I've only got a couple dozen people following what I write... and I haven't written in months, so sitting at my keyboard with my carefully organized thoughts about last night's dinner at Parm seems moderately silly. That aside, I'm going to be careful here. Parm has promise. I'd like to see this location succeed. Battery Park restaurants seem to have difficulties.
The problems started before we arrived at the restaurant. I called to see if we needed a reservation for two (and a toddler) for 6:30 on a Saturday. BPC tends to get a little emptied out on the weekends. Even with Parm being across the street from a movie theatre, I didn't really think it would be necessary. Still, we were going to have our toddler with us. I also wanted to make sure the restaurant had a high chair for her, so I called.
Parm's calls are answered by an automated system that directs you to their website. Big mistake. The restaurant business is as much about service as it is food. What if there are questions, or special requests? I went to the website. The reservation asks you for any special notes or requests for your party. However, when you click on the link to finalize the reservation, you are transported to OpenTable. OpenTable wasn't working very well last night. So, I got back on the phone to see if I could get a live human being on the other end. There was an option to ask questions. Once I pressed for that option, I waited on hold- listening to Sinatra- for a LONG time. I finally decided to try OpenTable again, this time making it through. No one ever answered my call.
Thank goodness we did have that reservation because there was a LONG wait for anyone who didn't navigate the online tsuris that comes with booking a table at Parm. We saw people there when we arrived who were just getting seated 90 minutes later, as we were leaving, despite tables sitting empty for a while. That's another story and it's not mine.
We were seated immediately. There was a highchair. Luke warm tap water filled our glasses quickly and repeatedly. Things were working. The menu is very short and basic. Our server took our order quickly and our appetizers arrived within minutes- a favorable thing when you have a young child dining with you. The food is fine. It doesn't blow the doors off of anything, but it is good enough and priced fairly enough to get diners to return.
Bread (and olive oil) followed after the appetizers- a misstep but not a catastrophe. Once the appetizers were cleared we then sat and waited 50 minutes for our entrees. At one point- 30 minutes into the wait- our server came to our table and asked: "you had your entrees, right?" No. We hadn't. Ten or 15 minutes later, I asked our server: "have they (the kitchen) forgotten about us?" She apologized and told us the kitchen was a little backed up.
One would think that with SO many people waiting for a table, they'd make a point of serving the entrees a bit on the faster side, so as to flip the table sooner and seat the people standing by the bar (there were 50% more people waiting than there were bar stools). We watched the people at the table next to ours- also with a toddler- get seated after us, order, eat, and leave, before we ever saw our entrees. Another interesting side note: once those people left, that table sat empty for the rest of our time at Parm, despite all the people waiting to be seated. Something's amiss here.
The entrees eventually did arrive. By that point the baby had fallen asleep. Good thing. That could have gone another way. The food was hot (as though the plates hadn't been sitting under a heating lamp waiting to be served). The portions were on the heavy side- something we appreciate. A little salty, but good. We ordered chicken parm and eggplant parm. You sort of have to- there are only a handful of entrees to chose from.
Now, Parm seems to want to be known for its Ice Cream Cakes. Odd for an Italian restaurant. Odder in the Winter. But it was unseasonably warm last night. Also, we spent all of our time while waiting for our entrees staring at a big board with all of the restaurant's many Ice Cream Cake flavors. We don't often order desserts, but after an hour+ with the Ice Cream Cake menu in our face, there were a couple of flavors we were willing to try. The problem is, none were available. When our server returned to our table after our entrees were cleared to ask if we wanted dessert, she informed us they only had THREE of the MANY flavors listed on the board. We passed.
When the server returned with our check she informed us that our entrees had been "comped" because of the wait. We appreciated this. However, we'd rather that not be necessary. Parm is not exactly new anymore. Not for a New York City restaurant with two sister locations. These kinks should not be happening. Not for a restaurant that wants to survive in profitability. We'll return, I suppose. If they're still there. read more
