I REALLY want to give this Petco high marks since they're in my neighborhood and it's a smaller store but everytime I've been in here they find a way to disappoint. Once I was there with my son to buy fish and after about 10 mins we tracked down an employee. I told her what I needed and she responded that her shift was about to end so she'll get someone else. WTF? Worst yet, after a day 4 out of 5 fish died. I returned a couple of times since this visit and there continues to be a pattern of this store being understaffed. What a way to run a business. I rather drive a few extra minutes to another local pet shop. read more

The quality of the fish, in partiular the livebearers (Mollies, Platies, Swordtails) seems to be very poor across the board at 9 out of 10 Petcos I have been to in the San Jose area. They hoover at that top of the tank, fins clamped, shimmy and on many occasions are afflicted with Ick or fin rot. The salesgirl told me that the Algae growth on the tanks that evening just got there because they clean the tanks every morning. I know experienced hobbyists will not buy fish here but I would like to give a heads up to the new hobbyist who may not be aware of all the things to look for or be taken in by getting some bad advice from an inexperienced salesperson. Maybe Petco should hire more experiened salespeople and also look at the quality of livestock coming from your supplier. PetSmart on the other hand is a store of the same type and the difference between the quality of the two stores regarding the aquatifc section is quite noticeable. read more

I took our dog, Argus, there for the first time. I usually go to our vet's office, but I wanted to try and find a quicker alternative. Talk about quick. They took Argus right away, made him feel comfortable, explained the grooming options to me and had him back to me in about three hours. The people were great. I am very sad about what just happened. My mom and I just went to get a goldfish for my moms kindergarden class aquarium and the sells lady (Danielle) wouldn't sell my mom a goldfish because she didn't believe we had the proper equipment. My family had 3 dogs, a cat, a bird, many fish in an awesome aquarium, and 3 hens and apparently we can't take care of a goldfish. Way to ruin a kindergarden class' day. read more

The store itself was clean and organized, very friendly pets. However when I was trying to buy a habitat for my animals the employee was very rude and told me that it was two small even though it was one of the largest habitats they had, she then continued to tell me how the food I chose wasn't good enough. Every time I tried to buy something it wasn't good enough, it confuses me that she would be so rude while I try and buy things that they sell. Won't be going there again. read more

The checkers are friendly, however, the management of this store leaves much to be desired. I have been a Petco customer for well over a decade and purchase primarily dog food from them. For the past several months I have complained to them that the brand of raw dog food I purchase is only available at their store in the smallest size or the largest size. I can't buy the largest size because it would spoil before I could feed it to my dog (a terrier mix) and the smallest size, a 1 lb roll, is much more expensive per ounce than the 2 lb roll. I have complained about this to Petco for months as this seems to be an ordering issue--their records reflect that they have the 2 lb roll in stock but they do not. This is very frustrating so today I asked to speak to a manager about the issue. The clerk in front called him twice but he never responded. Turns out he was a few aisles away on the phone with another store. He could have walked to the front of the store to indicate that he would be a few minutes but instead ignored the PA requests for a manager. After waiting 5 minutes I just walked up near him waiting for him to get off the phone. He asked if I needed help and I said "Yes" that it would probably take a couple of minutes. He said he was on the phone with another store and walked away and continued his conversation with the other store. After waiting another 5 minutes, I left frustrated and vowing never to come back. I then called Petco customer service which is in the Philippines. I had a hard time understanding the representative who kept repeating herself over and over again. I asked for the contact information for the regional manager of Petco. She said she did not have that information and could not pass me on to a supervisor. So apparently Petco does not care about customer service so after 10 years of being a loyal customer, I am now going elsewhere. It is just appalling how they treat their customers. read more

Took my sister's golden retriever in for a cut & groom. When we got him back, we saw that his cut was completely uneven. His hair was still long (they did not cut it short enough) and there were bald spots. It looks like they had a problem with shaving or something. Then they called back, saying that they had accidentally charged the price of a smaller dog for him and wanted us to come back to pay the difference. Not only is that mistake (which is entirely their fault) taken unprofessionally, but they also did an unprofessional job. Never coming back to this location. read more

This morning I had the best experience with Ashley as my puppy penny's groomer. She answered all my questions since it was her first time. Ashley was so sweet with her and I had no doubt in my mind she was in great hands since I had absolutely no idea what I wanted! Penny came back happy as can be and looking so cute! I went to My Petco to get My Family Member some Food and Treats. Upon exiting My vehicle I found a wallet at My Feet. I picked it up and continued inside, hoping The Owner was also inside. I asked The First Associate I saw for some Help and She quickly Responded, "I'm on My Break." I've worked Retail before. At My Present Job I deal with Customers on a Regular Basis. I WAS Taught that The Customer COMES First. Up to and including your Break or Lunch. Is this the way Petco Trains their Employees? The Military in Me ALMOST came out but I held back. Let me start by saying this review is for the grooming service. Please anyone who reads this never take your dog here. Take them to a real professional instead. My two shelties were recently brought here for a grooming and a small trim to their fur. Now if you know what a sheltie looks like you know they have a beautiful long overcoat as well as an undercoat. Well the groomers here took a short trim to mean shave all their hair off...clearly these people have no idea what they are doing. Anyone who works with dogs should know you dont do that to a sheltie in particular. The woman who did this to my dogs has literally scarred them for life. Their coat may never grow out the same, they cannot be outside in direct sunlight until some of their overcoat grows back, and to make it worse she shaved my dogs right before my wedding so even the pictures we take with them will be scarred by this womans incompetence. To top it all off it took them 6 hours to do this and they wont let anyone in with the dogs either! The best part is this "professional" attempted to blame a misunderstanding with my mother who dropped them off as the reason she thought it would be a good idea to shave a sheltie. This lady is not a professional dog groomer and should seriously consider a new line of work (definitely not a hairdresser either!). Everytime I look at my dogs I get so upset and sad for them because of this woman. So please anyone reading this, avoid petco grooming until they hire actual competent people, there is no excuse for shaving a sheltie, period. read more

I went to get a few hermit crabs for my son. The man who helped us was very nice but not too helpful on explaining how the hermit crabs to be cared for. just recently the bigger crab passed. I went back to the store to get some more help and there were two girls who helped me very much. They really explained a lot and now my son's hermit crabs are very happy and i am really excited to see my son really responsible for his pets. I wish i had gotten the names of the girls down but i didnt see their name tags. Thank you girls!! thank you so much, you made my son very very happy with his little pets!! read more

I want to preface this review by saying the staff here is very friendly. My problem lies with the management of the live animals they're selling here. I went to buy feeders for my fish and was appalled by the conditions of their tank. The fish were tremendously overcrowded with dozens of dead fish on the surface and at the bottom. HORRIBLE customer service. I called to speak with the manager - not to complain, just to ask a question. I was asked to leave a message for him because he was on a conference call. After 3 hours, with no return call, I called him back. He was extremely rude, impatient and sarcastic. It makes me wonder - with a manager like that - how are the employees?? So I checked the different sites for Kennel Decking and PetCo guaranteed delivery by the end of that week. As we were trying to beat a huge expected storm I ordered 10 decks from them and at a very good price with a very courteous and helpful salesperson. Items arrived in a timely fashion and we went to work! Second box was missing the entire bag of feet for the decking. I called 2 days in a row and asked PetCo to please expedite the missing necessary parts.They assured me they would. I still heard nothing from them so the 3rd day I called the Kennel Deck company itself and they immediately sent me a confirmation and tracking # for the missing parts. (Not expedited :( but at least on it's way) FIVE days later I get a email from PetCo that they have received my calls on missing parts and will be sending the request for replacements to whoever, so if I had waited on PetCo I would be into the following year before installing our product! This is an awkward Petco to come to. Employees seem to hate life so much that they make Walmart's employees seem like the happiest people on earth. There is one 'meh' employee who can easily get on your nerves for being a wannabe 'know it all' he's just some long haired guy, you can easily tell who he is. While he responds fast to take you to where the item is you're looking for he can go on with information we already know that we don't need to know we are not 'noobs' in caring for dogs. Maybe he's used to dealing with idiot dog owners 'hurr durrr' anyways I can see him being somewhat helpful to first time dog owners but I still recommend to not trust employees and just simply call your vet for the best results (they shouldn't charge you). We just can't handle the sadness and annoying attitudes here, service matters (includes attitudes). read more

This review is specifically for the grooming service. They charged us $50 each for our two papillons, plus extra for one of the boys as he was difficult to groom. I'll give them the "difficult to groom" as he is kind of a pain. However, each dog weighs between 6 and 8 pounds, and we were charged the "medium" dog rate which I took issue with. The grooming itself was satisfactory, but it felt like a ripoff in the end. read more

THEY DON'T DESERVE ONE STAR, ONLY SELECTED BECAUSE I HAD NO CHOICE!!!!!! If you love your dog, do not take it here for grooming. This was our first time coming here for grooming, but come here regularly for purchasing food. We had an appointment at 12:45pm and were told that it would be 3-4 hours and provided our cel phone number in case of emergency. We received a call at 2:56pm telling us that our dog was kennel aggressive and they could not get her out of the kennel and that we needed to come and get her. When we got there we spoke with Jayke and Christian and they stated that they did not perform any services as they could not get her out of the kennel. I had to go back to the kennel and get my dog because she was too scared to come out. As frustrated as we are we left without incident. Once we got home and our dog was in a safe environment she ran immediately to get water as there was no water bowl in the kennel. I saw first hand the bowl was outside of the kennel. We called the store to discuss this matter with the manager and asked how long was she in the kennel before they tried to groom her. They stated that after 20 minutes they attempted to groom her, but could not get her out of the kennel. So, they are saying that they left her in a kennel with no water and no phone call to us for an additional hour and a half. This is unacceptable and we will NEVER go back and are filing a formal complaint with their corporate office. read more

To start, the pictures listed on this are not the same store. This store is old and looks completely different than what's posted. Weird. There isn't enough staff at this location. I can never find anyone to help when I look and those who I do find never have an answer. I go mainly for the aquatics because they're close to my house and I have a beta fish. The last few times I've come here I've left with what they told me would work for my aquarium even after being skeptical and I always. Always have to come back to return their suggestions because they're wrong. Honestly petco as a company is a scam with their knowledge and prices. (5 gallon bucket is $10 but you can get a better/higher quality 10 gallon w/ lid at home depot for $5) i have to return what I purchased today because it was not only the wrong size than what was listed on the box, but it's a completely different material than what was listed on the box. I give them 2 stars for convenience but other than that I think I'll be moving on to just online shopping for my pet needs. I have 12 years old terrier dog. I have been always taking her to petco. I recently move to meridian and closest petco was this place. I called them and made appointment.i took my dog half hour earlier than her appointment to petco. The girl helped me couldn't find appointment ,then couldn't find vaccination date. She was keep asking many unnessery questions. Finally I lost my pation and I said I'm late for my work can they take care of her ? Ok She need complete service , hair cut ,shampoo and nail.... Cost me $55.00..... I paid and left my dog.....5 min later they called me .they forgot to charge for felee shampoo...additional $13.00....... No problem My husband picked my dog that evening.... When I came home he was so unhappy....nail was not done because my dog didnot liked it..I never had this problem with her... My husband gave her bath because she was full of hair.............they charge me extra for special shampoo.....why she should have her hair cut all over her body if they gave her bath???????and they didnot give us any good service.........I highly recommend you stay a way from this store...... Very bad hair cut/grooming by Sarah, who is not very friendly with customers. Uneven, and the sanitary area not done. This place is a dog paradise! I took my dog here to buy him food and he loved it; I mean there are not many places around town that you can take your dog to that they really enjoy being there. He got a bunch of different food for himself ( I tend to kind of let him do his shopping) and we came out with his usual dog food and a bunch of goodies for him. For anyone that has little dogs the "beggin strips" bacon and cheese flavor is a big must have. You can use it for dinner, treats, or training treats. Horrible experience. There definition of grooming is shaving your dogs bald. Oh, and when you bring in your breed they think an Australian Shepherd is a Springer Spaniel. And what is worse is that they don't listen to you but speak over you when you try to explain what it is you would like them to do with you animal. They have a weekly adoption fair for cats/kittens on Saturday's. Friendly staff and large selection. Dog washing station. Dog training, low cost vaccinations, etc. Great place for the animal lover in all of us. read more

Never ever buy fish from this company: the tanks are usually over stocked and under filtered. The conditions often mean the fish are diseased or stressed. The goldfish and koi frequently have hook worm and ich. The reptiles tend to be over priced, and sketchy.. Crickets are not any good. They do not last; nor are they gut loaded. The crickets mealworms and waxworms at Exotic Pets on Union are much better.. read more

So I went to petco last year and it was the worst shopping experience ever about half of their fish were dead even the ones for individual sale. No one talked to me and the employees were hard to find. So I went back tonight and while it's gotten slightly better the customer service is awful. I was spoken to twice in the hour that I was there. The first time was about 40 minutes into my visit when an employee needed the ladder that was in front of the small animals that I was looking at he said excuse me ma'am an walked away. The last time I was acknoweleged was when I went to the register and all the cashier did was say hi as if it was required and told me my total and I felt like I wasn't welcome and like they didn't care. I may be 18 but I know how I should be treated when I'm a customer at a location! I never want to shop there again. They're only redeeming quality is that they carry some good quality foods, like natural balance, but most of they're foods are crap. read more
