My wife and I took a weekend in Memphis and stayed at the River Inn which houses Paulette's. The visit was not a great one. We were held in their waiting area for 40 minutes after our reservation time due to "staffing issues". Once seated our waiter was great but obviously stressed and overwhelmed. We informed him that we were not in an hurry just looking forward to a great meal. We ordered a nice bottle of Silver Oak Cab, which was the highlight of the meal / night. I ordered Crab cakes for a starter and my wife ordered the wedge salad. The salad came out warm and without blue cheese crumbles. My crab cakes were small and cold, it appeared they sat for awhile in the kitchen. For the main dish I ordered the Paulette's Filet while my wife ordered the regular filet. Neither meal was very good. My wife's filet was a poor cut, tough and stringy. The Paulette's filet was drowning in a butter cream sauce that was cool and badly flavored. I am sure this restaurant was good in its prime but appears to be declining. The general upkeep was substandard for a restaurant of this price range. There was notable dust on the paintings and fixtures and the carpet was stained in several places. We felt sorry for the wait staff as they were trying very hard to make the experience a good one but could not keep up. A gentleman who appeared to be a manager was seen scowling and very disinterested in helping out. I can not recommend this restaurant to anyone. There are many fine places in Memphis and I would say fine one, not this one. read more

I don't mind paying for food as long as the product is worth the price tag. This was not it. To top it off she got food poisoning from here and has been sick ever since we left. Whether it was the kitchen or the service, this was one of the worst restaurant experiences we have had for some time. The food was good when it finally arrived. One of the staff came out to apologize for the wait and said we would all receive free desserts. They then brought out the dessert menu and no one came back to take that order for 15 minutes and no one ever came back. We visited here on Friday February 13th for my 42nd Birthday and I was very disappointed. We wasnt aware that they one was serving food from a pre planned Valentine's Day menu and the options was limited. Since I really only went for the Salmon ( as a recommendation) but we was here so we decided to give it a try and this place was very expensive for mediocre food ! The Dinner was $68 per person and everyone had to pay or pay and additional $40 for split plate charge ( which is outrageous I think) but let's talk about the food 1) we did crab cakes as an appetizer which was very cold , so we sent them back and they was much better the second time go round but still nothing great . 2) I ordered the filet for entree for $68 plus the additional $40 to share since I was only able to eat seafood but I was still charged for tasting my husband steak and it's was not even split or on a second plate when brought out to us but the steak was just okay , I had better at Bone fish grill . And lastly 3) was dessert which consisted of a strawberry crepe but was more like a soggy wet piece of bread with strawberries and whip cream . I'm sorry but the only thing good here was the cocktails. This place was over priced and had very limited menu options and no substitutions , not even a extra side to order. This was my first and final time here . I appreciate the hospitality but this was not worth a $590 check for 4 adults and 1 child which we was forced to pay $68 for his meal as well and he didn't even eat nor like the food ... For a Good steak , I would stick to Capital Grille or Ruth Chris !! read more

So, we love Paulette's food, most of the time. We have been long time customers of Paulette's, even during the pandemic. However, all of that is about to change, thanks to a recent visit we had. We came in, sat at the bar and ordered drinks and a meal. Things were great, food was amazing... paid the bill and was about to leave. Appears you the bartender Lee, wasn't happy with his tip. He made his grievances known... I immediately looked at my bill and pondered if I had done a decent job tipping... I'm not good at math but I'm not awful. I tipped 20% and after having had a few drinks maybe I could of been more generous, but I had a few drinks. However, I'd of happily tipped more and have in the past and I still don't think I should of recurved such an outspoken rage from Mr. Lee. Just saying... but it's all good. Oh where to begin...took my girlfriend here for Valentine's Day, thinking I couldn't go wrong with "Memphis Institution." Boy was I wrong. The only thing worse than the food was the service. The waiter conceded in the first thirty seconds that "the kitchen is churning out meals," meaning that quality might be greatly affected--and it was. My girlfriend discovered 7 bones in her fish fillet within the first four bites. After battling through the meal, the bus boy, real impertinent fellow, expected us to do his job for him. Had the Paulette's steak and it was under-cooked (I asked for medium rare--it was too rare), no sear on the meat, just a gray color outside. My mom has talked about Paulette's as long as I can remember. She used to go when it was in the old location in midtown. She would rave about the beef bourguignon and the crepes. Well I decided to take my mom and sister (who flew in from out of town) here for brunch before a musical at the Orpheum. The place is beautiful. It has a sort of homey feel and yet has some elegant touches. Fresh flowers, beautiful French doors, etc. Well that is where the nice part ends. Our server got our order and everything seemed to be going ok. My sister asked that her dish have the butter sauce on the side. That was our only special request. Well...then the food came. And her dish had no vegetables at all and sauce all over it. So she asked for it to be changed. The guy who brought our food wasn't our waiter and was not apologetic or even really concerned. Well here came the dish back about 10 mins later from our server. The butter was on the side, but as he shakily lowered the dish onto the table, he sloshed it onto the plate. Ok whatevs. Just kinda made it useless getting it on the side, but no biggie. Then came the part that infuriated me. We all noticed it was still missing the asparagus. So I said, "I think she is missing her asparagus." He told us that it was underneath the fish. Underneath this very small piece of red fish with barely any crabmeat or potatoes. I must have been red in the face for a good minute. My sis lifted up her fish and showed him that nothing was there. She eventually got her asparagus. But not really an apology for messing up her dish twice. I had some dry chicken on a bed of bland rice that Uncle Ben could microwave better. The onion and pepper on my skewered chicken was chopped into huge pieces that would have never cooked through. My mom had an extremely dry chicken crepe that she had to use my sister's lemon burre blanc on to moisten it up a bit. Oh and the popovers were almost burnt. They bring them to every table. Every day. How can they screw them up? Better yet, how could they look at them and say they were ok to serve? It was kind of a nutty experience. I was so disappointed that I wasted our afternoon here. We left hungry and had to grab snacks at Walgreens. I would rather have eaten there. read more

We can now understand how the restaurant has 3.5 stars although some folks might have had a better experience. The food was actually pretty tasty however the service was so poor that it the food could not make up the difference. Our waiter started to take our order but excused himself partway through and left the table. When he came back he listed the specials and then excused himself again. We have no idea where he went. The hostess came and poured our water and apologized for the wait. The waiter came back after 10 mins, took our food order and walked away. We caught him and asked about ordering drinks. "so what you want... no, we don't have that. Get something else." The popovers were decent but lightly burned without much flavor. The crepes were filling and the lamb chops were quite meaty and cooked nicely. They were a bit bland but a bit of salt took care of that problem. We did not get dessert and received the check. After signing the check, I put it on the side of me opposite the end of the table. The waiter came back after 5 mins, reached over me and across the table, and then opened the check and reviewed the tip amount. I told him how rude that was and he closed the bill and walked away. He did wish us a good night when we left but I did not respond as it would have been pretty rude. read more

A nice place we haven't been to for awhile. Excellent food and atmosphere. The wedge salad, redfish with crab and asparagus, chicken Sicilian all delicious. I will say the angel hair side was very small but good. The popovers are such a great alternative to bread with the strawberry butter-delicious! Appetizer of crispy cauliflower very good as well as the wedge salad. Skimpy on the tomatoes I don't call a single grape tomato, "with tomatoes" -the blue cheese dressing really good. That and the $11! For a single jack and coke seems expensive. We had dessert crepes of the chocolate crepe and strawberry crepe both delicious. Would have been even better if the crepes were heated instead of cold, but still very good. Over all great meal $113 before tip for 2 with 1 App, 2 salads, 2 entrees, 1 drink, and 2 desserts. He was very courteous and knew everything about the menu. We had A cheese plate appetizer which was weak. My wife had the Redfish which was ok and I had a Trout special which was also OK. We did a quick anniversary dinner here prior to going to see John Mellencamp at the Orpheum. We have never been to Paulette's prior to this visit even having lived in Memphis 11 years! I like the small rooms that make for cozy (and not noisy) dining. We were brought complimentary champagne for our anniversary and the signature popovers. For dinner I chose the wedge salad. It was prepared as I like it without a huge amount of dressing glopped on. The spouse had a chicken dish as well as a wedge salad. It was lovely and I wish I had paid more attention. Had been here once before and loved the food so came back again - WHAT A MISTAKE!!!! After taking our order, the waiter simply DISAPPEARED!!! We saw him in other parts of the restaurant but after arriving and watching others who had come 45 mins AFTER us get their food we stopped another waiter and asked what was going on. He stated he would check then came back and said our food was being prepared. The Owner looked concerned after checking our table so I asked him what happened and he admitted that while we have been there an HOUR now, the waiter failed to hand our food order to the kitchen and they were JUST STARTING our order over an hour after arriving. How can this be - I asked, the owner did apologize and said they have no idea why the waiter would ignore his only table for an hour. Strawberry butter. My obsession!! I wish they sold it by itself...I'd buy a gallon. I have always loved Paulette's, but ever since it moved to Harbor Town, my love has grown. Now the location matches the food - amazing. This is the perfect place for brunch. It is upscale and yet not insanely expensive. Growing up we used to come here for special occasions, but somehow it seems more approachable by the river without losing its wow factor. In fact, I'd say it is more special in its new location. Their happy hour from 4 to 6 on their Rooftop Terrace bar is a great place to watch the sunset. Also, their mimosas are a must if you're having brunch. read more

It's a special place with an upscale feel and a southern charm. It's nestled in a corner of the quaint Harbor town community on Mud Island. It's got a beautiful view of the river as well. We came here for brunch and I had the Bel-Air salad which came with fresh California greens, sun-dried cherries, oranges, walnuts, walnut encrusted goat cheese, and orange-balsamic vinaigrette dressing. I added grilled salmon which made the whole thing wonderful! You HAVE TO get the Kay-Pie for dessert. You will be kicking yourself if you don't. It's a scrumptious blend of coffee ice cream, praline candy pieces, whipped cream with a splash of Kahlua. UNBELIEVABLE!! It's one of the best desserts I've ever eaten in my life. The food was under seasoned and took a while to arrive to the table. Fortunately, the waitress was able to get us all a generous helping of ketchup that we all used to make the food more palatable. Unfortunately, the waitress only stopped by the table every thirty minutes or so. I wish I'd known so I could have rationed my water better. Eventually it felt like I was stuck in purgatory, unable to get service but unable to leave without paying. One saving grace was the spectacular view of the Mississippi River. We had just eloped an hour prior to arriving so it would have been nice to at least hear a congratulations! We ordered champagne and still, no one asked if we were celebrating. In my opinion, this is one of Memphis' best kept secrets in fine dining. I've been twice recently, and both times I was impressed with everything about this place. As soon as you walk in the door, you are greeted with a very warm and friendly welcome and promptly escorted to your table. When you make your reservation, and I would highly suggest making one, ask for a table near the window. There are very nice views of the river and park across the street. The food here is absolutely wonderful. With French and American dishes, it's gourmet at it's best. I had the Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin with Shitake Mushroom Demi Glace, and it was perfect. My date had the Wild Caught Salmon with Orange Chutney and Lemon Potato Puree. And we both started with the Lobster Bisque, and I think it is quite possibly the best I've ever had. I took my wife here for a nice date of fine dining. The restaurant is very nice. The hostess and wait staff were very polite, accommodating, and attentive. We were seated at a window table as requested and watched a nice sunset over the river. We started with the spinach bisque. This was very tasty alongside their signature popovers. Our next endeavor was the cheese plate which included gouda, manchego (our favorite), brie, walnuts, and a tasty apricot jam. My entrée was the fried redfish with crab meat and asparagus. It was good, but not stellar. The wife had crab and spinach crepes with a wonderful wine sauce. The crab crepe was the hit. She definitely won with that one. We had the khalua pie and strawberry crepes for dessert. The crepes were good, but the pie was AMAZING. Highly recommended. We shall return. read more

We stopped here on our drive through Memphis for an early dinner to avoid rush hour. We were the first dinners of this Thursday evening. Mike our waiter was attentive. We had the tomato bisque with a hint of balsamic vinegar, the popovers and the strawberry butter were delicious. We both had seafood, my wife had the shrimp and grits and I had the special of the evening, red snapper with crawfish served over risotto with broccolini. Both dishes were excellent and the half bottle of Miraval Rose was a great compliment to our meal. We decided on Paulette's for our Christmas Day meal. This year they were serving guests from a set menu between the hours of 11 and 3. Dinner was on the expensive side - $60-70 per menu selection - but worth it. Two of us had the lamb, one had the fish (which met her gluten-free requirement), one had the beef, and the one received a specially-made vegetarian pasta dish. Everyone thought their selection was excellent. Service was top notch as always. Paulette's is a classy restaurant that I think has upped its game in recent years. A few years ago I thought the place had lost some of its luster. The old location on Madison was tired and the atmosphere there had become too casual for my liking. This location is a vast improvement. It's more elegant inside and the view of the Mississippi river just outside makes for a terrific setting. The food was always good at Paulette's but has been exceptionally good on each of my visits since the move. Maybe the quality of the food hasn't really changed and just seems better because of the nicer location. That's good enough for me. There are a lot of great restaurants in Memphis. While Paulette's has always been a perennial favorite of mine, their decision a few years back to move to Harbor Town was a wise one that put a fresh shine on the place and helped it continue to stand out from the pack. read more

We were celebrating a future bride at a table of 8 people, reservations we made 2 months in advance. Upon arriving, we were told we were "hard to get a hold of" immediately catching us off guard. Simple mistake of an incorrect phone number, however we were told to wait in the lounge. 30 minutes later we were seated by the bar. We were pleasant and happy to be relaxed in a nice booth with our girls. After putting in our drink orders, the bartender not 10 feet away from us and not discreetly I might add, said "are you FUCKING KIDDING ME with this drinks? Who ordered these?!" When our waiter responded, "those girls right there"...bartender responded "you're fucking kidding me I have to make these?" Needless to say we were horrified and embarrassed and will not be returning. The drink order was an espresso martini....not a champagne tower. read more

We usually get great food and service here but on our last visit things just fell apart. The manager did apologize and we will come back - everyone has a bad day from time to time. I think the main issue was our server was new. The kitchen was out of of the soup I wanted, so they brought me the soup of the day which was scorched and tasted of burnt cheese. I got a salad instead which was fine. They also brought me some complimentary sorbet to get the scorched flavor out of my mouth. Our entrees were good as usual. Our go to celebration dinner spot in Memphis. The nicest restaurant on Mud Island, and an outside the box setting from the rest of the Memphis restaurant scene. Their bread is possibly the best pre meal bread I have ever had at a restaurant. It's worth a trip just for the bread. The menu is simple, yet provides several different options. I had the ribeye and it was excellent; very high quality. My wife had the red fish, which I can say the same for. This is a higher end restaurant. You do not need to wear a coat and tie; but don't dress like you were raised in a barn. Kid friendly; we had a family dinner with my 18 month old and it was great. I highly recommend for special occasions or fancy dinners. read more
