Wow!! This is a really really good pho place! My boyfriend and I were leaving California and we heard so much about this place we decided to see what it's all about. They have sooooo sooo many varieties but I found what I wanted, bun rieu oc, no rieu. They delivered it... with no oc! Lol but it's okay because they gave me a separate bowl full of oc! Writing this review is making me miss bun oc and the veggies that go with it so much! Always gotta add that smelly mam ruoc or "shrimp paste" for that authentic smell. Pho is literally a dime a dozen in Little Saigon, however Pho 79 seems to exceed expectations. First things first, there is a line to get into this restaurant. The place itself is small, however its really about the same size as any regular pho establishment you have probably been to. In order to get people in and out in an orderly fashion, there is a list you place your name on and you just have to wait until its your turn to go in. After about a 25 minute wait, we were able to get in and were promptly seated. I order a regular size bowl (which was quite big) with thin slices of steak, brisket, beef tendon, and tripe along with a bowl of ox tail. The bowl was only about $7 and the ox tail was only an astounding $2. The star of the show was not just the great beef broth but the ox tail. The ox tail was cooked so perfectly that it literally fell off the bone. And at $2 each, I honestly could just order multiple bowls. The pho was also great. There was generous helpings of meat and the broth had a nice brown color. It is not surprising why this place is Zagat rated as well as highly rated on Yelp. You know when you eat something that is the best you've ever had... and then every time you eat that same thing somewhere else and it you compare it and it doesn't quite measure up you just get disappointed? That's going to happen after you eat the pho here and then go somewhere else. It's a pet peeve of mine when people cover their pho in hoisin sauce and siracha before even tasting the broth! Tips: Order everything you want when they take your order because after they give you your food, they're not coming back. I have no clue why it took me so long to review P79. This is my favorite pho restaurant in all of Orange County. I have a routine when I go to any pho place, I usually sip the broth without adding any of Sriracha, hoisin sauce or lemon. If I don't need to add any of those items in, then you know you have some legit pho in front of you. What I usually do is I have a small dipping bowl on the side to dip the meat in if I want to add a little more flavor to the meat but it's not like the meat needs any more flavor to begin with! What I usually order is the pho chin ve nhu which is the beef pho with tender pieces of meat. We also order a side of ox tail and the best part, it's only $2! After all these years, Pho 79 still makes the best darn soup of any sort... period. The broth is to die for; extremely flavorable in a wholesome way instead of being bland or artificial testing. Came here for a nice Pho dinner around the area. Was seated really quickly after putting in our names, a lot of people were in and out when my girlfriend and I got here. For the food, I ordered a charbroiled pork plate, which had rice, and some veggies, and a bowl of soup. I also tried some of my girlfriends beef pho bowl. They were both really good. Decent sized portions, and nothing that stood out too much from other Pho places I've been to, other than that additional soup that came with my plate. I had no idea a restaurant in Garden Grove could accumulate so many Zagat ratings, not to mention the most important, Best of Yelp award! Special shout outs to Grace, Roo, and Mike for the oxtail suggestion. Who knew that #31 with a side order of oxtail (still $1.50) could be so satisfying??? Pho 79 does have bun and com dishes on the menu as well. So those who are not fans of pho, or perhaps have a spouse who is not a fan (who said that?) trust that you can find something on the menu to please everyone. The large bowl of pho is large enough for two people to share. I did not try the appetizers, but from what I saw at other people's tables it looked good! I got a medium order for pho tai and I can't complain about anything! Right at the heart of Vietnamese town lies a little pho joint that doesn't stand out much by the exterior of the restaurant. But don't be mistaken...why lies inside is a gem! The secret ingredient of this place isn't the actual pho, but it's the fall of the bone ox tail.! They cook that thing to perfection! You actually have to wait around 15-20 min after ordering your food to get the ox tail. Every table usually order 2-3 tails, but one is enough to fully enjoy the dish. I highly recommend trying this place because you're not going to find a more authentic pho joint within a 50 miles radius with ox tails that juicy. Be prepare to wait between 20-30 min if you go during lunch or dinner time. This place seems to always be busy but I guess that's how you rate a good restaurant from a bad one. We come from the SGV and there are tons of pho restaurants around but his standard is soo high that none of those taste "good" to him... most of them are just alright. The food was fantastic. However, one of employees gave us rude attitude. He told us that we could pay with Zelle before we sat at the table. At one point he came to our table to ask if we needed help and we said no thank you. At the end to pay we asked if we could Zelle him to pay for the bill and he rudely and frustratedly said that he had already asked us but we said no. We then realized we misunderstood him earlier as well as he misunderstood us. We couldn't understand his accent and he began getting aggressive with us getting loud, walking away and back to us, pointing at us. He tried explaining his method of us zelleing him 40 and him giving us 40 dollars in cash. We started feeling uncomfortable with the situation but when we asked why 40 if our bill is 30 he got more aggressive. We couldn't understand him and he tried typing in my Zelle app for me which I did not appreciate. He said he was busy and had to help other customers which was very rude. We were already having trouble understanding his accent and him being aggressive made it worse, we didn't want to speak with him anymore and wished for him to leave us alone. He yelled at us and we told him to stop his attitude. We ended up going to the ATM to get cash to pay for the food and still he didn't apologize for his attitude or the misunderstanding. Best pho in Westminster.. well maybe a tie with Pho Kimmy. This has a slightly less sweet broth than Kimmy and makes you think there is less MSG ( i hear there's none put in but i dont believe it, maybe just very little). Lines and wait can be a drag at anytime and it may catch you off guard as it closes Wednesday afternoons as well. Parking lot is small but you can park along the restaurant on the right during entry.
