Let me preface this by saying the service is 10/10. The staff is all friendly, sociable, and professional. Many of the employees remember my usual order, something that has never happened to me. Overall, the staff are amazing. Unfortunately, that is overshadowed by the food. Many months ago I made a review about their chicken, which was rancid, and mushy. It actually tasted rotten. But they apologized and asked me to give them another go. I absolutely love their Honey Seared-Chicken with white rice when its done right so I gave it another go and figured that COVID had affected their supply quality for the worse. It was better, though there was still like a 25% chance you got fatty and gross chicken. But I dealt with it because again, I freaking love their food when they get it right. Tonight, I went in for the Honey Seared again, and it was fatty and mushy. I sent it back and asked them to redo it, they did so and it came back in the same state. I ate only the rice and threw the rest of the chicken away after they told me they switched the chicken to dark meat. This does not excuse the chicken itself. Dark meat is more tender than white meat, but it's also one of my favorite parts to eat. Even still, the chicken was fatty and actual mush. It felt like I was eating something already chewed. So clearly, overall, the quality has just dropped and unless they get their meat back in shape I'm just done. I can't deal with crappy meat anymore. I used to love this place so much and I still greatly respect the staff for the job they do, but unfortunately, friendly employees can only enhance the dining experience, they cannot save it. read more

Moved to the area and was craving Chinese food. Got take out and was quite disappointed about pretty much every aspect of the food. I have never seen my bf unable to finish a plate of Chinese food. I've only been to Pei Wei a few times over the years, and always because a coworker dragged me here. It had been several years since my last visit and upon reading the menu this time, I thought "hmmm, these descriptions actually sounds pretty good!" I see the busy stove with authentic black bottomed woks and I hear the whoosh of gas creating foot high furious flames and I hear the sounds of utensils clanging against the woks mixing meats and veggies. It all looks and sounds promising until, well, your plate is set in front of you. My regular sized order of Thai Dynamite chicken (sriracha chile soy sauce, fresh lime, scallions, red bell peppers, carrots and Thai basil) with lettuce cups ran just under $10. The portion size was barely adequate (I'd hate to see what the Small portion looks like) and the food was lukewarm at best after a 10 minute drive back to the office. I couldn't detect any spiciness in this dish whatsoever so it's pretty laughable to call it "Dynamite" chicken. My coworker kept on reminding me "don't complain because it's free!" ("thanks" to her gift card). My coworker has pretty low standards and even she said she wouldn't go back if not for the fact that she still has credit left on the gift card (she's probably cursing whoever gave her this "gift"). Now I wouldn't say the food and flavors were unpleasant. It's acceptable if the expectation is non-authentic Asian food that all kind of tastes the same. Please just don't ever say "OMG, I luuuuuv Asian food! Let's go to Pei Wei!" Based on the busy lunch hour, Pei Wei has a faithful following of customers that enjoy this bland, Asian inspired food. Quick service, tasty food, clean dining area and patio. Loud top 40 tunes, easy parking. Good for groups of 8-10. Lunch with drinks was about $12 per person. We dined on chicken fried rice, vegetable spring roll with sweet chili sauce and Japanese Chili Ramen. All good! The real reason I enjoyed this restaurant was that they are gluten and vegetarian conscious and since most items are dairy free (sans the cream cheese won ton), and my diet being as dairy free as I can possibly make it, I had a wide variety of items to choose from. Just went in this evening for a take out order. I've had Pei Wei a few times in the past, but it has been a long time since...and I'm glad it was just as I remembered. As far as Chinese fast food goes, I would say Panda Express is Old Navy, and Pei Wei is the Gap. You could say P.F. Changs is Banana Republic, but I've never been a fan of them, although I am of Banana. But I digress. The real reason I write this review is to thank Fernando for being so friendly and helpful to me at take-out. He was also helping the dine-in guests. This place is a lot a lot better than your typical Panda Express. The food is a lot higher quality and portion is a lot bigger. Price is a lot more of course. Like few of the previous review stated this is a nice Americanized Chinese restaurant, but I still prefer the more "Asian" type of restaurant that are locally own. But don't get me wrong. I like Pei Wei. I like how you get these giant plates/bowls for cheap. I also like how it is semi-healthy (690 calories for a bowl?!?). My favs include the Sweet & Sour Chicken Plate, and the Japanese Teriyaki Bowl w/chicken. Tasty stuff. I appreciate the choice of white, brown or fried rice with your entree (choices are good). Yay.... I am a fan. but.............. we came here a few weeks back on a Saturday around 6pm and the line was to the front door! Not exaggerating......... 30+ people in line to eat at Pei Wei? WTF?!? My daughter and I were very excited when we saw Pei Wei. Alas, it was not what we hoped it would be. I try to avoid commenting on the taste of the food because for me, that is very personal. However, I was really disappointed with the taste of the food at Pei Wei. It was so different from what we know our pad thai and curry to be. We are Asians, we grew up and lived in Asia, and traveled to Thailand a lot. The pad thai was so "strong" and the curry was too bland. We hardly touched our food. If you want authentic and better tasting Asian food, there are other options around. The place was nicely decorated and very clean, though. The problem is, some of the food is better cooked at Panda. I ordered a chicken Lo-Mein that was the equivalent of an airplane served meal. Of course all of their meals are rated low in calories. If you don't serve anything to your customers, obviously they wont be fattening up on anything. I think my review of the food here is a little bias since I have had Chinese food from China, Hong Kong to Westminster. I gotta give this place a break. I was hoping the new menu offered the same quality of food. I have been to many Pei Wei locations and have always been satisfied with my meal. Unfortunately, this location is lacking on food quality. I ordered the new tuna rolls, vegetable egg rolls and shrimp fried rice. The tuna rolls tasted like they came from a liquor store. The vegetable egg rolls were soaked in so much oil the bag had a small puddle at the bottom. The shrimp fried rice had no flavor and was very greasy. Ingenious! Pei Wei remind me of PF Chain in a less classy version, yet more up scale in comparison to panda express. Here you ordered and pay first before you sit down. They will bring the food to you once it's is prepared. So everything is fresh. The portion is not huge but perfect for one person. it's prefect for work lunch, quick lunch/dinner with friends. Prices here aren't too bad either ($8-$10 per entree). However, if you're looking for authentic Chinese food, Pei Wei is the wrong place. Sometimes, we get tired of Pick Up Stix for fast food Chinese and we come to Pei Wei. I'll admit it; I like my westernized Chinese food. This time, I had the lettuce wraps. Oddly enough, it came with three lettuce wraps, which is a peculiar quantity, in my opinion. The water chestnut and chicken mixture was served with a side of sauce and on top of crisped rice noodles. My boyfriend always get orange chicken. He likes it a lot, but I've never heard him say he didn't like someone's orange chicken. I'm quite fond of the chicken salad. It's pretty hefty so it's definitely good for a single person's entree or a great appetizer salad. The wonton soup is rather boring and uninspired. It's a pathetic amount of wontons floating in a clear broth and so not worth the price. Pick Up Stix's wonton soup has much more substance, including extra veggies. They also serve brown rice which is nice. I'm not that big of a fan of the noodle dishes because some of the sauce combinations just doesn't work for me. Pei Wei is good. Better than Pick-Up-Stix I think. I could taste the freshness and quality of the meat and veggies in my Mongolian Chicken with brown rice dish. I liked how promptly the dishes came out from the kitchen. In fact there were 2 of us and they came out separately. I prefer this to letting one sit and cool while the other one is finishing up. As a result both dishes were served piping hot. This location has a ton of patio tables. Especially nice if you enjoy the music being played in The District. 3 stars = I'm nor a "hater" or a "fan." I love Pei Wei in general, but this location left me peeved. I came here tonight with my boyfriend and got Thai Dynamite tofu and veggies (he got a Thai noodle dish). Our food was basically cold and the veggies were still somewhat raw. I asked the manager to please fix our food. She yells at the cook and hands our plates back ...yes, actually hands our plates to us. They can't even bring the food to the table ... they have to hand it off across the partition? Both of us agreed our food tastes worse the second time around. My tofu was dried out and our plates smelled like butane. Gross. Nobody even asked if were were satisfied, how we were doing. My go to lunch place whenever I'm back in OC! This particular location is always busy during lunch time, but you can order your food online, select the time you want it ready and then go pick it up (hence avoiding the hour long line to order). The food here is always fresh, hot and you can tell it has just come piping hot out of the wok. The flavors are always so good I never need to add any more salt or soya sauce or even Sriracha! The best thing is if you're looking for a healthier lunch option you can opt for brown rice, a small portion and have your food "slurried" where they will cook it in water instead of oil....amazing! My favorite combos are the Mongolian chicken and the Caramel with tofu and veggies! I admit, I also steal some extra fortune cookies to take home with me, which they keep in a jar in the back. :) Overall, a clean location with plenty of seating and a friendly staff. Lunch time is busy and parking is a hassle so plan accordingly and keep some extra time for getting out of the complex because it's not the easiest. 1.5 stars to be exact. IMHO this is just an American restaurant using a phony Asian name selling western food with just hints of Asian flavor and that's about it, talking about irony. It seems silly but i've never felt so mad the day after I ate at the district branch in Tustin. We were truly disappointed, the food was trying hard to taste like asian but has absolutely and miserably failed at it. The curry lacked the "kick" and so was the pad thai. The beef dish we couldn't get where the inspiration was taken from. I really believe panda express and pick up stix ranks higher in terms of just taste eventhough all of them are products of American transformation. This location has some pretty friendly people. The wait staff is great, they got extra plates and bowls for us in a flash. The food came out really quick. I washed my hands for like 2 minutes, came out and the food was there. Crazy fast. The food was good but the portion was really small. I understand that I did order a size small entree but the honey seared shrimp literally came with 5 shrimp and a bunch of rice. The noodle bowl had a bunch of noodles and it was a size small too. I recommend that you get the Dan Dan noodles. I consider myself a Pad Thai expert, and this Pad Thai was good but no where near great. It was "whatever." We got the hot and sour soup and it was rather thick. I've had hot and sour soup at a different Pei Wei location and it was thick as well, maybe it's just the way this company makes it but they should make it thinner. I like that everything is made to order, and you can have brown or white rice, and a few different types of noodles. But I am bummed that they took the flat rice noodles off the menu. They have a pretty decent pad thai for under $7 that is really more like two portions. This is the kind of restaurant that you pick a sauce or style of stir fry, ie. sweet and sour, kung pao, etc. and then you pick the type of meat of your choice.
