Ugh. Thanksgiving dinner was crap. We had booked a table with the view at the terrace restaurant and at the last minute they canceled us and put us at Paulettes. We were relegated to an uninspired back room which appeared dated. Whatever. We order the thanksgiving special. One Traditional turkey entree and one fish entree. Both entrees were so overpriced and were very small portions for the price. Worse still, my entree was nearly cold! Both entrees had obviously been sitting out and had already dried out on top but the fish was also tiny with almost none of the shrimps on top as described in the menu. The pie desert looked like it was bought at the supermarket-last week. We threw it away The whole meal was like factory hotel food. Totally lame and the bill was $200 with wine. It was an expensive lesson that I don't want to learn again. read more

Went last night for My Dad's Bday Dinner. Reservations were @ 730 and we were seated 20-25 min late. The food didn't come out for an hour. We didn't order anything that would take that long to prepare. Nothing was great. In fact, the food quality and taste have gone so far down that we won't be going back. This is a place we have gone to eat / celebrate since it was on Overton Square. Such a shame. Way overpriced, very slim menu selection, Some portions should not be called a serving. When the Waitress asks you in a 'telling you way that everything is tasty and awesome' , but you answer for yourself, truthfully... and she doesn't care of comprehend.... We visited on a recent Sunday and had a lovely Birthday brunch for my Mom. The food was very good as is typical of Paulette's. I order the Brochette of Chicken pretty much every time I eat here (I love the mushroom sauce and delicate rice) and have never been disappointed. You cannot go wrong with the Crabcakes,either. Most of the Brunch entrees are well under $15. The legendary popovers with strawberry butter are little pillows of yummy-heavenliness. I could easily eat an entire basket by myself but make sure and save room for one of their incredible desserts. The K-Pie, Hot chocolate crepes and creamy tart and luscious Keylime pie are all divine. Our service however lacked a little to be desired. Our Server "was missing in action when we were seated" (yes, we had a reservation) for several minutes. Another server finally brought us water and explained that our server was "toting Coke" from the sister restaurant next door as they were out at the Bar. Did we really need to know that little detail? (obviously short handed on support staff on a busy Sunday). I was a little surprised by this, the staff is usually more professional here. read more

Tried to celebrate our 30th anniversary at Paulette's and it was terrible. Asked for a special table and was seated next to a 6 year old throwing French Fries. Asked for new table and was seated by couple in T-shirts and shorts. Waiter was inattentive, then argumentative, then rude. Filet Paulette's, the house specialty, was ordered Medium but served to me Raw. My wife's $42 fish entrée came with no more than 2 oz of fish. No one ever acknowledged our anniversary despite the fact that I communicated it with the reservation and reminded them when we walked in. Menu was limited, terribly executed and the wine list was a joke. You want a nice, romantic dinner with outstanding food and service? Go to Flight. read more

I live here in Harbortown...new to the area...Everyone raves...hmmm, service was good, place seems dated...not in an elegant, ambiance way...food was good...I chose the beef tips, they were tender, warm whipped pitatoea, good gravy, the thin red peppers ( thought they were carrots at first ) still not 100% sure, ...thinly sliced seemed cold in the middle off a stack .( whipped potatoes, beef tips, pepper slices, light gravy)..side salad very basic, chocolate flourless cake was good...should have had it with espresso, the popover was light and kind of novel, the strawberry butter- very good, tonight's signature drink- Memphis Old Fashion was truly the star here...two people, one fixed price entre special, one old fashion, and other off the menu items, iceberg wedge, crabcakes and another flowerless choc dessert, two flat tap waters equalled almost 100$.. I had brunch here on Sunday (only served between 11 am - 2 pm). I made reservations ahead of time with open table on yelp to guarantee my party and I a table. Arrived on time, and was promptly seated. The atmosphere of this restaurant is quite fancy, so I wouln't suggest coming in with torn jeans and flip flops, but I am sure they will still serve you regardless. Once seated, our waitress brought us some warm popovers with strawberry butter. This was so simple and delicious, and different from a bread basket; which is perfect for a Sunday brunch. There was a wide variety of options on the menu that would suffice someone who was a sweet brunch-er or savory. What we ordered: Brioche french toast with sausages - this tasted great for someone wanting a more traditional sweet breakfast. The french toast was thick and the maple syrup came on the side. Eat this with the strawberry butter and gahhhhh so good! Also the breakfast sausages were big and delicious - no those small wimpy breakfast sausages. Ham Palacsinta - this is a bit hard to explain, but it looks and tastes like a ham croquette. Very good flavors and not too salty. It comes with a cinnamon apple crepe, as well. Prefect combination for someone who can't decide between savory and sweet. You get both! Shrimp with Avacado Halves (I don't remember the actual name but some what close?) - I have to say, this was probably my favorite. I would ask for sauce on the side next time though, since I felt it was a little too much sauce for me. They use delicious jumbo shrimps on top of avacado halves with a creamy cajun sauce on top. Refreshing and not too heavy. The shrimp is cooked almost like a cocktail shrimp. Service: We got a great waittress to help us. She was attentative and quick, and very friendly. What more can you ask for? Overall, I will definitely be trying this place again, especially since I am within walking distance to it. They, also, have specials on the weekdays. We decided to try this place out and were pleasantly surprised! My husband, who was disappointed w Folks Folly filet migion, gave Paulette's filet a 10! I loved the 3 course dinner option for $29.99- loved the salmon and the butternut bisque, and the chocolate dessert was amazing. Portions are not huge but definitely were filling for us. The atmosphere was peaceful with live piano playing and the staff did a great job keeping according to covid 19 guidelines. There was no wait on a Saturday night which was a plus for us. This is a very nice place. It is on Mud Island and is a great place for a date night or upscale dining experience. However, the food is expense and subpar. A hamburger and fries is $19. My husband and I happened to go during downtown dining week when they offer 3 courses for $20, which is a good deal. The food was not seasoned well. We will not go back and do not recommend this place. There are many other upscale date night restaurants in Memphis that offer better tasting food. read more

My first time was New Year's Eve... the wait for our table was quite long and also realized they had a 4 course special menu for New Year's Eve. We did not realize they were not offering there regular menu. My family and I are gluten free and vegetarian. Most courses did not offer choices for us. After I apologized to our waiter for not realizing the specialized menu, the manager came to the table and listened to our restrictions and relayed to the chef. I had a perfect dinner here. Decided to try it out during downtown dining week. For starters, they have a great wine menu. Several affordable bottles in each varietal but you can go big if you're in the mood and really enjoy some good wine. The food was all fantastic. The portions were all exactly right. Not too much and not too little. The salad was great. The pork tenderloin was tender and perfectly paired with the finish and the side. The desert blondie was great. The ambiance of the restaurant is great. It can be romantic or just very quiet and laid back. Service was perfect. Silent when needed but attentive and knowledgeable when necessary. One of the worst dining experiences of my entire life. Had a reservation for 11:15. Did not get out of this restaurant until 2pm. Even though they only had a 1 top and a 3 top, it took them 45 minutes just to give us some water which they only refilled later because we had to ask. We didn't get our order taken for over an hour. Then it took an hour to get our food. And when my $20 steak, eggs and asparagus dish finally came out i couldn't help but crack up laughing. There were 4 small bite size pieces of steak (we estimated 3oz TOPS plus it was all completely cold), 2 stalks of asparagus and 2 of the most bland and borderline disgusting eggs I've ever been served. I've had better food at Waffle House. I wish i had taken a picture of what we were served, but we were all too hungry. They brought out some of our party's food and twenty minutes later brought the rest. We paid a lot of money to come here and we all left hungry, completely disappointed and with most of our day gone, having to cancel plans. The service and quality of food is inexcusable for any establishment but especially one of this stature and price point. read more

This is the worst dining experienced in my 68 years. The service was the worst. We were seated and totally ignored for about 30 mins, I kept asking the hostess where was our server she kept saying he is coming. The person working the area walked by us 10 times never made eye contact. It was 1 other table he was waiting on. after talking to the hostess the second, I ask for management, she finally came and was very rude telling us our server now a lady was on her way. Everyone was walking around probably 4 tables with people seated. The servers walking around putting silverware on tables folding napkins, not making eye contact with us. Finally John came around the corner saying he was going to help us he did a fantastic job, We should have left, apparently they did not want to serve black people. I felt I was back in the 60s. Been to Paulette's many times over the years. Have always had a good experience with food and service. Was so disappointed last night I may never go back. We joined our group a 20 minutes late which seemed to upset the waitstaff. It went downhill from there. It took forever to get place settings and menus. Our group was done eating and plates were removed then finally we got our mediocre food. Had to ask for service items like water. Never got bread. We were checked on infrequently. Then finally we asked for the check and without asking the waiter, Lee put all on one check!?!?! Come on. What's worse is when I told who I thought was the manager the young lady just smiled at me in a patronizing manner and didn't apologize, or say much of anything other than "we normally get compliments on our service." There were not that many people there but there was a table of 8 old people next to us that got far better service than we did. Came for dinner last night. The popovers with strawberry butter are a signature item and always excellent. Tried the stuffed mushroom appetizer which was simply OK -- not recommended. I had the redfish with crab meat and it was excellent! Wine selection was excellent, and the dessert, a K pie, which is tall with liquor poured on top was phenomenal. Three of us shared the dessert, which was optimal, as it is enormous. The service was spotty. I had to ask our server 3 times for another glass of wine! Not sure what it they are trying to achieve here. They didn't seem very glad to see us. Dinner at 6pm, place was empty. I told them we'd have five people rather than four and it was a whole big thing. Like a situation they'd never encountered before and had no idea what to do. For an appetizer, they offered us some type of cold, dry, crunchy, powdered sugar ... pastry or something. It didn't taste good, nor did the the pink butter that came with it. But we'd waited so long for some attention that I ate it out of boredom. The menu was pretty uninspired. You could maybe call it "Contemporary Southern meets French" but everything is really just a slab of meat or fish in some type of sauce. I had shrimp and grits. It tasted wonderful but was swimming in so much sauce/juice that it was too soupy to eat with a fork. Considering this is supposed to be high-end, the service really isn't good. I've never been treated so poorly by a restaurant staff. We had a 2 p.m. reservation for Easter brunch. The hostess was rude and brash. She silently motioned for my party to follow her to our table, and when we hesitated out of confusion, she turned around, rolled her eyes, and scoffed at us. Our waiter didn't greet us or tell us anything about the menu. He simply said: "Everything's good - what do you want?" Food was fine but not at all worth the price. I used to love Paulette's as the food has always been delicious and they provided great service. Yet, when dining there one afternoon recently our service was sub par. To begin the server loudly made a comment of how we must have been hungry to eat a popover so quick (it's literally bread and yes we came to eat because we are hungry) but I found that rather embarrassing. Our server dismissed my husband's requests on how he wanted his food (with all his burger toppings on the side which shouldn't be a difficult task.) My filet was good so no complaints there. The most interesting part of it all was my mojito, which had absolutely no ice and at least 25 mint leaves. I felt like I was literally drinking a mint plant. These servers need etiquette training and maybe some help on mixing basic cocktails. We will not be back anytime soon to overpay for poor service. read more

It's a great place for dinner, but make a reservation far in advance. You'll want to be on the rooftop to enjoy river views, and the best time for that is right a sunset. You won't regret it. Unless you go in the summer. Then you're dealing with the heat and mosquitos of mud island Memphis. So stick with early spring and fall. The food here was great. Tonight my husband and I celebrated our 61st anniversary and couldn't have picked a more wonderful spot. We may have been the oldest people there (all were at LOT younger), but we couldn't have enjoyed it more. Our waitress was a doll and watched over everything ( but never hovered). The ambiance was so very relaxed and French country. The famous popovers and strawberry butter were served warm and crispy, our entrees were perfect on every way and then we topped it off with their decadent Kahlua Ice Cream pie (big enough to serve 2 to 4). All of the staff was exceptionally friendly and Chef Chris even came out so they we could thank him. Such a talent he has!! The food was fantastic. We particularly enjoyed the popovers with strawberry butter that were complimentary. Oh Paulette's, how you have disappointed me! I think we're done with this place.i I really used to enjoy brunch here but after our last disaster of a meal here I won't be back. I saw the 3 course Easter brunch on FB and recommended it as the spot for our family brunch. I feel awful for doing so. To start, our table of 5 was seated in the very back corner of the restaurant, which wouldn't be a big deal but my wheelchair bound grandmother was with us. Not only are the spaces between tables not wide enough for a wheelchair but the host seating us walked off without helping clear a path. People from the front to our table basically had to get up mid meal and move their chairs. It was awkward for everyone. And to be clear, we stated in the reservation made a few weeks in advance that there was a wheelchair in our party. Once we made it through the obstacle course we were seated and had some of the most awkward service I've ever had. Our server never took drink orders and went right into food, each of us had to take a popover from the basket rather than it being put on the table, food was brought out and then the server rushed away, and we had to ask for drink refills after our sever came to the table multiple times while we had empty drinks and never acknowledged that. Ordinarily I wouldn't complain on yelp about anyone of these things but together they made for a awkward experience. When our desserts came my grandmother found a hair inside her crepe! It was long and dark and she has short grey hair - my sister and I do have longer hair but we were at the opposite end of the table, plus it was inside, not like it feel ontop. When this was pointed out to our server he apologized but got rather defensive. No manager came over nor was any reflection of this disgusting error made on our check. A new dessert was offered but my grandmother was disgusted at that point. Look, mistakes happen but I've never seen a restaurant not care like this. When it was time to leave it was another hassle and again no one on staff offered any assistance. This is rude to us and the other diners. The food it self was meh, lukewarm and bland. I had the lamb and was not able to have it prepared to my liking but was told it would be served medium - wtf? It was edible and we did eat, mostly out of hunger not enjoyment. I get that standards go down on busy holidays but the overall experience was unacceptable. My bf even sought out a manager to make then aware and again it was more half hearted apologies but nothing to make it right. We're not scammers looking for a free meal and my dad paid the bill without complaint, he even left a regular tip which I though was kind considering service sucked, and usually I'm a generous tipper! It's the principle of the restaurant saying sorry but not really being sorry. When the location awkwardness was mentioned it was basically "well, we have other reservations" really? It's not like we called last minute begging for a table - if they couldn't accommodate us then they should have said so. Basically, I feel like we were treated as things were our fault. Visiting Memphis for the Thanksgiving Holiday and searched open restaurants. Took a chance on Paulette's price fixe menu. View of the Mississippi was amazing. Unfortunately that was the highlight of our outing at Paulette's. We were disappointed in service as well as quality and value of food. Redfish was tasty and topping was heavy on mushrooms and light on crab meat. Filet was dry and lacked juicy savory flavor. Traditional turkey and dressing was equal to lubys. I tried Paulette's for downtown dining week, and was very much made to feel like I was eating for a discount. Our server got our drink orders wrong and absolutely rushed us through the meal. The tablecloth had spots on it. Entrees were dropped on the table half-way through our starters, so they were cold by the time we started eating them. Fish was a tiny portion and rubbery, clearly previously frozen. The salad and soup and popovers were all good. Dessert was fine, but not great. We were brought the check early, without being asked if we were ready for it or would like another glass of wine or cup of coffee. Auto-gratuity of 20% for downtown dining week, which I completely understand, but since the service was so inhospitable, left an additional bad taste in my mouth. Two different people came by to check on us, so I want to acknowledge that there was a show of hospitality on the part of management. The hostess was also very pleasant. But in the end we felt too awkward to complain basically right in front of the server who was nearby. I love eating out, and am not afraid to splurge on a great dining experience. I tend to think of downtown dining week as a great way to try out new restaurants and decide if you want to add them to the regular rotation. If I got treated this way on a $100 dinner for two (including drinks and tip), there's no way I'd risk coming back for a bill 2-3 times as much. A restaurant should not participate in downtown dining week if they plan to treat patrons like they're an annoyance to be suffered through and moved out as quickly as possible. Sorry, Paulette's. I recently visited Memphis and got to try this place out, it's one of my mother's favorite places. I'm really, really not one for fine dining, but I can spiff myself up on occasion. The restaurant is in a beautiful location right by the river, we were seated at a table near the windows and the view was excellent. Since I was on vacation and my mom is retired, we went early afternoon on a weekday and the place was quiet and peaceful, with only a few tables in different areas. The food was superb. They started us out with some terrific yeast rolls that were soft, fluffy and tasty with a little butter. I ordered the shrimp stuffed avocado halves. It sounds very simple, but was delicious: large shrimp in a remoulade sauce over some perfectly ripe avocado. It was great, but very filling. My mother had the crab cakes, which were divine, the best we've ever had. For dessert, I went light and had the lime sorbet, which was definitely the best I've had. It tasted like it was made either in house or locally and had little pieces of candied lime in it. My mother always gets the strawberry crepe, which she says is terrific. I don't do dairy, so didn't taste it. The only aspect of our visit that we found a bit odd was the service. The hostess was a bit snooty, we requested a booth but she said we'd get better service at a table and was very insistent. We originally had one waiter who came up with a frown on his face and didn't seem very happy. Then we suddenly had a different waiter. He was excellent overall, very friendly, efficient and fun, but he was a bit on the overkill side, calling me "gentle sir, " which I thought was kind of ridiculous. But better to be over served than under served. I'd love to go back next time I'm in town. read more

First time I've been to Paulette's since moving from Overton Square & I honestly don't even remember the many times because I was so young. This trip was great, though. Service was great. The Bel-Air salad was incredible & the Mia Moscato wine was fabulous. I had the spinach and crab crepes and my boyfriend had the filet with the rosemary demi-glaze. Both were incredible! Highly, highly recommend the filet. The meat was cooked perfectly and the glaze had so much flavor and complimented the meat so well. Also, the popovers with the strawberry butter were so good. The restaurant itself looks very inviting and charming. Tastefully decorated and very comfortable atmosphere. We ate there tonight and I have to say, I won't be back. Our waitress FINALLY approached our table, after we had been seated, that took 8 minutes. (not good in the industry). I never knew her name, nor was she making us welcome. She wasn't unfriendly, she wasn't welcoming - we were just there. We ordered some wine, which took 12 minutes to get to the table - another "no-no" in the industry. The tomato/chili soup came in an extremely tiny ramekin, which while transported to our table, overflowed and was extremely messy - NO ATTENTION to detail -- Soup was o.k. Popovers too sweet, but ok. The special we wanted to order which was the Grouper was already SOLD out at 6:30 pm. The waitress did not know her menu, nor did she know how to sell the menu. Ginger salmon - DRIED out, overcooked - common' people - for that kind of money, it should have been succulent. My duck was o.k, however the risotto was made with ordinary rice, not Arborio rice, it wasn't cooked right either. It was overcooked and under seasoned. The demi glace was acceptable. Why have an Italian rice dish in a French restaurant?? The steak wasn't cooked correctly and very tiny, the grouper was minuscule and overcooked. Overall the dishes were OK, but nothing memorable was served. Dessert was blah, unimaginative and dated from the 80's . Key Lime pie was made with cheap condensed milk and was just not good. Service was o.k, tables too close together, you can overhear other peoples discussions, bathrooms were impeccable. Overall, would NOT recommend, would not go back. Needs attention to detail and a new chef. This is not an upscale restaurant, yet has upscale prices. I recommend JAlexander - good service, spot on flavor, and same prices than Paulette's and way better. read more

This is my first review so be patient. Rookie mistake, I forgot to take photos of the dinner, oops. We had the smoked mozzerella arancini with lemon basil aioli. Very tasty. As for the dinner, I had their rack of lamb with Israeli cous cous and pureed carrots. Initially I was afraid that the carrots would be a bit wierd but they tasted great and had a smooth, almost sultry texture. The cous cous was one of the best preparations I've had to date. It was very nicely seasoned and had what i'm sure were pickled onions and peppers in the mix that gave the dish a bit of sweet and a bit of bite that pared beautifully. My girlfriend had the Redfish with Shrimp which was very good as well and prepared well as she is pretty particular about overwhelming fishy taste in a fish dish (go figure). I tasted it and the shrimp both were very good. She also had creme brulee which she adores and this was very tasty as well. However, the star of the whole dinner was the Rack of Lamb. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare (the only way to eat lamb in my opinion) and perfectly seasoned. I can easily say this was the best I have ever eaten. As an end note, I had read some reviews complaining about service but we had a wonderful experience. Not sure if they like you to post names so I'll defer this time but our waiter took very good care of us, was not hovering or present too often but never let us go without when we wanted anything. My husband and I moved to Memphis 6 months ago and we love to try out what Memphis has to offer in the fine dining category. We booked our reservation for dinner through Open Table and listed a comment to request a window seat. When we arrived they seated us across from the window with a perfect view of the empty window table they could have utilized to meet our request. I have had other restaurants fully utilize the open table reservation system to leave me completely awed, but this restaurant just didn't do it. Next I had the cheddar soup and my husband had the Caesar salad. Both were good, but nothing extraordinary. For dinner we ordered the fillet Mignon and the short ribs. Again, these were both cooked well, not over cooked and the rare steak was prepared exactly rare, but the taste just wasn't there. Everything seemed very plain and butter seemed to be the main flavoring. The best part about our experience here was the wine. The service was excellent and the staff was attentive, but overall we won't see the need to be going back here because nothing we tasted left us yearning for more. I took my parents here for Sunday brunch--and quickly realized it's the perfect place for such an occasion. The ambiance is "charming/upscale/romantic/French bistro." The view of the river can't be beat and the setting in Mud Island makes it even more charming--you feel like you're not even in Memphis. The service was friendly, even though the food was late to come out. The beef bourguignon was absolutely delicious--i just wished it came with more gravy. I also tasted the eggs benedict with country ham and the eggs were cooked perfectly. My favorite dish by far was the Chicken Crepe--the white wine sauce was absolutely delicious. My dad had the Chicken Skewers--and said they were okay but nothing to write home about. read more

Currents is an upscale restaurant in Harbor Town that occupies the first floor of the boutique hotel, the River Inn. It faces its sister restaurant, the more relaxed Tugs, which is also a part of the hotel. I've managed to hit Currents multiple times for breakfast and brunch, and have found the service and food to be impeccable. Though the restaurant is certainly high-falutin' (real silver! Fine china! Pre-shaken sugar packets!), we once calculated that it cost only five dollars more than breakfast at CK's Coffee Shop. We've eaten there dressed up; we've eaten there in our jeans. The place is invariably and inexplicably empty on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The food is wonderful: the bacon comes from a community farm a few miles away, the selection of breads truly is fresh-baked, truffle oil is used with a generous hand- I could go on and on. Breakfast will run you about ten dollars per person, and no more than twenty at its most extravagant. Memphis' best-kept brunch secret, though not for long. I got the Sicilian Chicken with Lobster Bisque. Let's start with the food. The bread with confection sugar and strawberry butter wasn't my jam. I mean, it was good, but some of these reviews rave about it. It was fairly bland from my perspective. My family agreed with me for the most part. The Lobster Bisque was nine kinds of good. I truly enjoyed this and I am not a huge lobster guy. This might have been the best part of the meal to be honest. The Sicilian Chicken was great as well. It was a breaded, hammered style chicken. It was full of flavor and very enjoyable. The veggies that come with it taste completely like peppers. You can't taste the carrot or zucchini...just peppers. Let's move to what my family had. Two of them had the Paullete's Filet. First off, this is more like steak medallions. Filet must be a loose term. Secondly, please tell me this doesn't taste just like a Sonic cheeseburger. I mean, at the low low price of $29, I would rather get the Sonic burger. The other two got some sort of crab crepe and they hated it so I didn't even try it. For dessert, we got the popular coffee ice cream. The proper name escapes me. This was fabulous. Really flavorful and yummy. The chocolate brownie was great. The ice cream chocolate crepe thing didn't blow me away by any means. All in all, I loved what I ordered, but not so much what everyone else ordered. On a small side note, the service was mediocre at best. Simply, it was not what I would expect from a place that charges what they do.
