Such an elegant dining experience! I'm glad I finally was able to give this place a try. The interior decor is so lovely and inviting with their cream colored walls, vintage looking dining chairs, and ceiling adorned with chandeliers. What a lovely touch! We had reservations for 5:30 and the place was very quiet when we arrived. No one was there yet but they do open at 5pm and most people are just getting home by then. We were received in a very warm and friendly manner. A waitstaff came over almost immediately with a bread basket, followed by our server who brought over the food and drinks menu. I perused through their wine selection for a bit and she gave us ample amount of time to look through things before coming back. I finally decided on a glass of sauvignon blanc since it was so beautiful and sunny out, it really felt like a day for a crisp, refreshing type of white wine. I enjoyed my glass of sauvignon blanc with our order of their house smoked trout served with some capers, finely chopped shallots, creamy spread and some simple crostini. We ate every single, yummy bite! And because one can never have too much capers, my main dish was a Piccata al limone, sprinkled with capers and served with a fried mashed potato (I think), and some broccolini. Anyway, my entire meal was so delicious. I'm afraid when I return, it'll be round 2 for that dish even though I'm dying to try all the other options as well! I had the tiramisu for dessert and yes, like the other 2 menu items I've tried prior to the tiramisu, it was delicious. Service was quite phenomenal! I'm quite impressed with this place. The food comes close to being as good as the top tier Italian restaurants in the St. Louis area but falls short of that and is clearly at the higher end of those of lesser quality. Peppi Salad was "mushy" and the cut of lamb they serve is tough, rendering it both difficult out to cut and chew, it of decent flavor. The service was excellent; the wait staff was hospitable and timely. The man greeting us at the door was obnoxious, downright rude in fact, as we were escorted to a table in the dining room that was so noisy it was reminiscent of a nursery school recess. We asked for a table elsewhere and he commented that since we were using a gift certificate he looked at us as a one time guest. All though not necessarily our intent, he was right! His rude and unwelcoming attitude and remarks were more than enough to dissuade us from returning. He did finally agree to let us move upstairs, saying it would be a 45 minute wait. As we prepared to forget the place and leave, he miraculously found us a table, and when leading me upstairs to check it out remarked that clearly nothing was going to please me. The only thing that displeased me was him, his poor manners to a customer, and his obnoxious comments. We'd never go back. Not sure who the guy with the big mouth was but if he's an employee he needs to be replaced. If he's the owner, shame on him. read more

We had a very nice dinner at Peppes tonight. Service was good as usual and our meals were well prepared. Bread and butter came out first. I ordered the Caprese salad. It was very good considering tomatoes aren't even in season. For my entree I got the six ounce filet with demi-glace. It was a perfect medium as requested. My wife loved her eighteen ounce ribeye, and our fellow dining companions enjoyed their veal chops. Great meal. read more

Dinner at Peppe's last night, still the same great food as always, The shrimp scampi is the by far the best I have ever had anywhere, bar none. The halibut with the Sicilian bread crumbs, olive oil, and lemon was perfect, maybe a little more of that "low calories" lemon, garlic, butter sauce. The Peppe salad, always the same with hearts of palm (yum), red onion, shaved mozzarella cheese, and greens and the perfect amount of vinegar and oil with a touch of creaminess (mayonnaise??) The cannoli was just right for the finish, still warm outside shell with cool ricotta cream and chocolate morsels inside! Perfecto! Leo, the bartender, as always provides fabulous drinks, perfectly balanced and blended. Yea, always a bit loud for me, but everyone is having fun enjoying the food and drink. This place is truly first rate and in a town like St. Louis with all the great Italian restaurants Pepe Apt 2 is arguably the best! Also they have the best bartender in town with Leo. He is a Master Mixologist and is a very friendly, personable individual. As great as the restaurant is, I enjoy the bar even more. There is a very nice garden area outside and there is nothing better than going there for a fine meal and having after dinner drinks out in the garden on summer evenings. When we inquired he said " You are unhappy, now we don't have a table for you." Save yourself from an over priced meal with bad service and go elsewhere. Fantastic small Italian restaurant tucked away across from a community college. Peppe's is very unassuming from the street looking more like a antique store. With only a dozen or so tables inside, a bar with enough to squeeze ten people and an outdoor patio it was a perfect date spot. The bread was great. The vegetable penne was pretty good but the cannelloni was fantastic. We also decided to share a tiramisu for dessert. It was creamy and just the right size. The atmosphere is white linen, chandeliers and Larry was perfect as a server. We loved the sound of two of the specials but wanted to try the menu items for the first visit. Leaving, we found a few people had moved otiaide for wine on the garden patio with about five more tables. We will definitely be back. On weekends I would call rmfor reservations. Had an amazing dinner with friends at Peppe's. This was my third visit and each have been unique. The downstairs dining room is formal and old-fashioned. The upstairs party room is sleek and bright. This recent visit my party of 6 was seated in a private room upstairs that was classy and modern but very dark. To their credit they offered to raise the lights but we didn't want to fuss. It was pretty hard to read the menu but once the reading material was gone we were fine with the lighting. Wait staff was outstanding. The service was so sophisticated and professional. Just super impressive. We started with fresh from the oven homemade soft rolls that melted in my mouth. We shared meatball and shrimp scampi appetizers. The shrimp were the favorite by far and even a seafood hater tried a bite and said that if all seafood tasted like that he would love seafood. The meatballs had a strong anise/fennel flavor and they weren't a favorite, but we all loved the marinara sauce and polenta fries that came with the plate. For the salads, the table had the di Peppe, Spinaci, and Mista. Everyone liked all of their salads, especially those who ordered the di Peppe. Mine was the mista and I really liked it but I think it was just a little too heavily dressed so I would ask for the dressing on the side next time. The dressing combined with the generous goat cheese made the salad a bit soupy. For entrees we had the pasta of the day, a rigatoni with steak and creamy tomato sauce, a special surf and turf with the shrimp scampi that we had as an appetizer, a chicken special, the famous halibut, and the regular menu tenderloin filet. Everyone loved their meals. I personally had the halibut (I had ordered it before) and it was light and lemony and absolutely perfect. Some at the table commented that it was strange that the same potato (a breaded mashed potato croquette) and side (green beans) were served with all of the entrees. Everyone liked the sides and no one complained at all but we thought that it was strange that the sides were not uniquely paired to the entrees. For dessert we had vanilla panna cotta with raspberry sauce and wanted to lick our plates. The panna cotta was light and refreshing and the sauce was amazing. We will come again. Went here recently for a family birthday celebration. The restaurant is on a corner in Kirkwood, which I believe was a house in its former life. The place feels very comfortable, albeit the noise level made it a bit of a challenge to carry on a conversation. The food was one of the best meals I've had in a while. I had the special that night, Chicken Sorrentino, which was outstanding, as was my wife's halibut. Others at my table raved about the food also, including the appetizers. Service was very attentive and efficient. The only issue I had was when the check was presented, it was written by hand on the kind of check you would expect at a diner, like Waffle House. I couldn't tell what was what because the lighting was very low and any description of the charges was indecipherable. All I saw was an amount, which I had to assume was correct - in fact, it wasn't correct. I had to ask if the drinks we had at the bar prior to the meal were included. They weren't. I suggest the restaurant change the way that checks are presented. It was the only negative on an otherwise great experience. read more

Wow. I can't believe the experience I just had here; and if you can't tell from my one star, I don't mean this in a good way. So, I eat out a lot. A little too much in fact, and love finding deals and coupons to make those times I'm feeling 'fancy-schmancy' a little cheaper. So when I saw a Groupon for Peppe's Apt. 2, I had to grab it. Fast forward to today. Based on the server's recommendation I ordered the 24oz veal. I have never had veal, but my dining partner described it as "yummy and tender." When the veal arrived, we both agreed it tasted anything but. 50% of it was bone, 40% chewy and lacking in flavor. I admit the other 10% was good, but um, not worth $40. We told the server this and the manager came right out. If the manager had heard our complaints, taken it with a grain of salt, and had been gracious about the whole situation, I wouldn't be here writing this review. Instead the manager decided to patronize us about veal, telling us over three times about how a man at the table behind us has been "ordering veal for the last 35 years and loves it." Ummm, okay. Good for him? Anyways, we sent back the veal and ordered ravioli and chicken Marsala instead. They came out quickly and were both very tasty. I'd especially recommended the ravioli, which was served in a delicious tomato cream sauce. When the manager came back we were going to tell him how pleased we are with both entrees...but instead, we were talked down to. Again. He again pointed out the man that has been "enjoying the veal for 35 years" sitting there, enjoying his veal. He also told us to not order entrees we know nothing about, that we should've known the veal would be mostly bone (Even though it said nothing about that in the name or description), and that it wasn't "their fault" we didn't like the veal. Wow. Okay, let's get a couple things straight. I don't care how many other people enjoy the veal, and I don't care whose fault it was that neither of us liked it. Secondly, I'm sorry we're not veal 'experts.' And thirdly, I work in the food industry. When two people out of a busy dining room don't like the meal, you don't give them crap for it. Like geez dude, just move on... In the end, I rate the food a 3/5 after trying the chicken and ravioli. I rate the service -100/5 for being the crappiest and most condescending service I can remember. So yeah, if it wasn't obvious, I won't be back. read more

You guys, I felt like the biggest dummy in St. Louis for not knowing this place existed. A surprise date night led me here, and I am so grateful I got to have the experience! This, my friends, is beautiful, fine Italian dining. I was impressed from the second I walked in the door. This place is SO charming and full of class, but manages to be cozy and relaxing at the same time. Our table was towards the back, and I felt like we were in our own little world. Our server was great and helped us pick a bottle of wine (Pinot Gris), and we enjoyed the meal from beginning to end. Regretfully, I did not get pasta, but I will next time for sure. We started with the meatballs and polenta fries, and they were wonderful. After listening to the specials I had a hard time deciding, but ended up choosing the tilapia, which was topped with a lemon butter sauce and sat alongside green beans and mashed potatoes. It was one of the best meals I've ever had, and that's not an exaggeration. The fish was cooked perfectly. My date had the tenderloin which was also cooked to perfection, and needless to say, we were blissfully happy. Go here for something special or just a really great date night. I saw this place come up in one of my Yelp searches one day and was intrigued. It's a restaurant...with a really odd name? Seriously what is up with the name? Peppe's Apartment....number 2?! Needless to say I was curious. (Sean informs me it used to be a deli.) When I checked out their website a few odd months ago, there wasn't much of anything on there. I think they updated it since but still no menu .... ? I think they should add a menu. But anyway. Fast forward to last night. Sean and I decided it was time to have a "romantic" *sparkles* date together, lol. So we booked a reservation for Peppe's at 7:15pm. This place is small-ish but it's really cute. The gold and white decor remind me more of a French style restaurant than Italian. But whatever, it's gorgeous! I love the chandeliers. It was kind of noisy inside and I had almost wished we'd opted to eat outdoors but it was nice and cool inside. Our waiter was really weird. I mean, he was a nice guy but damn was his sense of humor was confusing. He also carded me for a glass of wine which I thought was kind of tacky, just in the way he asked. I know I look young, but this really annoys me. If it was hard liquor at some trendy bar I'd understand more, but at a sophisticated dining establishment where I am drinking to taste the glory of fermented grapes with my meal and not to get hammered? Meh. The way he asked was really awkward too. And maybe I will stop feeling so weird about this when people start ACTUALLY carding regularly. If it's the "law" then why do 9 out 10 servers and bartenders NOT card me at all? Guess we have a town full of "law breakers"! But then again I think the drinking age should be lowered so whatever. Tangent. All that aside, I ordered the veal. I really like the fact that you can order half portions of entrees. Other restaurants, take note! Sometimes I don't want to stuff my face and sometimes I don't want leftovers too. Some items just aren't that great the next day. Sean ordered a steak. I think it was some type of sirloin. I didn't really like his steak that much. IMHO it wasn't worth the $26. My veal, on the other hand, was AMAZING. It wasn't ungodly tender like I thought it might be, but it was still easy enough to cut with a non-steak-knife. The broccolini was FANTASTIC. Damn. If all veggies tasted this good, I'd be tempted to switch over to being vegetarian. Mmmm. Too bad I suck at cooking vegetables. The fingerling potatoes were only okay. Kind of bland, and I had to add some salt and pepper and drag them around my plate to soak up the white wine and sage sauce from the veal. Sean said that my potatoes are better but I can't tell if he was just trying to be nice to me or something. ;) Only other thing to note is that they didn't have salted butter to go with the bread which really irked me. The bread was pretty tasty and I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more if it came with salted butter. I actually added salt from the shaker to my butter... Oh and the wine was realllly good. Some type of house pinot noir. I should have asked what it was called. All said and done, I'd probably go back to try their pasta because there were two pasta dishes that were homemade. Mmmm. Kind of out of my price range for normal fare though, so it will probably be a while before my next trip. Neighborhood is nice too and makes me want to move to Kirkwood! read more
