If you have not been to Perry's Joint then you are missing out on some really great sandwiches. The first time that I went to Perry's was their Sierra Madre shop. This past Thursday I picked up a catered lunch for our geology department at Caltech. This is the 4th time in a little over a year that we have ordered catered food. They have always had the food ready on the requested time of pick up and their staff has always been exceptional. The catered lunches have been for our faculty and Perry's has always received great praise for the sandwiches we have ordered. The sandwiches have been placed on trays and they have plenty of mustard and mayonnaise packets for people to put on their sandwiches. The favorite sandwich is the pastrami. The taste is exceptionally flavorful and not greasy. I also like their roast beef. These sandwiches ate packed with meat and you definitely get your money's worth. Perry's Joint is a locally owned neighborhood sandwich shop. The theme of the sandwich shop is jazz. After looking through the menu, there didn't seem to be anything unusual about the menu. It's your average sandwich that you definitely can make at home. If you're too lazy to make a sandwich at home, this would be the place to support a local sandwich shop instead of a corporate behemoth like a Subway or Jersey Mike's. The sandwich is piled high and made with care. The sandwiches are around $15 including the tip they ask you for. I normally would never pay that much for a sandwich. If not for the recommendation of my client, I wouldn't try it. The most popular sandwich? The tuna seems to be a favorite since they ran out. I settled for the next best thing -- a warm pastrami sandwich with bacon. It's a solid and tasty sandwich. A sandwich I would not drive out of my way for, but wouldn't mind stopping by if I was in the area again and wanted to support a locally owned black-owned business. I drove from the very far side of South Pasadena this late morning, almost in Alhambra all the way over to the location on Lincoln to get there when they opened. Hotter than you can imagine. Money on gas, time, traffic and everything else you can imagine only to get to the front door and find it locked. A handwritten sign on the front door that one could barely read saying that they're going to open an hour and a half late, with people inside doing whatever it was that they were doing. The fact that it's so hidden it's not wonder it remained a total mystery for so long. Perry's Joint is definitely special. It feels family, community and all around very warm. The building is full of good people that you want to get to know and to hear their stories. We enjoyed sandwiches after our hike and we were floored by the portions. I had to unhinge my jaw to take my first bite! I also had to save half the sandwich to finish later, they were so large. It was our lucky day because the Hey Joe was available on a Saturday. Usually it's limited. Though, the prices on yelp are wrong. These sandwiches hover around $15. The Hey Joe had all the meats that I wanted (Hot roast beef, pastrami), but the hot link took over the flavor. It was better when I enjoyed the link separately. Would also love more sauce to bring it together. The mustard and mayo wasn't sufficient. The sandwich relied on the flavor of the meat, but for me, a special sauce to bring it together would really complete the meal. The nachos they serve are movie theater style nachos, which I love. We ordered the guru, the big band, and a New York dog. 1. I think they make their own sauerkraut! The hotdog had a great snap and an incredible bun. 2. The guru was on sourdough and my goodness it was so tasty. Hot Pastrami and turkey is an amazing combo! 3. The big band on sweet wheat as Perry suggested was the home run. I really wanted to give them 5 stars because their food is amazing!!! But sadly, my order of 5 items was not met correctly when I specified leaving out certain toppings and the person on the phone even repeated it. I arrived to struggle with parking (not allowed to park in the lot right behind or you will be towed. So gotta find street parking! There is a beautiful mural right across from the building. There are lots of outdoor seating and other areas inside to sit and dine. Loved the jazz music playing. There was a long line (which validated even more how good this place is) and lots of hard working employees! The guy who helped me was not the same who took my order so I wonder if that contributed to specifics being left out. I had also requested a Perry's Punch and Jalapeno chips and he would have forgotten that if I didn't speak up (the owner remembered the chips). My friend tipped me off that Thursdays and Fridays they have a tri tip sandwich special *cue drooling* I ordered the Hey Joe and it was amazing. My friend got the egg salad sandwich and I got the hey joe which is a hot sandwich loaded with pastrami, roast beef, and hot link. I love bringing a friend, that way we can split halfsies and try both!! The egg salad sandwich is as classic as it gets, the egg salad itself is incredibly creamy, delicious, and we'll-balanced with all the fresh veggies. The hot Joe came out steaaamming and loaded in all its glory. The hot link is such a perfect addition. I'm drooling as I'm recalling my experience and writing this. Small little mom and pop shop, you will never expect them to produce such great sandwiches from the look at it from the outside. let me tell you though, if you live near this area and have yet to try one of their sandwich you are definitely missing out. I ordered the gurus, and this sandwich is incredible. It has pastrami and turkey, lots of it. You have to make sure to eat this sandwich when you order it, as there are lots of juices in it and will make your bread soggy if you don't. The shop offers a small amount of seating, both indoor and outdoor, but I chose to go with takeout. Their menu has a pretty good variety of sandwiches available. I went for two of their Avante Garde selections (which are their more premium items). Both were great, but they did have some minor drawbacks. The Hey Joe, basically a meat lover's sandwich, was tasty, but slightly on the small side, and the hot links a little overpowering compared to the other flavors. On the other hand, the Tri Tip Sandwich, (extra exclusive since it's only available on Thursdays and Fridays) was definitely my favorite of the two. An insanely well made sandwich, but also held back a bit by its sizing. Overall, the sandwiches held some pretty good flavor profiles, and despite their size, left me satisfied. It took 50 minutes to get my sandwich. 50 minutes! There were only three people ahead of us when we got in line, although there were many people waiting for their orders to be completed. At 35 minutes, they informed me that they were out of my bread, 15 minutes later they completed my order. My friend had to leave without her sandwich as her lunch break was over due to the long wait. I ended up driving her sandwich to her home and dropping it off with her husband and then driving to my home where I was finally able to try the sandwich. The gentleman behind the register, who I'm assuming was the man, the myth, the legend, Perry himself, was extremely kind, entertaining, and helpful in guiding through his eclectic and delicious sandwich menu. What a special little sandwich shop! Got the Tuna Simone on squaw, the tri tip sandwich, and an Oreo cookie shake to go. Everything I ordered was excellent. Love the slightly sweet taste of the squaw, and the tuna was well balanced not overly mayonnaise-y. The tri tip sandwich was an obvious choice because it's only available two days a week. It tasted as though I had went to a BBQ shop! Tender, thin sliced meat, soaked up in a French roll, with some BBQ sauce on the side in case you wanted an extra kick. The Oreo cookie shake didn't survive the 7 minute trip home, so I'm pretty sure that it speaks for itself. The best part about Perry's, despite their great sandwiches, are the people that work there. Perry's staff was the friendliest I've ever met. They are so welcoming to everyone that steps in the door; they made me feel as though I had been a regular for years.
