Vietnamese taste buds here. I can't believe the aggregate rating of Pho Lu is 4 stars! Allow me to explain. We decided to come here for some late night eats (9pm). Place was nearly at capacity, but the wait wasn't too bad for three. Once seated, we ordered the pork spring rolls. Your standard fare, tasty stuff. I myself got the "XL" pho tai. What arrived certainly was not deserving of the XL nomenclature. As well the broth lacked flavor and the meat was dry, also flavorless. In all honesty, it was definitely disappointing. Service, like at any Vietnamese restaurant, is laughable at best. Pho Lu takes the cake for worst service though. Our check arrived with our food, we were never checked up on, and if we ever needed anything I literally had to flag someone down like a cabby. The best thing about eating pho is that the meal always comes out to about $20- and that's for 2 people! AND that's including drinks for 2 people and an appetizer. Now that's what I call an affordable meal! I alternate between coming here and the "Orange Wall Pho Restaurant" (see previous post on Pho Thang Long). Although this restaurant is a bit smaller than the Orange Wall restaurant, it is a step better because the taste of their broths are just better! I've tried their vermicelli, their wonton egg noodles, their pho, their egg rolls, their spring rolls, their vietnamese iced coffee, their thai iced tea and I must say, I have not been disappointed about any of the dishes I have ordered yet! The service here is okay; but it's okay because I need a no muss no fuss kind of place when I am eating pho. I also get my food in less than 5 minutes! I always leave happy and satisfied after leaving Pho Lu and the great thing about it is that it is the same plaza as Tastea, which is perfect because I can get my dessert drink by just taking a mini stroll over. This review is on their to-go. Apparently they don't know how to pack food to go, all my containers for pho were spilt and lids were cracked. Instead of giving me a box with all he containers they gave me 2 bags for 4 containers of soup, 4 containers of ox tail in the soup container, 4 boxes of noodles, 1 small container of pho fat, big bag of herbs, and 2 small onion/cilantro bag. Due to the overload of items they stuffed in there it caused the containers to crack. They even gave me the wrong noodles, I asked for uncooked noodles and came home with cooked noodles. read more

Girlfriend and I joined our parents for lunch here. I was personally surprised because they've never talked about this place, but my parents have their weird phases where they get obsessed with one place and move on to the next. I thought the pho here was decent; no more, no less. I've definitely had better around the area, especially across the street. If I was joining my parents here for pho again I probably wouldn't mind, but I'd never come here on my own. The broth was decent, the serving size for the meat and noodles were average, but slightly off ratio compared to how much soup I got though. The egg rolls were decent, but you can't really screw up egg rolls unless you over fry them, I guess. Their banh canh here was pretty disappointing though. A lot of places seem to be hit or miss depending on how *they* prepare and cook their banh canh. The banh canh here is the reddish-yellow kind, just *slightly* thicker than your average soup broth. It's almost like they mixed a little bit of bun rieu broth in it, but that's just my perception as well as my girlfriend's. The flavor to me was off and there wasn't a whole lot of seafood in it. I'd avoid this and get something else. Overall, I'm just glad that our experience wasn't like some of the 1 or 2 star experiences others have had recently. I will never come back to this place at all. You will think that because we have been going through a lot with covid and specially Asian community, they will be more compassionate towards other race but nope. The way they looked at my boyfriend when he entered the restaurant it's beyond sad and the fact that nobody answered when he asked about our order it's unbelievable. This place just hit the spot. I was meeting the bf for a late dinner and he found this place on yelp (thank y'all!). It had high ratings (deservedly so) and most importantly, it was open! We got seated immediately. After thumbing through the lengthy menu, I settled on the Bun Cha Gio, Tom, Thit Nuong (Vermecelli with egg rolls, shrimp and BBQ pork) and the bf got pho. He got served first, and of course, I HAD to plunge my spoon in to get a taste of the broth. O.M.G... even without the hoisin and rooster sauces, it had SO MUCH flavor! I snuck in a few more sips when he went to the bathroom to wash his hands. (Shhh!!!) Shortly after I got my bun. I really liked how thinly they cut the lettuce. I know that's a weird thing to point out first, but it really helped when I was mixing up my bowl to coat the dish with the nuoc mam. I came here because the line at Pho 79 was ridiculous, and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the pho. The broth was flavorful and the meat quality was decent, although they do kinda skimp on the noodles. The restaurant itself is modern and clean and everything on the menu is moderately priced. I really liked the eggrolls here because they use rice paper wrappers, and it comes with plenty of lettuce, mint leaves and string carrots. I wouldn't mind coming back here again when I'm in the mood for pho. Pho is not one of my favorite things to eat, so I might not be the pickiest person on this subject. But honestly, I don't get the people who say that the broth tastes like crap. There are a million pho places in this one square mile area of Garden Grove, and you know what? This place is popping at night and I've heard their oxtail pho is legit. Asked if they could do a fried tofu vermicelli since it wasn't on the menu and they totally did. With that service alone I would have given four stars but the overall experience + the taste of my meal was only able to warrant three stars. The fried tofu was a little too chewy. The vermicelli a was just okay. The flavor (dressing) didn't pop like other Vietnamese places I go to (tasted a little diluted to me). And I don't know if this is a common ingredient or if it's regional, but they put dandelion greens in it along with the usual veggies (lettuce, bean sprouts, pickled carrots etc) and it just gave my vermicelli a funky taste. I was starving and craving some pho, last minute as I was wandering around in a city I am not familiar with that ha a ton of pho places, I ended up at pho lu! What attracted me there was the floor to ceiling glass walls that surround the place. I gazed starvingly into the restaurant at happy people slurping noodles galore and quickly made a right turn into the parking lot. The parking lot is shared by a bunch of other restaurants and stores so in other words, it's packed... you mg hr be driving around stalking people walking in the parking lot for a space so get there with a little more time if you are limited. Once inside, I was enveloped in the savory smell of pho. I knew right away, I was going to leave smelling like it too...and trying to prepare myself to tell everyone that it was pho and not body odor they were smelling! (It's happened before...) I ordered the Pho tai with extra meat and no onions and green onions. (Note: is you order it that way, they also don't put the cilantro in so let them know you want the cilantro.) The food came out relatively fast. The first thing I do is always try the broth...man was I not disappointed! It was delicious! Before I knew it, I had inhaled the whole bowl. There are three sizes and I ordered the medium. (I had looked over and saw the large at the table next to me, I thought they were in a eating competition the bowls were so big!) When it came time to pay, that's when it got a little weird. We motioned for the check, they brought it and dropped it off at the table and then just stood there staring at us. 2 minutes passed by...I felt so awkward and pressured that I put out a card. They looked at it, looked at me and then walked away. Puzzled I looked at my colleague and shook my head. They brought it back out and put the check down. The server then continued his wait by the table and his staring. By this time, my colleague and I were laughing. It is soooo awkward! We waiting a few more minutes to see if he'd walk away. Nope! I'm like good lord ladies, (must be sisters working at the time), you both have a ton of gold and diamond jewelry on and you are giving paying customers a hard time paying with the only payment option we brought. you have no signs and we were not warned of your crappy cash payment only requirement. what is wrong you both?? they said nothing and just charged us on the credit cards we brought. now for those who dont know, using a credit card charges us a small and i mean small amount to use this machine. and we technically are paying for the use as they arent paying us to pay the visa/master card company system. greedy as hell i say. the food cost was not cheap either. so you all are curious what the charge would be. most system charges the customer roughly about 35 cents to run the credit card. worst case scenario, they could be charged around 55 cents in total. that's really the worst case for a $25 meal of one. and my buddy paid for his own. so dont come here people i tell ya its not worth the grief. read more

Came here just for their pho ap chao which is this crispy pan fried rice noodle with a thick sauce and your choice of protein. It was so crispy and satisfied my cravings. I've had their pho here before and it's pretty standard. We also ordered their bun thit nuong which was a grilled beef vermicelli bowl which was just alright. My friend said it had star anise pieces inside that would have to be spit out. Overall, food was alright but the service was quite strange. With such a large concentration of Vietnamese food in the area, Pho Lu is a decent contributor to the cuisine. It's also convenient that it's one of the few places open after 11 PM to satiate a pho craving. The bowls come in 3 sizes: regular, medium and large. Pricing is on the higher side compared to the competition, albeit it's justified solely based on the enormous portions of noodles and meat you're given. All the meats typically found in pho are available, and they also offer filet mignon and oxtail. The most important aspect of pho is the broth. At Pho Lu, the broth is middle of the pack. It's flavorful and on the sweeter side. It lacks the depth and complexity found at other places, but it's still satisfying. It's also extremely hot, which is perfect for cooking your meats. However, due to the higher temperature, it presents a dilemma if you don't eat fast enough because it'll overcook your rare steak. I recommend the rare steak (tai) and fatty brisket (gau). These 2 cuts are arguably the best, regardless of whether it's the first time you've tried pho or have had it for all your life. The rare steak is the staple cut and as such, it's held to a higher standard. The rare steak here is thinly sliced and large in diameter, is tender with good flavor. It's lightly submerged in broth by the kitchen to start the cooking process and will finish in your bowl as you eat. The fatty brisket is well done and has a lot of flavor as a result of the fat cap that accompanies almost every slice. The meat itself is still relatively tender. The noodles here are a great compromise of texture. It strikes a fine balance between too soft and too firm, settling in at a medium firmness and slightly chewy. You can still slurp them without fear of them breaking, but it can be a challenge to get some with your chopsticks and not have them break as you're extricating them from the broth. The veggies you get are fresh and plentiful. The leaves here are a lot larger than usual and show very little signs of aging or damage. You also get a lot of jalapeno slices for a natural kick of spice to the broth if you so choose, and a good amount of lime wedges to add some acidity to and counterbalance the richness of the broth. A large quantity of bean sprouts is given as well, and you can request to have them cooked prior to service. If you've got a voracious appetite, the egg rolls are a good appetizer to start with. For only 3 egg rolls, $6.50 is rather pricey. The egg rolls are cut in half and aren't that crispy, but they come with a large amount and variety of vegetables to wrap them up in. The filling inside the egg rolls is par for the course in terms of flavor and composition. The service is fast, polite and bilingual. Most of the staff handling your food wear nitrile gloves, but it's tough to determine how often they replace them or if they're touching anything else in between the bowls, which would render the gloves a moot point. read more

This pho place is open late so they get a lot of traffic. Been here multiple times because hours of operation. We will review on a time that I did not accept the service here but will still not be bias towards the entire restaurant experience overall. I have tried the pho and com tam here Pho tai bo vien Broth (3.5) - is more tasteful then other places I have tried. Not over the too salty and not bland so that good to me. Does have the pho smell so I do enjoy there broth here. Noodle (2.0- 2.5) - you can see that they don't make it fresh it is still stuck to the bowl and sometimes it hard to break up. That's almost standard here now to most pho places so they can dish out faster volume plates for customers. Meat (3.5) - I usually get the Tai on the side so it's soft and has a good taste for me. But they should bring a side of hot broth to go with it like other places has so you can cook it better if customer don't want the meet resin in their pho. Portion (3.5) - they give decent size portion. But upgrading for extra amount I really don't see a difference so I would not recommend. Price (3.0) - is a little more then average but considered how late they open it understandable. Staff (2.0-2.5) - this place sometimes get high volume so I get it can be overwhelming but incident happen here that I did not like and accept. My pho came out and I explain to the server do not bring the hot bowl over our 2 year old daughter's head because it might spill and might burn her. They said sorry and I was okay with that. 2nd bowl came and the server did it again. I got upset and stop them before they continue. They had the audacity to say don't worry they were extra careful. The problem here is the customer has ask you in a nice manner not do whatever they are asking that they feel is uncomfortable to them. So after the incident the entire evening the server gave us the vibes that we were making it a big deal. Since then I have not taken my family back. Overall staff isn't as a tentative as to refill water or tea and checking up on the customers. Been here different times and I have seen tables that still have dirty plates and no one cleaning them during slow times. I personally don't want to see that during my entire meal and no one to clean it when it's not busy. Presentation- (3.0) - standard nothing stands out Environment (3.0) - this place is more on the dark side not enough light. This place is definitely not kid friendly as I have been here multiple times without them and I can see is more for older kids and up. But for babies or 3/4 years and under it can be a bit of a problem. Location is on Brookhurst and Westminster in the taste plaza. This place has a bad sewer smell that needs to be reported. But thankfully can not smell at the pho lu area. This place overall for food wise is a good choice depending on time. Food is good enough for me to enjoy and come back again just not with family unless with all adults. Com suong Rice (4.0) - if you can't make rice for a Vietnamese place your in the wrong business. Standard. Meat (2.5-3.0) - since the 2 times I order this dish I have to conclude that their meat isn't as good as I wish it to be. Either it get burnt in some parts or the meat is too chewy. Soup (3.0) - I would like it to be more hot when it comes out but warm but still decent soup taste. Sauce (2.5-3.0) - I don't like this style fish sauces or com tam sauce they give out probably just not for me but it more on the saltier side. Presentation (3.0) - nothing stands out Bonus note their pho ap chao (crispy) I think is one of the more better dish I have tried in garden grove. Over this place is probably more focus on the pho because sometimes I go late at night and they only serve pho. At least their pho is good enough where I will still go and recommend.
