Came here on a Tuesday morning because we were in the mood for hot soup or pho. Found this place through Yelp and decided to give it a try. The place is easy enough to find, in Mira Mesa, off of Mira Mesa Boulevard. It is adjacent/attached right next to Lucky Seafood Market. There is plenty of parking in this shopping center. The place is clean and spacious with a lot of seating available. There were a couple of other customers aside from us, and maybe 2-3 customers that came in to pick up orders to go while we dined there. After we browsed the menu, the wifey ordered a seafood soup with shrimp and crab (3/5). I decided to try their beef stew with French Bread (3/5). Both dishes ended up being just okay. The seafood soup was okay, as the crab is imitation and the broth is not the most flavorful. The beef stew was a bit bland and came out warm (no steam when stirring). There's something about food that just comes out warm, that makes it less appetizing (at least for me). The actual beef was tender, but had too much fat and the portion of the stew was on the smaller side. Our server was attentive and pleasant. We recognized her (and she recognized us) from another pho restaurant we frequent. When I paid the bill, I interacted with someone else (who was also friendly). Service here was good. I think we will probably try their pho next time. Everything else about this place was good. Pho lucky has been here for a long time. They did have a long hiatus and everything was remodeled and changed. So it's nice inside with pretty much new everything (decor, furniture silverware, etc). They still do serve pho and Vietnamese food in general but with a larger variety. Not too sure if ownership has changed or not, but I do not recognize any of the new employees. See if is meh. When asked if we wanted any appetizers, she said no? and looked shocked. Another time the waitress asked us several times, are you sure? We have also been given the wrong order several times. I do not come here for the pho anymore, it's not as good as it use to be. The pho is nothing special and is sometimes bland. Rather, I enjoy their hu trieu (dry noodles with soup on the side) and canh cua (sweet & sour fish soup). Since moving back to SD from the Bay, we've been on the hunt for our new pho spot. We also tried Pho Cow Cali & Pho Ca Dao nearby (both were very disappointing, I don't get why people enjoy those spots) and Pho Lucky is BY FAR our favorite. Broth is tastier here and with minimal MSG (I think). Didn't hate it or love it. We came on a Sunday at 12 when we saw the wait at pho cow cali. There wasn't any wait here and the restaurant itself was about half full. Service was very friendly and quick. They focus mostly on pho but I did see that they had rice plates and vermicelli salads on their menu too. I got the vegetable and tofu pho with the beef broth. My partner got the large beef pho with only brisket. The serving size and actual ingredients in the pho were good but the letdown was in the broth. I liked that it wasn't too sweet which some broths can be, but it just tasted a little bland overall. read more

They have really upgraded this restaurant since we last went there. It is beautiful inside. Maybe a tad bit too bright, but didn't take away from the experience. Service is super quick....they are fast to seat and get your order and expedite your food to your table. Granted if you order pho, that doesn't take long to get all that together. Broth is ready to go, so really its just boiling the water for your noodles and vegetables are always cut and ready to go. Attached is the picture for shaken beef and that was delicious. We used to go to one in Scripps Ranch, but that business closed, so we are on the hunt for a new place that has a perfect shaken beef. Let me know if you know of a place! My first time coming here, not bad!.... The service was really great! My friends and I each ordered a pho. I got the rare steak with tendon and tripe. My meat wasn't rare. :-( My friends both got rare steaks but mine came fully cooked, so it was a bit on the dry side. I did enjoy the broth and liked how it was served in a medal bowl to retain the heat. The bowl was slightly smaller than what I had expected for the price. I heard the owners of this restaurant also own the Lucky Seafood Market that is connected to the restaurant, so their ingredients are fresh. The bean sprouts were crisp and white, and the basil fresh. I enjoyed the pho here even though my meat was not to my liking. It's definitely worth another visit! They had closed during COVID and reopened during this year. I had a chance go swing by to grab dinner with my other half. The ambiance definitely has brightened and upgraded from what it originally used to look like. Very inviting and well lit. We were greeted before we went through the door, a server already at the door to welcome, and was told we could sit anywhere we like. It looked like if they got busy there was a sign in sheet for waitlist. When a table left, someone was immediately there to clean up. When we were ordering, someone appeared ready. Everything definitely seems modernized including the way they take orders, no longer with paper or pen. We ordered the A4. Shrimp Pork Rolls, P1. Pho Special (L), R4. Broken Rice with BBQ Pork. Their plating for their dishes look a lot more elegant then before. The rolls were nicely wrapped, tasty, good amount of peanut sauce for dipping. Not bad. If it had some crunch it would elevate the roll taste even more! The best pork paste rolls I had are from Pho Duyen Mai. Broken Rice with BBQ Pork was tasty. Meat was flavored well, and the combination worked out very well. Beautifully presented. L said the Pho Special was okay, but the main reason he liked Pho Lucky was due to the quantity of meat. One of the best places in Mira Mesa, and probably even San Diego! A friend recommended I go here, and I did! It's connected to the Lucky supermarket, and you'll find that it's pretty crowded on the weekends, but still plenty of tables for a small group. I chose the Phở Dặc Biệt, which came with beef meatball, tripe, and brisket. I checked the broth first, (which everyone should do!), and thought it was fantastic - nothing short of what you'll find in OC. They gave a great quantity of noodles and meat, and it went well with the pickled onions and green onion ends in fatty broth, so make sure you ask for those! Highly recommend!! read more

Food: 4.5/5 Service and Setting: 3/5 Value: 3/5 Pho Lucky is attached to Lucky Seafood and makes me question if their name is out of laziness or brand cohesion. Going in, the restaurant is very clean and new, contrasting their more weathered entrance. The service is very quick and brash, a sign of a great Asian restaurant. The waiters do not speak great English, so be prepared to show item numbers. While not the nicest, they are very quick in entering your order and my pho came out almost a minute after I had ordered it. Payment is done on an iPad and is quick and painless. Traumatized by downtown SD and LA parking, I will report that parking here is super easy with a giant lot that is used by other business and the supermarket. N11 Rare Steak and Well-Done Brisket Pho: 4/5 While better than other extraneous pho restaurants, nothing too mind blowing here. There is a slight lack of depth compared to my favorite pho spots but it is leagues ahead of some of the nightmarish soups I have had before. They are very generous with the amount of protein they serve, probably at least 30% more than other spots. They also serve their pho with less common herbs, one of my favorites being culantro. They even added meatballs to my bowl for free, probably substituting a little from the others. R1 Special Lucky Broken Rice: 5/5 With how good this dish is, I'm surprised that they don't just specialize in this. It comes out with rice, salad, soup, grilled pork, meatloaf, pork rind, shrimp, and fried shrimp loaf in tofu skin (tom tau hu ky). Everything was very fresh and aromatic. The meatloaf here is awesome, a true standout. Deeply meaty without any off-putting smells. A very delicate smooth and light texture with a richness that I associate with Vietnamese pate. Very very good. The tom tau hu ky is also very good and uncommon for this area. Crispy fried tofu skin with a filling reminiscent of Cantonese shrimp siu mai pairs perfectly with their light fish sauce vinaigrette. I highly recommend you try this on your visit. D27 Jelly Jack Fruit with Red Tapioca: 5/5 Though I am not Vietnamese, I have a love for the food and this is one of my favorite desserts that is hard to find. Many places cheat out and just use red colored gelatin but they do the traditional preparation and coat pieces of water chestnut with tapioca starch to create this jelly that has a crispy center. I love this dessert because it does not have any of the beans that many other Vietnamese desserts have but instead is filled with sweet and chewy jellies of all kinds such as palm seed and nata de coco. Coupled with creamy coconut milk and sweet jackfruit, this dessert is super bomb, so please order a lot so they keep it on their menu! read more

I've been to Pho Lucky a few times and the food is consistently amazing. Their pho is flavorful, fresh, and always hits the spot. However, I've had disappointing experiences with the service, especially at night. Tonight, we arrived at 7 p.m., two hours before closing, but it felt like we were being rushed out the door. The restaurant was nearly empty, yet we had to wait a long time for our bill. Meanwhile, 6-7 staff members were hanging out in the cashier area chatting, but no one came over to check on us. I eventually had to approach the counter with my card. One server came to help, but when I entered my tip, he stood uncomfortably close and stared at the screen while I finished, which made me feel really awkward. The food is top-notch, and I've had much better service during the day, so it's a shame that the nighttime staff doesn't seem to treat customers with the same level of care. Because of this, I'm giving them three stars. I really hope they can improve their service in the evenings--it's the only thing holding them back from being a solid five-star spot. read more

The staff is very attentive, bringing ice water and menus immediately. Ordered dac biet pho for lunch. It was a good and hearty meal, they gave us a lot of meat (rare steak, brisket, fatty brisket, tendon, tripe, and meatball) and veggies. I like their broth and felt very full with the portion given us. Prices for food are very fair for the amount they give you. On a cold and rainy day, I always need a bowl of pho. I got the n3 and they always provide lots of meat and the broth is always pipping hot. I came in and was greeted right away and sat me promptly and I let them know I was ready to order. The bowl came out in like 3 min pipping hot like I like it, and the first thing I had to add was siracha to give it a kick. I always get the n3 because of the flank steak and brisket. Finished my bowl in about 10 min as I was on my lunch break from work. Overall this is a great spot to go to on lunch since come cali across the street is always busy. If you want a good meal and where it's not busy this location is the spot for you and they're always happy to help you and I appreciate the atmosphere they provide. read more

This pho place is so underrated! I feel like a lot of people in the Mira Mesa area tend to gravitate towards Pho Ca Dao but this place is great. The restaurant itself is very clean inside and the service is super fast. We started off with A2 spring rolls appetizer-- I felt like more rice noodles could have been added into the rolls but the peanut sauce was very tasty. The portion sizes for the pho are huge! There is only a $1 price difference between small and large so... why not go large! The broth is very fresh and comforting-- not too salty and has a little bit of sweetness to it. The side vegetables of bean sprouts and mint leaves could be a little fresh/ better quality but they do the job. I would definitely stop by here for quick and quality pho :) read more

Lucky Pho on Mira Mesa & Black Mountain : "B or 3.5 stars" meaning "Good: a solid choice if in the area, but not a destination restaurant." Per reco's from Foodie peeps, I tried Lucky Pho today. I think I'm getting close to hitting 20 Vietnamese restaurants after 2.5 years in SD. My faves so far: Sup Noodle Bar (A) in Irvine, Shank & Bone (A-) in North Park, Pho Cow Cali (B+) on Mira Mesa and to me, the hidden gem, 40N Pho & Grille (B) in Scripps Ranch, especially their "two protein" combo, among one of the best deals in town! Upon entering Pho Lucky, I was impressed by how bright and spacious the dining room is, and in general, more comfortable than most Vietnamese restaurants in town. Like most Asian restaurants, service was efficient and impersonal, as expected and totally fine for my introverted personality. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have just Pho Tai Nam (rare beef + flank) on the menu. The choices offered were either just rare beef, or beef and flank with other cuts of meat like tripe and tendons that I don't like. I guess I could have asked for just beef & flank, but to avoid complications, we went with the plain rare beef option. Cafe Sua Da (iced Vietnamese coffee) (B ) : Coffee was properly intense, with no hint of using a powder creamer, but a little light on the condensed milk. Although I'd gladly have it again, it wasn't at the "very good" level, so a "B" is all it gets. It seems very few restaurants in SD serve this beverage with a phin filter drip and a glass of ice, a little strange since, at least for me, watching the coffee drip onto condensed milk and then mixing it together has always been part of the enjoyment! Pho Tai (rare steak) (B- ) : Thank goodness I followed the advice of peeps from SD Foodies and asked for the beef on the side...so so so much better! Thank you! The beef tasted fresh, and was quite yummy without being overcooked. The noodles were good too, appropriately al dente. Unfortunately, the broth was disappointing. It wasn't a bad tasting broth, but I couldn't taste much beef flavor at all and if someone told me it was chicken broth, I would have believed them. Bun Thit Nuong (rice vermicelli with BBQ pork) (B ) : Some restaurants don't provide enough noodles, or veggies, or pork, but here, it's a very generous and appropriate portion of everything so that when mixed together, there's a good variety of textures and flavors in every bite. The pork tasted fresh, was well marinated with a nice sweet and savory flavor, but in comparison to 40N or Pho Cow Cali, the pork lacked both smokiness & char. Overall, a good dining experience. The food across the street at Pho Cow Cali is definitely better, but with an inferior dining experience and typically, a much longer wait. 40N, two miles towards the east also has arguably better food, but comfort plays a big factor when dining out, and this is where Pho Lucky beats them both. For where I live, Pho Lucky is definitely the easiest acceptable option to satisfy a Vietnamese food craving. -------------------------------- Food Grading Scale: A+: Life changing. You remember these bites for the rest of your life. Occurs very infrequently and when it does, you'll know it. You don't even know how to further improve it with a magic wand. A: Wow! Excellent. You felt happy biting into it. You're considering whether it's life changing, but know it misses the mark. A-: Very very good. Whatever it is, it's one of the best, but you can think of further improvements. B+: Very good. Very enjoyable, not to the point of "impressive," but worth revisiting. B: Good. A solid example of whatever it is, offering enjoyment, but not enough for making an effort to get. B-: Not bad. If in a pinch to eat something, this offers some enjoyment and is a reasonable option. C+: Mediocre plus. Pretty average, but with one or two positive characteristics you can identify. C: Mediocre. "Meh". Very average. Not bad enough to make you angry, but nothing good about it at all. C-: Bad. You recognize it for what it is, but a very bad rendition. Your foodie self is a little pissed, and feeling like a dummy you ordered it. D: Awful. Pho lucky reopened after a hiatus and they did a nice remodel. Very modern and chic. Almost like it should be a coffee shop or an açaí bowl place instead of pho. Went in at about 4 on a weekday and the place was pretty empty. Pho (3/5) - the broth was tasty, vegetables clean but really hard to forgive the extraordinarily chewy fatty brisket meat. Sigh I almost choked and had to spit it out. I think plane rare steak and meatball would be a better choice. Spring rolls (5/5) nice and fresh. Good sauce and had a stick of cucumber, good ratio of meat to noodles/veggies Hi tieu nam vang (4/5) super rare to see this dish at a viet restaurant in San Diego done right. The sauce was on point the noodles were great. The only problem is some of the organs they put in weren't tender enough and tough. If you don't like eat pork heart, liver or intestines, skip this type of junk tieu and get the shrimp and crab one. I got mine dry with a side of soup. Great find! As soon as you pull up you will see it's just to the left of Lucky Seafood Market, thus Pho Lucky. I have never shopped at Lucky Seafood before, so I didn't notice this until it popped up in my search. We were craving pho and are so happy we found this place! We ordered: 1. Pho Tai: the bigger bowl, and wow, it was so big and filled with so many slices of steak! In fact, the two of us couldn't finish eating all the meat so we had to bring it home. But I just had to spoon every bit of the exceptional broth. Some people often don't even eat the broth. Usually at restaurants it's hard to notice the flavor of specific spices in a heavily salted beef base. But I loved that this broth was not too salty or sweet, so the aromatic star anise, clove, coriander and cinnamon really shone through! Take your time and smell and taste every spoonful deeply! Another cool find was the use of ngò ôm as one of the greens served with the pho. I have never seen this at any other of the dozens of pho restaurants I have been to. It's a common addition in south Vietnam and Cambodia. Wikipedia says it has notes of lemon and cumin and so I ate every leaf very carefully and concur. It is slightly bitter though so I would recommend just steeping it in the broth. I love discovering new herbs and seasonings, so this was really great! 2. Cha gio: 3 rolls - and I was so glad I didn't order the larger size with 7! We were stuffed! Between eating these and the pho, I could barely waddle out the door. The nước chấm dipping sauce had the perfect balance - not too sweet or salty- for the crispy rolls which I ate wrapped in green lettuce and fresh mint. Each one was perfectly crispy and very hot inside. Service was lightning fast. And I loved the decor and cleanliness too. I will definitely back to try more dishes! read more

After a few years hiatus, Pho Lucky is under new management and opened again. This was my mom's favorite pho place pre pandemic. It is not my fiancé's go-to place but we all came here today to give it a try. We got pho filet mignon ($16), oxtail pho ($17) and com tam dac biet lucky ($12.99). The first thing we noticed when it came out, was the stainless steel bowl and plates. It mimics Phoholic in OC. Which is the best pho, in our opinion. If it's anything like that then this place is a winner. The broth was clear, had the strong aroma and a tad bit sweet. With a few limes, I made the broth just the way I like it. My fiancé is sensitive to MSG which is a reason why he's picky. He detected a tad but not enough to give him a reaction. The filet was super thin and tender. The oxtail had a lot of meat. The oxtail soup also comes with other meats such as the rare steak. The broken rice dish came with pork skin, grilled pork, fried bean curd, and egg meatloaf. The egg loaf was moist and had the orange yolk color on the top layer. The fried bean curd was crispy. Grilled pork was charred and flavorful. During the grand opening period, you get a free soft drink. This place has potential, it's decent and it's conveniently located off the highway and has plenty of parking. read more

Utensils available at the table as well as condiments and napkins. Service is friendly and fast. Restaurant was clean. Large bowls had a very good ratio of meat to noodles. Meat was plentiful but broth was slightly lacking in depth. Easily doctored up with the fresh herbs, lime, hoisin sauce and Sriracha provided. Overall good value and definitely worth eating again for that price point, but would benefit from more development of flavor in the broth. read more

I ate here for the first time yesterday because I didn't want to deal with the crowds at other restaurants. I knew this place was re-opened, so I expected to be seated quickly. Let me tell you, I've only eaten here once, but I can confidently say I had the best bowl of pho here. You heard me correctly, the best! The broth is incredible, with all of the essence and spices. They give us rice patty herbs as well as all of the toppings like bean sprouts and basil. And their sambal is homemade, with fresh blended chilis and chunks of garlic. I ordered the combination pho, which had the most tender cuts of beef and beef balls! My personal favorite! I rotate between this place and Pho Cow Cali regularly. I often get the combo Pho, which has meatballs in it (Pho Cow Cali combo 1 does not), which is nice! The broth is solid, on the lighter less heavy in star anise, which is refreshing during a hangover! Ive also gotten their Egg Noodle soup with cha shiu, and vermicelli bowl with grilled shrimp on sugarcane. They are both decent! Came on a weekday night, and it was fairly empty when we came in! This is a welcome site given how busy some of the other Vietnamese restaurants are in Mira Mesa. And honestly, this place should probbaly be busier than it actually is! Its right next to Lucky Seafood, so lots of parking is available. The inside is very clean and newly furnished. There is a lot of seating, and their menu is simple and large! Everything you would expect from a Vietnamese Pho spot plus a few more things. I usually get the Chicken Pho (Pho Ga) because it is cheaper and more comforting than the standard beef affair, but it was interesting that the Chicken Pho here was more expensive! To be honest, I don't think it fully warranted the higher price tag, but I am no expert. What we noticed right away was the broth was much more flavorful from other spots. It also had a tinge of sweetness, but the meat flavor really came forth boldly. Compared to some other spots, the broth was great. The portions are also larger than other pho spots nearby, providing even more value! I would definitely recommend, and we will be sure to return to try some of their other menu items, like the spring rolls and vermicelli! read more

I've lived in Mira Mesa for 25+ years and have tried pretty much all of the pho spots in town. This place was recently remodeled and revamped and I can say they did a great job. First, there is no wait and the restaurant has plenty of seating. The pho here is top tier. They serve it in metal bowls so the soup stays hot. The broth is clear, clean, but flavorful. The tendon is extra soft and meats are of good quality. Rice dishes are great with big portions and lots meat options. Service is quick and everyone is friendly here. I heard that this place was better since the remodel. I found this was not the case. I tried it twice, will not be returning. I had the house special pho the first time. The broth is different, not in a good way. The second time I was told only pho was available 40 minutes before close. I tried the chicken pho. They use the same broth as the beef pho. Strange. No ginger sauce with the chicken, instead I got raw bok choy and broccoli on the side. Strange. Both times I was rushed to finish and leave. I was struggling to find a pho place close to home without having to trek to Convoy. I would say this is a very decent bowl of pho! My husband and I both enjoyed the broth. The brisket was a bit dry, but that may have just been a fluke. I also tried the broken rice. The special comes with pork chop, egg meat loaf, shrimp, fried shrimp cake, and shredded pork. Gave this place a second chance to order to go and not coming back. We ordered to go and they told us to be there 5minutes and we did. I asked for uncooked noodles. When my husband brought it home. Noodles was cooked and no bean sprouts and herbs and hot sauce. Meat was so thick and chewy and soup was horrible!!! So disappointed!!! Finally checked out Pho Lucky today. As others have mentioned, the restaurant was recently renovated. I ordered their bun rieu (crab omelette noodle soup). I must say, they are very generous with their proteins compared to most restaurants who will charge more and give less. Their soup comes with 3 tender pork spare ribs, 3 crab/shrimp balls or omelettes (bind with egg but shaped like meatballs) and you can taste the crab, 3 ham meat loaf slices, and 4-5 fried tofu. I think I'll have to split the bowl next time because I couldn't finish it. They don't skimp! The broth was too salty though so hopefully they'll adjust it.
