummus was a bit too creamy for me but again was not bad. We liked it. The tabouli was really good and we finished that. The rice was so good! Soft, nice texture and flavor. We decided to try their knafeh also. I have really high standards for knafeh since going to turkey and this didn't meet my expectations. It was alright but I have high expectations. Try their mezze platter and falafel wrap for vegetarian options. They also serve kunefe, a delicious Middle Eastern dessert (yet i would recommend eating kunefe at the restaurant rather than ordering it as you should eat it while it is still hot). My friend and I were feeling some Greek for dinner, so we did what any common-sensed person would do and searched the likes of Yelp to find a good Greek place nearby. Upon entering Palmyra, you can tell a ton of people come by to do pick-up (this review will be based on our dine-in experience). The place was packed, which was definitely a good sign! Since there's no host, but just people at the register, the distinguishing between dining in and take out can be confusing. You order at the register, and they serve to your table (easy since the place isn't so big). We weren't brought any water, but the service was prompt and friendly. No qualms there. The 3 stars goes entirely to the falafel -- my friend and I agreed it was the best falafel we've ever had. They add sesame seeds on top, which adds good texture and flavor. The reason for knocking off 2 stars was 'cause of the other 2 dishes we had: spinach pie & hummus + pita. The hummus and spinach pie were tangy and sour, the pita was cold (wish it was warm or something), and the spinach pie could've done with more cheese. It seems like this place is a hit to other people though, so we'll try to order other options possibly if we come back (and definitely get more of those falafels). read more
