I believe the broth makes the pho. I've been to many pho places in SoCal and this place is probably my favorite in the South Bay Area. I love the soup. It's very flavorful and I can't seem to figure out why it seems more so than other places. I probably like more flavor in the broth than most but this place really hits the spot. The noodles are the thinner kind and goes well with the soup. I like tendon and tripe so I get #18 Pho Gan Sach and they give you plenty, even on a small size. I love that they have different sizes because I usually can't finish a bowl. I've ordered the small here and haven't ever been able to finish it, but I have a much smaller appetite then most. I usually like to take food home if I can't finish it but pho is good fresh. Don't worry, I usually have my big eater bf with me. There's also medium, large and extra-large so I'm sure most people will find a suitable size for them. The only other thing I've ever had here were the summer rolls. Best pho in South Bay. Oops, typo. Best Pho in most of places in the States. Born and raised in Vietnam, therefore, no pho here will get a 5-star rating (obviously my bar is high due to the said reason...lol) I'm currently living in Philly and only visit my family in CA once in a while. Despite having a large community of Vietnamese people in Philly, there is no place that has good beef pho (my own preference). Also, i tried couple of places in Wesminster, Santa Ana, even San Jose, SF and other states you name it. But Pho Hong Long is always on my recommended list (for Pho particularly im not commenting on their other offerings). I personally think the broth is generic anywhere. But Pho Hong Long gets what nobody does, the delightful, aromatic, and well balanced of spices and fish sauce. Tbh I don't think you should get anything else at Pho Hong Long. First of all, this place is way overhyped. My brother and I came here to try a new pho place. We saw that this place had 4 stars and thought it would be good. Wrong! We both ordered the Dac Biet pho bowl and Vietnamese coffee. The bowls had a little bit of meat but a lot of noodles. The noodles came all clumped together and it was hard to separate. Thus, the noodles were hard and not soft. The only thing we liked from our order was the Vietnamese coffee. Trust me, save your money and try other pho places. I remember going to this place for the longest time even before yelp... but couldn't believe that I have not taken the time to write a review about this place yet. Recently due to the cold weather while craving some super warm and flavorful soup has led me back to Pho Hong Long and finally I can write a good updated review about this place. This place is still the bomb!!! Although I'm not Vietnamese or a specialist in Pho consuming, lots and lots of word of mouth states that this is the best place South of Little Saigon area... You know what? I don't think that they are over-exaggerating one bit at all. Pho Hong Long is located literally across the street from El Camino College in Lawndale/Gardena section of town. (on corner of Crenshaw/Manhattan Beach Blvd) It sits nicely in a tiny plaza next to IHOP so if you are driving by definitely use the IHOP for identification otherwise you may miss it because it's not the biggest place in the world. Once you are there, you will notice a small spot that has about say 10-12 tables? (If my memory serves me correctly) but seats opens up pretty quickly because the service is pretty on par. (Not terrific as it's an Asian joint but definitely quick and fast!) They got a ton of noodles on the menu but no matter what you get there the broth is super savory and delicious! So here is what I usually get when I'm here (especially during cold months) #25 -- traditional combo pho... it's got everything in there! All the bells and whistles such as tendons, flank steak, tripe, rare steak, etc... served along side a dish full of bean sprouts / basil / jalapeno! Again... the sauce is terrific! Beef Stew noodle bowl... Not sure which number is this but this is my personal favorite. It doesn't come with the typical pho style soup but this rich and delicious broth top one of my all time list (But still can't beat my always favorite Meat stew noodle Taiwanese style!) But I strongly recommend this bowl of noodle because it's not the typical pho yet is so rich and tasty! Double thumbs up! Another one of my favorites is not a bowl of noodle, but it's their spring rolls! They usually come out hot and fresh and the crunch is just right.... I can imagine it now.... "crunch!" Very tasty indeed! Although I am an adventurous eater, I can also be a creature of habit as these are my usual dishes here at Pho Hong Long. But I do believe that with any noodles that you get here, you will definitely enjoy the broth that goes along with the noodle or the topping of your choice! Here is a great hint! They also sell broth only for $2.50 (typically when I buy the noodle to go I usually mix it with a glass of water to dilute because the flavor is so rich and I can multiply my quantity of broth! So for those who love them a good soup, you can just buy the soup only to go for $2.50! And if noodle is what you want but knowing that it's typical restaurant portions, buy yourself a huge bag of Pho noodles and get the broth here! LOL! Anyway to stretch a dollar right? So give them a try if you are a southbayer who has not been to Pho Hong Long! The price of pho ranges from $5.75 - $7.75 (again hope my memory serves me correctly) For small to XXL bowls of pho! This place receives a 4/5 because it is not of the cleanest places I'd recommend. Alas, do not be discourages, as the price and taste of this place is Pho'bulous! Alright... prior to going Pho Hong Long I've always been accustom to what some might call "Korean" Pho. Ugh... how ignorant of real flavor and oleaginous broths I can be! It wasn't long till I made Pho Hong Long THE place to go for my sharp, but sudden, Pho cravings. No longer will I be fooled with such imitations and deceiving marketing campaigns of other "Pho" places; my palate has been educated. As you stare into the murky cloudy pho broth you start to wonder what sort of bones, meats, car oils they used to create such a distinct and flavorful taste. Don't bothering thinking to hard, just lower your spoon and give it a taste, your mind is easily convinced that whatever they did , they did a good job. It's no wonder my Vietnamese friends all rave about this place. The menu is fully loaded with not just Pho, but all sorts of other spectacular goodies. I personally enjoy their shrimp spring rolls with peanut sauce, YUM! I've also been to this place at least 15 times and all 15 times that I have ordered Pho, the taste was consistent and great! That's a definite plus! They have bowl sizes from small to XX-large. I'm a heavy eater, but I could never finish both the noodles and the broth of an X-large. The restaurant itself, in terms of service, is primarily in the hands of two individuals: one that sits behind the register and the one taking the orders. As of late they added a second hand to help with with service. The size isn't too big, but seats at least 30. Inside of the restaurant there's a fish tank with only 1 massive fish! Pho Hong Long is REALLY ugly-- fishtank with sad-looking fish, pastel drawings of horses on black paper, mauve curtains, tippling Formica tables, exposed kitchen. BUT, their pho is excellent-- I got the medium pho tai gau ($5.75), and it came piled high with lots of cilantro and onions, with a huge wad of noodles puddling at the bottom through an rich broth. I am basing this review off of multiple visits, where if I had written this after the first time I went, it would have been a 4-star review because on the first go-around, they were a little stingy with the meat and gave me lemons instead of limes, which happens every now and again when I go eat pho and is deeply annoying. However, all of the other times I've been back to Hong Long, they've been generous with the meat and have not insulted me with lemons, so 5 stars it is! 3/7/07 EDIT: Drove by today and they were closed! Worst pho ever. And we based our visit on all the reviews claiming it is the best pho. I know many will disagree but here is the breakdown of what we got and why it was so horrible: - Fried egg rolls - This was the best dish we had, but that's not saying much since they were just plain average. - Beef stew - This was extremely tasteless and I was given two pieces of meat and one large piece of cartilage and lots of carrots. I always judge the flavor of pho/stew at a Vietnamese restaurant by how much hoisin sauce I have to put in it. After being far from entertained and sadly unsatisfied with what she got at Thai Lai, co-worker Lisa H. suggested that the lunch crew go eat at Pho Hong Long for some 'real pho'. Taking her advice, we trekked over to Hong Long's last Friday for our end of the week fun lunch. The parking lot is quite small for the number of businesses in the area, but we were lucky enough to score some parking. When we walked up to the restaurant, we were the first name on the list to be seated. I immediately notice one of the servers grabbing the tip dish and emptying it into a trash can. WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING LADY?! THROWING MONEY INTO THE... oh wait.. is that whole trash can a tip box? Oh crap! That's a tip trash can! Hah! There was a trash can that said 'No Trash' because it was where they keep all their tip! Strange! BUT AWESOME!! So we get seated in less than 5 minutes, which is precious when you're on our lunch schedule. Looking at the menu, the way their set up is this - you can customize how much food and what food you get with your pho: With the Beef Noodle Soup: Small: $5.50; Medium: $6.25; Large: $6.75; X-Large: $7.75 You can choose any combination of: Raw beef, cooked beef, beef tendon, and beef tripe. This is a really good vietnamese restaurant. I've come here so many times, everytime is very enjoyable. Its good for both dining in, and taking food to go! The people working there are nice. They help you get a seat when it starts to get crowded. Sometimes when going around 11:30 or 12:30 noon-ish lunch time, its usually full and packed with people. If wanting to eat there, its a bit of a wait, coz there's limited amount of table/seatings. Its not a great big place, but the wait is decent depending on how many people there is waiting ahead of you. Though if waiting for a while, they food just makes up for the wait! Another side note, the parking gets packed also. since the parking lot isn't so big so it may sometimes take a bit to find a spot to park. When I dine in, I usually order the the beef noodle special soup combo. Its got a little bit of everything in it. There's the beef slices/flanks, beef tendons and tripe. The serving portions are always large. The bowl are always full and plentiful! The bean spourt veggies are yummy, and the mint leafs just adds yet another tasty flavor to the already great tasting soup! YUM!!! Mmmmmm soup~!!! I love it here. On cold days just having this noodle soup makes seem even more delicious. Guess this just hits the spot when feeling chilled on a cold day. read more

This is the best pho EVER! Noodle is noodle. It's the broth and the beef that makes it a great bowl of pho. My test of great pho is the bottom of the bow. My friends joke that I've "done the dishes" when I finish my pho here. The broth is super flavorful and the beef is nice and tender. I really want to know how long that broth is simmering for! Once in a long while, my broth doesn't get to me hot enough to cook the bean sprouts (can't stand raw sprouts). But that's not enough of a deterrent for me to not return. The bowls also come in different sizes, so no worries if you want more or less. After being denied once by coming on a wednesday (when they're closed), I was able to check out this place. The pho is pretty tasty, the broth has some good flavor to it. The broth however was a bit more oily than all other places I've been to. Also, I would've like to see the broth come out in a hotter temperature. Most time after having pho, I'm working up a pretty good sweat, but nothing like that here. The broth was barely hot enough to cook the rare meat. But these are more nit picky things that don't overshadow the fact that the pho is pretty good here. Overall this place is a 3.5 star. Went with a friend who loves this place so I had high expectations. The restaurant itself looks a bit dated, but I'm totally ok with that as long as the food shines. I like that they offer different sizes. We both opted for the small so that we could share the eggroll appetizer. About 5 mins after ordering, the waiter comes to our table to tell us they're completely out of eggrolls. Boooo! Our bowls of pho arrived soon after. I got the rare steak and cooked beef (don't know what the cut was). The broth was very dark in color and deep in flavor. The soup is garnished with cilantro, onions, green onions and they give you a plate of fresh bean sprouts, limes, jalapeno slices, and fresh basil. They were generous with the meat, and the slices were tender. They would have received a 4 star review had it not been for 1) the spoons at our table were dirty. The first one my friend picked up had a piece of dried cilantro on it, and the three that I looked at were all greasy...didn't seem like they were well washed. Bleh. And 2) being out of eggrolls is a cardinal sin. People love the eggrolls...I'm sure Pho places sell gobs of eggrolls. I had the small Pho Dac Biet. Generous portions and I would describe the flavor as being more home-y. Not to my taste but hits the spot. The plaza is pretty gritty and the interior is rather sparse. Our usual spot, Saigon Dish was closed, so we were left to explore another option, which I don't mind, except when the food is laced with MSG. The pho was oily and greasier than I like, and the flavor was okay, but I can't overcome the MSG. It's a deal breaker for me. The staff is friendly,but nothing else about this place was worth me ever coming back here...not even in a bind. I have seen this restaurant right across from my college for 3 years and never once I have gone in. I was so curious what Vietnamese food was like, and there's a place that serves Vietnamese food! My curiosity were aroused and I finally decided to check the restaurant out with my friend. When I entered, I though My friend and I had to wait because all of the tables were taken by at least 2 people each, but to my surprise and mild dismay, the guy that saw me entering the restaurant led us to a table already occupied by 2 men in suits. They didn't took notice of us joining them at all. I was surprised and a bit excited. I was experiencing a bit of Vietnam where people who go out to a restaurant probably share the same table with complete strangers! The waiter somehow took notice that we were deaf (maybe he saw me signing to my friend...) so he took 2 menus and gave one to me and another to my friend then he asked if we know what we want to drink. My friend (thanks god she's hard of hearing) asked if there's a list of special Vietnamese drink that we may like. The waiter gestured to her to give her the menu with a smile on her face, and turned it over. There on the back of the menu is a very long list of different kinds of drinks. I have never seen such variety of drinks! My friend who seemed to be very familiar with the list already asked for 2 Thai iced tea! I was amazed but a bit annoyed that she ordered for me with out asking me what I want. However, I guess she already knew that I'll fall in love with the iced tea because that was where virginity to Thai iced tea was broken. My friend ordered a pork plate, I ordered a pho. I don't remember which one, but when I had the soup set in front of me, an extra plate all for me was set in front of me as well. The plate contained sprouts, some kind of basil, and I think the green spicy thing was chili. At first I had no idea what to do with them until I saw the 2 guys sitting next to us put some of the stuff from their own plate into the pho, so I did what they did. I took my first bite of the meat then all of a sudden I was in pho heaven. Ha ha. Okay... that's very dry. Moving on... Not only the restaurant have pho but they also have plates, egg rolls, and so forth. I tried a piece of meat from my friend's plate, it was overly dry, so I decided to avoid the plates. In addition to Thai iced tea, they also have Thai iced coffee, and hot Thai coffee as well, and a lot of weird drink which involves raw eggs. I guess that's why a "B" was posted... yes, I eat in a "B" restaurant; if it's not clean enough for "A" but it's clean enough to open its doors for business, then it's clean enough! So I was writing this long essay regarding my take on this restaurant and phone shut off. Arghh...! Okay. So if you don't mind the highly msg, and the small bowl, marked as regular, not enough broth. Now anyone who loves pho, it's all in the broth. So as to provide a small bowl to make it look full, bad idea. Go ahead and measure the amount you wanna give me, but give me a bowl big enough to mix my noodles. Clearly not enough broth to soak the noodles, imagine after you throw in the condiments and fluff the noodles, it'll looks as though you might have ordered the vermicelli bowl instead. Okay so I didn't mind, giving a shot. Then I saw flies, that's when I got really turned off. Didn't finish my meal and mentioned that to the young register guy, he said he had mentioned that a few times to the owner, apparently they didn't do anything about it, it apparently I wasn't the only one to said that. Most patrons are, not pho eaters. This is a cheap eats, abundance, if you care about amounts. Flavors are semi-there, depending on your pho palates. I think I'll stick to Saigon Dish. Went here few times because it's right in front of my house but this place gets dirtier and dirtier. We ordered two pho and one spring roll the other day and they didn't cut it in half, which made us hard to eat it. I asked them if they could cut it in half for us and the server noded but didn't take the roll with him. Instead he gave me a rusted pair of scissor. Scissor even looked like stationary scissor so I asked someone else but that person also gave me a rusted scissor. Table is sticky, nobody responds to you unless you make an eye contact. Bad service and unsanitary place to eat a meal. I wonder how they got their A rating in the first place. read more
